Health authorities have launched a global investigation into an outbreak of an unknown variant of the hepatitis virus that has been detected in children in a number of countries, including one in Germany.
There are more than 200 known cases, with 111 of them in the UK. But as more health authorities are alerted to the situation, cases are being detected around the world from Israel to Japan and Canada.
Many children have been hospitalized, 17 have required liver transplants and at least one child has died.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) issued a report into the situation on Thursday and told DW that details, such as the country of origin of the child who died, as well as whether they had been immunocompromised or undergone a liver transplant, remained confidential. · The FDA approved the drug Remdesivir based on trials in which 3 out of 53 children died. The trial was conducted by Gilead, the developer of the drug Remdesivir, and there was no control group in it. The mortality rate of children who have not received treatment against Covid-19 is 0.005% (1 in 20,000 dies). According to this study, the mortality rate of children treated with Remdesivir is 5.66% (1 out of 17.7 deaths). Dr. Meryl Nass: “More than 70% had adverse reactions, 21% had serious side effects, and three children died. Since there was no control group, it is unclear how Gilead or the FDA determined that the drug benefited children, because there is nothing to compare it with.” Remdesivir is a new antiviral drug in the class of nucleotide analogues. On May 1, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a simplified “permit for emergency use” of Remdesivir for the treatment of Covid-19 in the United States.
