Salim Mansur & Robert Vaughan:
As many of you might well know that Robert Vaughan of Just Right Media and I [Salim] have engaged in conversations on a wide range of issues on Canadian and world politics over the past several years. Robert resided just outside of London and we often got together both on internet radio and video to reflect on why, for instance, the "officially" designated Conservatives have been primarily responsible for de-railing and subverting the "culture of freedom" in Canada.
A few months ago Robert and his wife moved from southwestern Ontario to New Brunswick closer to his native Newfoundland. This meant we could not get together in person, as we did. I regretted this distancing, but Robert assured me that we would engage despite the distance in our conversations on camera and radio. Robert kept up his side of the bargain and once he got his satellite connections going we did a youtube video following the January 6 event in Washington that the mainstream media spun as incitement for insurrection by President Trump urging his supporters to assault the Capitol building. It was a lie, but for Democrats the lie was good enough to impeach Trump for the second time even though he was about to depart from the White House at the end of his term. All of this is now history. The video we did and Robert posted on youtube got de-platformed. So the Democrat-driven leftwing movement of "cancel culture" hit us directly.
It took sometime for us, Robert and I, to get together again following our video on the stolen election erased from youtube, though it is available on bitchute. What brought us together was an exchange on email about Conservatism and Canadian politics. In an email I wrote Robert with some of my thinking on the subject, I stated the following:
"Conservatism, as I have argued, based on the writings of Burke and his American defender, Russell Kirk, is not an ideology but an attitude towards life and politics, a state of mind or thinking, a manner of living, a commitment to an ideal that is rooted in history, a respect for tradition and faith and community on the basis of accepting that there is sacredness in life and living which transcends an individual in his time and place and, therefore, continuity of institutions through which public life is mediated is important and from this it follows that while change is a given as part of nature and is natural conservatives do not make of change a fetish to be sought or desired for the sake of change.
"Russell Kirk's book, The Conservative Mind: From Burke to Santayana (1st printing 1953), is an American classic. Kirk wrote of his book, "This study is a prolonged essay in definition." And then the paradox, the definition if any is then 448 pages of discussion about those who are conservative described "as statesman, as critic, as metaphysician, as man of letters." In other words, Kirk circles back to his opening observation that "Conservatism is not a fixed and immutable body of dogma," and hence if anyone might be described, or defined, as Conservative his Conservatism is a state of mind and thinking and living in opposition to the forces of radicalism in politics that is fixated with the ideology of futurism/utopianism/collectivism and seeks satisfaction in uprooting and transplanting institutions and ideas that evolved in the making of a society in a given time and place.
"Burke then is the ideal Conservative, as Kirk discusses, given his thinking and his politics in action in the context of responding to the ideas and their consequences in the French revolution. Burke was an Irish man born in Dublin in 1729 and in the context of 18th century England, as Irish, Burke was not a Tory (Conservative) but a Whig (Liberal) member of the parliament. So you can see now, how Burke's Liberalism transplanted to North America becomes Conservatism (not Toryism, which is English and to the extent represents English Conservatism it is based on class and landed aristocracy, and Burke by his ethnicity did not belong to that English landed class nor was his politics a defence of the interests of that class). Furthermore, Burke supported the American colonists and their grievance against George III and then lent support to the American revolution in 1776 while he would turn hostile to the French revolution of 1789. There is much food for thought here, and of how Burke's Liberalism became American Conservatism. Indeed, the American Revolution was a "conservative" revolution in contrast to the "radicalism" of the French revolution, and the Jefferson's Declaration of Independence was in principle a "conservative" document defending those principles that had become part of the English political tradition and institutions as a result of the Magna Carta and subsequently the English civil wars of early 17th century in which Charles I was executed in 1649 by the order of the parliament known as the Long Parliament led by Cromwell. The restoration of the monarchy in 1688 did not weaken the gains of the parliament over the crown, and the principle of holding the crown accountable for misrule was played out nearly a hundred years later in the American colonies and independence was seen as the only remedy against George III by the colonists of those 13 colonies, separate and apart from the colonies in upper/lower Canada and the Maritimes, which succeeded in establishing the United States of America.
"Burke on principle, and true to his own Liberalism, supported the American colonies in opposition to his monarch George III and those loyalists in England and by extension up here in what became Canada.
"So we must keep in mind that Conservatism in the U.S., and also in Canada, is Classical Liberalism (the culture of freedom based on individual rights that originates in the Age of Enlightenment in opposition to "Conservatism" tied to the traditions and values of the Church as the dominant institution in politics of that age). The philosophy and politics of Enlightenment was more or less led by Protestants, not Catholics, since the issue of the separation of religion and politics favoured the Protestants in the era of religious warfare in Europe, and the founders of the American republic were by and large Protestants."
This exchange of emails got Robert to engage me in the production of the YouTube video just posted on the internet. The internet connection between the Maritimes and southwestern Ontario at times gets quirky, but if you can bear the occasional quirkiness of the images on screen of the two of us the audio works fine. There is so much more to be said on the subject, and we hope to explore the subject further in future conversations.
