I'm still waiting for mine to come in. I went to Forest City Surplus, and they had only one unit in stock for the past few months, with no promise of getting more "due to supply line problems". I talked to someone who sold them for years, and he helped me pick out a pair that were powered by ordinary alkaline batteries, so I wouldn't have to rely on a car battery, solar panels, or other conventional sources of electricity to recharge the walkie talkies. Your batteries should be stored in an old micro-wave oven to protect them from an EMP burst of energy or wrapped in aluminum foil.
💥 Note: ordinary walkie-talkies are useless for communicating with others across town...the range is measured by city blocks, whereas CB walkie talkies can be heard miles apart. And you no longer need a license to use CB in Canada, like you do with ham radio. Yes, you can get still get some satellite phones, but they cost a few thousand dollars each, and you cannot call someone. You have to wait for predesignated times to connect. You can try using your cellphone if the satellites and towers are still functional, and the lines are not jammed, and IF your battery can be charged. There is one new cell phone that only costs $250 and the battery should last you three days. Depending upon the nature of the disaster, you should be contacted in most cities after a few days (72 hours minimum wait) with instructions, but if you're not you'll be glad you have a CB walkie-talkie to call other prepper groups in your area. Find out now which churches or freedom groups to contact, and make sure they have a CB walkie-talkie so you're not driving all over and wasting gas. I lucked out and CTC Prescott had a Cobra CB. As a heads up, the unit only comes with a 12 VDC cigarette lighter power plug. It also requires 9 AA batteries alkaline or NiMH rechargeable (not included with the unit). The NIMH rechargeable should have a 1.2 VDC, 1,000 mAh rating. From what I am reading in the manual it does not look like you can charge NiMH batteries in the unit with the 12 VDC power plug. The optional 120 VAC wall charger will recharge batteries in the unit so you do not need an external battery charger. The 120 VAC charger can be ordered on line.
I also bought a Bluehive 75 W power inverter with a 2.1 A total output. That way I can charge batteries in the car.

Since I last emailed you I found a Cobra power adapter (it came with the CB radio) that enables me to use the 12 VAC car power plug to charge batteries in the CB (there are separate PWR and CHG plugs of different diameters on the CB). Just heading out to buy some rechargeable batteries. The other option is to purchase an external charger. Cobra are out of stock on the 120 VAC power adapter.
Patrick Bestall: The main thing is that if there is no car or wall plug, you can just replace the batteries with new ones, right? So buy lots of extra batteries.
