Cultivated and Cloned Meat Labelling in Canada

Health Canada has proposed changes to its novel food policy, which would impact how cloned meat from cattle and pigs is ‘regulated’ in the country. This update could remove cloned animals and their offspring from the "novel foods" list, potentially eliminating the requirement for pre-market safety reviews and mandatory labelling.

 

Documents from Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) indicate that this planned change could allow beef and pork from cloned animals to enter Canada's food system without public notification or specific labels. Health Canada has stated that cloned meat is indistinguishable from conventional meat and is considered safe for human consumption.
