SPIRITUAL:
AN EVANGELIST’S ENCOURAGEMENT
Grace and peace, everyone.
I’m Randy Scott and have been connected to The Cross Current (TCC) for well over a decade. I, with my wife MaryLou, have also been worshipping with Winona Gospel Church in Stoney Creek for the past few years after moving to Grimsby, Ontario.
Enter the EETN
Over the past year, I’ve been privileged to serve with a new ministry of TCC called the Equipping Evangelists Training Network, or the EETN. This niche ministry invites us, like-minded and experienced disciple-makers in evangelism, to connect, lean on, and leverage the strengths and testimonies of others in the group.
Our EETN core leaders team kicked off this new year by meeting to discuss how we can equip our wider membership base by example to train our own home churches more meaningfully in evangelism, and pioneer a new local missions event to gather, unite, encourage, and train average Christians to step out in faith and share Jesus and His message of hope (the Gospel) with the lost in our community. I’ll be looking forward to helping host TCC’s very first Gospel Unity Mission late this March in partnership with several faithful local churches.
Equipping Entire Churches
My hope for the EETN is that we create more opportunities to equip others within our own home churches. My prayer is that each one of us represents Christ humbly, effectively & accurately. By modelling someone who loves, follows, and abides in Christ, we can hopefully attract others to the realization that we’ve been saved for a reason. I believe that this reason is simply to preach the Gospel to the lost and to disciple those within the family of God.
None of us is born with the confidence and skill to share Jesus Christ, but the EETN is a community where the individual with a heart to equip others to share the Gospel can further develop that desire and ability. We all know that we have not been called to indifference and that we have not been saved to simply add Jesus to our lives, but that He saved us to use us in the lives of others, both the saved and the not-yet-saved (better than saying the lost).
How Can You Pray for Us?
Often, an evangelist feels isolated and overwhelmed as the call to ‘make disciples’ of all nations (Matt. 28:18-20) is daunting. We can vary and have the mindset that we need to do more, speak to more people, engage more of the body for assistance, etc., etc., BUT we really need to be reminded that this is God’s work. He will build His Church and the gates of hell will not prevail (Matt. 16:18). Please pray for strength for the work of ministry, that we never move ahead of the Holy Spirit, that we stay humble in this journey and that we get out of our own way.
I pray, and I hope you will too, that every Church in North America recognizes its evangelists, supports them and integrates them into their weekly church activities. May Canada and beyond hear the saving news of Our King!

London City Council Meeting Tuesday, February 10, 1 pm
Hello everyone!
First, this is not an email asking you to campaign for Susan Stevenson. Although I support Susan on many issues, the point is that in regard to the two motions discussed in the link above, I agree with Susan.
On January 26, many came out in full force to London City Hall, expressing our concerns over the motions discussed above. The motions discussed above went to committee, were passed and will be officially voted upon this Tuesday, February 10, at 1 pm. I am hoping we can come out once again with the same overwhelming strength.
Why?
Because even if these motions pass the vote at council (which they probably will), it is too little too late. After sitting in council for four years, knowing that winter will come again, they didn't take action until now? Please remember this fact when the election rolls around this year.
Furthermore, the fundamental problems with this council (not everyone on it) still remain: mismanagement of and the lack of disclosure regarding the use of public funds, ridiculous salary increases, excessive taxation, useless and ineffective projects, etc., etc., etc.
The point is that we need accountability and transparency, and most (not all) city councillors/mayors are not delivering.
We need to take back our community and restore power to the people.
We need to remind the politicians that they serve us, not themselves.
Attending meetings, phoning and emailing our officials are all ways to remind them that we are watching and holding them to account.

Trump Signs Stopgap Spending Bill to End Partial Government Shutdown
President Donald Trump signed a $1.2 trillion spending package late Tuesday night, officially ending the weeklong partial government shutdown and restoring funding for most federal agencies.
President Donald Trump signed a $1.2 trillion spending package late Tuesday night, officially ending the weeklong partial government shutdown and restoring funding for most federal agencies.
The bill, which passed the House earlier in the evening by a narrow 217–214 margin, provides temporary funding for key government departments through September but keeps the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) operating only until February 13. Lawmakers now face a 10-day window to reach a longer-term deal on immigration and border security before DHS funding lapses again.
The legislation cleared Congress after days of intense negotiations and sharp divisions within the Republican Party. Twenty-one House Republicans opposed the measure, arguing that it failed to deliver on core GOP priorities such as full-year DHS funding and election integrity provisions. Another 21 Democrats voted in favour, providing the votes needed for passage.
In signing the bill, Trump said it was necessary to prevent further harm to the economy and to keep critical federal services running. “We cannot have another long, pointless, and destructive shutdown that hurts our country,” the president said. “We will continue working in good faith to resolve outstanding issues.”
The spending package funds major departments — including Education, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Health and Human Services — while deferring the most contentious debates over immigration enforcement. Democrats have demanded new restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, including requirements for body-worn cameras, visible identification, and the use of judicial warrants for arrests rather than administrative ones.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed Monday that the Trump administration had already begun implementing a limited version of those reforms, announcing that ICE agents in Minneapolis will now be required to wear body cameras. Noem said the policy will expand nationwide as funding allows.
“Body cameras will show the dangerous circumstances our agents face daily,” Noem said. “But they will also expose them to more scrutiny as they confront violent criminals and hostile activists.”
Opposition to the bill came from conservative Republicans who wanted a stronger stance on border security and long-term DHS funding. The 21 GOP lawmakers who voted “no” included Andy Biggs (AZ), Lauren Boebert (CO), Thomas Massie (KY), Byron Donalds (FL), Anna Paulina Luna (FL), Chip Roy (TX), and Scott Perry (PA).
Massie said he voted against the measure because it excluded the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a Republican-backed bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections. “Blocked again — no SAVE Act, no border security, and a two-week DHS patch,” he wrote on X.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) defended the agreement as a necessary compromise to reopen the government while maintaining leverage over Senate Democrats. “Any attempt to hold up DHS funding over objections to immigration enforcement would be futile,” Johnson said. “ICE and CBP already received historic funding through last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act — $75 billion for ICE and $65 billion for CBP. They have enough resources to continue critical missions for years.”
However, the political battle over DHS funding remains unresolved. Democrats are pressing for oversight measures after two fatal ICE-involved shootings in Minneapolis last month, while Republicans accuse them of undermining law enforcement and weakening border security.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said Democrats will continue to demand “accountability and transparency” within DHS before agreeing to a longer-term funding package. Republicans counter that such restrictions could endanger agents and embolden criminal networks.
Despite internal divisions, Trump urged Republicans earlier this week to back the compromise measure and avoid prolonging the shutdown. His message to lawmakers — “There can be no changes at this time” — effectively cleared the way for the bill’s final passage.
“The American people deserve a functioning government,” Trump said in a statement following the signing. “We’ve restored order and stability, and now it’s time to get back to work securing the border and strengthening our nation.”
With the president’s signature, federal agencies, including the Departments of Education, Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development, will resume normal operations. The White House said it expects government employees to return to their posts on Wednesday morning.
