CANADIAN:

The University of Toronto has officially Re-designated a multi-faith Prayer Room as a Muslim-Only Mosque.

Before, Jews, Christians, Hindus — students of all faiths — were allowed to use this space to pray according to their own traditions.

But now, it’s officially a Muslim-only space on this largely publicly funded university campus.

As we learned, this change happened almost immediately after a non-Muslim student complained to the university about the space not being inclusive.

In an announcement earlier this semester, the Multi-Faith Centre justified the move by citing heavy use by Muslim students and promised future upgrades, such as prayer mats, storage, and ablution stations, where students can perform the ritual washing known as wudu.


So, rather than restoring the room as a genuinely neutral, multi-faith space open to everyone, U of T chose the easier path: give the muslims trying to take over the neutral space what they wanted.


We found out that the university received complaints from non-Muslim students affected and learned that, according to the complaints, non-Muslims — especially Jewish students — had found that the room no longer felt welcoming to them. Political anti-Israel flyers appeared on the wall, loud group prayers disrupted private observances, and non-Muslims were told to take off their shoes. Students who didn’t conform increasingly felt like outsiders in a shared space.


And instead of addressing that behaviour or reaffirming equal access, the university simply made the exclusion official.

The University of Toronto Media Relations offered no real explanation for why a previously shared, centrally located room was converted rather than kept multi-faith. Instead, it was the standard institutional deflection: there are other spaces, go use those.

Non-Muslim students at one of Canada's most prestigious universities deserve better than second-class treatment. They deserve to feel safe and welcome in a place of prayer.

Instead, the University of Toronto is sending a clear message about whose belonging actually counts on campus.

Alberta’s Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis says the RCMP has found no credible evidence that the province’s growing independence movement is being manipulated by foreign interference.


Ellis’ reassurances directly contradict alarming claims pushed by some academics and legacy media reports suggesting Russian and U.S. forces may be fueling separatist sentiment.

Freedom of expression is under attack in Canada.

Canadian authorities confirmed that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has found no evidence of foreign interference linked to the separatist movement in Alberta. This assessment follows rising concerns over external influences in the province's political realm.


Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree announced that a thorough review of separatist activities was conducted, revealing no indication of foreign governments or international entities supporting these movements.


In recent times, questions have emerged from political analysts and opposition figures regarding potential external interventions affecting political dynamics in Alberta. Increasing concerns about foreign interference have emerged nationwide in Canada, particularly after allegations concerning federal elections and political organizations.


According to Minister Anandasangaree, the RCMP rigorously evaluated all available intelligence pertaining to Alberta’s separatists. The findings reaffirmed that no foreign entities were involved in directing, funding, or coordinating the activities within this movement.


The visibility of the Alberta separatist movement has intensified lately, driven by heated discussions about federal policies, energy regulations, and provincial rights. Advocates have voiced strong opinions, suggesting Alberta pursue increased autonomy or independence from Canada due to prevailing dissatisfaction with federal government decisions.


Recently, several separatist organizations have launched public initiatives and discussions around referendums for Alberta's independence. One group revealed earlier this year that it had collected sufficient signatures to initiate a citizen-led referendum as per provincial guidelines.


However, despite heightened visibility of the movement, surveys indicate that a majority of Albertans favor remaining within Canada. Political experts highlight that separatist sentiment often surges during times of economic hardship or disputes around energy and environmental measures.


Minister Anandasangaree reiterated that while Canadians are entitled to express their political views, authorities remain vigilant against potential threats posed by foreign influence or unlawful actions. He assured that the government is committed to safeguarding democratic institutions and public trust.


Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has consistently expressed her lack of support for separation, though she has acknowledged the right of citizens to discuss provincial autonomy and political reforms. Her administration has also faced scrutiny from opposition groups regarding connections between certain UCP members and separatist factions.


Experts specializing in national security remarked that investigations into foreign influence are intricate, often requiring prolonged intelligence observation. Nonetheless, the RCMP's findings suggest that current separatist movements in Alberta are predominantly shaped by internal political issues rather than external factors.


As dialogues on provincial rights, energy policy, and federal relationships continue to be significant political subjects, the matter continues to attract widespread attention across Canada. Officials affirmed their commitment to ongoing monitoring while upholding democratic freedoms and ensuring public safety.


Currently, neither the RCMP nor the federal government has announced any further inquiries concerning foreign interference in Alberta's separatist activities.

New York City’s mayor will be hosting the Urban Rat Summit in September, with expected participation of experts from cities like Boston, New Orleans, and Seattle.

Efforts are underway to combat growing rat populations in two of Ontario’s largest cities, as the rodents that typically lurk underground become more visible thanks to a combination of construction and climate change.

In Toronto, the municipality’s infrastructure committee recently adopted a motion asking city council to direct staff to craft an “action plan” to reduce rats in the city.

The motion, put forward by Coun. Alejandra Bravo and Deputy Mayor Amber Morley, is a response to residents’ concerns about a rise in visible rats in local neighbourhoods, Bravo said.


“People were talking about this in 2022 as sort of a growing problem. And then last year, last year and a half … it’s been something that’s bubbling and growing,” said Bravo, noting that residents of her ward have found themselves “overrun” by the rodents.


“It’s a really critical quality-of-life problem when people have all of a sudden been confronted with rats coming into their home or into their business or their place of work … a bunch of factors (have) come together to create this kind of perfect rat storm.”

Why is Vancouver seeing a rise in the rat population?

A sharp increase in construction in the city, due to transit projects and housing development, has disrupted rat habitats deep underground, driving them into open spaces where people can see them, Bravo said.


Longer stretches of warmer weather due to climate change have also enabled the rodent population to flourish by extending their mating periods, she said.

“Cold winters helped us because that interrupted the breeding of rats,” Bravo said. “But with winters not being cold enough, that means that every two months (the rats) can breed.”


The motion put forward by Bravo and Morley – which will go to city council for a vote later this month – also seeks to have council ask the city manager to consult other communities in North America on their approach to rat reduction.


In Ottawa, the city is exploring a form of rat birth control that is not yet legal in Canada.

Local council recently supported a motion brought by Coun. Laine Johnson that asks Health Canada to expedite the review of a product called ContraPest, which is already being deployed in Seattle.


ContraPest works by inducing early menopause in female rats while reducing sperm production in males.

Johnson called it a better solution than rat poison because rats have the ability to “learn” which food sources are bad for them and adjust their behaviour.

A trial of the oral contraceptive was conducted in Washington D.C. in 2019, but the Department of Health said “the results proved inconclusive” and stopped using the product.


Meanwhile, the province of Alberta says it has been a rat-free zone for about 70 years, adhering to a zero-tolerance policy that even prohibits residents from keeping the rodents as pets.


The province says it does not allow rat populations to establish themselves and while small infestations might occasionally occur, those rats are isolated and eradicated when found. Public vigilance, prevention of rat infestations by efforts like rat-proofing structures and removing food sources, are key, the province says.


Karen Wickerson, the province’s rat and pest specialist, doubts whether the humane birth control strategy suggested by Ottawa would be enough to fight the problem plaguing North American cities by itself.

“They have to continuously eat (the birth control) for (population reduction) to continue, so I think there’s a lot kind of missing from that strategy,” she said.


Wickerson has been at the helm of the province’s rat control program for four years, and says that a multi-pronged approach is necessary, but ultimately the province prescribes to a strategy of elimination based on vigilant citizen reportage.


The project that began in the 1950s has been so successful that many Albertans don’t even know what a rat looks like anymore, Wickerson said, sometimes sending pictures of tree squirrels to the official government reporting email.

“If you’ve never lived outside of Alberta, you may never have seen a rat before and so they’re often misidentified,” she said, adding that muskrats make up about 50 per cent of the 400-500 yearly reports of alleged rat sightings.


Along with public education and participation, Alberta has established a veritable rat exclusion zone. The Rocky Mountains to the west and co-ordination with neighbouring Saskatchewan to the east have fortified the rat-free borders, something that might be difficult to establish in Ontario’s urban centres.

Ontario isn’t alone in its struggle.

The inaugural conference aims to bring together experts in pest control, academic researchers, and politicians in order to share best practices for rat population control in North American cities.


Bravo, the Toronto councillor, said knowledge sharing and co-ordination across regions is key to the fight.


“We’re part of a huge, continuous megalopolis here, and collaboration is always important,” she said. “If there’s good things being done in Peel or in Ottawa or in Chicago, we want to know about that.”

Trump says Hakeem Jeffries should face Charges for 'inciting violence' after 'Maximum Warfare' Rhetoric preceded Assassination Scare

President Donald Trump accused House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of inciting the most recent assassination attempt against him and called for the New York Democrat to be arrested, escalating a bitter clash over whether Jeffries' combative language helped set the stage for an armed attack at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in April.


Trump made the accusation Thursday in a Truth Social post that reached his 12.6 million followers. He paired the text with images of Jeffries standing beside a sign displaying the words "maximum warfare," the faces of Trump and aide James Blair, and, three days after Jeffries' remark, surveillance footage that Fox News Digital reported showed suspect Cole Allen rushing a Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton with a weapon in hand.


The post asked a pointed question: "Should Hakeem Jeffries be charged with inciting violence?"


The timeline that set off the dispute

The confrontation centers on a sequence of events that Republicans say is too close to be coincidental. Jeffries used the phrase "maximum warfare everywhere, all the time" during the redistricting fight. Days later, an armed suspect allegedly attempted to breach security at the dinner where Trump and senior administration officials were present. The Justice Department released surveillance video appearing to show Cole Allen storming the checkpoint.


Trump's post drew a direct line between the rhetoric and the attack. He wrote that Jeffries should be "charged with INCITING VIOLENCE!", language that leaves no ambiguity about the president's position, even if no formal legal proceeding has been announced.


White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, as Breitbart reported, argued that sustained hostile rhetoric against Trump by political opponents and media figures has helped fuel violence against him. That framing places Jeffries' "maximum warfare" language in a broader pattern the administration has been building for months.

This is not the first time Trump has publicly demanded consequences for Jeffries. The president previously called for Jeffries to face consequences after the Democrat branded the Supreme Court "illegitimate."


Jeffries refuses to back down

Jeffries did not apologize. He did not soften his language. Instead, he fired back.

A spokesperson for Jeffries referred Fox News Digital to a post on X in which the minority leader dismissed Trump's accusation and pivoted to kitchen-table economics. Jeffries wrote:


"Gas prices are sky high, grocery bills are surging and families can't catch a break. Democrats are about to take back the House and you're losing your mind."

He called Trump's post "another deranged rant", a characterization that itself carries the kind of charged language now at the center of the debate.


At a news conference in late April, Jeffries defended his use of "maximum warfare" and refused to walk it back amid GOP backlash. He told reporters bluntly:

"I don't give a d*** about your criticism."


He then offered his own origin story for the phrase, claiming the White House started it. Jeffries said an anonymous White House staffer first deployed the language during an interview with The New York Times last year, and that he was merely adopting the other side's framing.


"That phrase 'maximum warfare everywhere, all the time' came from the White House in the summer of 2025, when they started this redistricting battle, and now they're big mad. Why? Because Democrats have decided to finish it. Get lost."


That defense, "they said it first", may satisfy Jeffries' base. But it does not resolve the central question: whether a senior elected official's adoption and amplification of warlike rhetoric carries different weight than an anonymous staffer's quote in a newspaper.


The contradictions in Jeffries' position

What makes Jeffries' stance difficult to square is his own record of calling for measured speech. On "Fox News Sunday" last month, Jeffries told viewers that lawmakers should "set the most appropriate example" in their rhetoric. He added:


"Whatever your ideological perspective is, we all love America, and we all want to make sure that this country is the best that it can possibly be."


That sentiment sits uneasily alongside "maximum warfare everywhere, all the time." One is a call for civic decency. The other borrows the vocabulary of armed conflict and applies it to a political dispute over congressional maps. Jeffries wants credit for both.


The broader pattern of incendiary conduct from Democratic officials and allies is not limited to Jeffries. A Pennsylvania Democrat Senate hopeful was arrested for alleged death threats against President Trump, a reminder that the space between heated rhetoric and criminal action is not always as wide as politicians assume.


Republicans argue that when the leader of the House Democratic caucus tells his party to wage "maximum warfare everywhere, all the time," and days later a man with a weapon charges a Secret Service checkpoint at an event where the president is present, the sequence demands more than a shrug and a pivot to gas prices.


What remains unanswered

Several important questions hang over this story. No formal charges have been announced against Jeffries, and Trump's post, while forceful, functions as a political demand rather than a legal filing. The specific charges filed against suspect Cole Allen, if any have been publicly detailed, remain unclear from available reporting.


It is also unknown whether the Department of Justice, which released the surveillance footage of the checkpoint breach, is investigating any connection between Jeffries' rhetoric and Allen's alleged actions. Trump's call for charges is a political statement. Whether it becomes a legal reality depends on decisions that have not yet been made public.


The institutional questions run deeper, too. Congressional Democrats have spent years arguing that Trump's rhetoric contributed to the January 6 Capitol breach. They built an entire select committee around that premise. Now the same framework is being turned back on one of their own leaders, and the response is not introspection but defiance.

That asymmetry matters. If rhetoric from political leaders can be treated as a contributing cause of political violence when it comes from the right, the same standard should apply when it comes from the left.


Jeffries cannot simultaneously argue that words have consequences when Republicans speak and that words are just politics when Democrats deploy the language of war.


The accountability gap extends across the Democratic caucus. Members like Rep. Jayapal, who admitted to talking with foreign diplomats about circumventing U.S. sanctions, and congressional Democrats who launched a clemency probe targeting Trump pardon recipients, have shown a willingness to push boundaries while demanding strict standards from the other side.


The real stakes

Trump's demand may or may not lead to prosecution. But the political stakes are already real. Jeffries is positioning himself as the face of Democratic resistance heading into a cycle where his party believes it can retake the House. His refusal to moderate his language, "Get lost," he told critics, signals that confrontation, not conciliation, is the strategy.


That choice carries risks. Voters in swing districts may not share Jeffries' appetite for "maximum warfare." And the uncomfortable proximity between his rhetoric and an actual armed attack on a presidential event gives Republicans a concrete, visual argument that Democratic leaders are playing with fire.


The surveillance footage released by the Justice Department, showing a man rushing a security checkpoint with a weapon, is not an abstraction. It is not a metaphor. It is a record of what happened days after the top Democrat in the House told his party the time for maximum warfare had arrived.


Jeffries wants to wage rhetorical war and then claim no responsibility when someone takes the metaphor literally. That is not leadership. It is the kind of recklessness that institutions are supposed to check, not excuse.


If words matter when the other side says them, they matter when your side says them too. That principle should not require an act of Congress to enforce.

Rep. Jayapal admits talking with foreign diplomats about getting oil to Cuba despite U.S. sanctions

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the Washington state Democrat who leads the Congressional Progressive Caucus, told an audience Monday that she has been in conversations with ambassadors from Mexico and other Latin American countries about how to get oil to Cuba, directly challenging the Trump administration's sanctions and tariff regime designed to choke off the communist island's fuel supply.


The remarks, delivered in a speech after Jayapal visited Cuba, drew immediate condemnation from the White House and Republican lawmakers who accused her of actively working to undermine American foreign policy on behalf of a hostile regime.


As Just the News reported, Jayapal described Cuba's situation as a humanitarian crisis "beyond imagination" and said only one Russian tanker had managed to deliver fuel past the U.S. de facto embargo since Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured and removed. That single tanker, she said, provided just 10 to 14 days of fuel.


What Jayapal said, and what it means

The congresswoman did not mince words about her diplomatic freelancing. In her own telling, she laid out conversations with foreign officials aimed squarely at circumventing the consequences of executive action taken by the sitting president.

Fox News reported Jayapal's remarks in detail. She said:


"I was in conversations with the ambassadors from Mexico and some other places... trying to figure out how to get oil there."


That admission is the core of the controversy. A sitting member of Congress openly acknowledged working with foreign governments to find ways around American sanctions, sanctions imposed by executive order and backed by the full weight of federal law.


The policy Jayapal sought to navigate is not ambiguous. In January, President Trump signed an executive order placing heavy tariffs on any country that provides Cuba with oil. He later imposed additional sanctions on foreign banks and firms doing business with Cuba. The combined effect was to cut off the island's primary energy lifeline, which for years had run through Venezuela.


With Maduro removed and Venezuela's oil shipments to Cuba ended, the island nation sits on the brink of economic collapse, a fact Jayapal cited as justification for her outreach. But the question is not whether Cuba is struggling. The question is whether a member of Congress should be coordinating with foreign diplomats to help a sanctioned regime evade the policy of her own government.


White House and GOP response

The White House wasted no time. Spokesperson Olivia Wales issued a blistering statement to Fox News Digital:

"The Democrats continue to show Americans who they really are, the America Last party who sip margaritas with terrorists, advocate for illegal alien criminals, and undermine the United States to aid a failed, communist regime."


That language is sharp, but the underlying accusation, that a Democratic lawmaker worked against U.S. interests on behalf of a communist government, rests on Jayapal's own words. She was not caught on a hot mic. She made the statement publicly, apparently viewing it as a point of pride.


Sen. Rick Scott of Florida went further. As Breitbart reported, Scott called the admission disturbing and directed his criticism at House Democratic leadership as well:

"DISTURBING: @RepJeffries and @HouseDemocrats, members of your party are OPENLY admitting to aiding a communist adversary in coordination with foreign countries to VIOLATE American sanctions."


Scott's framing places the burden not just on Jayapal but on Democratic leaders who have so far declined to distance themselves from her remarks. Whether House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries addresses the matter remains an open question.


Legal exposure, or just political theater?

Jayapal's comments immediately raised questions about the Logan Act, the rarely enforced 1799 statute that prohibits unauthorized citizens from negotiating with foreign governments in disputes involving the United States. But legal experts cautioned against jumping to conclusions.


Former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy told Fox News that Logan Act claims are unlikely to succeed on their own. Criminal exposure, McCarthy said, would depend on whether Jayapal actually took concrete action that violated or helped violate sanctions, not merely whether she had conversations.


That distinction matters. Talking to ambassadors is not, by itself, illegal. But publicly stating that the purpose of those conversations was to find ways around U.S. sanctions puts Jayapal in an uncomfortable position. If any tangible steps followed, introductions, coordination, facilitation of transactions, the legal picture could change.


Jayapal herself seemed to acknowledge the weight of the sanctions regime. She described it in stark terms, saying she had "called these sanctions an economic bombing of the infrastructure of Cuba." That language frames American policy as the aggressor and the Cuban regime as the victim, a framing that sits comfortably within the progressive left but that most Americans, and certainly most Cuban Americans, would reject.


The broader pattern

This episode does not exist in isolation. House Democrats have spent the past year engaged in an escalating series of confrontations with the Trump administration and, at times, with the basic norms of congressional conduct. From recent resignations under threat of expulsion to aggressive oversight maneuvers, the caucus has shown a willingness to push boundaries.



Jayapal's Cuba outreach fits that pattern. It is not a quiet policy disagreement expressed through legislation or floor speeches. It is a sitting lawmaker telling the world she is working with foreign governments to blunt the effect of her own country's foreign policy.


Democrats have also been laying groundwork for sweeping investigations into Trump allies if they retake the House in the midterms. The juxtaposition is hard to miss: the same party that wants to investigate the administration's conduct abroad appears unbothered when one of its own members coordinates with foreign diplomats to undercut that administration's sanctions.


The Cuba fuel crisis is real. The island's infrastructure is crumbling, and ordinary Cubans are suffering. Nobody disputes that. But the suffering of the Cuban people is a product of decades of communist misrule, not of American tariffs imposed months ago. The Castro regime and its successors have had more than sixty years to build a functional economy. They chose repression and central planning instead.


Jayapal's framing inverts the moral equation. By casting U.S. sanctions as "economic bombing," she places blame on Washington rather than Havana. That is a policy choice, and voters can evaluate it. But when the policy choice crosses into active coordination with foreign governments to evade American law, it becomes something more than a disagreement.


The recent wave of high-stakes disciplinary battles in the House shows that Congress is not incapable of holding its own members accountable when the political will exists. Whether Republican leadership pursues any formal inquiry into Jayapal's conduct will signal how seriously the majority takes this kind of boundary-crossing.


What remains unanswered

Several critical questions remain. What specific ambassadors did Jayapal speak with? Were the conversations limited to general policy discussion, or did they involve concrete proposals for moving oil to Cuba? Did any other members of Congress participate? And did Jayapal or her office take any follow-up steps, letters, introductions, meetings, that moved beyond talk?


The answers matter. If Jayapal's outreach remained at the level of diplomatic small talk, the episode is politically damaging but legally inert. If it went further, the implications are far more serious.


Meanwhile, House Democrats have shown no shortage of willingness to take dramatic, even futile, actions when they believe the political moment calls for it. Jayapal's Cuba gambit fits that mold, a gesture aimed at her progressive base, wrapped in humanitarian language, with little apparent concern for the legal or diplomatic consequences.


The American sanctions regime on Cuba exists for a reason. It is the policy of the elected president, enacted through lawful executive authority. A member of Congress is free to oppose that policy, to introduce legislation to change it, to make speeches against it on the House floor. What she should not do is appoint herself a shadow diplomat and start working the phones with foreign governments to find workarounds.


If the roles were reversed, if a Republican lawmaker had publicly admitted coordinating with foreign ambassadors to undermine a Democratic president's sanctions, the calls for investigation would already be deafening.

Jayapal said the quiet part out loud. Now the question is whether anyone in Washington plans to do anything about it.

In one of the most striking developments, Three Mile Island, the site of the most famous US nuclear accident, is coming back online to power chatbots and other AI applications — now rechristened as the Crane Clean Energy Center.


Microsoft, meanwhile, sees its ambitious renewable-energy targets as a hurdle to its planned data-center buildout, so is weighing whether to delay or abandon them altogether, sources say.


The amount of power consumed by US data centers alone is likely to more than double to 106 gigawatts through 2035, according to BloombergNEF, where a gigawatt can feed around 750,000 homes.


This massive demand is already worrying governments desperate not to fall behind in the AI race, but just as anxious to keep voters onside.

301,620 Albertans just made History

301,620.

That's the number of Albertans who just signed a petition to trigger a referendum on leaving Canada.

I was at the Elections Alberta building in Edmonton on May 4th to watch history happen — box after box after box of signatures rolling onto the loading dock, every single one labelled with a photo of the volunteer canvasser who collected those names.


The official count now sits at 301,620, with another 1,500 still in transit thanks to Canada Post delays. This was no small feat. Nearly 7,000 volunteers stood through freezing temperatures, blizzards, and the bitter Alberta winter for four solid months to collect them.


That is the kind of dedication you simply cannot manufacture — and it is what real grassroots democracy looks like.

And here is what burns me up.

While history was being made on that loading dock, the mainstream media couldn't have cared less. They only wanted to talk about the Centurion Project scandal — anything to distract from the fact that 301,620 of their fellow citizens just told Ottawa that enough is enough.


So, I went into the crowd myself to ask the people who made this happen what today meant to them. Their answers will move you.

This is only step one. The signatures are sealed pending a court case brought by a handful of Indigenous chiefs trying to block this democratic process before a single name is even counted. But the message has been delivered loud and clear to Premier Smith, and the ball is now in her court.

There, people would set up their own wallet (bank account) on the new Star Link Satellite System.

 

Present bank account balances have already been mirrored onto the new wallet accounts. If the person had foreign currency to exchange, or bonds to redeem, they could do it at the time of appointment. Wallets will already contain tariff dividends, monies reimbursed for improper loans and interest paid on mortgages, credit cards, etc, plus monies earned from use of birth certificates on the Stock Market.
