CANADIAN:

Ontario changing Social Assistance Rules based on Immigration Status

People without legal immigration status in Canada now won't be able receive benefits

Ontario is enacting new rules for social assistance payments so people without legal immigration status in Canada cannot receive the benefits.

Premier Doug Ford first vowed to make the change following media reports about a tribunal ruling that awarded Ontario Works payments to a man who came to Canada decades ago on a temporary work permit that has since expired.


Ford wrote in a social media post last month his government would always support people who have fallen on hard times, but "that doesn't include people living in Canada illegally."

The minister of children, community and social services said in a news release Thursday that the province has amended regulations on Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program.


Michael Parsa says it will ensure taxpayer dollars are focused on people facing financial hardship who are legally allowed to live in Canada.

The changes specify that people who are in Canada illegally and people only authorized to stay on a temporary basis, such as through student visas and work permits, are not eligible for social assistance.

Canada Hits Decade-High Deportations Amid Immigration Crackdown

Data shows that Canada Border Service agents are setting new records for deportations across Canada, as a visible increase in raids and document checks are now occurring. Images of a CBSA raid at an international student protest in Calgary, Alberta, on Wednesday indicate that Canada is beginning to take a more serious and more visible approach to removals.

As of June 30, CBSA records show that over 10k deportations have already occurred in Canada, happening at a rate of 400 per week. Last year, Canada deported over 23,000 people.


Being in Canada on a temporary visa means exactly that: temporary. No one was promised permanent residency, and protesting, demanding extensions, or framing the country as stolen land does not create one. The political sympathy these students once enjoyed has evaporated.


Document checks at these gatherings are not persecution or “Trump-style thuggery” — they are simply how a country determines who still has legal status and who does not. Hunger strike or not, the rules still apply.


Many of these students were clearly misled by shady consultants and marginal colleges. That does not change the fact that they signed temporary visas knowing the terms, and that the real goal for most was never education but a pathway to stay and eventually sponsor extended family. Living here without status only leaves them vulnerable to exploitation. For both their own sake and Canada’s, the clearer path is to go home when the visa ends.

Bob Bedard reflected on early in his teaching career.Being asked by the Archbishop of Ottawa to help found St. Pius X Boys’ High School was not something Fr. Bob ever imagined he would do. In fact, he never wanted to set foot in a high school again after a very negative experience as a transitional deacon.


However, there he was, off to become a teacher! His vocation as a teacher and principal in a Catholic high school would prepare him for an even greater mission, founding one of the most solid seminaries the Canadian Catholic Church has ever seen. Now, 40 years later, the Companions of the Cross continue to lead the way in forming priests who are deeply rooted in faith and relevant to the lives of people in today’s world.

 

I met Fr. Bob on the steps of St. Mary’s Parish in Ottawa when I was 19 years old. I shared that I was studying science at the University of Alberta and planning to become a dentist, and he exuberantly said he had thought he was going to be a dentist too! Little did I know that after that encounter, Fr. Bob would send me a personal letter inviting me to consider the priesthood and the Companions of the Cross, along with his first book, We Are All Called to Be Companions of the Cross.Within a few months, I had renounced my academic golf scholarship and other scholarships to the University of Alberta, renounced the ways of the world and the pursuit of success, and decided to give my whole life for the Gospel and Eternal Life—to seek the Lord and, hopefully, become a Catholic priest and serve Him all the days of my life.


It was a very exciting time. My seminary formation gave me the gift of human and spiritual formation to evangelize the world. The charism of the Companions of the Cross is evangelization, especially to the youth, the poor, and alienated Catholics. We were trained to meet people where they are and introduce them to Jesus. Our preaching at Mass was to be dynamic, relevant, insightful, and inspiring.​One of the best ways I can describe Fr. Bob is that he was like a Catholic Billy Graham. When he spoke, he had everyone’s attention. Fr. Bob Bedard was a chosen soul, called to bring authentic Catholic renewal to Catholic schools, the priesthood, the lay faithful, and the entire universal Catholic Church. I welcome you all to be inspired on Saturday, Nov 1, at St. Mary’s Parish in Cochrane, AB. We will begin at 7 pm, and the movie about Fr. Bob’s life runs for 75 minutes. After the film, there will be a short interview with Ryan Schmidt, Brian O’Neill, and Nicolas Simoni. We hope and pray that this event will spark deeper renewal and inspiration within all our Catholic schools, parishes, and throughout our entire diocese.

Opposite views of Ukraine vs Russia

It's surreal.  Compare  media.  The National Post describes what Russia is doing to the people in Ukraine as heartbreaking.  Russia Today describes what Ukraine is doing to innocent people in Russia as war crimes.

 

 

If you read the different viewpoints in the above, I think you'll come to the same conclusion as I have.  Zelensky is targeting undefended Russian civilians with drones.  Putin is targeting military targets.  The grief experienced in Ukraine's Kramatorske is incidental or accidental, not deliberate.  The following report explains it best:

Last week I returned to Calgary from the United Kingdom fresh off an interview with the U.K. Free Speech Union where I discussed my new book on the future of cancel culture and free speech. One of the first local news stories I encountered upon my return featured Edmonton Police Service (EPS) facing criticism from Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and her government for the EPS’s recent campaign urging Edmontonians to report hate crimes as well as “hate incidents” to the police. Among the “hateful” things the EPS was asking Edmontonians to report were “offensive jokes,” a category since removed from the EPS’s statement.
