· Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will remove retaliatory tariffs on US goods covered under the Canada-US-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (CUSMA) starting September 1st. Ottawa will keep tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos in place. Carney argued that this move preserves Canada’s advantage of having most trade with the US remain tariff-free, even amid ongoing trade disputes. Carney said the decision followed a call with President Donald Trump, who signalled willingness to deepen talks on remaining trade challenges.
Supporters, including the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, welcomed the change as relief for small businesses, while critics accused Carney of giving up leverage without securing US concessions. Ontario Premier Doug Ford pressed Ottawa to secure protections for key industries like steel and forestry or respond with stronger measures. The tariff rollback also comes as Canada prepares for next year’s CUSMA review and seeks to diversify trade while advancing major infrastructure and economic projects at home.
· An independent commission has recommended salary increases of $28,000 to $36,000 for federal judges, arguing higher pay is needed to attract top private-sector lawyers to the bench. The proposal would raise most judges’ base salaries to about $424,700, with chief justices earning up to $465,700, and Supreme Court justices receiving salaries as high as $546,000. The panel stressed that current pay lags far behind the private sector, where senior lawyers often earn more than $700,000 annually, creating a barrier to recruitment. The federal government, however, opposes the hikes, calling them insensitive given Canada’s economic challenges and noting judges already receive generous pensions. Ottawa insists there is no shortage of qualified applicants, pointing to increasing diversity in the judiciary.
Legal experts warn that rejecting the commission’s recommendations could undermine judicial independence, as financial security is a constitutional safeguard for judges. The government has promised to review the report before issuing a full response in the coming months. Some observers suggest the process may eventually lead to court challenges if Ottawa dismisses the findings without strong justification.
· A recent Angus Reid poll shows strong support among Canadians for mandatory public service, with seven in 10 backing a requirement for citizens under 30 to dedicate a year to civic roles such as tutoring or environmental work. However, opinions are divided when it comes to mandatory military service, which drew nearly equal support and opposition. Advocates say volunteering helps young people gain practical skills, build connections, and develop a stronger sense of belonging, but participation rates have dropped sharply in recent years.
Critics caution that making public service compulsory would be challenging given affordability concerns and limited volunteer infrastructure. They argue that young people already face financial pressure and employment insecurity, which could make mandatory service unrealistic. Instead, some suggest Canada should focus on creating a national volunteer strategy that makes participation easier and more engaging.
· A new report warns that the number of RCMP officers on long-term sick leave has reached record levels, creating serious staffing and financial strains for the force. About 7% of regular members are off duty on extended leave, costing an estimated $58 million annually, with cases often lasting more than a year. The Management Advisory Board argues the current system of unlimited sick leave at full pay discourages timely returns and is unsustainable, recommending reforms such as reduced pay after a certain period.
The RCMP union strongly disputes this, saying the real issue is poor management of return-to-work and disability accommodation programs, not the leave policy itself. Union president Brian Sauvé stressed that officers often go months without follow-up from the employer and insisted that any changes must be negotiated at the bargaining table. Other police forces, like Edmonton’s, use models that reduce pay after extended absences, but critics say the RCMP’s unique position outside provincial compensation systems complicates comparisons.
The RCMP has acknowledged the concerns and says it is reviewing the recommendations as part of broader efforts to improve employee health and wellness support. Who could possibly have predicted that offering unlimited sick leave would lead to a record number of employees being on sick leave?
· Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre won the Battle River-Crowfoot byelection in Alberta, securing his return to the House of Commons this fall. During a campaign focused on door-knocking and local engagement, he built connections with constituents in one of Canada’s safest Conservative ridings. With his return, Poilievre will face Prime Minister Mark Carney in the upcoming fall sitting and advance priorities such as the Canadian Sovereignty Act, pipeline projects, and infrastructure initiatives.
The victory allows him to reorganize the party’s front bench and “shadow cabinet,” adjusting roles based on performance and party strategy. Key issues for the Conservatives include immigration, crime, and the cost of living, while Poilievre prepares for a leadership review scheduled for January 2026. No challengers have emerged and his caucus seems to remain supportive.
· Elizabeth May has announced that she will not lead the Green Party into the next federal election, though she will remain as party leader and the sole Green MP for now. In an email to members, she said her voice carries more weight in Parliament as leader, but she hopes to expand the caucus before stepping down. May has led the party through five federal elections since 2008, briefly stepping aside in 2019 when Annamie Paul was chosen as leader.
After Paul’s resignation following the 2021 campaign, May returned to co-lead with Jonathan Pedneault. Pedneault fronted the Greens’ 2025 campaign but failed to win a seat and resigned days later, leaving May once again at the helm. She stressed that the party’s federal council will oversee a leadership transition and is committed to avoiding the turmoil that plagued Paul’s tenure. May said succession planning is always difficult but emphasized that this change should strengthen the party.

A dramatic video circulating on social media has sparked alarm by claiming that US president Donald Trump has only six to eight months to live. The clip alleges he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and congestive heart failure (CHF).
The claim, however, is misleading. The speaker in the video is not a doctor, and official medical records confirm Trump has a minor circulatory condition but no evidence of kidney failure, heart failure or any other life-threatening illness.
Origins of the Viral Claim
The video first appeared on Reddit before spreading to other platforms. In its full version, the speaker introduces himself as a physical therapist rather than a doctor. Edited clips removed this detail, leading viewers to believe a qualified physician was predicting Trump's imminent death.
As the rumour gained traction, some users exaggerated the claims further. Posts on TikTok even suggested Trump had only 'four days to live.' Fact-checking organisations, including PolitiFact, dismissed these suggestions as baseless and emphasised that no credible medical evidence supports them. The episode illustrates how partial or decontextualised content can quickly fuel misleading narratives about high-profile figures.
What Trump's Records Show
Contrary to the viral claims, official health updates from the White House in July reported that Trump had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), The Washington Post said. CVI occurs when the veins in the legs struggle to return blood efficiently to the heart, often causing swelling. The NHS notes that the condition is common in older adults and is usually manageable rather than life-threatening.
Trump's physician, Dr Sean Barbabella, confirmed the diagnosis as benign and specifically ruled out heart failure, kidney disease, arterial problems and other systemic conditions. Following a medical assessment at Walter Reed in April 2025, Trump was described as being in 'excellent health' and 'fully fit for office', according to BBC News.
Why the Claims Spread
Speculation was fuelled by images of Trump with swollen ankles and bruised hands, Reuters reported. Some social media users assumed these were signs of serious cardiovascular or kidney disease. The White House later clarified that the swelling was caused by CVI, while the bruising was attributed to frequent handshakes combined with Trump's use of aspirin as a preventive measure.
Experts in misinformation say exaggerated commentary spreads quickly in the fast-moving environment of social platforms. Predictions ranging from 'six months' to 'four days' were designed to provoke emotional reactions but lacked any medical foundation. Fact-checking agencies and medical professionals have consistently described the video as misleading.
The Facts Established
The assertion that Donald Trump has only six to eight months to live due to CKD and CHF is false. It originated from a misrepresented clip of a physical therapist's commentary and carries no medical authority. JD Vance Stares Straight into the Cameras and Drops MAJOR News:
On Monday, Vance was in northeast Ohio to advocate for President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax and budget legislation, referred to as the “one big, beautiful bill.”
During a press conference, he was asked about the video showing a large group of Black individuals assaulting three white people. The footage sparked widespread outrage, drawing reactions from figures like Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno and Elon Musk.
“There was a group of people who attacked a couple folks on the street in Cincinnati. Senator Bernie Marino, some others have spoken out about it, have been critical of it,” a reporter noted.
Vance responded, “OK, OK, yes, yes. So what I saw, and I haven’t seen the full context, but what I saw is a mob of lawless thugs beating up on an innocent person, and it’s disgusting. And I hope every single one of those people who engage in violence is prosecuted to the full extent of the law. And they will be. They will be so long as law enforcement in the state of Ohio takes their job seriously.”
He continued, “I know Dave Yost cares a lot about these things. But yeah, I actually, you’re right, Bernie did send me a clip of this, and we talked a little bit about it. I don’t know the full context. I don’t know how the fight started. But the one part that I saw that was really gruesome is you had a grown man who sucker-punched a middle-aged woman. And where I come from, at least, when you have a grown man who sucker punches a middle-aged woman, that person ought to go to jail for a very long time.”
Vance added, “And frankly, he’s lucky there weren’t some better people around because they would have handled it themselves. But if they’re not going to handle it, the cops in Cincinnati, the law enforcement, you’ve got to prosecute people. We’ve had way too much lawlessness on the streets of great American cities. How many of you all have wanted to go to downtown Akron or downtown Canton or downtown Columbus for a meal, but you’re worried because the local authorities in these big cities have allowed lawlessness to run wild?”
“We have got to make great American cities safe again for families and children,” Vance emphasized. “If you want to take your wife or your children out for a meal, you shouldn’t be worried about street violence. And the only way to destroy that street violence is to take the thugs who engage in that violence and throw their a\*\*es in prison.”
Authorities have since charged five individuals in connection with the brutal attack, which took place early Saturday morning and was caught on video. Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge confirmed the charges but declined to name the suspects or specify the charges, stating that additional arrests are expected.
“We have five we have charged, and anticipate more,” Theetge said during a press briefing.
Videos circulating online show a man being stomped on while lying on the pavement, and a woman being struck unconscious as she tried to intervene. Blood was visible on her face following the assault.
Ohio Republican and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said he spoke with the woman, identified only as Holly.
According to him, Holly is a single mother who was attending a friend’s birthday party. She claimed that aside from “one police detective,” no local or state officials had contacted her.
“It’s unconscionable that there were no police present in that area of Cincinnati on a Friday night, or even an ambulance to take her to the hospital,” Ramaswamy said.
Cincinnati Fraternal Order of Police president Ken Kober told WLWT that the victims suffered “pretty serious injuries” and would be “recovering from this for a while.”

Cracker Barrel Doubles Down – Makes Nasty Move Against Trump And MAGA:
Cracker Barrel has found itself in the middle of yet another cultural tug-of-war after announcing a rebrand of its iconic logo.
The company insisted that its tradition remains intact, saying, “Uncle Herschel remains front and center in our restaurants and on our menu. He is the face of ‘The Herschel Way,’ the foundation of how our 70,000 plus employees provide the country hospitality for which we are known.” In other words, Cracker Barrel wants people to believe it hasn’t abandoned its roots, even while tweaking its longtime image.
But across the country, Americans—especially those proud of tradition and heritage—are not buying the corporate spin. The backlash online was immediate, with customers furious that yet another beloved brand appeared to be sacrificing tradition on the altar of corporate “modernization.” Social media erupted with people demanding the company restore its original look. Ironically, even liberal institutions chimed in, some mocking the change and others ridiculing the outrage.
The official press office for California Governor Gavin Newsom even weighed in, sarcastically imitating President Donald Trump with a post on X: “WHAT IS WRONG WITH CRACKER BARREL?? KEEP YOUR BEAUTIFUL LOGO!!! THE NEW ONE LOOKS LIKE CHEAP VELVEETA ‘CHEESE’ FROM WALMART, THE PLACE FOR ‘GROCERIES’ (AN OLD FASHIONED TERM)!!! ‘FIX IT’ ASAP! WOKE IS DEAD!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. — GCN.”
Cracker Barrel itself tried to calm the storm with a statement shared with Newsweek, proclaiming: “Cracker Barrel has been a destination for comfort and community for more than half a century, and this fifth evolution of the brand’s logo, which works across digital platforms as well as billboards and roadside signs, is a call-back to the original and rooted even more in the iconic barrel shape and word mark that started it all back in 1969.” For many customers, however, the claim rang hollow.
To them, it looked like another example of corporate executives caving to focus groups and marketing consultants instead of honoring tradition.
Thomas Murphy, a professor at Clark University, tried to explain the rebrand in corporate jargon, saying: “The desire to rebrand is typically driven by either a major change in consumer behaviors or a brand dramatically changing who they want to be going forward.
In the case of Cracker Barrel they appear to be staying consistent with the products and experience they provide to the market. Their reason for making changes is the evolution of a younger audience who may not relate as much to the original brand.” In other words, they’re chasing youth instead of standing firm with the loyal customers who built the company’s success in the first place.
The controversy even managed to unite strange bedfellows. The official X account for the Democrats bluntly admitted, “We think the Cracker Barrel rebrand sucks too.” That rare moment of bipartisan agreement underscores just how misguided the company’s decision appears to ordinary Americans.
But perhaps the most outrageous response came from Chris D. Jackson, a Democratic strategist tied to the Biden campaign. He attempted to spin the issue into a political jab, saying: “For everyone whining about Cracker Barrel—remember this: when Joe Biden left office, the old logo was still there. It was Trump’s weakness that let the change happen.
Never would’ve happened under 46.” The claim is as laughable as it is desperate—trying to blame Donald Trump for a restaurant’s marketing department is peak left-wing absurdity. Under Trump’s leadership, patriotism, tradition, and American values were celebrated, not cast aside. If anything, it is under Biden’s weak, aimless presidency that corporations have felt emboldened to go “woke” and alienate their own customer bases.
What this whole episode proves is simple: the American people are tired of corporations tinkering with heritage brands to appease consultants or to appear trendy to a handful of urban elites. Cracker Barrel grew into a household name by appealing to tradition, family, and the comfort of simpler times. The backlash over its rebrand is just the latest evidence that ordinary Americans—Trump’s base in particular—are pushing back against the constant chipping away of what makes this country great.
Whether it’s politics or pancakes, the message is the same: stop selling out tradition, respect the people who built your success, and remember that “Make America Great Again” is about honoring the past while securing the future.

A life-size hologram of a police officer, installed in a South Korean park to boost public safety, is doing a good job preventing crime, with reports of criminal activities down by more than a fifth since it went up.
Standing at about 1.7 metres (5ft 6in) tall and dressed in full uniform, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s 3D projection is based on a real-life officer, according to the E-daily newspaper.
As the hologram had to be on display in all seasons, the dress uniform was chosen as it was “suitable for the entire year”, an official from the police station told The Chosun Daily, adding that the hologram was popular with the sizeable foreign population in the area.
The digital officer appears nightly, glowing blue in the dark, between 7pm and 10pm at Jodong No 3 Park in central Seoul. It pops up every two minutes to deliver a pre-recorded audio message reminding passers-by that they are being watched by security cameras and that “in the event of violence or other emergencies, the police will respond in real time” before disappearing.
Developed by South Korean tech company Hologrammica, it has been operating since last October under the city’s “Safe Park” programme, which targets areas prone to public disorders such as drunkenness and violent behaviour that need more policing.
And even though the hologram cannot intervene or make arrests like its flesh and-blood counterparts, its mere presence has had a psychological impact, officials say.
“Although it is clear upon closer inspection that the person isn’t real, the mere perception of police presence has had a significant deterrent effect,” police said in a statement.
New South Korean Starbucks offers rare view of North Korea
Since its installation, crimes reported in the area during those hours had dropped by roughly 22 per cent, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on Tuesday. This figure was arrived at by comparing data from October 2023 to May 2024, before the hologram was introduced, with October 2024 to May 2025, following the installation.
Public reaction to the hologram has been mixed, with some joking that crime decreased because people were too scared to enter a park with a “ghost police officer”. A social media user called it “laughable but it’s still useful as they have attached CCTV to it”.
Police, however, have hailed its pilot as a success.
“The hologram guide serves as a smart policing tool that boosts the public’s sense of security while deterring unruly behaviour,” said Seoul Metropolitan Police chief Ahn Dong-hyun, as quoted by Korea JoongAng Daily. “We will continue expanding crime prevention measures using AI technology to create safer and more welcoming parks for our citizens.”
Ahn confirmed that authorities were planning to expand the use of similar holograms into other public spaces.
