Former President Donald Trump was apparently shot at a Pennsylvania rally Saturday, and some on the left took the occasion to spread conspiracy theories that the shooting was a hoax.
Trump was speaking at a lectern in front of his supporters in Butler, Pennsylvania, when shots rang out. He grabbed at his ear before being engulfed by members of the Secret Service. The former president then stood up and raised his fist to the crowd. Blood was clearly dripping from his ear.
'All orchestrated by Trump.'
While many offered thoughts and prayers for the president, others in social media posts claimed that the shooting was a hoax.
"The failed shooting of President Trump was clearly a hoax created by the right for sympathy and votes. Like the man is telling his security 'wait this is perfect' and raise his fist lol," read one tweet.

“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.”
The secret service, which reportedly ignored a warning about the shooter climbing a building (see below), has issued the following statement:
During Former President Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on the evening of July 13 at approximately 6:15 p.m., a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue.
U.S. Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased. U.S. Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and Former President Trump is safe. One spectator was killed, and two spectators were critically injured. This incident is currently under investigation. and the Secret Service has notified the FBI.
Update (1918ET): Trump was grazed by a bullet and two people are dead, including the shooter, according to the Butler Country District Attorney.

“A source familiar with Trump’s security detail tells @FDRLST that the former and future president’s detail has been asking for beefed up protection and resources for weeks, but has been rebuffed time and again by Biden’s DHS.
DHS, which oversees Secret Service protective detail “wasn’t responsive to those requests” for more resources, the source said.”
Trump was seen standing back up with blood on his face, and was led off stage by the Secret Service, who could be heard shouting “get down” during the incident.
“I saw blood on his ear,” one rallygoer, Ron Moose, told the NYT.
Nine shots were heard, including three before Trump grabbed his ear.
Some reported seeing the military chase someone on the left hand side of the bleachers. The Times is also reporting that secret service is kicking out the press and has declared the venue a crime scene.
Trump’s ear was visibly wounded.
According to Secret Service spoksman, Anthony Guglielmi, Trump “is safe” after “an incident occurred” at the Pennsylvania rally.
Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said that Trump is “fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility,” adding that Trump “thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act.”
“Everyone join me in praying for our President Trump and everyone at that rally. I hope everyone is ok,” GOP Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) posted on X.

The Secret Service had designated that rooftop as being under the jurisdiction of local law enforcement, a common practice in securing outdoor rallies, Guglielmi said.Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger said his office maintains an Emergency Services Unit team, which deployed four sniper teams and four “quick response teams” at the rally. But he said the Secret Service agents were in charge of security outside the venue.
“They had meetings in the week prior. The Secret Service ran the show. They were the ones who designated who did what,” Goldinger said. “In the command hierarchy, they were top, they were No. 1.”
Goldinger said the commander of the Emergency Services Unit told him it was not responsible for securing areas outside the venue. “To me, the whole thing is under the jurisdiction of the Secret Service. And they will delineate from there,” he said.

The suspect in the attempted assassination Saturday of former President Donald Trump had explosives in his car and residence, CNN reported, citing law enforcement sources. The suspect also used a gun his father purchased, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing individuals familiar with the investigation.
A Secret Service sniper killed 20-year-old suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks at Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, officials told CBS News, which added that multiple law enforcement sources said the gunman was armed with a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle and opened fire from a shed's roof outside the cordoned-off rally area.
'We do not currently have an identified motive,' Kevin Rojek, FBI Pittsburgh special agent in charge, said at a briefing late Saturday night, according to CBS News.
ABC News, citing multiple law enforcement sources, reported that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted an urgent trace and found that the suspect's father legally purchased the gun recovered at the scene.
Reuters said Crooks' father — 53-year-old Matthew Crooks — told CNN he was trying to figure out what happened and would wait until he spoke to law enforcement before speaking about his son.
Trump survived the shooting but was seen on video bleeding from his ear, after which Secret Service whisked him away from the rally stage. Officials said one audience member was killed and two were in critical condition. CBS News, citing police, said the victims were all men, but their names haven't been released.
The FBI said Crooks is from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, CBS News noted. Bethel Park is about a half-hour south of Pittsburgh and just over an hour south of Butler, where the rally took place. The Washington Post reported that authorities by early Sunday had "sealed off the area around the alleged shooter’s home. Local fire department vehicles blocked access for several blocks, allowing only residents and investigators to enter."
The Secret Service and FBI are speaking with the suspect's family, the FBI has secured his home, and federal law enforcement is searching it, CBS News said, citing a law enforcement official. CNN, citing multiple law enforcement sources, reported that the suspect had explosive material inside his car and residence.
Fox News, citing voting records, reported that Thomas Matthew Crooks was a registered Republican, adding that he only took part in the Nov. 8, 2022, state election due to his age. Reuters — citing a 2021 Federal Election Commission filing — added that Crooks at age 17 made a $15 donation to ActBlue, a "political action committee that raises money for left-leaning and Democratic politicians." The outlet added that the donation was for the Progressive Turnout Project, a national group that rallies Democrats to vote. Reuters reported that the groups didn't immediately respond to request for comment.

“Do you think there’s going to be a big shift, any sort of change?” Johnson inquired.
“I think there’s going to be a big shift,” one voter confidently responded.
“I’ve always been a Democrat, but the Democratic Party often makes promises they can’t deliver.”
The other pro-Trump voters agreed, predicting a “big shift” in November.
A woman in the group criticized the Democrats, stating they “use the issues of the African American community as a soapbox to stand on and make promises just to get us to come out and vote. And then once we vote and everyone’s in place, it’s like ‘what happened.’”
