When you woke up this morning, you faced an old enemy. That enemy was not an invading army or a terrorist. It was the enemy of self.

 

The greatest threat to our Christian maturity is thinking of ourselves far too often. But why do we choose this route when Jesus has better things in mind? The answer lies in the enemy’s whisperings, “Go ahead, indulge yourself. You deserve to be happy.” But honestly, have you noticed how unhappy you become when you focus on yourself?

 

The sad truth is that the road to happiness is never-ending. The hoped-for destination is always just around the corner. When our eyes are centered on ourselves and our happiness, we become the most important thing, which is the opposite of true Christianity. The Lord would rather have us set our sights on the joy of blessing others rather than on fleeting happiness. Like infatuation is to love, happiness is to joy—happiness is emotionally powerful but short-lived, while joy is meaningful and abiding.


Today, can you and I make an agreement to let the welfare and growth of others govern our actions and words? Let’s agree to put self-interests on the back burner and be free from the tyranny of self. Jesus Christ has promised to take care of our needs. May we see to it that we love and care for those that God puts in our path.

 This Week in Canada: 


1.    Statistics Canada reported that Canada's real GDP contracted 0.1% on an annualized basis in the first quarter of 2026, following a downwardly revised 1% annualized decline in the fourth quarter of 2025. Two consecutive quarters of contraction meet the conventional definition of a recession, though several government officials and economists have disputed the recession label. Business capital investment fell for a fifth consecutive quarter during the same period, though an advance estimate for April showed a 0.4% rebound, driven by the mining and oil and gas sectors. The Bank of Canada's benchmark rate remains at 2.25%, with its next rate decision scheduled for June 10th.

 

2.    Canada and Germany signed a liquefied natural gas export agreement that would ship one million metric tons annually from the proposed $10-billion Ksi Lisims LNG terminal on Nisga'a Nation territory north of Prince Rupert, BC - the first such deal between the two countries. Germany has been seeking alternative gas supplies since ending its reliance on Russian imports following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, with Middle East supply further disrupted by the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Prime Minister Mark Carney framed the deal as validation of his energy diversification strategy, while BC Premier David Eby said it moves the project closer to a final investment decision. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed skepticism that the facility would be built and argued natural gas should instead be routed east and shipped from the East Coast. Ottawa also approved Enbridge's $4-billion Sunrise natural gas pipeline expansion in the same period.

 

 

3.    The Supreme Court of Canada declined to hear a New Brunswick First Nations appeal seeking Aboriginal title over privately held industrial forest land. Some commentators claimed that this effectively confirms that Aboriginal title cannot be declared over fee-simple private property, but the Court's refusal to hear the case does not, by itself, do so. Rather, the ruling has direct implications for BC's Cowichan Tribes case, in which a BC Supreme Court judge found last August that Aboriginal title had been established over more than 5.7 square kilometres of land along the Fraser River in Richmond. BC Attorney General Niki Sharma said the SCC's refusal gives the province a clear path to appeal in the Cowichan case, calling the New Brunswick outcome consistent with BC's own legal arguments. The Supreme Court's declining to hear an appeal is not a ruling on the merits, and the core question of Aboriginal title and private land ownership will likely remain unresolved until the Cowichan appeal is heard.

 

4.    Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed about 200 New York financiers and business leaders at the Yale Club, arguing that Canada and the United States need a fundamentally new bilateral partnership built around a stronger, more independent Canada. He described Canada as an energy superpower - citing oil, natural gas, electricity, aluminum, potash, nickel, copper, and industrial components - and called for deeper co-operation in sectors facing pressure from US tariffs and global competition. Nodding to the "Fortress North America" concept, Carney said Canada must focus on building up at home. Controversially, he also said that "Canada strong will help make America great again", repeating the Trump MAGA slogan that many in his own party have previously called racist.

 

 

5.    Prime Minister Mark Carney also announced at CANSEC - Canada's largest defense and security trade conference - that Canada is negotiating to purchase the Global Eye advanced aerial surveillance system from Swedish manufacturer Saab, passing over the American option of Boeing's E-7A Wedgetail. The Global Eye integrates Saab's radar technology into Bombardier's Global 6500 aircraft, and the deal would see at least one-third of a projected fleet manufactured in Canada over the next 15 years - potentially 40 aircraft built in Bombardier's Montreal and Toronto plants. The Department of National Defence is interested in purchasing six systems at a cost of more than $5 billion, and the government says the deal could support more than 3,000 jobs in the Canadian aerospace and defense sector. Defense Minister David McGuinty described the decision as a deliberate move to diversify Canada's military relationships toward "like-minded, mid-sized countries" rather than continuing to rely on US suppliers. The announcement came as the US suspended the Permanent Joint Board on Defense - a bilateral advisory body established in 1940 - and as Canada separately reviews its F-35 procurement from Lockheed Martin.

Cooper has been a federal judge in Washington, D.C. since 2014, appointed by Barack Obama. On Friday, he made national headlines by blocking President Trump from renaming and renovating the Kennedy Center, ruling that Trump has no authority to do so.

Think about that: a federal judge has decided that President Trump—the chairman of the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees, which oversees the institution—is not allowed to make those decisions.

Judge Christopher R. “Casey” Cooper was appointed to the District Court in March 2014 following his unanimous confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Judge Cooper received a B.A., summa cum laude, from Yale University in 1988. Judge Cooper went on to graduate with distinction from Stanford Law School in 1993, serving as President of the Stanford Law Review and as a board member of the law school’s pro bono legal clinic.


Following law school, Judge Cooper clerked for then Chief Judge Judge Abner J. Mikva on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and from 1994 to 1996 served in the U.S. Department of Justice as a Special Assistant to the Deputy Attorney General. Judge Cooper then entered private practice, where for 17 years at Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin (1996-2000), Baker Botts (2001-2012), and Covington & Burling LLP (2012-2014) he represented both individuals and corporations in a wide range of litigation matters.


Working in Washington and London, Judge Cooper specialized in defending clients in white-collar criminal matters and conducting internal corporate investigations of alleged fraud and corruption.

Judge Cooper lives in Washington with his wife and two sons.

They both must be managed.  And both can look twisted, so you can't judge by appearances, only by the fruit the follows their growth.

 

Consider the Great Awakening in 19th century America, with all it's "fainting, jerking, and barking" in their camp meetings and churches.

In defense of these unusual manifestations I heard John Wimber who started the Vineyard Ministries and Catholic Charismatic bishops agree that when people over-react to the presence of God's Holy Spirit they should be removed or carried out to a separate room, and thus contain their peculiar reactions before it can spread like wildfire throughout the whole congregation as a form of hysteria.  (You really have to listen to the above podcast to understand this.)  In the early church this was the job of the ushers.

 

Now compare the above to the Olive tree, the biblical symbol of God's people.

 

See how twisted it is?  Very strange.  But if it's pruned, if you remove the unproductive branches and branches that rub together or grow inward, then it can be the most beneficial and long lasting of all the trees on earth.

God has made us stewards of the land and of the church.  A good steward does not let growth get out of hand.  Neither does he destroy every weak and struggling member.  We need the wisdom of the Gardener to know the difference.

He graduated at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) in 1815, and in 1819 at the Princeton Theological seminary, where he became an instructor in 1820, and the first professor of Oriental and Biblical literature in 1822.


Meanwhile, in 1821, he had been ordained as a Presbyterian minister. From 1826 to 1828 he studied under de Sacy in Paris, under Gesenius and Tholuck in Halle, and under Hengstenberg, Neander and Humboldt in Berlin. In 1840 he was transferred to the chair of exegetical and didactic theology, to which subjects that of polemic theology was added in 1854, and this office he held until his death.


In 1825 he established the quarterly Biblical Repertory, the title of which became the Princeton Review in 1877. He secured for it the position of theological organ of the Old School division of the Presbyterian Church, and continued its principal editor and contributor until 1868, when the Rev. Lyman H. Atwater became his colleague. His more important essays were republished under the titles Essays and Reviews (1857), Princeton Theological Essays, and Discussions in Church Polity (1878).


He was moderator of the General Assembly (O.S.) in 1846, a member of the committee to revise the Book of Discipline of the Presbyterian church in 1858, and president of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions in 1868-1870. The 24th of April 1872, the fiftieth anniversary of his election to his professorship, was observed in Princeton as his jubilee by between 400 and 500 representatives of his 2700 pupils, and $50,000 was raised for the endowment of his chair. He died at Princeton on the 19th of June 1878.

Meteor "Bombs" over the USA?

Two loud sonic/booms explosions have struck Eastern United States over the last few days. The first was a mysterious sonic boom that rattled thousands across South Carolina and neighboring states on May 28th 2026 - cause still unknown - while the other sonic boom that struck near Boston Massachusetts today May 30th possibly can be attributed to the explosion of a meteor mid-air, but that's still uncertain.
