Democrats who built careers on #MeToo go quiet as Graham Platner scandal engulfs Maine Senate race

The same Democratic lawmakers who once demanded that men "just shut up and step up" over sexual misconduct allegations now have remarkably little to say about their own party's Senate candidate in Maine, and the silence tells you everything about what the left's principles are actually worth when a Senate majority hangs in the balance.

Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate trying to unseat longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins, faces allegations of physical abuse against former girlfriends, sexting other women while married, and, per a New York Times report, locking a former girlfriend in a bedroom. Platner has denied abusing any of his exes and called the allegations "politically motivated."

But the party's loudest voices on sexual misconduct? They've gone remarkably, conveniently mute. And behind the scenes, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is scrambling not to address the allegations, but to manage the political damage before Democrats lose their shot at winning the chamber this fall.


The sounds of silence

The New York Post pressed several prominent Democratic women for their reactions to the Platner allegations. The responses ranged from evasive to absurd.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described survivor of sexual assault who has never been shy about condemning misconduct when the accused sits on the other side of the aisle, offered this:

"I have to read up on this latest reporting. I don't want to speak until I've dug into what's out there."


Sen. Elizabeth Warren, asked whether party leaders should referee the situation, brushed the question aside. "Referee what? That's up to the people of Maine," Warren said, this just days after she joined a meeting of party elders who grilled Platner about whether any further revelations might surface. Warren evidently had enough interest to attend the closed-door session, but not enough to share a public view.


Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin kept it short: "I'm leaving Maine up to Mainers, I'm not weighing in." Baldwin has pursued answers about what she has described as "decades long" sexual assault within the U.S. Coast Guard. Apparently the principle stops at the party line.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire came closest to a statement of principle, then immediately retreated from it. "I think inappropriate sexual behavior is wrong, no matter who does it, but it's up to the voters to decide," Shaheen said.


The Kavanaugh contrast

Perhaps no response captures the double standard more sharply than Sen. Mazie Hirono's. During Justice Brett Kavanaugh's 2018 confirmation hearings, Hirono told the men of the country to "just shut up and step up" and "do the right thing for a change" over high school assault allegations that were never corroborated.


Faced with the Platner situation, Hirono offered a different tone entirely.

"It's mainly a voter thing that the people of Maine are going to have to decide how they think about these factors."

A voter thing. Not a moral thing. Not a shut-up-and-step-up thing. Just a voter thing, when the accused is a Democrat running in a race that could determine control of the Senate.


To his credit, Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia broke from the pack. The senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta said plainly what his colleagues would not.

"These allegations are deeply concerning. And I think the people of Maine deserve answers. And this kind of abuse is something to be taken very, very seriously."

Warnock's willingness to speak only makes the rest of the caucus's hedging more conspicuous.


Schumer's damage-control operation

While rank-and-file Democrats dodged questions, Schumer was already working the problem, not by holding Platner accountable, but by lining up a replacement. The minority leader recruited 78-year-old Maine Gov. Janet Mills to run for the seat. Mills has since suspended her campaign but remains on the ballot for Tuesday's primary, a fact that gives Democrats an escape hatch if they decide they need one.


A top Senate aide described the mood inside the caucus in blunt terms, telling the Post that some Democrats are furious and that the party may face spending millions to "resuscitate" Platner's candidacy. The aide said left-wing lawmakers who backed Platner are now "all quiet, because it's like, maybe we shot ourselves in the foot here."

The aide added that Platner "can't take a heat lamp, let alone a real spotlight," and that for Democratic strategists at the top, the reaction is "I told you so", with more trouble expected.


An unnamed Democratic senator offered a candid assessment of the party's bind. Platner, the senator said, has "got everything to gain by going forward and nothing to gain by getting out." The same senator laid out the options in stark language: "I don't know what they can do. Either they convince him if the s*** is serious beyond what we see, to get out. Or they go along."

That's the calculation. Not whether the allegations are credible. Not whether the women involved deserve to be heard. Whether Platner can still win.


A race too close to abandon

The political math explains the cowardice. A Friday GOP poll showed Platner and Collins tied in the Maine Senate race. For Democrats chasing a Senate majority this fall, that kind of number makes a candidate very hard to cut loose, no matter what the New York Times reports about his personal conduct.


Longtime political consultant Hank Sheinkopf faulted the lawmakers who are carrying water for Platner. After Ocasio-Cortez's office failed to provide further comment on the allegations, Sheinkopf called her "the greatest player of hopscotch in American politics."

Sheinkopf offered a broader diagnosis of the party's behavior:

"The political industrial complex controls the argument, conscience doesn't matter anymore."


On Schumer's recruitment of Mills, Sheinkopf said the minority leader "was onto something. He understands that Platner could cost them any shot of getting the majority back. [Platner] could be in national ads."


That fear, not principle, not solidarity with accusers, not the moral clarity Democrats once claimed as their brand, is what's driving the party's response. Schumer isn't worried about whether the allegations are true. He's worried about whether they'll end up in a thirty-second television spot.


Principles for thee, not for me

The #MeToo movement was supposed to be about believing women and holding powerful men accountable regardless of party, status, or political convenience. Democrats built entire campaigns and confirmation battles around that premise. They fundraised on it. They gaveled hearings over it. They told men across the country to sit down and listen.


Now a Democratic Senate candidate faces allegations of physical abuse reported by the New York Times, not an anonymous blog, not a partisan opposition dump, but the newspaper Democrats themselves treat as scripture, and the party's most vocal advocates for accountability suddenly need more time to read up on things.

Platner denies the allegations and calls them politically motivated. He is entitled to that defense. But the Democratic senators and representatives who once insisted that accusers must be heard and that silence is complicity owe an explanation for why those rules apply only when the accused has an "R" next to his name.


The voters of Maine will make their choice on Tuesday. The rest of the country can already see what the Democratic Party's principles are worth: exactly one Senate seat.

JD Vance reveals Charlie Kirk's assassination led him and Usha to welcome a fourth child

Vice President JD Vance says the September assassination of his closest friend in politics, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, changed his family in ways both devastating and deeply personal. In an excerpt from his new book published by the Wall Street Journal, Vance writes that the 31-year-old activist's murder at Utah Valley University prompted Second Lady Usha Vance to reverse years of resistance to having another baby.


The couple is now expecting their fourth child, a boy.

Vance's account, reported by The National Desk, threads together the private grief of two families and the quiet reckoning that followed. Kirk was shot and killed during a Turning Point USA event in September. Vance described Kirk as his "best friend" in politics, a man he leaned on heavily for counsel during the early days of the 2024 campaign as his family adjusted to rising public profiles.


A widow's regret, a mother's change of heart

The most striking passage in the excerpt centers not on Vance himself but on two women, Usha Vance and Erika Kirk, Charlie's widow. Vance writes:

"As my wife held Charlie Kirk's widow on the first day of her terrible sorrow, Erika told Usha between sobs that she regretted having only two kids with Charlie."

That moment, by Vance's telling, altered the trajectory of his family. For years, he had asked Usha to have another baby. For years, she had said no, especially after the demands of public life placed them in the national spotlight. The Vances have been open about not always seeing eye to eye, and this was apparently one of those long-running disagreements.


But something shifted. Vance put it plainly in the excerpt:

"For years, I had asked Usha to have another baby, and for years she had told me she was done, especially now that public service had elevated us into the national spotlight. But something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy."

He added: "One life was stolen from us, but another was given."


The moment Vance learned Kirk had been shot

Vance recounts first learning about the shooting through group chats, the same chats Kirk was part of. When Vance walked out of his office, he wrote, his staff looked like they had "seen a ghost." His chief of staff delivered the news directly: "Charlie was shot." Then: "It doesn't look good."

The vice president did not describe the scene at Utah Valley University in detail. But he reflected on what the killing stripped away, not just from Kirk's family, but from his own sense of what matters.


"I realized that in such moments, everything worldly we value fades to nothing."

Vance wrote that Erika Kirk's grief cut through every layer of political identity and public importance. Her husband had been politically influential. He had the president's ear. None of it mattered in the end.

"Erika didn't care that her husband was politically influential or had the president's ear. She cared about her babies and the fact that an assassin had stolen Charlie from them, so many memories and moments with their father robbed from them forever."


A father's guilt and a friend's counsel

The book excerpt also reveals a more vulnerable side of Vance, one wrestling with the cost his career has imposed on his children. Vance's earlier memoir traced his journey from Appalachian poverty through Yale Law School, where he met Usha. This new book turns the lens inward, toward fatherhood under pressure.

Vance writes that his 7-year-old son had a particularly difficult time with the family's transition into public life. The vice president's words carry real weight: "Sometimes I feel like I ruined his life without even asking him."

It was Kirk, Vance says, who offered him counsel on that guilt. The excerpt captures Kirk's advice directly:


"Don't try to convince your son it's not a sacrifice. It is. Just try to take some solace in the fact that it's a worthy sacrifice. I'll say a prayer for you."

That exchange now reads differently in hindsight. Kirk was 31 years old. He left behind a widow and two children of his own. The man who told Vance the sacrifice was worth it paid the ultimate price for his own public life.

Vance has spoken before about the chaos surrounding public violence and its impact on his family. But this excerpt goes further, connecting that violence to the most intimate decision a couple can make, whether to bring another life into the world.


What Vance sees in the loss

The vice president does not pretend to have answers. He does not moralize about Kirk's death or turn it into a policy argument. The excerpt is personal, not political, and it is more powerful for it.

Vance writes simply: "I don't know why God does things like this." Then: "But I am grateful to Him that there will soon be another source of joy in our lives."

The passage about Erika Kirk's regret, wishing she had had more children with Charlie, stands as the emotional center of the excerpt. It is the kind of thing a young widow says in the rawest hours of grief, and it clearly landed hard on Usha Vance. The Vance children have already been the subject of ugly public commentary, which makes the family's decision to expand all the more pointed.


The excerpt does not name the shooter or describe any arrest or charges. It does not provide an exact date for the Turning Point USA event beyond September. The title of Vance's new book is not given in the reporting. Those gaps remain.

What the excerpt does provide is a window into how one family processed sudden, violent loss, and chose life on the other side of it. Vance already carries the weight of the vice presidency, a role that comes with its own mortal risks. Kirk's death clearly sharpened his awareness of how quickly everything can be taken.


A choice that speaks for itself

There is no shortage of public figures who talk about family values. Fewer act on them when it's inconvenient, when the spotlight is brightest, when the arguments against another child are perfectly rational.

Vance and his wife looked at what an assassin took from the Kirk family, a husband, a father, decades of memories that will never be made, and decided to answer loss with life. That decision doesn't need a speech. It speaks plainly enough on its own.

Getting busy in Montenegro

Welcome back. When I launched this newsletter, I promised you zeitgeist, so here's the zeitgeist — I am filing this at ungodly hours, from a flat in Tivat, on the coast of Montenegro, on five hours' sleep, praying for no typos and my keyboard on fire. But oh boy how I love this job.

 

This week, we were deployed alongside my producer Paul and my cameraman Pierre to Porto Montenegro for the EU-Western Balkans summit. To kick off, we sat down with  António Costa on the eve of the gathering. The European Council chief told me there is real momentum for enlarging the European Union, which is a big statement to make in the Balkans, where accession has been associated for a good two decades with lost promises and missed deadlines.

 

But he has a point. 

Hungary's decision to lift its veto on Ukraine – and by extension Moldova – to formally open accession negotiations ahead of the Western Balkans summit has revitalised the process and lifted the mood in Brussels.

 

For the Council chief, the decision signals a new entente cordiale among Europeans, and the upcoming EU summit in June will be used to show just that. It is also a sweet victory for Costa after he proclaimed that no one – in a clear reference to Viktor Orbán – would blackmail the Council under his watch. After all, his crediblity depends on that.

 

Still, questions remain. Many of the details of the deal struck between Budapest and Kyiv over the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine – a sensitive issue for both sides – remain unclear. Péter Magyar has also indicated that he will maintain a hard line on his neighbour's accession, rejecting any fast-track and doubling down on a referendum on membership. Ukraine is now expected to open the first set of negotiations this month, but diplomats in Tivat also told me that the remaining five clusters (in plain English, more sets of reforms) could drag beyond July, which is what the Commission wants, and a period of three additional months seems more realistic. Still, Costa told me that, given the amount of work done in parallel, Ukraine should also be in a position to close them swiftly, which is really what matters. 

 

Going back to the Balkans, Montenegro is firmly on track to join in 2028. And it makes sense — the addition of a new member state that is pro-European, already in NATO, and relatively small, and so easy to manage, would signal enlargement is alive without too many complications for the 27. 

 

For the rest, Costa told me joining the EU is "merit-based and will always be merit-based" but also conceded that the process needs to be simplified. His tone in our interview echoed a proposal put forward by France and Germany calling for a "more structured gradual integration" for aspiring countries.

 

The idea is simple, think of it as building blocks — the more you reform, the more EU perks candidates can unlock, including more access to the single market, which is the money-maker. On the sidelines, Edi Rama of Albania told me enlargement needs a "political boom" beyond technicalities.

 

Interestingly, Rama alongside Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić penned an op-ed earlier this year that went under the radar, a mistake in my view, in which they suggested they could give up full membership rights for a quick seat at the table. When I asked if his op-ed may have served as inspiration for Macron and Merz, he told me his plan was better. Classic Rama. 

 

The Albanian prime minister was also busy dealing with the fallout of a planned luxury resort linked to the Kushner-Trump clan on the Adriatic. The project set on Sazan island – which seemingly triggered a spiritual moment for Ivanka Trump – has led Albanians to the streets in protest. Rama told me he hears the concerns, but pointed to a darker plot fuelled by antisemitism, "hostile" external forces and an army of bots. "We are under a hybrid attack," he told me. 

 

Protesters in Tirana insist what's really under attack is the natural habitat of Albania's coastline by the Kushner's fancy project. You can read our piece here.

 

Returning to Vučić, he did show up at the summit after much speculation that he would skip it after a week of tensions with Montenegro, celebrating the 20th anniversary of "the restoration of its independence" from Serbia, and prior Yugoslavia. Vučić suggested that his intelligence services had advised him against going to Tivat, citing a high-level security threat.

 

Montenegro's Prime Minister Milojko Spajić told me in a sit-down interview that he was proud of his police and intelligence services for keeping "all leaders" safe. The place, I can tell you, was high on security, with a helicopter hovering above the fancy hotel where the summit took place, much to the dismay of our sound guys. Oh, and guess who didn't show up? Meloni and Magyar. Staying on Serbia, the exasperation is growing. 

 

Chancellor Merz told reporters after the meeting that Vučić's three-way on the EU, China and Russia, is simply not possible. "Serbia must clearly define where this country sees its future," he said, and perhaps they will when the election due this year finally gets a date.

 

"Serbia knows what it has to do, if they do, we move forward. If not, we stay blocked," Costa told me, noting the country has not opened a single new cluster since 2021 over what the Commission calls serious backsliding in fundamental issues like judicial independence and media freedom.

 

The Commission is hopeful that the Vučić government will undo a judiciary overhaul approved at the start of the year, and sees it as a real test of goodwill if they do. Serbia, like it or not, given its size and geography, is instrumental to maintaining stability in a complex neighbourhood. As one diplomat told me, you simply cannot ignore them — it's too risky.

 

My takeaway? 

There is real momentum, forced by rough geopolitics, with Montenegro offering everyone a win. "It's the cookie of the Balkans," its prime minister told me — if you like one, you want more. But the next round of enlargement will not be like the previous; it cannot be — the rules of the game will have to change. 


No further proof than the final press conference in Tivat, where attention centred on planned talks in London between Germany, France and the UK on Sunday, with Zelenskyy set to join them. The Europeans have finally figured out they have to do the heavy lifting alone. The war has changed everything for the EU, and it will have a knock-on effect on how to enlarge the union.

Those full page Ontario Government ads Cost...

I'm looking at the full page color ad in today's paper that says, "A Safer Ontario Means Building New Jails".  That's all.  At the bottom in small print it adds, "Learn how we're protecting the province at ontario.ca/Safer Ontario".

 

It's not the first useless full page ad I've seen placed by the Ontario government.  They're in just about every edition.  And the average cost (maximum discount rate) is about $4,000 (half price).  How about skipping that ad and giving the money instead to the Byron Optimist Club so they can hold a Canada Day fireworks display again this year after losing their $5000 government grant.  

 

Multiply this by the number of other Ontario newspapers that run the ad.  The Toronto Star ad rates have to be ten times greater.  I'm sure there are a lot of school teachers, nurses, and public employees who would love to see all that annual "advertising" money redirected their way.  

 

This is why the founders of our country designed it to be governed "bottom up".  That was before our legislators introduced income taxes to waste on stuff like this.

Another Liberal Reversal


Just a week ago I sent three emails: 

1.     Liberals give in to complaints about online hate speech, 

2.     Liberals give in to criticism on "lawful access" bill, 

3.     Liberals give in to US pressure for trade talks.  

 

Today I see the Liberals also caved to Alberta on climate action.  See Robin Baranya Comment, "Canada backtracks on climate action".  Robin was complaining that we are producing too much carbon because "We're among the top ten emitters of greenhouse gases".  Yeah, like 1.4% of the global total, oooooh so dangerous.

Anyway, congratulations Carney for finding reverse gear in the Canada Demolition Derby.

From challenging NATO and the World Health Organization to questioning the Federal Reserve, Ballard sees these moves as essential steps in breaking free from institutional influence.


Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Ballard’s vision involves the future of our economy. He anticipates a seismic shift away from current fiat currency toward a commodity-backed financial system. By integrating blockchain technology—with a eye toward quantum financial systems and digital assets like XRP—Ballard envisions a transactional future that is more transparent, secure, and resistant to the inflationary pressures of the current system.


The presentation doesn’t end with doom-and-gloom; rather, it ends with an urgent call to action. Ballard posits that we stand at a crossroads: one path leads to total dictatorship, the other toward a renaissance of spiritual renewal, liberty, and prosperity.

He urges the younger generation to wake up, get informed, and engage in the restoration process.
