I went looking for what really happens to people who come into a large sum, because the story everyone repeats is that they lose it. The research says otherwise. Thousands of Swedish lottery winners were tracked for more than 10 years. They did not blow it. They spread it out, a slightly better year, every year. The people who did lose a windfall had one thing in common, and it was never the size of it. It was how fast the money went out.
So the report starts with one number: how much you can take each year, rising with prices, without the money running down. For money that has to outlast you, it is 3% to 4%. On $500,000 that is about $1,500 a month. On $10 million it is $350,000 a year. Spend above that and the money has an end date, whatever the statement says.
