Republicans, Democrats have a way for clergy to rejoin Social Security rolls

WASHINGTON — Because of religious principles, a young clergyman or woman wants to follow an age-old tradition of not relying on public insurance as they age. So they take the very common step of opting out of Social Security and Medicare.
Once they do that, they can’t reverse the decision. But as they grow older, they come to realize they may need the system’s benefits.
Congress is trying to help.
Legislation with strong bipartisan support would allow certain clergy to opt back in during 2029 and 2030.
Doing so is a way of “empowering them to take greater control of their financial future,” said Rep. Vince Fong, R-Bakersfield, one of the bill’s chief sponsors, along with Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena.
Fong said he found local pastors needing help.
“A lot of pastors decades ago often got inaccurate advice. They opted out of Social Security,” the congressman said. “Years later, as they’re planning retirement, they realized that they did not have financial security that they would have had if they were participating.”
In and out of Social Security
Congress has allowed opt-in periods three times in the last 48 years, most recently in 1999.
The form that clergy use to opt out of Social Security and Medicare requires them to certify that they are “conscientiously opposed to,” or because of religious principles are opposed to ... “any public insurance that makes payments in the event of death, disability, old age, or retirement; or that makes payments toward the cost of, or provides services for, medical care.”
Clergy who opt out do not pay Social Security and Medicare taxes. If they opt in, they would have to meet the usual 10-year contribution requirement to get full retired worker benefits.
The Internal Revenue Service and Social Security Administration would have to give Congress a plan showing how they would inform clergy about their eligibility.
Chris Wells, executive director of the Church Alliance, which advocates for employee benefits for clergy and their families, said specific numbers as to how many clergy would opt back into Social Security are “nearly impossible to find.”
A 2023 analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that, based on the 1999 experience with opting in, about 4,000 people would choose the retirement programs.
Bipartisan support
The Fong-Thompson bill was approved by the House Ways and Means Committee, often the scene of bitter partisan fights over tax policy, by a 40 to 0 vote. The House is expected to consider the bill when it returns in January.
Wells saw the support resulting from broader themes that didn’t involve politics.
Such legislation “asks us a question about what kind of world we want to build. Do we want to build a world where we have clergy in these roles, with retirement benefits so they can stay in these jobs?”
Allowing them to get Social Security and Medicare helps keep them in their jobs. While people can start receiving reduced Social Security benefits at 62, knowing that benefits would be available can give clergy comfort at any age, Wells said. Generally, people 65 and older can be eligible for Medicare.
“Any step we can take to help them in these jobs is not only going to benefit clergy, but all Americans who need the lights to stay on” at religious institutions across the country, Wells said.

In a more divided and uncertain world, the holiday season is an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and focus on what really matters.
This is a season of joy for families, and I hope you find time to rest, reconnect, and celebrate with the people that you love the most.
For Christians, Christmas holds a special meaning. It’s a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus, to rejoice in the light that he brings, and to recommit to following his example of service, forgiveness, and generosity.
For Canadians of all traditions, the holidays remind us that there can be hope after despair, that light follows darkness.
This is a time to remember those in need of comfort, those struggling to get by, and those grieving a loved one. A time to help with a call, a visit, or an act of kindness that reminds someone that they are not alone.
And although this year has brought more than its share of challenges to our country, we’ve also been reminded that we are fortunate to be part of one extraordinary, generous, and caring nation, that we’re strongest when we are united, when we look out for each other, when we take care of each other.

Maine taxpayers are footing a hefty bill for what looks like a Medicaid fraud scandal involving a Somali-led health contractor.
The House Oversight Committee has launched a deep dive into allegations of fraud tied to Gateway Community Financial Services, with Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services already suspending payments to the contractor after a whistleblower raised concerns, as NewsNation reports.
For hardworking Maine residents, especially retirees on fixed incomes, this isn’t just a bureaucratic hiccup—it’s a direct financial burden as millions of taxpayer dollars may have been siphoned off for services never rendered. The potential loss of over $537,000, still unrecovered by the state,e could mean less funding for critical health programs. From a conservative standpoint, every penny must be accounted for, and no one should escape scrutiny in this mess.
Uncovering the Gateway Fraud Allegations
Let’s rewind a bit: the Oversight Committee was initially sniffing out similar Medicaid fraud concerns among Somali contractors in Minnesota before turning its gaze to Maine. NewsNation deserves a tip of the hat for shining a light on Gateway’s questionable practices, prompting serious action.
A whistleblower named Chris Bernardini stepped forward, alleging massive fraud within Maine’s Medicaid system. “The state’s Medicaid program was charging residents for services that were never provided,” Bernardini told NewsNation. Land Acknowledgements provoke Anger and Division.
My friends know how terribly upset I have been with being asked by my pastor to repeat the government's Land Acknowledgement before Mass a few weeks ago (when I was well enough to attend Mass)...as per Bishop Fabbro's instruction to all priests in our diocese. https://dol.ca/land-acknowledgement
My emotion and objection were based on scriptures that clearly state no one owns or ever owned the land. Scriptures like Leviticus 25:23 "The land is not to be sold permanently, for the land is mine" (saith the Lord).
And did this change when the Church came along?
I've had time to pray about it and research how our saints throughout the centuries have interpreted such scriptures. Turns out the real problem is that the government's statement from the Truth & Reconciliation Commission doesn't go far enough! It redirects our attention away from the greedy men who really stole the wealth of the land and live like feudal kings, princes and lords over us today.
Alter. systems AI gave me five examples:
1. St. Ambrose of Milan (4th century)
Ambrose was one of the first bishops to articulate land and wealth as belonging to all humanity under God’s dominion.
“The earth was established for all, rich and poor in common. Nature yields her fruits to all; God orders that all be fed alike. You are only paying back your debt when you give to the poor.”

3. St. John Chrysostom (Archbishop of Constantinople, 4th–5th century)
The “golden-mouthed” preacher tied poverty directly to unjust ownership:
“Not to share our wealth with the poor is to steal from them and take away their livelihood.” (Homily on Lazarus and the Rich Man)
Chrysostom grounded his teaching in Genesis and Leviticus — the same idea that God entrusted the land to humanity collectively, so neglecting the poor is not charity denied, but justice violated.
He also spoke of the church as a “Jubilee community” where goods return to their true divine purpose.
4. St. Gregory the Great (Pope, 6th century)
Gregory codified this theology for medieval Christendom:
“When we give necessities to the poor, we do not bestow our goods but restore to them what is theirs.”
Notice the legal tone — “restore.” He’s treating the giving of alms not as a supererogatory virtue but as restitution.
