CANADIAN:

Canada to buy 190 Armoured vehicles from Ontario-based manufacturer in $2B deal

LONDON — Prime Minister Mark Carney says the federal government is spending "nearly $2 billion" over the next four years on made-in-Canada armoured vehicles.

The planned addition of 190 armoured combat support vehicles will bring the military's total fleet up to 550 vehicles, he said.


Carney announced the deal Thursday in London, Ont., at the Canadian campus of global defence contractor General Dynamics Land Systems.

The prime minister said every single vehicle will be built at the company's Ontario factory with parts sourced from providers across the country.


"All of those parts — each intricately crafted and built by Canadians from British Columbia to Nova Scotia — arrive here, on the London factory floor, where (General Dynamics) workers turn them into advanced armoured combat vehicles," Carney said.

The prime minister said this purchase is an example of his government's defence industrial strategy, which seeks to build out Canada's national security capabilities using domestic suppliers whenever possible.


Carney claimed the strategic partnership with General Dynamics will "create and sustain" 6,000 jobs over the next eight years.

Ottawa bought 360 armoured vehicles from General Dynamics in 2019, with delivery set to be completed by the end of 2025.


Canada's armoured fleet has been deployed in various missions abroad and Carney announced last week that 35 of the vehicles will be built to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

Ruby Rippey-Gibney set to break silence on Gavin Newsom affair in Vanity Fair account

Ruby Rippey-Gibney, the former San Francisco City Hall aide whose affair with then-Mayor Gavin Newsom nearly ended his political career in 2007, is preparing to tell her side of the scandal publicly for the first time. The forthcoming Vanity Fair piece arrives as Newsom is widely expected to pursue a 2028 presidential bid, and it threatens to revive a chapter of his past that California's political establishment spent years burying.


The New York Post first reported Rippey-Gibney's plans, noting that neither she, Vanity Fair, nor the governor's office responded to requests for comment. The details of what she will reveal remain unclear. But the mere fact that she is speaking, after nearly two decades of public silence, poses a problem Newsom cannot manage with a press conference and a vow to do better.

That was, after all, the playbook last time.


The 2007 scandal and its swift burial

The affair became public in early 2007 after Alex Tourk, Newsom's longtime political adviser and former campaign manager, discovered that the mayor had carried on a sexual relationship with Tourk's wife. Rippey-Gibney served as Newsom's appointments secretary at City Hall, a subordinate position by any standard definition. Tourk confronted Newsom and resigned.


Newsom moved quickly into damage control. At a public news conference, he acknowledged the affair and offered an apology that was notable for its directness, if not its depth.

"I want to make it clear that everything you've heard and read is true, and I am deeply sorry about that."

He framed the episode around alcohol. He announced he was giving up drinking and said he would seek professional help. News organizations widely reported that he had entered a rehabilitation program, a claim Newsom himself later disputed.


In a 2018 interview with The Sacramento Bee during his first gubernatorial campaign, Newsom pushed back on the rehab narrative:

"No, there's no rehab. I just stopped. There was no treatment, no nothing related to any of that stuff. I stopped because I thought it was a good thing to stop."


He said he sought counseling from Mimi Silbert, president of the Delancey Street Foundation, but characterized his decision to quit drinking as informal and self-directed. He later resumed drinking. The entire episode, a mayor sleeping with the wife of his closest adviser, a woman who worked under him at City Hall, was repackaged as a personal stumble, a lesson learned.


Newsom won reelection as mayor later that same year. He was elected lieutenant governor in 2010 and governor in 2018. The scandal barely left a mark on his trajectory. The question now is whether Rippey-Gibney's account will change that calculus as Newsom eyes a national stage.


A story shaped without her voice

For years, the public narrative of the affair was shaped almost entirely by Newsom and those around him. Rippey-Gibney stayed quiet. She did not give interviews. She did not write op-eds. She largely vanished from public life.


The one exception came during Newsom's 2018 gubernatorial campaign, when the #MeToo movement forced a brief reckoning with the power dynamics at the heart of the affair. Rippey-Gibney surfaced on Facebook to address the question directly.

"Yes, I was a subordinate, but I was also a free-thinking, 33-year-old adult married woman & mother."


She wrote that while she supported the #MeToo movement, she did not believe her relationship with Newsom belonged in that category. She described herself as a consenting adult, even as she acknowledged she was struggling with alcoholism and self-destructive behavior during that period of her life. It was the closest thing to a public statement she had ever made, and it was a Facebook post, not a magazine feature.

Newsom, for his part, offered the kind of carefully sanded contrition that has become his signature. He told The Sacramento Bee that the affair taught him a lesson he carried forward:


"Sometimes people make mistakes in their lives and you then work hard never to make them again, because you learn from them. I like to think I'm a better person, and I like to think that a lot of people have made mistakes, we just don't read about them."

That framing, the mistake was universal, the lesson was private, the growth was real, served Newsom well enough to win the governorship. But it depended on Rippey-Gibney's continued silence.


The #MeToo pass

The 2018 campaign exposed a fault line that Newsom's allies never fully addressed. As Fox News reported, prominent Democratic figures and #MeToo supporters largely gave Newsom a pass on the affair despite the clear power imbalance between a mayor and his appointments secretary. Senator Kamala Harris endorsed Newsom even as she spoke publicly against sexual harassment. Amanda Renteria, a fellow Democrat running for governor, was one of the few willing to call out the double standard, saying elected officials "need to be held to higher standard" and that voters should "make sure we elect people who do not abuse their power in any way."


Renteria's critique went nowhere. The California Democratic establishment closed ranks. Shawnda Westly, the state party's former executive director, offered a formulation that effectively handed Rippey-Gibney ownership of the story while relieving Newsom of accountability: "#MeToo is about ownership of our experiences because we all have stories that are ours alone to tell."

That logic, the story belongs to the woman, so we'll wait for her to tell it, conveniently ensured the story was never told at all. Until now.


Jennifer Siebel Newsom's remarks

One of the more revealing details from the original scandal involves Newsom's future wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. She began dating Newsom in late 2006, months before the affair became public. After the story broke, she told the San Francisco Chronicle something that would be difficult to imagine any political spouse saying in the current climate:


"I shouldn't say this, but there are two sides to every story. If people did research into the scandal... the woman is the culprit."

She reportedly apologized shortly after those comments were published. But the remark lingered, a future first lady of California publicly blaming a subordinate employee for a scandal caused by the man she was dating. It is the kind of statement that would generate weeks of outrage if uttered by a Republican's spouse. In this case, it was quietly folded into the background.


Jennifer Siebel Newsom now faces her own legal scrutiny. A federal probe into her nonprofit network has widened in recent months, adding another layer of pressure to the Newsom orbit at a moment when the governor can least afford it.


A pattern of accountability deferred

Newsom's political career has been marked by an unusual ability to absorb scandal without consequence. The affair with Rippey-Gibney is the earliest and most personal example, but the pattern extends well beyond it.


A former Newsom chief of staff pleaded guilty in a federal campaign fraud scheme, and a separate corruption probe led to the revelation that a Newsom appointee secretly wore an FBI wire during a federal investigation. The governor himself has characterized DOJ probes targeting him and his wife as politically motivated retaliation.


None of this has stopped Newsom from positioning himself for a national run. His recently released memoir reportedly details his romantic escapades as a single mayor, a curious choice for a man whose most damaging scandal involved a relationship with a married subordinate. The memoir suggests Newsom believes the affair chapter is closed, or at least manageable.

Rippey-Gibney's Vanity Fair piece may test that assumption.


What remains unknown

The details of the forthcoming article are still unclear. No publication date has been announced. The specific scope of Rippey-Gibney's account, whether it covers new facts, challenges Newsom's version of events, or simply offers her emotional perspective, remains unknown. Vanity Fair has not confirmed the piece publicly.


What is clear is the timing. Newsom is termed out of the governor's office next year and is widely expected to launch a presidential campaign. A first-person account from the woman at the center of his most personal scandal, published in a major national magazine, would land squarely in the window when Newsom needs to introduce himself to a national Democratic primary electorate.


For nearly two decades, Newsom controlled this story. He apologized on his terms, framed the narrative around his own growth, and benefited from a political culture that asked no hard follow-up questions. The woman whose career and marriage were caught in the wreckage stayed quiet.


That arrangement apparently suited everyone in Sacramento just fine. Whether it survives Rippey-Gibney's decision to finally speak is another matter entirely.

In politics, the stories you bury have a way of resurfacing, usually at the worst possible time, and usually told by someone who remembers the parts you left out.

In Seismic Shift, more than 100 House Democrats vote to end Israel Aid

Nearly half of House Democrats voted to cut off aid to Israel Wednesday, underscoring a seismic shift in political support for the longtime U.S. ally.


The amendment to a State Department spending bill would have eliminated $3.3 billion in funding, and thanks to strong Republican support for the Jewish state, it failed 314-104 . But the vote served as a moment of reckoning for House Democrats who have had to confront years of voter outrage about Israel’s handling of the war in Gaza.

“There's also a real sense that the status quo cannot continue,” the House’s No. 2 Democrat, Rep. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, said in an interview before voting for the amendment.


The vote came after months of contentious primary elections where progressive candidates toppled incumbent after incumbent by publicly eschewing spending from pro-Israel groups and promising to recast America’s relationship with the nation.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will be promoting a political operative with connections to Hillary Clinton as his new “chief operating officer.”

 

When it comes to the chief operating officer role, it should be noted that this is an unusual role for a prime minister’s office to have. It is said that Johnson’s role will be similar to that in the corporate sector, where there is a person in charge of day-to-day operations.

Johnson, according to records, helped Carney with his campaign to run for PM. She was fined $200 for not disclosing financial assets, as mandated for those working for or in public office. She paid the fine, but her disclosure statement is still listed as being in “progress.”

 

Carney’s government is fully on board with the LGBT and pro-abortion agendas, which are also something that Clinton and those connected to her promote as well.

Iran funeral crowd?

Press outlets around the world reported this week that millions attended the funeral, a figure that has never been independently verified. Echoing Iran’s state media, they presented the vast crowds as a nationwide outpouring of grief and loyalty. The more revealing question, though, is not how many filled the streets — it is how many did not, and why.

Tehran itself supplied the answer. As the mourning rituals got underway, the roads leading out of the capital clogged with traffic, not into it. Residents fled the disruptions and the atmosphere of the official ceremonies in droves, and few bothered to disguise their reasons.

“It is a holiday, and we are happy to leave Tehran and the funeral of a dictator behind and have fun for a while,” Sahar, a university lecturer who requested that only her first name be used, told The Algemeiner.

 

The mourners included large numbers of foreign students enrolled in Iran’s religious seminaries and universities — the beneficiaries of a long-standing regime practice of mobilizing international students for state-organized spectacles. Thousands of students from South Asia, Arab countries, and Africa study in Iran, particularly in the seminaries of the holy cities of Qom and Mashhad, and they have long been reliable fixtures at official rallies and commemorations.


The crowds were further swelled by Shiite pilgrims from abroad, drawn by Khamenei’s status as a Marja’e-Taqleed, a senior religious authority in Shiite Twelver Islam. And even then, the images may not have been what they seemed: Persian-language fact-checking accounts and independent online observers have suggested that some of the aerial photographs circulated by state-controlled media were generated or doctored using artificial intelligence.


Strip all that away — the bussed-in students, the foreign pilgrims, the possibly manufactured imagery — and the funeral looks less like a national wake and more like a carefully staged production with a shrinking domestic audience.

In June, the government of Canada’s Standing Committee on the Status of Women submitted a parliamentary report titled “Confronting Antifeminist Ideologies in Canada.”  

The report is proof of how petty and out of touch with reality — and with the real threat to women’s rights in this country, i.e. gender ideology — that the federal government truly is. I simply don’t know where to start. 

 

“The committee heard that antifeminist ideologies are diverse and vary in extremity.” They proceeded to haul in witnesses who expressed their distaste for “sexist jokes,” or the rise of another (mostly online) trend, the “trad wife” movement, “in which influencers advocate for women to embrace traditional gender roles, especially homemaking.” Call me a bigot (many have) but I am vastly more concerned about gender self-identification policies that provide biological males with a “free entry” pass into female spaces in Canada than I am with women who’ve decided to embrace being mothers and wives.


One is a direct threat to women’s safety, while the other is — and should remain — a personal choice that the government has no say in. Instead, this outlandish report ignores the real threat to women and sobs over those women who choose to raise children rather than study a STEM field at university. The report goes on at length about the importance of increasing the proportion of women in male-dominated fields such as engineering, and vice versa, as though we should convince legions of men to forsake their perfectly fine interest in science or math to instead sign up for nursing school. To what end? How will more male nurses equate to a reduction in violence against women? 


Of their 14 recommendations, the subtext of many is about granting the government greater powers to monitor and control Canadians’ speech, or to propagandize us all with “correct” views on feminism. Recommendations include “public awareness campaigns to counteract antifeminist rhetoric”; “enhancing support for Canadian media”; “regulat(ing) online platforms, including stronger moderation of harmful content”; and “provid(ing) youth with tools to navigate online spaces safely… including the capacity to recognize mis- and disinformation.” Unsurprisingly, the final recommendation is for more government funding: “That the Government of Canada make additional investments in research on antifeminist ideologies, its intersections with gender-based violence and coercive control, and its impacts, and that results from this research are made public.” 


“Confronting Antifeminist Ideologies in Canada” was, predominantly, an exercise in spitefully pooh-poohing the online narratives that left wing or Liberal MPs find distasteful, rather than looking at what actual harms women and girls in Canada face today — or what can be done to address them. What a waste of time and taxpayer dollars.
