Cenovus rips Canada's oil pipeline plan as 'unfinanceable'

The deal fails to address regulatory barriers to the industry’s capital spending, Cenovus CEO Jon McKenzie said Tuesday

The leader of one of Canada’s biggest oil companies blasted a government push for a massive carbon-capture project and carbon tax in exchange for an oilsands pipeline, calling it uneconomical.


In May, Canada’s government and Alberta agreed steps and a timeline for a potential new west coast oil pipeline. Prime Minister Mark Carney has said a huge carbon-capture project dubbed ‘Pathways’ is a central condition for that new oil infrastructure.

But the deal fails to address regulatory barriers to the industry’s capital spending, Cenovus Energy Inc. chief executive Jon McKenzie said Tuesday.

“Neither the Pathways project nor the west coast pipeline really make any sense” without that fundamental capital investment, he said at the Global Energy Show in Calgary.


The Alberta-Canada deal didn’t address how the industry was going to ship an extra million barrels of oil a day while also spending capital on the Pathways project, which he said would cost as much as $30 billion, he said. No agreement on the project has been reached.


In one of the oil industry’s strongest rebukes of the “grand bargain” Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have discussed — a pipeline tied to emissions-abatement policies — McKenzie told the audience that the current regulatory framework means the “pipeline is unfinanceable” by the private sector.


The Alberta-Canada deal is partly aimed at fixing the province’s malfunctioning carbon market, and the province agreed to annual increases in the headline price on carbon. Its credits and offsets were trading last week at around $32 per metric tonne of CO2, according to Albert Ho, head of carbon intelligence for Carbon Assessors. That’s well short of target prices, and even down from about $40 per metric tonne when the deal was announced.


McKenzie’s comments stood in stark contrast to an earlier speech from Canada’s Energy Minister Tim Hodgson, who touted the pact with Alberta as establishing “a carbon market that works” to give investors long-term certainty, and “a practical middle ground.”

Smith’s Alberta government is currently the proponent of the new oil pipeline to the Pacific coast. Her deal with Carney says the pipeline could be designated a project of “national interest” and construction could start as soon as September 2027.

Smith echoed Hodgson in a speech of her own. “There is increasing scrutiny and concern” about how energy is produced, she said, adding that Alberta would focus on “maintaining a stable, reliable supply of energy while continuing to reduce emissions and support innovation.”

Cenovus’s McKenzie argued that the certainty the Alberta-Canada deal provides is that it shows Canada is “increasingly out of step and uncompetitive.”

A robot in China unexpectedly kicked a child during a martial arts demonstration, causing fear and concern among spectators.


When you talk about robots being trained in combat and martial arts, people instantly think about the worst possible scenarios, such as a robot takeover of the world and a war of the machines.

While many believe that such scenarios are too extreme to come true, spectators who watched a clown-wigged robot kick a child in the chest have already been filled with fear in China, likely changing the way they perceive the two-legged mechanical device.

Footage of the robot attacking the child has gone viral on social media, highlighting how a reported demonstration exercise shockingly turned into an episode of hostility for the child who was hurt by the kick.


The incident also showcases the unpredictable side of robots. Nobody from the crowd that watched the robot would have imagined that it would attack a child who was shorter than it with such force.

The Child's Mother Complained the Staff Was Slow to React

This incident occurred at a Xinjiang tourist attraction, where spectators, including many children, surrounded a robot that was displaying its martial arts skills.

The robot wore a blue wig and maintained a distance from people. Several children were amused by its martial arts moves, but as it moved forward, it got closer to the boy it eventually targeted.

The robot then swiftly turned around and kicked the boy hard in the chest. The boy bent down in pain and sat on the floor, while other children who watched the stunt, not realizing the seriousness of the situation, laughed and cheered.


After the kick, the robot moved back, away from the boy who had been injured. Shanghai Daily, which shared the clip on X, confirmed that the child escaped serious injury, but the boy's mother complained that the staff members who managed the event were slow to respond to the incident.


This is evident in the video, as nobody came forward to help the injured boy, nor was the event paused for a moment to check and ensure the robot did not kick anybody else.

When one looks closely at the video, it appears that the boy who got injured stood closer to the robot than the others. He stood on the pink band on the mat, while the other spectators stood on the yellow band.


The robot was likely allowed to perform its martial arts display within the limits of the pink band. However, the boy standing there came in its way and got kicked. It is worth mentioning that it was the organizer's responsibility to clear the spectators from the robot's territory to prevent such an incident.


Of course, the child's parents also should have ensured he stood at a safe distance from the robot. The incident highlights how the robot was not 'conscious' of the boy's presence and therefore executed the kick, unlike a human who would know when and who to kick.


It is possible that the robot was tuned to a combat mode that disabled all the safety layers designed to prevent it from attacking people, akin to turning off the ESP and traction control on a car. However, that is an assumption yet to be confirmed.

Boot camp inflicts many painful trials for soldiers to prepare them for war.

But all the above was voluntary.

The agenda hasn't been posted yet, and frankly, it doesn't matter what's on it. We're not there for one item — we're there to show that citizens are watching. Every meeting. Every vote. Council needs to feel our presence in that room, not just hear about it after the fact. A full row of CCAL members in the gallery sends a message no deputation can match: we are paying attention, and we are not going away.


Meet outside City Hall at 1:00 PM. We'll gather, hand out stickers, and walk in together.

Welker, like all other “journalists” and reporters of her ilk, actually think the unprecedented number of plea deals is the result of legitimate prosecutions rather than a---e of authority—particularly threats to turn misdemeanor cases into felonies—to extract plea deals.

 

They don’t entertain for a SECOND that perhaps something is off with a 100 PERCENT CONVICTION RATE before DC juries. Or question how the Biden DOJ got away with for years bringing the felony 1512c2 charge against 300+ J6ers (and the president) before SCOTUS determined the statute had been unlawfully applied.


The single minded focus on those charged/convicted of “assault” on police—when the 18 USC 111 statute also applies to “interfering” or “impeding” federal officers—allows the media to ignore the hundreds of other low level misdemeanor cases that nonetheless resulted in torturous investigations and prosecutions, rigged trials, and time in federal prison.
