The CRA does not treat cryptocurrency as money. Instead, it classifies digital assets as a commodity, in the same category as gold or oil. This classification has been in place since the CRA first issued guidance on digital currencies in 2013 and remains consistent today.

What this means practically is that every time you do something with your crypto (sell it, trade it, or spend it) you may be triggering a taxable event. The CRA requires you to calculate any gain or loss using Canadian dollars (CAD) at the fair market value on the date of each transaction. This applies even if you never converted your holdings into cash.

What Is the Difference Between Capital Gains and Business Income?

This distinction is one of the most important concepts in Canadian crypto taxation, and it directly affects how much tax you pay.

If the CRA classifies your activity as capital gains, only 50% of your net profit is included in your taxable income. This typically applies to casual, long-term investors who buy and hold.


If the CRA classifies your activity as business income, 100% of your profit is taxable. This applies to frequent traders, commercial miners, and anyone whose pattern of activity looks like running a business, taking into account how often you trade, how much time you spend on it, and whether you are doing it with a profit motive.

As one Toronto-area tax partner noted in a Globe and Mail report on 2026 crypto tax filing, if you transact frequently it is important to have proper advice because the line between investor and trader is not always obvious. Getting this classification wrong can double your tax bill.


What Are the Taxable Events for Crypto in Canada?

What Counts as a Taxable Event?

Many GTA residents are surprised to learn just how many actions with cryptocurrency are considered taxable. According to CoinTracker’s Canada crypto tax guide, the following all trigger a tax obligation:

  • ·        Selling your crypto for Canadian dollars

  • ·        Trading one digital asset for another (even crypto-to-crypto swaps)

  • ·        Using crypto to purchase goods or services

  • ·        Gifting crypto to someone other than a spouse

  • ·        Receiving crypto as payment for work or services

Each of these is treated as a disposition, meaning you disposed of an asset and must calculate whether you had a gain or a loss based on what you originally paid for it.


What Crypto Activity Is NOT Taxable?

Not every interaction with crypto creates a tax obligation. Simply holding your digital assets is not a taxable event. Transferring crypto between your own wallets is also generally not taxable, though you still need to keep records of those transfers in case of an audit.


Receiving crypto as a gift may not trigger immediate tax in the hands of the recipient, but a taxable event typically occurs when the recipient later disposes of it.


How Do You Calculate and Report Crypto Gains?


The Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) Method Explained

Canada requires you to use the Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) method to calculate your crypto gains and losses. Unlike some other countries that allow different costing methods, the CRA mandates ACB, which averages the total cost of all identical units you own.

Here is a simple example. You buy one unit of a digital asset for $3,000 and later buy another unit for $5,000. Your ACB is $4,000, which is the average of both purchases. If you later sell one unit for $6,000, your capital gain is $2,000, and 50% of that ($1,000) is added to your taxable income.

According to dTax’s Canada crypto tax guide, you must convert all transactions to CAD using the exchange rate on the date of the transaction, and you need to track your ACB carefully across every purchase and every sale.


Which CRA Forms Do You Need to File?

The forms you need depend on how the CRA classifies your activity:

  • ·        Schedule 3 (Capital Gains or Losses): Report all crypto dispositions here if you are taxed as an investor. Include the proceeds, the ACB, and the resulting gain or loss for each transaction.

  • ·        Form T2125 (Statement of Business or Professional Activities): Use this form if your crypto activity is classified as business income, for example if you are a frequent trader or commercial miner.

  • ·        Form T1135 (Foreign Income Verification): If you hold digital assets on foreign exchanges or in wallets outside Canada, and the total cost exceeds $100,000 CAD at any point during the year, you must file this form.


The filing deadline for most individuals is April 30, 2026 for the 2025 tax year. If you are self-employed, you have until June 15, 2026 to file, but any balance owing must still be paid by April 30 to avoid interest charges.

As outlined in Bitcoin.com’s Canadian crypto tax guide, this fair market value also becomes the cost basis for that asset going forward. So if the value of the crypto rises after you receive it and you later sell it, you will also face a capital gain on top of the income you already reported.


This two-step tax obligation catches many small business owners off guard. Make sure your bookkeeping records the CAD value of every crypto payment at the exact time it was received.

  • ·        Late filing penalty: 5% of your balance owing, plus 1% for each full month the return is late (up to 12 months). Repeat offenders face 10% plus 2% per month for up to 20 months.

  • ·        Underreporting penalty (gross negligence): 50% of the understated tax under Section 163(2) of the Income Tax Act.

  • ·        Tax evasion: Penalties can reach up to 200% of taxes owed, plus the possibility of criminal prosecution.


The CRA has confirmed it works with Canadian crypto exchanges to obtain customer transaction data, and it uses blockchain analytics tools to match wallet activity with reported income. Transactions over $10,000 are automatically flagged. In other words, the assumption that crypto activity is invisible to the CRA is simply no longer accurate.


The CRA has audited hundreds of crypto cases in recent years and is expected to increase that number significantly as new reporting frameworks take effect. If you are a GTA resident with unreported crypto activity, the risk of an audit is real and growing.

Tips to Stay CRA-Compliant and Reduce Your Crypto Tax Bill

Keep Records of Every Transaction

This is the single most important habit for any crypto holder. The CRA expects you to keep detailed records for a minimum of six years, including:

  • ·        The date of every transaction

  • ·        The amount in CAD at the time of the transaction

  • ·        The type of transaction (purchase, sale, swap, payment received)

  • ·        Wallet addresses and exchange account records

  • ·        All fees paid, including transaction and transfer fees


According to Remitbee’s 2026 crypto tax guide, you should export your transaction history from every exchange you use regularly, since platforms do not always store records indefinitely. If an exchange closes, reconstructing years of activity can be extremely difficult.


How Does the Superficial Loss Rule Work?

If you sell a digital asset at a loss and repurchase the same asset within 30 days before or after the sale, the CRA will deny the capital loss claim. This is known as the superficial loss rule, and it applies to crypto the same way it does to stocks.


The practical advice is straightforward: if you want to claim a capital loss and offset your gains, wait at least 31 days before repurchasing the same asset. Alternatively, you can use the loss to offset other capital gains you have realized during the year, or carry it backward up to three years or forward indefinitely.

North Dakota state Rep. Liz Conmy and Pilot killed in fiery plane crash near Minneapolis

North Dakota state Rep. Liz Conmy, 67, and pilot Joe Cass died Saturday when their single-engine plane crashed into a suburban park in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, shortly after takeoff from Crystal Airport. Emergency crews found the wreckage engulfed in flames.


The Beech F33A went down just before noon, barely twenty minutes after radar records showed it lifting off at 11:30 a.m. and heading north. Then it vanished from tracking systems. Bystanders called police. By the time first responders reached the green space in Brooklyn Park, a suburb north of Minneapolis, the aircraft was burning, The US Sun reported.


The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed two people were aboard. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the crash. Authorities have not yet determined a cause.


Who was Liz Conmy?

Conmy, a Democrat from Fargo, represented the North Dakota Democratic, Nonpartisan League Party, the state affiliate of the national Democratic Party. She was a mother of four who began serving in the legislature in 2023, the New York Post reported. Federal investigators are still working to determine what brought the plane down.


Her party released a statement on X that captured the shock felt in Bismarck and beyond. The North Dakota Democratic, Nonpartisan League Party wrote:

"We are completely heartbroken and gutted by the loss of Representative Liz Conmy. Her death is a profound loss for our state."


North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong, a Republican, also offered condolences. Fox News reported Armstrong's statement praising Conmy's record of service.

"Liz served her state and community with care and compassion."

Armstrong added, in remarks carried by the Post:


"Kjersti and I are saddened by this tragic loss and offer our deepest condolences to her family, friends and fellow legislators."


The bipartisan tone from the governor's office was notable. Whatever divides North Dakota's political parties, a colleague's sudden death in a burning aircraft is the kind of event that silences ordinary disagreements, at least for a time. The recent death of Georgia Democrat David Scott drew similar cross-party acknowledgment.


What we know about the crash

Radar data tells a brief, grim story. The Beech F33A departed Crystal Airport on Saturday morning. It climbed and traveled north. Then, at roughly 11:51 a.m., the aircraft dropped off tracking systems, Newsmax reported. Within minutes, witnesses in Brooklyn Park saw the plane come down and erupt in fire.


Crews extinguished the blaze and confirmed both occupants, Conmy and Cass, were dead. No one on the ground was reported injured, a small mercy given the crash site sat in a park in a populated suburb.

Crystal Airport closed after the incident. Operations have since resumed. The crash area itself is expected to remain closed for several days as federal investigators comb through the wreckage.


The NTSB has formally opened an investigation into the Beech F33A crash. The FAA is also involved. Neither agency has offered a preliminary finding on what caused the aircraft to go down so soon after takeoff. That question, mechanical failure, pilot incapacitation, weather, or something else, remains entirely open.


Fatal crashes involving small aircraft raise recurring questions about general-aviation safety, maintenance standards, and pilot training. The recent scrutiny of air-traffic staffing after the deadly Air Canada crash at LaGuardia underscored how thin the margin for error can be in American aviation, even at major airports, let alone smaller fields like Crystal.


A legislator's life cut short

AP News confirmed Conmy was from Fargo and served in the state legislature as a Democrat. She entered office in 2023, making her a relatively new member of the chamber. Her four children now face a loss no family should have to absorb.

State Sen. Tim Mathern also confirmed her death, Newsmax reported. The confirmation from multiple officials, her party, the governor, and a fellow legislator, left no ambiguity about the victim's identity.


The pilot, Joe Cass, has received far less public attention. His identity was reported by the New York Post. No further details about Cass, his background, his relationship to Conmy, or his flying experience, have been made public in the immediate aftermath.

The loss of any public servant in sudden, violent circumstances sends a particular kind of shock through a small-state legislature. North Dakota's House has just 94 members. Every seat matters. The death of longtime New York Democrat Eliot Engel earlier reminded the political world how quickly the familiar roster of names can change.


Open questions

Investigators have not said what caused the Beech F33A to fall from the sky. They have not disclosed the plane's maintenance history, flight plan, or whether the pilot reported any trouble before the aircraft disappeared from radar. The NTSB's full investigation could take months.


It remains unclear why Conmy, a Fargo-based legislator, was flying out of Crystal Airport near Minneapolis, or what the purpose of the trip was. None of the official statements addressed the reason for the flight.


Tragedies involving elected officials inevitably prompt broader reflection. Sen. Mark Warner's recent loss of his daughter drew an outpouring of sympathy across party lines, as this crash has. These moments remind Americans that public life carries private weight, and sometimes unbearable cost.


For now, the wreckage sits in a cordoned-off park in Brooklyn Park. Federal investigators will pick through it. A family in Fargo will begin to grieve. And the North Dakota legislature will carry on with one fewer voice in the chamber.


Two people boarded a small plane Saturday morning. Twenty minutes later, both were gone. The facts will come when the NTSB finishes its work. Until then, the only honest response is the one Governor Armstrong offered: condolences, and the decency to let investigators do their job.

This got impossibly long and so I’m going to break it up into sections.

This is section 1: Theory

Theory: what you believe is what you get

 

There is an objective reality, but it can only be perceived and partaken of subjectively. We see what we expect to see, what we are told to seek, what we are taught to project and this makes the feedback loops of perception and reality into something both inescapable and unavoidable:


your perceptions determine what meaning and substance you subjectively apply to the objective evidence of the world around you. (worse, it also biases which evidence you select to seek out in the first place so the effects are multiplicative)

Your actions are based upon these subjective determinations.


And these actions then cause objective effects which are then once more filtered subjectively through the minds and sensoria of both you and everyone affected by you.

And thus perception begets reality and like neo and the vase oracle, many prophecies become self-fulfilling.


When the subjective filters of one or both sides of an experience get sufficiently distorted or biased, you get feedback loops and these can be beneficial or pernicious and can feed off one another in complex fashion.


  • ·        Having high trust expectations of highly trustworthy people causes a golden rule spiral which is a lovely place to live. we expect the best and we mostly get it and small foibles are treated with charity and benefit of doubt is given. rough spots are ridden over, trust prevails, and trustworthiness with it. this is a stable equilibrium.

 

  • ·        But having low trust expectations of high trust people breaks the high trust system and actions will rapidly move to align. some begin to look at others with suspicion instead of charity and expectation of attack pervades which results in broken trust and attacks made because they are (mistakenly) framed as self-defense. the best way to cause a trust fracture is always to claim that “this person has already attacked you.” this will cause the perception of normal and reasonable action to appear like provocation or threat. such systems are unstable and rapidly devolve to the war of all against all.

 

  • ·        So too will high trust expectations of low trust people because the outcomes will continually fail to match your model and you’ll either learn to stop trusting or get consumed in suicidal empathy. being told repeately that “you have to trust these people and you’re a bad person if you do not” while those people repeately show themselves to be untrustworthy just makes it worse. the strong minded rise against it as aggression and war, the weak minded and consensus-clinging cave in to it and seek to project it as virtue while being eaten alive. again, (and either way) you devolve to war.

 

  • ·        Low trust expectations of low trust people is just the war of all against all and you either wind up abrogating the social contract entirely or what remains of that contract organizes and goes to war until trust is (generally through violence or dictatorship) restored. turning second world systems (high trust systems run by low trust people) back into trustable institutions is generally impossible in any other way. once mired in the lower left, getting back out takes some real doing.


 

This creates an interesting matrix and implies that there are basically two ways to break a high trust golden rule/golden age spiral:

1.    the first is to convince people not to trust people who are, in fact, trustworthy.

2.    the second is to flood the box with untrustworthy people either by

a.    importing low trust people into a system

b.    making (per step 1) formerly high trust people into low trust people by convincing them that they are under attack from people who meant them no harm


I would argue that both have been going on in great abundance over the last 20 or so years and that the effects upon the west are rapidly approaching an event horizon in which violence will become an increasing norm, perhaps even an increasing necessity to the point where it becomes unavoidable. you can see it starting as effects begin to spiral.

Views on political violence are changing and there is one group in particular that has embraced it in far greater proportion than the others.

And the desire is ramping up through the generations and is especially concentrated in blacks and hispanics (apart from the boomers who are a weird outlier here). of other interest, whites in gen Z are rapidly catching up.

This view is more prevalent in males, but gen Z females (nearly all very liberal) have caught up aggressively. (data here)

If you want to understand how this happens, it happens like this:

Nothing about this is an accident, it’s orchestration. groups like USAID, soros, neville signham, SPLC, and a massive melodrama of media are all pushing this. the “fine people hoax” calling trump a white supremacist was just another in a long line of russia hoaxes and other such outlandish vilification. (here’s what he actually said)


This did not “just happen” it was a full throated info-war waged in response to the first trump victory derailing a set of carefully crafted plans from creepy klaus the cool kids table at davos.

The whole issue has been manufactured to break trust and thereby to shatter the institutions and norms of the west.

It’s not being done by accident, it has one purpose:

It’s to move people from the high trust golden rule square to the distrustful square by convincing them of the ill intent of others and relentlessly telling them that they are under attack.

The fact of the praxis is as deadly simple as it is deadly serious.


This takes us back to a thought experiment i used the other day:

Imagine you’re in a room with another person.

Between you is a table. on the table is a loaded handgun.

How do you feel?


You are strangers and do not know each other.

what now?

It all comes down to assumption of intent.

To the extent that you assume ill intent, you cannot let him have the gun first.

Of course, the reciprocal is true as well if he assumes your ill intent.


And each of you must act on this or risk being robbed/killed/whatever.

Your tolerance for risk and uncertainty plummets as does your charity in interpreting actions.

See how losing trust makes us each untrustworthy?

Because he thinks you are a threat and you think he is a threat, you both become threats even if none was intended.

You’re both so hyper sensitized to any sign of the other making a move to attack or threaten that it’s simply too easy to set you off.


And accidents happen.

And the perception makes the reality.

Because the situation was contrived to be precarious.

If anyone signals, whether inadvertently or deliberately, the other now needs to try to move faster and so even an innocent action or stumble begets assumption of attack and thus, attack from the other side.


So, the literal difference between two otherwise peaceful people being able to stand peacefully next to a gun or competing to kill one another is “were you each told the other was trustworthy or untrustworthy?”

And the more trustworthy or untrustworthy you expected to find them, the more effect you get.


And that’s why they do this in such outlandish and apocalyptic terms.

It’s to be sure you know that the other person means you the worst sort of ill and to give you no leeway to wait and see.


Worse still, as discussed HERE once your perception bias has been confirmed, rather than realizing that whoever lied to you is a liar, you’ll see them as having given you a good and accurate warning. the whole thing is a self winding clock to entrap the credulous and embroil them in conflict and mistrust.

It’s done to destroy trust and to provide a pretext for hate and thereby for violence.

It replaces comity with animosity, erases faith in the systems of human flourishing and engenders trust in the mendacious and manipulative.

Of course, the politico-media loves it.


It’s the systemic unpicking of the idea of high trust by creating impossible dilemmas by attacking people until they respond then calling your further attacks self-defense.

Keep them hostile, scared, and fragmented.

Both readers and slaves are made in such ways.
