Workshop Description

 

Disrupting and decentering whiteness is a core component of the overall goal of creating an anti-racist educational space. This workshop explores how we can disrupt the centering of whiteness in higher education and unpack white supremacy cultures material effects and its harm on racialized students, faculty, and staff. Dismantling Racism Works defines “White supremacy culture” as the idea (ideology) that white people and their ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and actions are superior to people of colour and their ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and actions.

 

Learning Outcomes

  • ·        Differentiate between “whiteness” and “white people”

  • ·        Understand key terms/theories related to white supremacist culture in higher education (such as Hegemonic Masculinity and White Feminism, Perfectionism)

  • ·        Identify and understand how white supremacist culture expresses itself interpersonally as well as structurally

  • ·        Use an intersectional lens to analyze how we can disrupt our actions, thoughts, and beliefs in our roles

  • ·        Provide you with strategies to use in your roles that validate racialized people and their intersectional lived experiences

 

Participant Expectations

Participants can expect to engage in small breakout discussions, self-reflective exercises as well as a lecture style presentation. Participants can keep cameras on/off and engage as desired for the lecture part of the session and are encouraged to actively participate in the breakout rooms. Participants will have a break in the middle of the session.

“A hustle in the oil patch”, a “dirty legacy”: These are just a couple of the ways that the escalating costs of abandoning and reclaiming non-producing oil wells in Canada have been described.

In a new paper, we look back over 40 years and identify three factors that have led to this unprecedented regulatory failure.

 

A looming crisis

In Alberta, roughly 237,000 drilled wells will need to be abandoned, and the land remediated and reclaimed. About 80,000 of these wells are currently non-producing (referred to as inactive wells), while another 90,000 abandoned wells still await remediation and reclamation.

 

To make matters worse, bankruptcies in the oil and gas industry have left thousands of wells without responsible owners throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan (known as orphan wells). Inactive wells that have not been properly abandoned and reclaimed pose a significant environmental risk, including from methane emissions (a potent greenhouse gas).

 

The looming financial and environmental crisis is Canada-wide, but its epicentre is in Alberta.

Alberta’s auditor general has recently reported estimates of $60 billion in closure liabilities in the conventional (non-oil sands) sector. Meanwhile the province holds less than $295 million from industry in security — 0.5 per cent of official estimates.


And $60 billion is the low estimate — leaked documents from a joint industry-regulator project in 2018 estimated liabilities upwards of $130 billion. In other words, taking on these liabilities will at least double and possibly triple Alberta’s current debt of $80 billion.

 

How did we get here?

Various explanations have been put forward to justify this appalling state of affairs, including downturns in the oil and gas industry. Alberta’s auditor general has shown, however, that the province’s closure liability has grown steadily over the past decades — in good times and in bad.

 

The slight drop in the number of inactive wells in the past few years is due to the federal government providing $1.7 billion to Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan for abandonment and reclamation work in April 2020. Alberta received the majority of this funding in exchange for a commitment to make regulatory changes and ensure adherence to the polluter pays principle.

Subsequently, Alberta announced a new Liability Management Framework, committed to reducing inactive wells, preventing them from becoming orphans, and ensuring timely reclamation.

 

At the time, the then-minister of energy admitted that successive governments had long been aware of the growing closure liability problem and notes “we’re looking at decades where no government has been willing to move on this file.”

 

In our new paper, we show how this massive regulatory failure is best understood as the predictable result of three historic deficiencies in Alberta’s regulatory regime. These failures include a lack of transparency, excessive regulatory discretion and pervasive regulatory capture by industry.

 

Lack of transparency: The Alberta Energy Regulator and its predecessors have cultivated a culture of secrecy and non-transparency that has stymied accountability, democratic scrutiny and discouraged penalties for non-compliance.

Excessive discretion: Alberta’s governing laws and regulations have been — and remain — far too reliant of the regulator’s discretion which can be co-opted by short-term political, economic, and social pressures that favour business as usual.

 

Regulatory capture: The Alberta Energy Regulator and its predecessors have a long history of allowing industry to influence the design and administration of the liability management regime. Some illustrations of this regulatory capture include the regulator’s refusal to require adequate security deposits for closure work and grossly underestimating actual closure liabilities.


Because we find that these three core deficiencies persist in Alberta’s new Liability Management Framework, we conclude that it too is unlikely to succeed in ensuring that the polluter pays for the sector’s closure work.


In addition to the $1.7 billion referred to above, Canadian taxpayers have already started paying for closure work on orphan wells. This is the case despite the fact that entities such as Alberta’s Orphan Well Association (OWA) were established on the understanding that industry would collectively bear responsibility for their clean-up.

 

What started as a trickle of public funds - a $30 million grant from the provincial government in 2009 and a $50,000 contribution from Alberta Energy in 2012 — has ballooned into hundreds of millions of dollars in interest-free government loans to the OWA, with loan repayment scheduled to run until 2035.

 

A public inquiry

Given the scale of this liability problem and the unprecedented financial and environmental risks it poses to the public, we recommend that a public inquiry — led by principles of deliberative democracy — be struck with a mandate to undertake a full and transparent accounting for policies implemented over the past several decades.

Canada is on the path to having the vast majority of its oil and gas cleanup liabilities become the public’s problem. A public inquiry and serious reform are the only things that can turn things around.

Around the Defense Department

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth is skipping the latest meeting of Ukraine’s allies at NATO headquarters in Brussels. That’s a first since the group was set up three years ago, the Associated Press reports. Hegseth will not join via video call-in, U.S. defense officials said. 

 

“It is the latest in a series of steps that the U.S. has taken to distance itself from the Ukraine war effort,” AP’s Lita Baldor writes. While Kyiv defends itself from three-plus years of gradual Russian military invasion, the Ukraine Defense Contact Group has provided Kyiv with an estimated “$126 billion in weapons and military assistance, including over $66.5 billion from the U.S.,” according to AP. But “Hegseth has upended that position by stepping away from a leadership role, providing no new military aid and now abandoning the gathering altogether,” Baldor notes. 

 

Hegseth’s team says he won’t arrive in Europe until Wednesday evening, coming off a trip last weekend to Singapore. The Pentagon chief is planning to attend a meeting of NATO military chiefs in Brussels Thursday and later for D-Day commemorations in Normandy, France, on June 6. “The Secretary will deliver a message at the defense ministerial focused on advancing President Trump’s call for NATO allies to commit to spend 5% of their GDP on defense and refocusing NATO on collective defense and deterrence,” Hegseth’s spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement Tuesday. 

 

One big lesson from Ukraine’s recent surprise drone attack on Russian airbases: The U.S. could be attacked in the very same fashion and the results could be similarly devastating, three different major U.S. news outlets warn today—the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. The latter leverages the attack to argue that critics of President Trump’s sprawling and costly Golden Dome missile-defense architecture are naive, at best, in our current and evolving era of drone warfare. (To be fair, the Times notes Golden Dome as currently conceived would not have prevented an attack like the one Ukraine inflicted on Russia over the weekend.)


The Journal’s editorial board also makes the case for “hardened aircraft shelters” and more defense spending. The Post extends that thinking to “strategic missiles and silos, or strategic nuclear submarines at port,” as well as “U.S. energy grids, transportation hubs and shipyards.” And Bill Hennigan of the Times branches out still more to include U.S. “military bases, ports and command headquarters peppered across the globe.” 

 

Hennigan: “Congress is poised to set aside about $1.3 billion this fiscal year for the Pentagon to develop and deploy counter-drone technologies. This is a good start. But the Pentagon’s most ambitious and expensive plans fail to address the threat,” he argues.

Ukraine, Russia exchange attacks 

Developing: Ukrainian officials claim to have carried out a new attack on the 12-mile Kerch Strait Bridge, which links occupied Crimea with the Russian mainland. If confirmed, it would be the third time the Ukrainians have attacked the bridge since Russia launched its full-scale invasion more than three years ago. 

 

Kyiv’s Defense Ministry shared a video of the purported attack Tuesday on social media, saying Ukrainian elements executed “a new, unique special operation and struck...this time underwater!” Explosives were allegedly placed on the bridge’s support columns, “And today, at 4:44 a.m., without any civilian casualties, the first explosive device was detonated!” the Defense Ministry said. “The bridge is now in critical condition…thanks to 1,100 kg of explosives in TNT equivalent,” they added. 

 

Russia used the bridge “as a logistical artery to supply its troops,” a Ukrainian official said in a statement, according to the New York Times.

 

Moscow, meanwhile, stepped up rocket attacks on Ukraine’s Sumy city, killing at least three people and wounding more than two dozen others on Tuesday. 

 

Looking ahead: “Military analysts say that if Russia advanced 12 miles into Ukraine, its forces could target the city of Sumy with short-range weapons like small exploding drones,” the Times reports. “Such attacks in Kherson, in southern Ukraine, have killed at least 150 civilians; a United Nations commission said last week that those attacks amounted to crimes against humanity.”

 

Update: More details emerge from Ukraine’s surprise drone attack over the weekend. At least four Russian air bases were targeted, as far east as the Siberian region of Irkutsk, Reuters reported Tuesday. 

 

According to satellite imagery, affected targets appear to include two destroyed Tu-22 Backfires and four strategic heavy Tu-95 bombers at Irkutsk. A separate base in Russia’s northwestern Murmansk region appears to have hosted three attacked Tu-95s. The Kremlin said three other locations were targeted, including bases in the Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur regions; but air defense elements prevented damage at those sites, Russian officials claimed. 

 

For what it’s worth, Ukrainian officials said 41 Russian aircraft were struck in the drone attack, which reportedly took 18 months to plan. However, Reuters notes “The Ukrainian military added 12 aircraft to its running tally of Russia's wartime military losses on Tuesday, without elaborating.”

 

A second opinion: “This was an ingenious, well-planned and precisely executed strike on the Russian bomber fleet, which is an absolutely legitimate target for Ukraine to strike,” retired U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery told The D Brief. 

 

“These same Russian strategic bombers have been hammering Ukrainian targets—civilian and military, without a concern for civilian casualties for nearly three years—so much so that they caused President Trump to rightly say ‘Vladimir STOP’,” he said. “Unfortunately President Trump has hesitated to put a maximum pressure campaign on the aggressor in this war—Russia—but instead has pressured only the victim—Ukraine. As a result President Putin has taken no steps to end his violent attacks. If President Trump wants the war to end he has the economic and military tools to pressure President Putin and make it happen,” Montgomery said.

 

 

Bigger picture: 

 

 

Trump 2.0

Despite Golden Dome, Space Force budget would shrink again under 2026 spending plan. The young service’s budget would shrink for a second straight year under the Trump administration’s 2026 proposal, which experts said would force the Pentagon to rely on the yet-to-be-passed reconciliation bill to fund the Golden Dome missile-defense project and other space priorities. 

 

The White House is requesting $26.3 billion for the service, according to budget documents released on Friday. That’s about 13 percent less, in real terms, than the $29.4 billion requested by the Biden administration for 2025. Defense One’s Audrey Decker has more, here.

 

What will DOD civilians do at the border? The Pentagon won’t say. After releasing a Monday memo about sending some civilian employees to support the Homeland Security Department with the southern border mission and “internal immigration enforcement,” Hegseth’s office has declined to provide any further details, including how many people are going, what their job backgrounds are, and which missions they will be fulfilling. 

 

This is in stark contrast to nearly seven years of ongoing DOD support to the DHS border mission—including during the first Trump administration—when the Pentagon routinely released troop levels and descriptions of their activities.

 

It’s likely that the jobs will be largely administrative, according to Mark Cancian, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Defense One’s Meghann Myers has more, here.

Judy Note: This was the beginning of the end for the Cabal. The children were being avenged. In secret, Trump’s Global Military Alliance was backing Putin. But this Globalist Deep State Cabal attempts to get the World into a nuclear war was not going to work as it had in the past, where the war strategy was based on a Global Disinformation campaign – that was now falling apart.

 

The Global Disinformation Index (GDI), based in the U.K. and backed by the National Endowment for Democracy, had received millions of US Taxpayer dollars under the pretense of fighting foreign disinformation. It’s real target was President Trump, the America First movement and any media outlet that didn’t align with the Globalist narrative.

 

GDI, the SPLC, Big Tech and intelligence-linked NGOs tracked narratives, created blacklists, manipulated search algorithms and fed justification for bans across every major platform. Even right now the US State Department’s Global Engagement Center was training foreign governments in censorship protocols, while the UN, WHO, Google and AI coalitions were replicating it worldwide.

 

Trump’s Global Military Alliance was ending all that as they released the Global Currency Reset and gave The People’s money back to The People. As Q would say, “Hold the Line. Prepare. Trust The Plan.”

Apparently the TRB so-called “Trump Gold Products” Scam is still alive and well on the Internet. Initially I received well over 400 email complaints on the matter before I had to cut them off. Recently I checked into it again. Now they are promising that you can still cash in your TRB products by setting up a Quantum Account with them (where they will claim you have over 40 million $ in your account). Only after you have given them your personal information, plus paid them thousands of dollars more – they will then promise to release the monies to you – which they never do. At least, no one has proven to me that they have ever received monies from investing in TRB products.

I understand there are several investigations open with local police and the FBI on this very sophisticated TRB Products Scam.
