Shattered Family speaks out after father and husband shot dead on Yorkdale GO Bus
Osemwengie Irorere was fatally shot on a GO Bus in Toronto, becoming the city’s first homicide of the year.
The first sign of tragedy was a devoted father’s unusual silence on his daughter’s birthday. The next was when the Nigerian police knocked on their door.
Osemwengie Irorere, a 46-year-old man from Nigeria, moved to Canada with the goal of pursuing a profession to build a better future for his family. That dream and every other aspiration Osemwengie had were halted on Jan. 4 on a GO Bus near Yorkdale station, where he was shot and killed in Toronto’s first homicide of the year.
Police arrested Tyrel Gibson, 40, a few moments after the shooting. Gibson has an extensive criminal history, including convictions for attempted murder and firearm offences. He was charged with first-degree murder.
In an interview with the Star, Osemwengie’s younger brother, Eric Irorere, a registered nurse who lives in the United Kingdom, spoke about the devastating impact of the death of his brother, whom he described as a gentle, dedicated father and husband.

Eric said his late brother ran a successful printing press in Nigeria before deciding to pursue nursing.
“He was very talented, he was hardworking, he would never turn down a job, not even the dirty jobs,” he said.
“He loved Nigerian music, loved to dress well.”
Eric’s final memory of his late brother is a missed call on Jan. 1, and prior to that, he had to cut a call short.
“I was in Nigeria, the network was a bit slow, and I was busy with the festivities, that’s the only pain I have, that the last time we spoke, we didn’t speak at length,” he said.
Amir Rahman, Osemwengie’s landlord remembers him as a “caring and clean” tenant. Osemwengie had shared plans to stay long-term and bring his family to Canada, specifically choosing the building ,so his daughter could enjoy the swimming pool.
“He wanted to bring his family together, to live the life he wanted,” Eric said.
Osemwengie’s boss at JBS Industrial Cleaning Services, Dwight Thompson, described him as one of his best employees.
“He was a very good worker, one of the best I had; he was with me for almost three years,” he said.
Following in the footsteps of his younger siblings, who are both medical professionals in the United Kingdom, Osemwengie moved to Canada in late 2023, where he enrolled in a medical administration course at Alpha Career College in North York.
Osemwengie’s wife and four children, ages 20, 18, 16, and 13, remained in Nigeria, with hopes of joining him in Canada.

On his way home from work after his Sunday shift around 7 p.m., he got on the GO Bus in early January.
Eric said Osemwengie was on a call with a friend and had his headset on when he began to cough suddenly. The friend on the call assumed he was probably choking as a result of the cold, not knowing he had been shot, Eric said, recounting the incident.
An eyewitness who previously spoke to the Star said that after being shot, Osemwengie cried out for 10 seconds, and he called out for help, but no one reacted.

“No one could hear anything because everyone’s ears were ringing. Even when I was saying, ‘Yo, someone got shot,’ no one was reacting,” said the man, who asked to remain anonymous out of safety concerns.
Toronto police reached out to the Nigerian Police Force, which then showed up at Osemwengie’s family’s residence and told them he had been shot and killed.
Eric was on vacation in Nigeria at the time and remembers telling the police, “No, no, it can’t be, there must have been a mistake.”
Still doubting the news from the police, Eric reached out to a friend in Toronto and asked them to visit the police station, who confirmed the incident after identifying the body and receiving his ID.
Impact of death
For Osemwengie’s wife and children, the tragedy has shattered their dreams of moving to Canada.
“That was their plan, to start a new life here. Now, the father who was supposed to lead them is gone,” Eric said.
“I have not been able to go to work,” Eric said. “I can’t sleep. I have been handling all the communication between the police, victim support services, and our family back home in Nigeria.”
Unanswered questions
Eric described a torturous battle to get answers or adequate support from authorities in both Canada and Nigeria. Acting as the primary point of contact, he noted that neither answers or assistance were forthcoming until the family began “pushing very hard.”
After consistent pressure, they were referred to victim support services, which offered $5,000 to the family.
To offset the financial strain, they set up a GoFundMepage in order to repatriate the body to Nigeria.

Justice Alito's 20-year milestone and upcoming book fuel retirement speculation

Legal scholars are reading the tea leaves on Justice Samuel Alito, and they like what they see. Two prominent law professors have pointed to a constellation of factors, including Alito's age, his recently passed 20-year tenure mark, favourable political conditions, and the curious timing of a forthcoming book, as signals that the 75-year-old justice may be preparing to step down from the Supreme Court.
To be clear: Alito has said nothing. His office has said nothing. The Supreme Court did not respond to requests for comment. This is informed speculation, not a confirmed development. But the speculation itself is worth examining, because the logic behind it is sound, and the stakes are enormous.
The Case for Retirement
Alito hit 20 years on the bench at the end of January, a milestone reached by only a fraction of justices in the Court's history. He's 75. The average justice serves roughly 16 years, the Daily Mail reported. Historically, justices who reach the 20-year mark in their late seventies to early eighties tend to use that window to retire on their own terms.
NYU law professor Melissa Murray, speaking on the Strict Scrutiny podcast, connected the dots. She noted that the 20-year mark is a natural inflection point:
If you retire before you lose the Senate, then you make the whole glide path so much easier for getting in your preferred candidate.
Republicans currently control both the Senate and the White House. That alignment won't last forever. Midterm elections have a stubborn historical pattern of punishing the party in power, and Murray's advice to Alito was blunt:
Do it before the midterms change everything.
The political math is simple. A retirement now, or within the next several months, gives President Trump a clean path to nominate a successor and gives the Republican Senate a clean path to confirm one. Wait too long, and that calculus could change dramatically.
The Book That Raised Eyebrows
Then there's the book. Alito has a forthcoming publication expected to drop in October 2026, right at the start of the Supreme Court's new term. That timing struck both Murray and Georgetown law professor Steve Vladeck as unusual, to put it mildly.
Vladeck called the release date a "pretty big tell since one can't exactly go on a book tour during the first argument session of the term." Murray made the same observation:
The publication for his forthcoming book .... published during the first week of October term 2026 ... that is usually a time when sitting justices are quite busy.
A sitting justice doesn't schedule a book launch during one of the busiest stretches of the Court's calendar. A recently retired one, however, has all the time in the world. The timing only makes sense if Alito doesn't expect to be on the bench when the book hits shelves.
What It Would Mean
If Alito does retire, Trump would have the opportunity to replace a reliable conservative justice with a younger one, potentially securing that seat's ideological orientation for decades. Murray acknowledged this directly:
This is obviously someone who wants to ensure that he is replaced by a like-minded successor.
That's not cynicism. That's how the system works, and every justice who has ever timed a retirement to political conditions has understood it. Ruth Bader Ginsburg's refusal to retire during the Obama administration, and the consequences that followed, remains the cautionary tale that haunts the left. Conservatives learned from that mistake without having to make it themselves.
Strategic Clarity, Not Gamesmanship
The left will inevitably frame any Alito retirement as a power grab, a scheme to "stack" the Court. This framing collapses under the slightest scrutiny. A president nominating a justice to fill a vacancy is not court-packing. It is the constitutional process working exactly as designed. Every president who has ever held office during a vacancy has done the same thing.
What the critics really object to is not the process but the outcome: a Court that reflects the judicial philosophy of the presidents and senators the American people actually elected. The conservative majority on the Supreme Court didn't materialize from thin air. It was built through elections, nominations, and confirmations, each one subject to democratic accountability.
If Alito steps down and Trump nominates a successor, that successor will face Senate hearings, a confirmation vote, and intense public scrutiny. The system doesn't need to be reformed. It needs to be respected.
The Window Won't Stay Open
Nothing is confirmed. Alito may serve another five years. But the factors Murray and Vladeck identified are real, and they all point in the same direction. Age, tenure, political alignment, and a suspiciously timed book release form a pattern that experienced Court watchers recognize.
The smart move is the obvious one. Alito knows it. The White House knows it. And if the left is already anxious about what comes next, that tells you everything about who holds the advantage right now.

FIAT money is backed by a country’s government instead of a physical commodity or financial instrument. This means most coin and paper currencies that are used throughout the world are FIAT money, this includes the US Dollar, the British Pound, the Euro and the SA Rand.
All Basel 4 compliant countries will then put out their new currencies and take the old money in, so the US Dollar will become obsolete outside of the US, and millions hidden will become worthless.
The world will use the FIAT and then transition over to the precious metals / commodity-backed currencies, and the USD / Sterling Pound and Euro will have no value whatsoever anymore.
