House Democrats introduce 25th Amendment bill targeting Trump in a move with zero chance of success

House Democrats on Tuesday rolled out a 10-page bill that would create a 17-member commission to evaluate whether President Donald Trump is mentally or physically fit to serve, a maneuver built on the 25th Amendment that has no realistic path forward in a Republican-controlled Congress.


The legislation, introduced by House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin of Maryland, landed with 50 Democratic co-sponsors. It arrived in the wake of Trump's social media post warning that a "whole civilization will die tonight" during the standoff with Iran, a statement that triggered a wave of Democratic calls for removal or impeachment.


The bill would empower a panel of physicians, psychiatrists, and former senior executive-branch officials, appointed by congressional leaders of both parties, to conduct a medical examination of the president and determine whether he can discharge the duties of his office. It is, by any honest reading, a political statement dressed in constitutional clothing.


What the bill actually says

The legislation spells out a specific structure. Democratic and Republican leaders of each chamber would each select four physicians and four psychiatrists. Those 16 members would then vote to choose a 17th member to serve as chair, as Fox News Digital reported.

The bill's operative language states that "the Commission shall carry out a medical examination of the President to determine whether the President is mentally or physically unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office."


Raskin framed the effort in sweeping terms, tying it to Trump's conduct during the Iran conflict. He said Democrats have a constitutional obligation to act.

"We have a solemn duty to play our defined role under the 25th Amendment by setting up this body to act alongside the Vice President and the Cabinet."


He went further, claiming that public confidence in Trump's fitness had collapsed. Raskin cited a litany of grievances, from the president's rhetoric on Iran to his online posts comparing himself to Jesus Christ to what Raskin described as aggressive insults directed at the Pope.


"Public trust in Donald Trump's ability to meet the duties of his office has dropped to unprecedented lows as he threatens to destroy entire civilizations, unleashes chaos in the Middle East while violating Congressional war powers, aggressively insults the Pope of the Catholic Church, and sends out artistic renderings online likening himself to Jesus Christ."


That is a lot of rhetoric packed into a single sentence. But rhetoric is not a constitutional case, and Raskin's bill faces a hard wall of political arithmetic.


The White House fires back

The administration did not let the bill land without a response. White House spokesman Davis Ingle dismissed the effort and turned the fitness question back on Democrats and their own record with former President Joe Biden.


"President Trump's sharpness, unmatched energy, and historic accessibility stand in stark contrast to what we saw during the last administration, when Democrats like Raskin intentionally covered up Joe Biden's serious mental and physical decline from the American people."


Ingle's counterattack lands on ground that many Americans remember well. For years, questions about Biden's cognitive state were waved away by the same Democratic lawmakers now raising alarms about Trump. The contrast is not subtle, and Ingle made sure to underline it. This is not the first time Democrats have revived 25th Amendment talk while dodging questions about their own party's fitness issues.


Iran: the trigger and the context

The immediate catalyst for the bill was Trump's social media warning about Iran. Democrats seized on the post, "whole civilization will die tonight", as evidence of erratic behavior. Many House and Senate Democrats called for Trump to be removed from office or impeached.


But the timeline matters. Trump appeared on "Sunday Morning Futures" and defended his statements, explaining that his tough posture brought Iran to the negotiating table. He said Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire.


"Remember, what do they say to us? For years, I've had to listen to them say, 'Death to America,' right? They say, 'Death to America, death to Israel, America is a Satan, we will destroy America, death to America.' Now, does anybody ever complain to you when they say that? I think that's a big step worse, 'Death to America.'"


Trump's point, that Tehran's longstanding "Death to America" rhetoric draws no comparable outrage from the same lawmakers now demanding his removal, is one his supporters find persuasive. Whether or not one agrees with the style of his diplomacy, the ceasefire he cited is a concrete outcome. Democrats offered no comparable result from their preferred approach of restraint and consultation.

The Associated Press reported that the push was driven by bipartisan alarm over Trump's threat to "wipe out Iran," with congressional offices flooded by constituent calls and emails, some reporting record volumes. But the AP also noted that Democratic leaders and moderates have largely stopped short of endorsing impeachment. Instead, they are pushing war-powers legislation requiring congressional approval for further attacks on Iran, a tacit admission that actual removal is a dead letter.


Rep. Sara Jacobs captured the Democratic argument in comments to the AP: "It is important that even though we were able to get this ceasefire, which I pray holds, that we hold this president accountable for what he threatened because threatening genocide is not just against international law, it's against our federal law, too."


A pattern, not a plan

This is not the first time Democrats have reached for extraordinary constitutional tools to try to end a Trump presidency. The first impeachment in 2019, the second impeachment in 2021, and now a 25th Amendment commission, the instruments change, but the impulse stays the same. Declassified memos have since exposed troubling bias behind the whistleblower complaint that launched the first impeachment, raising fair questions about whether these efforts are driven by genuine constitutional concern or by a refusal to accept electoral outcomes.


The 25th Amendment was designed for genuine incapacity, a president felled by a stroke, an assassination attempt, a medical crisis so severe that the vice president and Cabinet must act. It was not designed as a policy disagreement tool for the minority party. Raskin's bill would create a new body to do what the vice president and Cabinet already have the authority to do, and it would do so at the direction of Congress, a significant structural shift in how the amendment was intended to operate.


Even if the bill somehow passed both chambers, the 25th Amendment's removal mechanism requires the vice president's agreement. The notion that Vice President JD Vance would cooperate with a Democratic-led commission to remove the president he serves is, to put it plainly, not serious.


The bill has 50 Democratic co-sponsors. It has zero Republican co-sponsors. It will not pass the Republican-led House. House Democrats have floated 25th Amendment talk before without committing to real action, and this effort follows the same script.


The real audience

If the bill cannot pass, what is it for? The answer is the same one that explains most minority-party messaging bills: it exists to generate headlines, to keep the removal conversation alive in friendly media, and to give Democratic members something to point to when their base demands action.


That is a legitimate, if cynical, use of the legislative process. But voters should see it for what it is. The 50 co-sponsors are not building a governing coalition. They are performing for a constituency that wants Trump gone by any means available, constitutional, political, or otherwise.


Meanwhile, figures like former CIA Director John Brennan have called for Trump's removal even while facing their own legal scrutiny, a pattern that suggests the removal chorus is less about the Constitution and more about the people who lost power under it.

The deeper problem for Democrats is credibility. They spent years insisting Joe Biden was sharp, engaged, and fully capable, until his own party forced him off the 2024 ticket. Now they want the country to trust their medical and cognitive judgment about a different president. The White House's Ingle put it bluntly, and the point sticks: the party that covered up one president's decline has limited standing to diagnose another's.


Where this goes

Nowhere, in legislative terms. The bill will not receive a committee hearing in the Republican-controlled House. It will not reach the floor. It will not become law. Raskin knows this. The 50 co-sponsors know this.


The 25th Amendment remains available for its intended purpose, a genuine emergency of presidential incapacity, initiated by the vice president and Cabinet. What it is not, and was never meant to be, is a recall mechanism for the party that lost the last election.

Democrats can introduce all the bills they want. But when the constitutional argument is this thin and the political math is this lopsided, the effort tells you more about the people filing it than about the president they're targeting.

Dems Push to Impeach Hegseth

House Democrats plan to introduce five articles of impeachment against War Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday, marking the latest partisan push against a top Trump administration official as tensions escalate over U.S. military operations in Iran.

A seven-page resolution accuses Hegseth of a range of serious offenses, including abuse of power, alleged war crimes, and mishandling of sensitive information, Axios reported.


The effort is being led by Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., and backed by a group of progressive lawmakers and activist organizations.

Despite the sweeping accusations, the measure is widely seen as symbolic, with virtually no chance of passing in the current GOP-led Congress.


Still, it shows Democrats' growing focus on Hegseth as a political target following earlier, unsuccessful impeachment pushes against other Trump Cabinet officials.

The resolution lays out five articles of impeachment, with the first centered on claims that the administration launched military strikes against Iran without congressional authorization.


Ansari and her allies argue that such actions endangered U.S. service members and violated constitutional limits on executive war powers.

Additional articles accuse Hegseth of violating the law of armed conflict, including allegations tied to reported strikes on civilian infrastructure in Iran.

Democrats have pointed to incidents such as the bombing of a girls' school in Minab and attacks on key facilities as evidence of misconduct, claims the administration has strongly disputed.


Another article revisits the so-called "Signalgate" controversy, in which a journalist was mistakenly included in a private messaging thread discussing military operations.

The resolution alleges negligence in handling classified information, along with obstruction of congressional oversight and conduct unbecoming of a defense secretary.

Ansari, who has been outspoken in her opposition to the administration's Iran strategy, said in an X post on April 6 that Hegseth is "complicit" in what she described as an "illegal war."


She has also floated invoking the 25th Amendment against President Donald Trump, escalating rhetoric that critics say reflects political motivations rather than substantive oversight.


The Pentagon swiftly dismissed the impeachment effort as a partisan stunt.

Press secretary Kingsley Wilson told Axios the move is "just another Democrat trying to make headlines" while the Department of War has "decisively and overwhelmingly achieved the President's objectives in Iran."

She added that Hegseth "will continue to protect the homeland and project peace through strength."


Supporters of the administration argue the strikes on Iran are necessary to counter threats and promote stability in the region, pointing to statements from Trump and other officials that the campaign is ultimately aimed at securing freedom and safety for both Americans and the Iranian people.


The impeachment push, while unlikely to advance, highlights the deep partisan divide in Washington over foreign policy and the use of military force, and signals that Democrats are continuing to escalate their opposition heading into a contentious election cycle.

Dutch Sheets says we are about to experience another Renaissance greater than the last, and another Christendom greater than the first (see the two red-lined blocks in the attached chart).  

To Catholics who follow prophecies of saints and holy seers, this corresponds to the short Era of Peace which the Virgin Mary spoke about, when believers will look up at a great sign in the sky and experience an Illumination of Conscience.  

 

To Orthodox believers, Russia will help deliver a revival of the Byzantine Empire which lasted a thousand years.  (Dutch Sheets doesn't go this far in describing Russia - he just says that Russia and China will not try to stop it.)

 

Both Catholics and Orthodox will deeply appreciate how Dutch Sheets explains time from Heaven's point of view, i.e. how the Eucharist transcends time - and how important it was to Jesus to honor it, his shed blood, and celebrate it more than any other Christian experience.  "Just by talking about it, gives it more power."

When the Roman Empire collapsed, guess who saved the libraries.

I stumbled on some old email correspondence from 2016 that is relevant to what's happening today.  It refers to history, like what happened when the Roman Empire fell.  How did people survive?  What can we learn for today in event of collapse by our society?

The father of education was St. Isadore 625 AD.  saved the knowledge of the Roman Empire.  His encyclopedia called the Etymologies was copied by Irish monks and distributed to all the cathedrals of Europe.

 

In the introduction, the Etymologies are seen as "arguably the most influential book after the Bible, in the learned world of the Latin West for a thousand years"

Anyways, while I was there, up alone after everyone went to bed,

I had a chance to read National Geographic special issue on the

Medieval Age in Europe.  It started with the fall of the Roman Empire

and covered a 1,000 year period between that and the Reformation.

I thought it was actually very relevant in discussing a time when people

had to do their own farming instead of relying on the import systems

of the Roman Empire.  Serfs rented from Lords and sold their farm

products to their Lords or went to market themselves which gave rise

to the middle class. 

 

What really disappointed me was the bias this issue of National Geographic

had against Christianity, and for Islam.  In one sentence the author said

the reason for the Crusades was to expand the powers of the pope.  What?

Excuse me, but the pope was responding to urgent appeals from the

Orthodox Church for help from attacks by Muslims, much like millions of

Christians today in the Middle East appealed for help from attacks by ISIS.

(Only Orthodox Russia declared help would come.  The USA uses the

situation for their own selfish ends, much like some of the later crusades.)

 

Or an even better example.  Only one sentence described the rise of

education in Europe.  No quotes by famous historians of how Christianity

was the mother of education and sciences.  The author completely left out

how it was Jesuits who started all the universities; and this very important

piece of history:

 

In 599, Isidore became bishop of Seville and for thirty-seven years led the Spanish church through a period of intense religious development.. Isidore also organized representative councils that established the structure and discipline of the church in Spain. At the Council of Toledo in 633 he obtained a decree that required the establishment of a school in every diocese. Reflecting the saint’s broad interests, the schools taught every branch of knowledge, including the liberal arts, medicine, law, Hebrew, and Greek.

Isidore wrote many books, the most famous being the Etymologies, an encyclopedia of grammar, rhetoric, theology, history, medicine, and mathematics. He also wrote a dictionary of synonyms, brief biographies of illustrious men, treatises on theological and philosophical subjects, a history of world events since the creation, and a history of the Goths, which is our only source of information about them.

 

There seems to be a conspiracy to rewrite history to make the Church seem

like the enemy of knowledge, even destroying the Great Library in Alexandria

which is not true at all.  I copied a portion of this article and pasted it below.

And, as of yet, archaeologists have failed to find the remains of any building sufficiently large to have sheltered a collection on either scale.Whatever the case, as Rohter says, various ancient sources report that the library was destroyed, either in whole or in part, during Julius Caesar’s Alexandrian campaign against Pompey in 48 or 47 b.c.  If any part of it remained in the Brucheium, it would probably have perished when the museum was destroyed in a.d. 272, during Aurelian’s wars of imperial reunification.


It was certainly no longer in existence in 391.Rohter is right that there was perhaps a “daughter” library, which may have been located in the grounds of the Serapeum”the large temple of the Ptolemies’ hybrid Greco-Egyptian god, Serapis “placed there either in the late third century b.c. , or in the late second century a.d. , when the Serapeum was restored and expanded. At least, there is good evidence that scrolls were at certain points kept among the temple complex’s colonnades.


And, in fact, the Serapeum was destroyed in 391. After a series of riots between the pagan and Christian communities of Alexandria ”Alexandria was the most extravagantly violent city of the antique world, and riots were something of a revered civic tradition “a number of Christian hostages had been murdered inside the Serapeum, which led the Emperor Theodosius to order the complex demolished (though he excused the murderers, inasmuch as the Christians they had killed were now considered martyrs, and any act of vengeance would have detracted from their witness).


And so a detachment of Roman soldiers, with the assistance of an eager crowd of Christians, dismantled the complex ”or, at any rate, the temple within it.As it happens, we have fairly good accounts of that day, Christian and pagan, and absolutely none of them so much as hints at the destruction of any large collection of books.


Not even Eunapius of Sardis ”a pagan scholar who despised Christians and who would have wept over the loss of precious texts ”suggests such a thing. This is not surprising, since there were probably no books there to be destroyed.The pagan historian Ammianus Marcellinus, describing the Serapeum not long before its demolition, had clearly spoken of its libraries as something no longer in existence.


The truth of the matter is that the entire legend was the product of the imagination of Edward Gibbon, who bizarrely misread a single sentence from the Christian historian Orosius, and from it spun out a story that appears nowhere in the entire corpus of ancient historical sources.

Tues. 14 April 2026: Joe Rogan sets Bernie Sanders straight on the “climate crisis”. Sanders: “There are some people who think climate change is a hoax. It ain’t a hoax… The last ten years have been the warmest on record.”


Rogan: “The Earth’s temperature has never been static… It’s always been up and down. There’s been ice ages and heat waves… We’re in a cooling period. There’s a lot of money involved in this whole climate change emergency issue, and there’s a lot of control. That’s the problem. The problem is giving people that are in power… more control over citizens. And this is a vehicle for that.”
