REND YOUR HEART – THE PART OF US WE STILL HAVEN’T GIVEN HIM.
“Return to Me with all your heart.” (Joel 2:12)
That may be the most demanding part of Joel's invitation.
Not the fasting, the weeping, or even the mourning.
It is those three little words…ALL YOUR HEART!
Yesterday we talked about REPENTANCE–
the difference between feeling sorry and actually turning.
But once we turn toward YHWH, another question waits for us on the road home:
HOW MUCH OF ME IS ACTUALLY RETURNING?
Because it is entirely possible to turn toward YHWH
while still clutching something behind our back.
“Yet even now,” declares YHWH,
“Return to Me with All your Heart,
with Fasting, with Weeping, and
with Mourning; and
Rend your Hearts and Not your garments.” (Joel 2:12–13)
The biblical idea of the LEV or LEVAV - the Heart - reaches far beyond Emotion.
THE HEART -
Thinks,
Chooses,
Desires, Plans,
Remembers,
Loves, Rebels and
Decides.
IT IS THE INNER PERSON
FROM WHICH THE OUTWARD LIFE EVENTUALLY FLOWS.
So, when YHWH says,
“Return to Me with All your Heart,”
He isn't merely asking Israel to Feel More Deeply about what they have done.
HE IS ASKING FOR THE CENTER OF THE PERSON.
Most of us are willing to give YHWH quite a lot.
We may give Him –
our Sabbath,
our Food,
our Prayers,
our Theology,
our Worship,
our Time and
our Public Convictions.
Perhaps we will even give Him
our Reputation.
And then there is that ONE ROOM at the end of the hallway.
THAT ONE…HAS A LOCK -
Maybe it contains Resentment.
Maybe Ambition.
Maybe a Relationship.
Maybe Money,
Maybe Fear,
Maybe an Addiction nobody knows about,
Maybe Pride,
Maybe Unforgiveness,
OR
Maybe Something we desperately want YHWH to Approve because
Surrendering it would Cost Too Much.
We have given Him the house.
We would simply prefer that He not inspect THAT ROOM…
Unfortunately, “ALL YOUR HEART” INCLUDES THAT KEY.
Israel knew this problem well.
They didn't always Abandon YHWH Completely.
Sometimes they simply tried to Put Something Beside Him.
YHWH and Baal.
YHWH and Asherah.
YHWH and Egypt.
YHWH and the Practices of the Nations.
YHWH as Covenant Elohim –
plus a little Backup Plan in case
Trusting and Obeying Him became Inconvenient.
ELIJAH finally confronted Israel:
“How long will you go limping between Two Different Opinions?
If YHWH is Elohim, follow Him;
But if Baal, then follow him.” (1 Kings 18:21)
CHOOSE!
That's uncomfortable because
Divided Loyalty can look considerably More Respectable
than outright Rebellion.
We can honestly say that we Love YHWH.
Perhaps we really do.
We just also Love Something Else Enough to Disobey Him for it.
And eventually the question becomes very simple:
WHICH ONE GETS THE FINAL WORD?
There is an old hymn many of us have sung more times than we could count:
“I SURRENDER ALL.”
We stand with -
Hands Open,
Hearts Lifted,
Tears in our eyes, and
Sing about Surrendering everything to Yeshua.
It is beautiful.
But there is an uncomfortable question hiding inside that word, “ALL.”
DO WE REALLY MEAN…ALL?
YHWH has already defined what all looks like:
“With ALL your Heart and with All your Nephesh and with All your Might.” (Deuteronomy 6:5)
JOEL says,
“Return to Me with ALL your Heart.” (Joel 2:12)
ALL is a rather inconvenient word.
It leaves remarkably little room for exceptions.
Yet we are very good at quietly Re-defining it.
“I SURRENDER ALL” can sometimes mean:
I surrender everything I am presently Willing to Surrender.
Everything except:
This Relationship.
This Resentment.
This Habit.
This Ambition.
This Money.
This Fear.
This Compromise.
This particular Command I have decided surely doesn't apply to me.
THIS LOCKED ROOM WHOSE KEY I AM STILL HOLDING.
But ninety-nine percent surrender is Not “ALL.”
We cannot Sing the word according to our definition
and expect YHWH to Hear Something Different from the word He used.
Perhaps that is one of the questions worth carrying toward Yom Kippur:
When I tell YHWH,
“I SURRENDER ALL”
is my “all” actually ALL–
or have I quietly redefined what He is Permitted to ask for?
Because Open Hands are easy during a song.
The harder question is what happens when YHWH asks us
TO PUT SOMETHING IN THEM,
LET IT GO…
HOSEA describes Ephraim with a devastating little sentence:
“THEIR HEART IS DIVIDED.” (Hosea 10:2)
A Divided Heart wants incompatible things.
His Blessing without His Authority.
His Protection without His Correction.
His Forgiveness without Surrender.
His Kingdom without His Commandments.
His Presence without Holiness.
But the Shema doesn't say to Love YHWH with the religious portion of our hearts.
“You shall Love YHWH your Elohim
with All your Heart and
with All your Nephesh and
with All your Might.” (Deuteronomy 6:5)
ALL!
We have already met that word on this road home:
NEPHESH:
THE WHOLE LIVING PERSON.
Not some Detachable spiritual piece of us,
But The Self
The life,
The person Standing Before YHWH.
And now JOEL brings us back to the heart, the LEVAV. (Heart)
THE ROAD HOME KEEPS NARROWING THE POSSIBILITY
OF PARTIAL SURRENDER.
ALL YOUR NEPHESH.
ALL YOUR HEART.
YHWH is not asking for the Religious Compartment of us.
HE WANTS THE PERSON.
Covenant Loyalty was never designed as a Timeshare.
THE PROBLEM WAS ALWAYS…THE HEART!
This is also why the idea that Torah was merely about EXTERNAL RULES
Until the New Testament introduced A Religion of the Heart –
simply doesn't survive Torah itself.
MOSES tells Israel,
“Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your Heart,
and Be No Longer Stubborn.” (Deuteronomy 10:16)
Then, when Moses speaks prophetically about Israel's Future Return, he says,
“YHWH your Elohim will Circumcise your Heart and the Teart of your Offspring,
so that you will Love YHWH your Elohim
with ALL your Heart and
with ALL your Nephesh.” (Deut 30:6)
TORAH WAS ALWAYS SUPPOSED TO…REACH INWARD.
YHWH's people were Commanded -
To Love Him,
To Remember His Words,
To Teach them,
To Meditate upon them and
To Walk in them.
THE PROPHETS weren't inventing a New Heart-Centered Religion.
They were Calling Israel Back to what Covenant Faithfulness had always been.
That makes JEREMIAH’S Promise of the New Covenant even more beautiful:
“I WILL PUT MY TORAH…WITHIN THEM, and
I WILL WRITE IT ON THEIR HEARTS.” (Jer 31:33)
Notice what YHWH doesn't say.
He doesn't say The Heart Matters now, so His Instructions no longer do.
He says HE WILL WRITE HIS TORAH THERE.
The problem was never YHWH's Ways.
THE PROBLEM WAS THE HUMAN HEART…RESISTING THEM.
EZEKIEL describes the same miracle:
“I will Give you A New Heart,
and A New Spirit I will Put Within You.”
Then YHWH explains what that Transformation produces:
“I will put My Spirit within you,
I will cause you to walk in My Statutes and
Be Careful to Obey My Rules.” (Ezekiel 36:26–27)
There is our Ruach again.
NEW HEART.
RUACH WITHIN.
CHANGED WALK.
Not Freedom from YHWH's Ways,
BUT A HEART TRANSFORMED SO THAT IT DESIRES TO WALK IN THEM.
There is, however, a problem.
Jeremiah tells us,
“The Heart is Deceitful above all things.” (Jeremiah 17:9)
Our Hearts are astonishingly good at Defending the rooms
we don't want YHWH Entering.
It is an excellent lawyer.
I deserve this.
My situation is different.
Everybody does it.
That command doesn't apply here.
YHWH understands.
I prayed about it.
I have peace about it.
They hurt me first.
This is just how I am.
Sometimes we don't need another Bible Study to discover what YHWH wants.
We already know.
We are simply Hoping for A Second Opinion.
And if we search long enough, the internet will almost certainly provide one.
Sometimes the Greatest Obstacle to Surrender isn't Ignorance of YHWH's Word.
Our Greatest Obstacle to Surrender is our remarkable ability to explain
why our particular situation should be Exempt from it.
HEBREWS describes the Word of Elohim as
“Living and active,
Sharper than any two-edged sword,”
Discerning “the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
That's considerably less decorative than the verse sometimes looks printed
above a Bible-study desk.
The WOR CUTS!
Sometimes we open Scripture looking for Encouragement and Discover Surgery.
We wanted something pleasant for the morning,
YHWH FOUND THE LOCKED ROOM…
AND THAT IS…MERCY TOO.
A Physician who sees something deadly inside us and refuses to tell us isn't kind.
The Word Cuts because YHWH Intends to Heal.
YHWH is truly our Heart Surgeon.
Our instinct when Conviction comes is often –
To sew the wound shut as quickly as possible.
Explain it.
Rationalize it.
Distract ourselves.
Find someone who agrees with us.
Search until we find an interpretation that makes the discomfort disappear.
But JOEL says,
“REND YOUR HEART.”
Maybe there are moments when we should Leave it Open Long Enough
for YHWH to Show us what is actually there.
A torn garment could be sewn back together
while the person underneath remained exactly the same.
A Heart Opened Before YHWH is different.
Rending the heart means -
ALLOWING HIM ACCESS TO WHAT WE HAVE PROTECTED -
Resentment,
Pride,
Secret Compromise,
Fear,
Relationship,
Idol,Excuse,
Wound,
Ambition, or
Command we have spent years explaining away.
Not because YHWH doesn't already Know it is there.
He does.
WE ARE THE ONES WHO NEED TO STOP HIDING IT.
And perhaps that's why Surrender can feel so Frightening.
Once the Heart is Open,
We No Longer Control what YHWH is Permitted to Touch.
But we need to understand what BIBLICIAL BROKENNESS means.
YHWH is Not asking us to Hate ourselves or Destroy ourselves.
DAVID says,
“A Broken and Contrite heart, O Elohim, You will not despise.”
Yet in the very same psalm he asks,
“Create in me a Clean Heart, O Elohim.” (Psalm 51:10, 17)
THE BREAKING HAS A PURPOSE.
Break what is Hard.
Clean what is Polluted.
Straighten what has Become Crooked.
Restore what has been Damaged.
Renew what has become Stubborn.
This isn't Destruction.
IT’S SURGERY.
And look again at why Joel says –
WE CAN RISK OPENING THE HEART:
“Return to YHWH your Elohim,
for He is Gracious and Merciful,
Slow to Anger, and
Abounding in Steadfast Love.” (Joel 2:13)
That's the Safety Inside the command.
THE ONE ASKING FOR THE KEY…
IS THE ONE WHO INTENDS TO HEAL…
WHAT HE FINDS BEHIND THE DOOR.
We are moving toward -
YOM KIPPUR –
Atonement,
Cleansing,
Blood,
The Sanctuary and
The High Priest.
But before we get there, YHWH keeps taking us deeper.
RETURN…
Actually TURN...
Now Give Me your Heart...
Surrender all.
Not the Sabbath Portion.
Not the Theological Portion.
Not the Public Portion everyone else sees.
Not even the Obedient Portions we are quite pleased to hand Him.
…ALL OF IT!
So perhaps today's question isn't, “
What Religious Thing should I Do?”
It is much more personal:
What am I Still Protecting from YHWH?
What Subject do I hope He won't bring up?
What Bitterness have I Justified?
What Habit have I declared untouchable?
What Command do I know but resist?
What Relationship do I Refuse to Surrender?
What Idol have I Hidden behind respectable language?
Where is the Locked Room?
JOEL’S Invitation is still standing:
“Return to Me with ALL your Heart.”
Open the Door.
Let the Word Cut.
Let the Ruach Expose what has been Hidden.
Let the Shepherd Correct what has Wandered.
Let the Father Heal what has been Wounded.
The Road Home is Open,
But YHWH isn't asking for the Carefully Selected Pieces of us
that we are Comfortable bringing with us.
HE WANTS THE HEART…
ALL OF IT!
And if something must Tear –
Let it be the Thing YHWH can Heal.
I have had to answer this too...
I don't write any of this from the comfortable side of Surrender.
I have had to answer this question too.
When I ask whether our “all” really means all,
I know what it is to discover that YHWH is reaching toward something
I Desperately Do Not Want Touched.
Some of my Surrender has involved Very Deep Wounds.
Some has meant placing things into His hands
that I would have given almost anything to keep.
There have been times when Surrender did not feel
Beautiful or
Peaceful or
Particularly Spiritual.
It felt like Devastating Loss.
And yet, after everything, I still Believe Him.
Job said,
“Though He Slay me,
I will Hope in Him.” (Job 13:15)
That is a Frightening kind of Surrender.
It doesn't say,
“I will Trust You as long as I Understand what You are doing.”
It says,
“I WILL TRUST YOUR CHARACTER
WHEN I CANNOT UNDERSTAND YOUR HAND.
I have also learned that Romans 8:28 does not say
everything that happens to those who Love YHWH is Good.
Some things are Heartbreaking.
Some things Leave Scars.
Some things I will Never Call Good, because they weren't.
The Promise is that YHWH works in ALL Things for Good
for those who Love Him and are Called according to His Purpose.
He can take –
What Wounded us,
What was taken from us,
What others did to us,
What we did to ourselves, and even
What He asks us to Surrender, and
Refuse to let any of it be Wasted.
Maybe that is why the imagery in Hebrew Hahas' song
“Broken Ground” hits me so deeply.
Freshly Plowed Ground doesn't look Peaceful.
It has been Cut Open and Turned Over.

Trump RIPS INTO Supreme Court over ruling on midterm elections

1. EU opens the door to an unprecedented Canada “associate membership”
Facts: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen endorsed creating an unprecedented form of EU associate membership for Canada during her September 16 address to the European Parliament.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, attending the address, has insisted that Canada is not seeking full EU membership. His proposed “unique alliance” could cover trade, energy, critical minerals, defence procurement, technology and digital security. Canada recently joined an important EU defence-purchasing program. Unconfirmed: “Associate membership” does not presently exist as a defined EU legal category. There is no negotiated text explaining obligations, freedom-of-movement provisions, regulatory alignment or dispute resolution.
Why it matters to Dan: This is now more than an unnamed-source trial balloon: the EU’s senior executive has endorsed the concept publicly. Greater access to European markets could help Ontario manufacturing, energy and technology firms reduce dependence on the United States.
The fine print will matter enormously. Cooperation is welcome; transferring Canadian regulatory authority or immigration policy through a pleasantly vague “association” would require explicit parliamentary debate—not a surprise tucked inside the diplomatic carry-on.
2. Carney offers a major investment deduction and considers private airport management
Facts: Carney announced on September 15 that Ottawa will expand its “productivity mega deduction,” which the government says will reduce Canada’s effective tax rate on new business investment to approximately 6.4%. AI can create genuine workplace value, including in media production and asset management. That does not mean your neighbour should subsidize a speculative server farm through his hydro bill.
