Hope, Headlines, and the Hand of God

This past week in Israel has carried a powerful mix of emotions - joy, anticipation, tension, relief, and still unresolved sorrow. On Monday, just as President Trump’s Air Force One was making it’s way into Israeli airspace, the remaining twenty living Israeli hostages were finally released and returned to their family’s loving arms. The scenes of reunions were powerful - tears, embraces, laughter and the kind of raw emotion that only comes when hope survives the darkest hours. Yet in the relief felt on a national level, something remains unfinished. 19 bodies of slain hostages are still in Gaza. Families are still waiting - not for a joyful reunion, but for the closure of burial, knowing their loved ones have come to their final resting place on Israeli soil.
Hand in hand with the intense hours of Monday morning came President Trump’s visit to Israel and his address to the Knesset. The speech was historic in tone and ambition, clearly paving the way for the summit with the rulers of the Arab Muslim world in Egypt that occurred just a few hours later. Regional peace was the focal point of the speech as Trump declared: “And after so many years of unceasing war and endless danger, today the skies are calm, the guns are silent, the sirens are still, and the sun rises on a holy land that is finally at peace, a land and a region that will live, God willing, in peace for all eternity.”
The word “peace” was mentioned dozens of times throughout. Many around the world heard this and felt a surge of optimism with commentators calling it the start of a new era in the Middle East - an opportunity to pursue regional peace with fresh momentum. The Abraham Accords version 2.0, that will supposedly secure Israel’s peace for generations to come with the billions of Muslim neighbors that engulf her, thus ending a three millennia old feud.

I’d love to join the optimism wholeheartedly, but as believers, we do not view world events only through a geo-political lens. We must view them through the lens of Scripture.
The apostle Paul gave us a warning for the end times that sounds all the louder in moments like this: “For when they say, ‘Peace and safety!’ then sudden destruction comes upon them…” (1 Thessalonians 5:3). That does not mean every peace effort is illegitimate or a doomed failure - but it does mean we should not be naïve. The Bible does not tell us to ignore history or applaud every declaration - it tells us to be watchful and discern the times.
Daniel 9:27 speaks of a time when a covenant will be made with many. For generations, students of scripture have connected this to a future multinational peace accord involving Israel. Are we watching the early stages of something like that? Could global figures be unknowingly walking out steps written long ago in biblical prophecy? Maybe. We cannot state it as fact - but we also should not shrug it off as imagination and jump blindfolded on the regional peace wagon.
The world talks about a new era. But the reality on the ground is that Hamas is still alive and shooting (mainly the people of Gaza as of now), and two generations have graduated Hamas’ evil school of cultural Jihad that calls to destroy Israel at all costs, or to die trying. Deep indoctrination like Hamas and the PLO have drilled into all born in Gaza or Judea and Samaria since the late 80’s is not easily or quickly undone.
Scripture reminds us that lasting peace - real, righteous, enduring peace - will not come through policy, personality, or political agreements. It will come when Yeshua, the Prince of Peace, returns and reigns from Jerusalem. Until then, there will be hopeful moments, painful reminders, and prophetic signals unfolding - often all at the same time, and we must not be blinded by the shining lights. Not all that glitters is gold – even fools know that.
So, what do we do?
We do not get carried away by every declaration of “peace and security”
We stay awake and alert. We celebrate what is good in its time – the return of the hostages and interim times of peace, but we do not pretend the rest has been resolved indefinitely. We do not get carried away by every declaration of “peace and security”, but prayerful consider and observe the monumental events taking place through a biblical lens. We pay attention not to the promises of politicians, but to the patterns of prophecy, knowing that God is shaping the world up by his sovereign hand and according to his word.
And above all, we anchor our hope not in headlines or speeches, but in the One who has already told us how the story ends. We place our hope in the Prince of Peace and the time when the words of Isaiah will be truly fulfilled: “He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” (Isaiah 2:4).

Israeli Hostages Released
Israel experienced great relief and joy Monday morning as Hamas released the last 20 living hostages under the US-brokered Gaza ceasefire, with President Trump flying in to mark the moment.
The hostages, held in tunnels and horrific conditions, were handed over in two groups via the Red Cross and reunited with their families at the Re’im military base. Pale, thin, but alive, they were then flown to hospitals for initial tests and treatment.
Massive crowds in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem cheered their return, waving flags and singing. Former hostage Ohad Ben Ami sent an emotional message to those freed, calling them heroes.
But the deal wasn’t fully honored on Monday as Hamas has yet to return the bodies of 19 slain hostages, despite being obligated to under the agreement. Families and officials are furious, calling it a clear breach of the agreement and calling the Government to return to combat until the remaining hostages are returned.
Hamas Returns Two Hostage Bodies, 19 Still Unaccounted For
Hamas handed over the bodies of two Israeli hostages - Inbar Haiman and Sgt. Maj. Muhammad el-Atrash - on Wednesday night.
The Red Cross transferred the caskets to the IDF, where they were identified and honored before being taken for forensic review. Haiman, 27, was murdered and abducted from the Nova festival on October 7 and was the last female hostage in Gaza. El-Atrash, 39, a Muslim Bedouin trekker in the IDF and a father of 13, was killed fighting Hamas that same day.
Hamas claims it has returned all the bodies it could find, but 19 hostages’ remains are still missing. Israel says it expects full compliance with the truce, and Defense Minister Israel Katz has threatened renewed military action if Hamas stalls. The U.S. says recovering all the bodies will take time due to rubble, tunnels and war damage.
Trump Finalizes Deal with Arab Muslim Nations - Israel Absent
At a peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, President Trump joined leaders from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey in signing a document supporting new arrangements for Gaza’s future. Representatives from 31 countries and organizations attended, though Israeli representation was entirely absent.
President Trump said the agreement lays out rules for Gaza’s reconstruction and stressed that Hamas must be disarmed for rebuilding to move forward. He credited Arab and Islamic countries for helping end the war and secure the release of hostages.
The signed text calls for mutual respect, regional cooperation, and long-term stability, echoing the goals of the Abraham Accords.
It welcomes improving ties between Israel and neighboring states and commits participants to pursuing shared prosperity.
