California Rep. Kevin Kiley registers as Independent, narrowing House GOP's already fragile majority

Rep. Kevin Kiley of California walked away from the Republican Party on Friday, registering as an Independent and handing Democrats a talking point they will carry into every close House vote for the foreseeable future. He says he will continue caucusing with Republicans for administrative purposes. But the Republican conference now sits at 217 seats, with 214 Democrats and one Independent on the floor, and the margin for error is essentially gone.

Kiley did not notify Speaker Mike Johnson before going public. The two spoke over the weekend after the announcement had already landed.


The stated reason

According to the New York Post, Kiley framed his departure around California's redistricting process, filing to run in the newly redrawn 6th Congressional District rather than his current 3rd. His argument is that gerrymandering forces partisanship, and the best counter is to shed the party label entirely.

Since gerrymandering seeks to elevate partisanship above everything else in our politics … the best way to counter gerrymandering and its insidious impacts on democracy is simply to take partisanship out of the equation.

It is a plausible political calculation for a California Republican facing a reconfigured map and challengers including Democrat Richard Pan and candidate Thien Ho. Whether it is principled or strategic, or both, is a question Kiley leaves unanswered.


A pattern of friction

The party switch did not come from nowhere. Kiley had already been pulling against Republican leadership on multiple fronts. Last fall, he publicly criticized GOP leadership for keeping the House out of session during a 43-day government shutdown. He also pushed Republicans to explore an Obamacare deal with Democrats as a path to ending it. Last month, he joined Reps. Don Bacon and Thomas Massie in helping defeat a House measure designed to prevent lawmakers from introducing resolutions to undermine President Trump's tariffs.

When asked whether Speaker Johnson would describe him as a reliable member of the conference, Kiley did not exactly project confidence: "I don't know if he would tell you I have been so far."

That is not a man surprised by his own departure. It reads more like someone who had been building toward this for a while.


The math is unforgiving

Republicans can absorb almost nothing right now. The majority was already threadbare before Kiley moved. Rep. Doug LaMalfa's death, Marjorie Taylor Greene's retirement, Rep. Jim Baird sidelined after a car accident in January that killed his wife, and Rep. Tony Gonzales declining to seek reelection after surviving his primary have all chipped at the conference's working strength. Every absence, every defection, every procedural miscalculation carries real consequences.

The last Independent to serve in the House before Kiley was in 2019. He is now the only one on the floor.


For Johnson, managing a conference where a member can announce a party switch without so much as a courtesy call is a leadership problem as much as a numbers problem. A majority that requires unanimous cooperation to function cannot afford members who operate outside the tent while claiming a seat at the table. Kiley says he will caucus with Republicans. That pledge is worth exactly as much as his next vote.


What this means going forward

Kiley's move does not flip any committees today or hand Democrats the Speaker's gavel tomorrow. But it does something subtler and more corrosive: it signals to other members that the personal political exit is available. California redistricting gave him a convenient rationale. The next member with a swing district and a difficult map may not need much more than that example.


Republicans in the House are governing with essentially no margin. Every bill, every procedural vote, every rule requiring a simple majority is a live wire. One member in open friction with leadership is already a problem. One member who has formally left the party and is running in a competitive California district has every incentive to position himself for a general election audience, not a Republican primary one.

The conference will hold together or it won't. Kiley just made that question considerably more interesting to answer.

Sickening news is revealed... New Zealand fully vaccinated children against expert advice

Sickening news out of New Zealand as it is revealed, via their Royal Commission on COVID-19, that official and expert “advice cautioning the Government against mandating two doses of the Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine for under-18s was never shown to ministers”. The advice came from “a technical advisory group made up of experts” who were concerned about the fact that younger people were “more at risk of developing myocarditis after the second dose of Pfizer vaccine and less at risk of serious infection from Covid-19”.


The “inquiry found that ministers they interviewed could not recall receiving the advice, and both doses were mandated as a result”. The “Royal Commission is considering it a failure that the advice did not reach ministers or the public, noting 12 to 17-year-olds were not informed of the risks when making the decision to get vaccinated”. A “Ministry of Health spokesperson acknowledged the commission’s finding that it was a significant failing”. Source. That’s nice, but I think we want a little bit more than mere acknowledgements of failings.


Recall that we were continuously ordered to trust the science, to trust the experts, to trust the government. Apparently our leaders are exempt. Recall also that then Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinta Ardern declared: “We will continue to be your single source of truth.” And also: “When you see those messages, remember that unless you hear it from us, it is not the truth.” Source.

Extra: 

In the USA, this brings to mind similar developments in other countries. In the US, experts and leaders like Saint Pfauci (JBUH) and President Biden straight up lied about the jabs preventing infection/transmission, the CDC quietly scrubbed their site of their clear misinformation around the fate of the jab/its products once injected, and the government eventually admitted to a bunch of ‘failings’ around COVID-19. And two FDA officials quit in frustration after Biden was rushing out the booster before the FDA completed their review. Source.


In the UK, leaked messages from the then health secretary had disturbing bits about releasing the new variant and manipulating the people through fear, and it was eventually discovered that the government hid COVID-19 vaccine death data. 

In Australia, health authorities pretty much admitted that the risks of the jabs outweigh the benefits in healthy children, which they should have known from data they already had around the time they recommended vaccination.
