What will happen in Birmingham tonight? [Thursday]
I've just arrived in Birmingham. Walking past the centuries-old churchyards and cobblestone streets, you can feel the deep history of this city.
But after years of mass migration, its character has changed dramatically. The city, the second largest in the UK, now has a significant Muslim population, and you can see it in the political messaging around town — some signs even urging residents to "Give Gaza Your Vote."
That's the backdrop for tonight's football (soccer) match. Aston Villa, one of Birmingham's oldest teams, is playing an Israeli team, Maccabi Tel Aviv. But authorities have banned Israeli and Jewish fans, claiming they're a "danger" after threats from radical Muslim activists.
Despite the ban, thousands of Muslim protesters are expected, and the police have deployed 1,000 officers to maintain order.
I won't be attending the match myself, but I'll be reporting from the streets as events unfold.
And just in case things get violent, I'll be wearing a stab-proof vest. Hopefully I won't need it.
This was once a peaceful Christian city. Now, it's on edge over the mere presence of a Jewish team.

Tension escalates at Edgewood Farm as police bar entry and emotional scenes unfold.
In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing battle over Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, British Columbia, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is blocking the farm's entrance, refusing to allow supporters to enter the property.

The move comes as the farm's owners were awaiting a Supreme Court decision on their appeal against the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), which has seized the site since 22 September and demands the mass cull of hundreds of healthy ostriches over disputed bird flu concerns.

Cloned Meat Closer to Being Sold in Canada Without Labels or Oversight

Cloned meat could be coming to a grocery store near you. Whether you’re receptive to the technology or not, you may be none the wiser from looking at the package. Health Canada has made moves to lift restrictions on meat from cloned cattle and pigs, no longer considering it a “ novel food,” meaning it could be commercialized without notification or labelling.
Novel foods are “products that are new or changed compared to existing foods,” such as the first Health Canada-approved genetically modified animal (and now defunct ), AquAdvantage salmon, which hit the shelves in the late 2010s — with no special labelling required.
Health Canada assesses the safety of all novel foods before they can be brought to market. Based on the scientific opinions published by international bodies, including the European Food Safety Authority and Japan Food Safety Commission, the department concluded “that foods derived from healthy cattle and swine clones and their offspring are as safe as foods from traditionally bred animals.”

According to Health Canada’s policy update, the department’s Food Directorate decided that there should be no difference between the regulation of cloned and conventional meat products. Foods derived from clones of other animals, such as goat and sheep, however, are still considered novel foods.
As The Winnipeg Sun reports, Health Canada’s 2024 consultation on foods derived from cloned cattle and swine involved feedback from scientists, food policy organizations and agricultural representatives. “Fewer than 1,200 individuals and organizations were directly notified, and the results were not widely publicized.”
According to Sylvain Charlebois, director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University, “The problem isn’t the science — it’s the silence.”
Charlebois wrote in the Agri-Food Analytics Lab newsletter, “Canadians are not being told that the rules governing a deeply controversial technology are about to change. No press release, no public statement, just a quiet update on a government website most citizens will never read.”
Since the days of Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned using an adult cell, in 1996, the technology has been highly contentious. There are ethical issues, including animal welfare, and, similar to cultured meat, there’s an ick factor to food from cloned animals.
The United States Food and Drug Administration determined that meat from cloned cows, goats and pigs is safe to eat in January 2008. Three years later, a study published in Appetite found that consumers considered farm animal cloning “unnatural” and were concerned that it would pave the way to human cloning.
Charlebois underscores that a lack of transparency could hurt the industry’s image. Without clear labelling, some people could stop buying meat altogether or shop only at places where they can be assured of its origins. “Transparency, I think, is key, and it’s often underappreciated,” Charlebois said on The Food Professor podcast.
While controversial among consumers, cloning is attractive to some farmers and ranchers because it enables them to breed beneficial traits into their herds more quickly. The industry may experience increased productivity and quality, as well as reduced production costs, but technological advances don’t always translate to lower prices at checkouts.
“If you start labelling, you completely change the rules, because if, all of a sudden, you have, you know, cloned meat at $10 and regular meat at $10, most people will take the regular meat. But if your cloned meat, because it costs less, is $7 or $6, I bet that a lot of people would consider it,” Charlebois added, concluding, “Let the people decide.”

Fears are rising in New England—and rightly so—as Maine officials confirm three active tuberculosis cases in the Greater Portland area with no known connection between the patients.
That means separate sources of exposure and separate chains of transmission. While bureaucrats rush to calm nerves, this is yet another flashing red light about what happens when public health takes a back seat to open-borders ideology and feel-good politics. Under President Donald Trump, the priority was simple: protect Americans first, enforce the law, and keep dangerous diseases from gaining a foothold. Today, the ruling class tells you to look the other way and trust the same systems that keep failing.
Here are the facts officials can’t spin: all three patients tested positive for active TB and are being managed while public health teams scramble to identify and isolate close contacts. Authorities say the cases are confined to the Greater Portland area, but the lack of any link between the patients is the canary in the coal mine—different carriers, different vectors, more uncertainty.
According to the Daily Mail, these three new confirmed cases come as the United States is reporting 10,347 infections of the illness in 2024. This represents an increase of eight percent from the previous year and is the highest total recorded since 2011, which had a total of 10,471. That’s not a minor bump; it’s a wake-up call.
To their credit, state officials say they’re moving quickly, and the report also contains some good news, as officials state that the risk to the public from the latest infections is low. Most cases in the country are imported from other parts of the world through migration, according to data from the CDC, with the vast majority of patients entering from outside U.S. borders. Maine’s CDC officially revealed the news of the infections on Tuesday, telling residents to be on the lookout for symptoms of tuberculosis, such as a persistent cough that does not ease up within three weeks’ time. That’s basic, commonsense guidance—exactly the kind of vigilance communities need when facing a disease that can lurk for weeks before being recognized.
Dr. Dora Anne Mills, the chief health improvement officer for Maine Health, informed the public that it can only be passed if someone is in “close, prolonged contact” with an infected individual. She then said, “The vast majority of people do not need to worry about this.” No panic, but no complacency either.
Here’s the broader point the media won’t say out loud: when Washington abandons border integrity and waves through record numbers without robust health screening, the risks don’t land on Georgetown cocktail parties—they land on working-class neighbourhoods, schools, shelters, and hospitals already stretched thin. President Trump was mocked for prioritizing border controls and stronger screening. The numbers now speak for themselves. You can either enforce the law and protect the public, or you can pretend ideology is a substitute for epidemiology.
Maine’s current flare-up should prompt real action: tighter screening where it matters, support for clinicians and contact tracers on the ground, and the political will to say no to policies that import risk and export costs onto American families. TB is beatable—we’ve proved it for decades—but only if leaders stop treating border security and public health as optional. The public deserves the truth, the tools to stay safe, and a federal government that finally puts Americans first again.

A new report has identified one of the main groups behind the anti-ICE demonstrations in Los Angeles on Sunday, which resulted in widespread harassment of ICE agents.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who opposed Trump’s immigration policies during her unsuccessful 2020 campaign, once again finds herself on the opposite side of the issue as riots aimed at obstructing immigration enforcement spiraled out of control over the weekend.
Harris issued a statement condemning Trump’s deployment of the California National Guard to restore order after Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democratic Mayor Karen Bass declined to intervene, despite federal agents being attacked.
“Los Angeles is my home. And like so many Americans, I am appalled at what we are witnessing on the streets of our city,” Harris began. “Deploying the National Guard is a dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos.
“In addition to the recent ICE raids in Southern California and across our nation, it is part of the Trump Administration’s cruel, calculated agenda to spread panic and division,” she said, adding that the protests were “mostly peaceful” despite significant damage to ICE and Border Patrol vehicles, injuries to ICE personnel, and widespread arson and looting in downtown L.A.
“This Administration’s actions are not about public safety — they’re about stoking fear,” she went on to falsely claim.
Trump’s move came after he federalized nearly 2,000 California National Guard troops, while Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth placed an additional 500 U.S. Marines at Camp Pendleton on standby.
More protests are expected in California on Monday and potentially throughout the week.

After sending a threatening, unhinged voicemail in July to Senator Tim Sheehy of the Republican Party (MT), a Democratic Party legislator suffered a devastating electoral defeat.
Haley McKnight is a candidate running for the position of city commissioner of Helena, Montana’s capital. She sent the voicemail shortly after Sheehy, along with the vast majority of Republican members, had advanced the “Big Beautiful Bill”, a spending package backed by Trump that included many of the most important promises made during the presidential campaign.

McKnight directed her anger towards Sheehy and his family in the voicemail sent July 1. She then warned the Senator “not to see me on the street.”
McKnight suffered a range of consequences as a result of the voicemail, including a loss in elections and professional problems.
McKnight went on to say, “I wish you would die like a street dog.” One day, you will regret it. Your children will never forgive you, I pray. I wish you were infertile. I wish you never to get another boner. God forbid you meet me in the street, because you will regret it. F*** you. I hope you die.”
McKnight is originally from North Carolina and works for a small company called Sage & Oats Trading Post. She describes it as “a Native American-owned gift shop” on the campaign’s website. Fox News reports that she also owns a design and consulting business, Morningstar Design Ltd Co. She is president of Helena Young Professionals and serves on its board.
Federal Election Commission Records show she donated in the past to several Democratic Party candidates. She praised her work in support of former President Barack Obama and her previous campaign for former Montana congressman Steve Held.
McKnight, when asked to comment on the matter, said: “I am a constituent and was reacting with some justifiable rage” If Sheehy had been so upset by my voicemail I would have expected him to contact me rather than leak my information the night before a presidential election. This feels cheap. “I’m his constituent, and I know that this is not something I would say in front of my grandmother, or any of the children. It was intended for Senator Sheehy only.”

She continued to say that the backlash she received for her remarks was “laughable”, and it should be treated like general feedback. McKnight continued, “I would also have assumed that someone from the military could handle some harsh language.” Sheehy, a retired Navy SEAL wounded in Afghanistan.
McKnight’s remarks proved to be disastrous for her in the race of Helena’s city commissioners, which is traditionally nonpartisan. She finished in third with only 20 percent. McKnight was therefore ruled out of consideration for the two open seats.
In a separate statement, the owners of Sage & Oats Trading Post announced McKnight’s dismissal to Montana Free Press. The owners told Montana Free Press that an impending story was announced just one hour prior to its release. They also said that McKnight’s remarks were out of character for the 30-year-old candidate.
Owners said they strongly disagreed with the “threatening words” used by McKnight in her voicemail, but that it was a difficult decision to dismiss her. The owners cited the important role McKnight played in the growth of the company since its opening in 2018. They also said that they now viewed her as family.

Russia has already encircled these forces. If the Russians are able to capture (or kill) active-duty NATO member country troops, taking up arms on the battlefield, this will be the definitive proof Russia needs to show the world that the U.S. and NATO themselves are, in fact, "at war" with Russia.
Capturing or killing such active-duty forces would be a Casus Beli for Russia - cause for war - with the US and NATO.
So desperate is NATO to evacuate these troops, they sent two Blackhawk Helicopters - previously gifted to Ukraine - to try to hot-extract the troops from an active combat zone. Both helicopters landed and were destroyed y the Russians. The extraction didn't take place.
Now, the race is on to see if NATO can get its troops out before Russia captures or kills them, thereby making the Ukraine war an actual war with NATO.
The West is, as you might guess, desperate to avoid BEING CAUGHT in direct war with Russia.
Igor Kimakovsky, adviser to the head of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), said that the Ukrainian special services tried several times to evacuate a group of foreigners from the Krasnoarmeysk region by helicopter.
The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that assault groups of the 2nd Army entered and entrenched themselves in the residential area of the Prigorodny micro district in Krasnoarmeysk."
In late October and early November 2025, a Russian military transport plane landed in Caracas, which is seen as a strategic move to support the Maduro government amid tensions with the US.
One Russian official recently threatened to supply nuclear missiles to Venezuela and Cuba, though this appears to be a statement aimed at threatening the United States rather than a confirmed action.
In June 2024, a Russian naval fleet, including a nuclear-powered submarine, visited Cuba, but Cuban and US officials stated it was a routine visit and not carrying nuclear weapons.
Russia has previously sent nuclear-capable strategic bombers (Tu-160s, which can carry conventional or nuclear-tipped missiles) to Venezuela for temporary joint military exercises in 2008, 2013, and 2018. These were temporary deployments, and it was not confirmed if they carried nuclear weapons at the time.

In case you still doubt Ukraine’s neo-Nazi problem
When Third Reich imagery is prominent in the social media of the country’s leader, you would think somebody would notice

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s recent tour of several units fighting in the Donbass featured a flurry of Nazi and Nazi-adjacent symbolism, worn on the flags and shoulder patches of Ukrainian servicemen. None of it, of course, was picked up by Western media.
First off, we have the infamous Wolfsangel – a medieval Germanic symbol, widely adopted by Nazi Germany during the Second World War and used by multiple Nazi-linked groups then and since – including Ukraine’s now-defunct Azov Brigade and its still-intact successors, the 1st Azov Corps.
Their own explanation is that it’s not a Wolfsangel at all, but merely a monogram of their slogan, the words “National Idea.”
In that same X thread by Zelensky, seen in that same line of banners, are several red-and-black nationalist flags – clearly reminiscent of the OUN (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists) and its military wing, the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army), widely recognized as WW2-era Nazi collaborators. These days, Ukrainian nationalists are trying to rebrand them for the wider audience as unofficial symbols of the “struggle” against Russia.
And to top it all off, we see Zelensky shaking hands with, and handing awards to, servicemen with shoulder patches featuring the good old Schutzstaffel (SS) twin lightning bolts (or Sig-runes, as they are also known).
Again, there is an explanation – apparently, these are not the letter S at all, they are the number 4, standing for the 4th battalion of the 4th National Guard Operational Brigade ‘Rubezh’. Or maybe they are SS, but they simply stand for the battalion’s nickname, transliterated into English – ‘Sila Svobody’ (The Power of Freedom).
At any rate, the twin bolts are not part of the unit’s official imagery, so they might simply be the individual stylistic choice of a couple of guardsmen. Distasteful, yes, but surely not a systemic problem, right?
It becomes a problem when we see the country’s leader personally shaking hands with people wearing such symbols, and then proudly displaying the ceremony on his official social media feed for all his Western supporters, as well of the rest of the world, to see. The same leader who’s been in power for a year and a half past his presidential term, citing martial law. The same leader who has been demanding cash, weapons and soldiers from the EU and the US, as well as EU and NATO membership for his country. The same leader Western leaders tend to receive with open arms and hail as a fighter for democracy and freedom.
Western officials, as well as the media most of the time, just look the other way when confronted with the blatant Nazi imagery on display in the Ukrainian army. That is, when they are not actively trying to cover up for the Nazis, the way the CBC tried (and failed) in its report on “an elite training facility” in Kiev. Or aiding and abetting the Nazis by sending them weapons, like the US did when it lifted restrictions on Azov back during the Biden administration.
The explanations for why Nazi symbols are so prominent in the Ukrainian army are paper-thin. Sure, it’s the ‘National Idea’ monogram and a 44, not an SS – but if you don’t want to be associated with Nazis, why would you stylize your heraldry to look exactly like theirs? And sure, red and black are just colours, plenty of flags around the world feature them – by try telling that to those in Poland not brainwashed enough to forget the history of the Volyn massacre perpetrated by Ukrainian Nazi collaborators.
Perhaps these explanations work to skirt Ukraine’s own laws, which ban Nazi imagery along with communist symbols, but it seems much more likely that the state, built as it is on the support of ultra-nationalists during and after the 2014 Maidan coup, just isn’t interested in enforcing those laws.
In case you think Russia is overreacting when it calls the Ukrainians out on the issue, consider that the Wolfsangel, along with other Nazi imagery, is banned in Germany (they even have to be censored out of video games published in the country) and listed as a hate symbol by multiple American NGOs, for instance. These high moral standards don’t seem to apply to Ukrainian soldiers when you need someone to fight your war with Russia for you.
Symbols evolve, becoming attached to ideologies and detached from them over time, and even the swastika was not always the damnable Nazi brand it is now. That is not the case here, however. What we are dealing with is an attempt to revive, at a national level, an ideology through symbolism – and an ideology that was rightfully buried with the end of WWII. There are those who fight against that ideology and call it out for what it is. And then there are those who help sustain it by turning a blind eye.

What U.S. Forces Face as Venezuela Puts Russian-Armed Military on Wartime Alert

The 10,000 U.S. troops now operating in the Caribbean were sent to interdict drug boats. But Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's Sept. 30 state of external emergency fundamentally changed what they're facing: a military on full wartime alert, equipped with Russian air defences and anti-ship missiles, backed by what Maduro claims is a militia of over 8 million members.
For American commanders, that means every operation and incident now happens under the threat of Venezuelan retaliation — a situation the current force is not ready to handle.
Russian Missiles and Air Defence Systems Pose Threat to U.S. Navy
Venezuela can't match U.S. firepower in a conventional fight. Its 123,000-member armed forces are allegedly plagued by maintenance problems, with analysts telling The Wall Street Journal the military is “in shambles.” Their submarines and surface vessels are probably inoperable, according to experts quoted by Breaking Defence.
But Venezuela has spent billions on the weapons that could cause the most damage: Russian-built systems such as missiles and jets designed to interdict U.S. ships and aircraft.
The country operates at least 20 Sukhoi Su-30 MK2 fighters armed with Kh-31 "Krypton" anti-ship missiles. The International Institute for Strategic Studies confirmed Venezuela has both anti-ship and anti-radar versions of the Kh-31 system. These are the same missiles that forced U.S. Navy planners back in the 90s to develop countermeasures because of their speed and sea-skimming flight profile.
Venezuelan jets have already tested U.S. forces. In early September, two Venezuelan F-16s conducted close passes of the USS Jason Dunham in international waters. Defence officials described the maneuver as “highly provocative” and a “show of force.” The Pentagon warned Venezuela against further interference with counternarcotics operations.
On the ground, Venezuela has positioned several S-125 Pechora-2M, Buk-M2E and thousands of Igla-S surface-to-air missile systems near oil facilities, radar sites and naval approaches. These systems, while aging, remain capable of threatening any helicopters and lower-flying aircraft that U.S. forces would need for any operations beyond long-range strikes.
Perhaps most significantly, Venezuela has deployed both Russian radar arrays and Chinese communication relays, creating what military planners call a contested electromagnetic spectrum, according to Army Recognition. That means U.S. aircraft and ships can't assume they'll operate undetected or that their communications won't be jammed.

Venezuela Activates Millions in Militia for Territorial Defence
Maduro claims more than 8 million militia members have been activated, though experts question both the number and training quality. Even using conservative estimates of several million, Venezuela has created what amounts to just a territorial defence network spread across at least 20 of its 23 states.
The Bolivarian Militia isn't designed to fight U.S. forces conventionally. Venezuelan military planners have distributed anti-tank systems, RPGs and domestically refurbished armoured vehicles throughout the militia structure. Numerous militia members, many of them middle-aged and outside the realm of physical military condition, have been spotted and photographed carrying an array of firearms from AK systems to older semi-automatic rifles.
Their strategy relies on making any U.S. ground operation face heavy resistance in cities and harsh terrain — the kind of asymmetric warfare that American forces faced in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Venezuela has recently conducted military exercises specifically designed to demonstrate this capability. In late September, these forces conducted drills in shanty towns across Caracas, showing troops how to use urban terrain against a more powerful enemy. The goal of these exercises was to show U.S. commanders that even if they can strike from a distance, any ground combat operation means urban warfare against irregular forces with a home-field advantage.
US Caribbean Deployment Lacks Forces for Full-Scale Venezuela Operations
The U.S. has deployed an overwhelming strike force: eight Navy ships including several destroyers, the cruiser USS Lake Erie, the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima, a nuclear-powered attack submarine, as well as F-35 fighters in Puerto Rico and B-52 bombers that conducted show of force missions off Venezuela's coast last week, according to U.S. Southern Command.
U.S. forces in the region include Tomahawk-capable ships and submarines positioned close to Puerto Rico and the southern Caribbean — meaning U.S. cruise missiles could strike deep into Venezuela without these vessels entering Venezuelan territorial waters. They can conduct precision strikes from submarines that Venezuelan forces can't detect. They can even put F-35s over Venezuelan airspace that the country's aging radars may not be able to track effectively.
But analysts at the Center for Strategic and International Studies note this deployment doesn't approach the troop levels or logistics infrastructure needed to sustain ground combat operations across Venezuela's vast territory. The 10,000 troops include Marines on ships and forces in Puerto Rico, but they lack the supply chains, bases and support units for a prolonged campaign.
The force was designed for counter-narcotics interdiction, not combat against an adversary with anti-ship missiles and integrated air defences. Coast Guard detachments aboard Navy vessels can board suspected drug boats. Marines can conduct visit, board, search and seizure operations. Neither is fully equipped to operate under the constant threat of Kh-31 missile strikes or coordinated air defense fire.
Anything beyond narcotics interdictions would require reinforcements and logistical support from units based in the mainland U.S.

Venezuelan Military Exercises Increase Risk of Accidental Conflict
Maduro has militarized civilian ports, allowing the positioning of mobile air defence systems and anti-ship missiles under the legal cover of his emergency decree. He's conducting daily military exercises that position forces near the coast. Venezuelan jets continue flying near U.S. ships.
U.S. Special Operations helicopters from the elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment were even spotted flying within 90 miles of Venezuela's coast in early October, according to The Washington Post.
None of Venezuela’s recent actions constitutes a threat that would justify a full American military response. But all of it increases the chance of an incident that could lead to significant escalation from both sides.
A Venezuelan jet conducting a routine pass could be misread as an attack run. A U.S. ship's defensive systems could automatically engage an approaching aircraft. A Venezuelan mobile missile battery could launch on a U.S. jet, forcing retaliation against targets in Venezuelan territory — exactly the expansion of operations that would require forces and supplies the U.S. doesn't currently have in place.
The recent capture of two survivors from a strike on an alleged drug vessel also shows the operational complexity. Trump announced Saturday that the two survivors — from Ecuador and Colombia — are being returned to their home countries for prosecution. The decision came after legal experts questioned under what authority the U.S. military could hold the individuals.
Meanwhile, the commander overseeing these operations, Adm. Alvin Holsey of U.S. Southern Command, announced his retirement just one year into his tenure. Sources told CNN that tensions between Holsey and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth centred on the pace of operations and concerns about their lawfulness, suggesting even the theatre commander questioned what his forces were being asked to do.
Adding another layer to the operations at sea, Trump confirmed on Oct. 15 that he authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations inside Venezuela, citing the flow of migrants and drugs from the country as the justification. When asked whether the CIA had authority to target Maduro directly, Trump called it “a ridiculous question for me to answer” but added, “I think Venezuela is feeling heat.”

What Happens Next?
U.S. forces in the Caribbean now face a military hurdle as they operate under rules designed for law enforcement against an adversary preparing for war. They have overwhelming firepower but limited logistics for sustained operations. They can strike from a distance but lack the forces for direct action in Venezuelan territory. And they're doing all of this while Venezuela positions their weapons most likely to inflict mass casualties on American ships and aircraft.
The Pentagon insists these operations remain focused on counternarcotics, even as CIA operations are confirmed in the region, Navy ships bomb vessels off Venezuela’s coast, and special forces stage nearby. But every Venezuelan military exercise, every fighter jet patrol, and the recent militia activation blur that line. U.S. forces aren't fighting Venezuela — but they're operating as if they might need to, against defences specifically designed to make that fight a costly one.

November 6, 2025 – New data from a landmark cross-border study from the Angus Reid Institute and Cardus compares views on faith and religion in Canada and the United States through the responses of more than 5,000 people in each country.
The study finds there is a significant gap in religiosity between the two neighbouring countries, but some similarities when it comes to demographic trends.
This report makes use of the Spectrum of Spirituality, an index developed in 2017 by Cardus and the Angus Reid Institute to measure Canadian mindsets on faith and spirituality. For the first time since the creation of the Spectrum, it is applied to American respondents to allow for comparisons of religiosity between Canada and its close neighbour.
Canadians are far less religious than Americans, according to the Spectrum: Americans are twice as likely (37%) to be Religiously Committed than Canadians (18%) and half as likely to be Non-Believers (10% in the U.S.; 19% in Canada).
There are also clear dividing lines between the two countries when it comes to faith in the public square. Americans are much more likely to say they are public about their faith (70%) than Canadians (56%), and more likely to believe that public figures should speak and act on their religious beliefs (56% in U.S.; 34% in Canada).
But there are some similarities. In the U.S., much has been made of data that show Generation Z is reversing a decline in religiosity observed between generations. That finding is echoed by these new data: Americans under 35 are less likely to be Religiously Committed than those older than 54 but show more religious tendencies than those between the ages of 35 and 54. In Canada, one-quarter (24%) of 18- to 24-year-olds fall into the Religiously Committed group according to the Spectrum, the most of any age group.
