Canadian Pro-Life News Bits, July 12

I’m Pete Baklinski, and this is your Canadian Pro-Life News Bits – where I let you know what’s happening on our country’s pro-life and pro-family front.

It’s good to be back in the saddle after a two-week break from writing the News Bits

Our country’s top pro-life researcher, Patricia Maloney, has uncovered the millions of dollars that a pro-abortion organization recently received to push for increased abortion access across Canada. Action Canada has received more than $3 million in grants, and this money is being used to expand access to the killing of preborn children.

It is diabolical that our government continues to fund this death-promoting machine.

Our Youth Coordinator, Hailey Smith, has penned a hopeful piece about how Gen Z is changing the face of the pro-life movement. She writes about how young pro-lifers are building a culture of life, becoming more organized and visible, reflecting deeply on the issues, and changing the way pro-life views are communicated. If you want insight into how today’s youth are not merely the future, but the present, of the pro-life movement, I encourage you to read this piece.

On the 10th anniversary of Canada legalizing the evil practice of doctors killing sick and elderly patients, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has voiced “renewed concern” about euthanasia and assisted suicide. “We remain steadfast in opposing euthanasia and assisted suicide,” the bishops said in a June 10 statement. They also asked people of faith to “pray for the conversion of hearts and minds away from this practice, and to be present to persons who are sick and vulnerable.” Bravo!

You have likely heard by now that Bill C-9, dubbed the “anti-Christian” bill, has passed the Senate and is on its way back to the House of Commons for a quick vote on a small amendment before it becomes the law of the land. We issued a press release when the bill passed, warning of the serious threat to religious freedom that it poses. Our president, Jeff Gunnarson, said that despite the bill’s passage being a dark day for religious freedom, it will not stop faithful Christians from speaking the Word of God, even as biblical truths are increasingly labelled as “hateful” by those hostile to Christ.

There are also two stories about successes in the battle against LGBT ideology. After pressure from parents, CLC, and religious leaders, an Ontario Catholic school board stood its ground and refused to allow a motion to proceed that would have permitted the 'Pride' flag to be raised in June. Praise God! Also, our fourth annual National 'Pride' Flag Walkout Day was another success, with many people showing their opposition to LGBT ideology in the classroom.

The June edition of CLC National News, our monthly newsletter, is now available online. It’s a great way to catch up on the most important projects we’re working on. Also, don’t miss this month’s letter to pro-lifers from CLC President Jeff Gunnarson, in which he remembers our former president, Jim Hughes.

Don’t miss the must-see video of the week: the funeral homily for former CLC president Jim Hughes. Preached by Fr. Louis Di Rocco, the homily is a beautiful testimony to Jim’s humour, wit, gifts, and especially his decades of pro-life activism.

Finally, don’t miss my reflection at the end about Canada’s pro-life movement and the temptation of Boromir.

TRUMP:

Trump calls off planned Thursday evening Strikes on Iran

The president said discussions to end the conflict have reached the highest level of Iranian leadership, but the country’s government has not publicly weighed in.

BREAKING NEWS:

Just hours after declaring that the U.S. would strike Iran “VERY HARD TONIGHT,” President Donald Trump abruptly reversed course Thursday afternoon, announcing that he had canceled the planned attacks after what he described as a breakthrough in negotiations with Tehran.

“Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The president added that a potential deal to end the monthslong war has been “approved by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others,” saying that the “time and place” of the signing will be announced shortly.

He notably did not list Iran in the list of “all parties involved,” and the Iranian government has not publicly weighed in on Thursday.

Trump has for weeks oscillated between touting a near-final agreement and threatening additional military action, making Thursday’s announcement the latest twist in a conflict that has repeatedly lurched between diplomacy and escalation.

Original story below:

President Donald Trump on Thursday sharply escalated his threats against Iran, warning that the U.S. was preparing to take control of Kharg Island, a strip of land critical to Iran’s oil exports.

But almost immediately, he walked back the threat, telling Fox News this morning that he wasn’t sure the United States “has the stomach” for a protracted fight over the island.

“I’m not sure the country has the appetite for it. Does that make sense to you?” Trump said. “As good as it is. By the way, as good as it is, that’s always been my No. 1 thing. But as good as it is, I’m not sure the country has the appetite for it. And that’s OK, I understand that.“

The president’s interview came less than an hour after he wrote on Truth Social that the U.S. intends to continue striking Iran on Thursday night and floated Venezuela as a model for managing the Middle East country’s energy infrastructure. The resumption of major military operations against Tehran shows that the president is willing to press forward, despite widespread public opposition to the war amid rising gas prices and a global energy crunch.

“The United States will be hitting Iran (Whose Navy, Air Force, Radar, Anti Aircraft, and all other forms of Defense, together with most of its offensive capability, are GONE!), VERY HARD TONIGHT,” he wrote on Truth Social, the social media platform he owns.

The president’s post marked his most serious threat against Iran since before the two sides agreed to a ceasefire in April. It comes after U.S. forces launched airstrikes in Iran this week, with the ceasefire increasingly under strain and peace talks stalled.

This isn’t the first time Trump has taken to Truth Social to invoke dire threats against Iran since the U.S. and Israel first struck the country in late February. In April, just before the two sides agreed to the ceasefire, Trump warned that a “whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.”

The president’s plan to assert control over Kharg Island — a small landmass in the Persian Gulf that serves as Iran’s main oil export hub — “at some point in the not too distant future” would mark a major shift in the war effort, now well into its fourth month.

In addition to previewing new attack plans, Trump said the U.S. would “assume total control of their Oil and Gas Markets, much like we have with Venezuela, which is working out brilliantly for both Venezuela and the United States of America.”

Kharg is Iran’s oil hub, where about 90 percent of its exports are loaded. Trump has previously launched strikes on the island, but avoided hitting its energy infrastructure.

White House allies have called for the seizure of Kharg, a 5-mile strip of land just off Iran’s coast, as a strategy to force the Iranian regime to capitulate by choking off its economic lifeline.

Watch: The Conversation

However, the seizure of Kharg — as opposed to its destruction by missile strikes — would require a risky ground troop operation likely under heavy fire. First, U.S. forces would have to travel through the Strait of Hormuz and into the gulf where they would be exposed to Iranian attacks. Troops would also have to storm the island, then defend whatever land they seize.

That could cost more American lives at a time when the public has soured on the war — and Trump’s approval rating has fallen.

Still, the president on Thursday morning brushed aside suggestions that he’s growing impatient with Iran.

Asked on Fox News whether he was frustrated with Tehran, Trump replied: “I’m not frustrated. I don’t get frustrated.”

The president then paired his most aggressive rhetoric yet about Iran’s military position with a renewed insistence that he does not want to send U.S. troops into the country.

“There will be more bombing tonight. It will be bigger. Bigger. More powerful,” Trump said, arguing that U.S. forces have already destroyed Iran’s air defenses. “I don’t want to have boots on the ground. If I wanted to, we could put a small group of soldiers and take over the whole place.”

On Wednesday, he told reporters that the U.S. would “be attacking them very hard” in response to an American Apache helicopter that crashed near Oman on Monday after it was struck, Trump said, by Iran. The two sides have traded strikes, with Iran targeting American assets in other Middle Eastern nations.

Iran hawks cheered the escalation. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), in an X post Thursday morning, called the president’s threat “welcome news,” adding that taking Kharg Island would be the “ultimate gamechanger.”

“The combination of continuing to force the Strait open and at the same time controlling Kharg Island’s operations by force or blockade would be the most consequential move President Trump could make, regaining the dominance and leverage America needs to end this conflict on favorable terms,” Graham wrote.

Most Read

Iran, Graham continued, isn’t a “reliable partner” in the negotiations to end the conflict and “at every turn” creates provocation in an attempt to obtain leverage in discussions.

Trump has long claimed he would take Kharg but has not moved forward thus far. That’s because any attempt would likely result in a significant escalation of Iran’s attacks on the region’s energy infrastructure. Iran has already knocked out a significant portion of Qatar’s natural gas production and has launched drones and missiles at other regional infrastructure.

At the same time, the global energy market has already burned through its buffers of oil inventories. Many regions of the world are expected to hit tank bottom in the coming weeks. A further stoppage of oil flows from the Gulf region would likely cause oil prices to spike beyond $150 a barrel and could drive domestic gas prices beyond $5 a gallon.

Trump to Nominate Jay Clayton for Director of National Intelligence

President Donald Trump said Thursday he will nominate Jay Clayton, the Manhattan U.S attorney, to be the next director of national intelligence.

In a post to social media, Trump urged Congress to confirm Clayton “as soon as possible.”

Clayton’s nomination comes after Trump tapped housing official Bill Pulte to serve in the role in an acting capacity, triggering an uproar on Capitol Hill. Pulte is best known for pushing mortgage fraud accusations against Trump’s political foes.

This is a breaking news story that will be updated.

GLOBAL:

Action alert Down’s Syndrome

I am writing to ask you to take one more 30-second action to help stop Kim Leadbeater’s assisted suicide Bill from being brought back. There are now just five days left until Wednesday 17 June, when the MPs who were successful in the Private Members’ Bill ballot will present their chosen Bills to Parliament. But some MPs will make their decision before then.

That means there may be even less time to influence which Bill they choose.Even if your MP was not drawn in the ballot, they still need to hear from you. This important new information needs to be put in front of MPs now. MPs talk to colleagues, parties are watching the strength of feeling across the country, and if the assisted suicide Bill is brought back, every MP may soon face this issue again.

TAKE ACTION

The Down Syndrome Research Foundation has launched a new tool that enables you to email your MP explaining why the return of the Leadbeater Bill would put people with Down’s syndrome and learning disabilities at risk.Even if you have already contacted your MP about why the Bill should not be revived, it’s really important to write again using this new tool. Your MP needs to hear clearly about the risks that bringing back this Bill would pose to people with Down’s syndrome and learning disabilities. Please click the button below to contact your MP now. It takes just 30 seconds.

Thank you so much for all your help during this critical time.

A new report examines how millions in taxpayer dollars were used to shape transgender-related guidance and training.

FROM THE FRONTLINES

Thursday June 11th | News that moves fast and matters.

A report claims the Biden administration spent nearly $20 million on policies and training materials related to transgender issues.

Weekly jobless claims increased as concerns over global conflicts continue to weigh on the economic outlook.

The Florida Supreme Court has allowed a Republican-drawn congressional map to remain in place for the 2026 midterms.

I drink 8 glasses a day - so why am I still dehydrated?

After age 60, three hidden bodily changes sabotage how you absorb water, causing stubborn dry mouth, fatigue, and brain fog.

Fortunately, scientists have discovered a simple fix that allows you to drink LESS water but stay MORE hydrated. This breakthrough delivers all-day energy and sharp focus in just 30 minutes.

Twenty Million Dollars Bought Biden a Blueprint for Transgender Indoctrination

$20 million in federal spending was used to support policies and materials critics say promote transgender ideology in government and education systems.

Why it matters: It highlights the ongoing political battle over how gender identity is addressed in schools and federal policy, with sharp disagreement over government influence.

Should the federal government be involved in shaping how gender identity is taught in schools and public programs?

Weekly Jobless Claims Increase as War Concerns Loom Over Economy

Weekly jobless claims ticked up as analysts point to war-related uncertainty as a possible drag on hiring.

Why it matters: It suggests the labor market may be softening slightly, with global tensions adding new pressure on employer confidence.

Could geopolitical instability start having a bigger impact on U.S. jobs than domestic economic policy?

Florida Supreme Court Clears Path for Republican-Drawn Congressional Map in 2026 Midterms

The Florida Supreme Court allowed a Republican-drawn congressional map to stand, clearing the way for its use in the 2026 midterms.

Why it matters: The decision could shape Florida’s balance of power in Congress by influencing how district lines are drawn for upcoming elections.

How much should courts factor in political impact when approving congressional maps?

Secret Report Leaked in France

In April 2024, a classified document landed on Emmanuel Macron’s desk. Seventy-three pages, stamped Secret Défense. The document had one purpose: to answer the question that French politicians had been avoiding for twenty years. What is actually happening to this country — and who is making it happen. Macron read it and locked it in a drawer.

Then it leaked. In May 2025, Le Figaro obtained the full document and published it. It was a detailed, deliberate, patient, funded, and coordinated plan across borders. A plan to take over France, not by force, but from the inside. Neighborhood by neighborhood, school by school, sports club by sports club. The name of the document, “Frères Musulmans et Islamisme Politique en France,” - The Muslim Brotherhood and Political Islam in France.

This is the plan, detailed, Stage by stage, neighborhood by neighborhood, for the Islamic conquest of France by the Muslim Brotherhood:

Even the French police do not enter without backup. Ambulances request escorts before responding to calls. In the lost territories of Marseille, law enforcement officers disguise themselves as Muslims before making arrests. France’s own intelligence service has mapped 150 such districts across the country. A former senior official of French foreign intelligence put it in numbers: these enclaves exist in 859 cities, and four million people — six percent of France’s entire population — live inside them.

Who cares if our transportation projects make sense?

With both the Toronto airport expansion and high-speed rail, it feels like the thinking behind them was 'Sounds great. Let’s do it'

In their haste, the two leaders have largely skipped the part where they explain why the project makes sense, after weighing the drawbacks against the advantages.

Ford has said he backs high-speed rail, but would prefer it used existing transportation routes; Carney has said he hasn’t decided whether to back Ford’s airport plan, yet. But neither project has anything resembling a feasibility study or a business case, at least one released to the public. Lacking those basic elements, how could anyone determine whether the ideas are good or not?

"Enough with all the national strategies and plans!" (Financial Post)

Last week Ottawa announced new strategic plans for AI, forestry and eye care, which means these sectors are all about to be in big trouble

Last time I looked at our Constitution, Forestry and Eye Care were all Provincial responsibilities falling under Natural Resources and Healthcare.  Oh well, there's no stopping Cagey Carney.  Right?

How about eye care? The government’s eye-care strategy, it tells us, “is guided by principles of equity, inclusion, reconciliation, collaboration, value, and meaningful engagement with people with lived experience. It recognizes vision loss as both a health and social issue and emphasizes the importance of person-centred, accessible, and culturally safe care.” What a national eye care strategy guided by equity, inclusion and reconciliation actually means, no one knows, except that it makes the whole thing sound more like a social experiment or social justice initiative than an actual effort to improve eye care.

Happy summer! As we dive into the next few months of warm weather and sunshine, our movement is not slowing down anytime soon. The House is rising next week and while MPs are headed back to their ridings for the summer, we want to make sure that the federal work on housing and homelessness is not put on pause.

 In this week's newsletter:

All the best,

Thunder Bay providing a soft landing for women and gender-diverse people.

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Northwestern Ontario runs a low-barrier, harm-reduction based transitional housing program with 36 beds across three homes. They offer up to two years of support for women and gender-diverse people experiencing homelessness in Thunder Bay. In 2025, the team helped house 34 people. Many of the staff bring their own lived experience to the work and create a culture of hope, trust, and what one resident referred to as “radical love and acceptance.”

Simcoe County finding homes for youth and seniors through rapid rehousing projects.

We recently profiled rapid rehousing programs in Simcoe County – Ethen's Place for youth aged 16-24 and Rodger’s Way for seniors 55+. They have collectively helped 40 people move from homelessness into safe, affordable housing since opening their doors in 2024. Through personalized support, community resources, and the Canada-Ontario Housing Benefit, residents are rebuilding their lives and finding permanent homes.

Bill C-20, the Build Canada Homes Act, passed in the House of Commons, meaning the Government will now be able to officially set up Build Canada Homes as a Crown corporation. In the coming weeks and months we’re expecting more details around its structure, applications for funding, and investments.

Parliament is soon set to rise for the summer. Members of Parliament will return to their ridings for the next couple of months, so now is a good time to reach out and talk to them while they’re back in your community.

Meet’s CAEH’s Improvement Advisor, Maya Beit-Arie

Maya currently lives in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States, which is also where she grew up. Pre-colonization, this was known as Totaunt, a town of the Neponset band of the Massachusett people. The colonial Commonwealth of Massachusetts was the Confederation of the Massachusett people.

As an Improvement Advisor, she works with communities to think differently about their day-to-day, to create solutions and build improvements into processes and systems. Maya deeply believes in the dignity and value of all human life, that no person or people are disposable, and that everyone is deserving of respect. Our society’s most basic responsibility is ensuring people have their basic needs – like housing – met in a dignified and respectful manner, and we are failing to meet that core responsibility.

Being based in the US and her previous work, Maya brings a different perspective to the work and to what potential possibilities are out there. While there are many differences between the US and Canada, there are even more similarities. The US has been grappling with challenges in housing and homelessness for a long time, and from that experience come many creative and innovative ideas that can be adapted!

What’s on your playlist/reading list/down time activity?

I love spending time outside, as much as I possibly can! While I do enjoy hiking and camping, I’d describe myself more as “outside-y” than “outdoorsy” - I love a long walk, reading a book on a patio or a beach, picnics, forest strolls, etc. I am out for a walk as soon as I wake up, and as soon as I close my laptop at the end of the day!

1. Activation fees: The two words you never enjoy hearing when signing up for phone and internet plans. Well perhaps you won't be hearing them again. A new ban on those and some and some other fees comes into effect on Friday, making it easier and presumably cheaper to change providers and plans.

2. Watch out for them trucks!  A trucking company linked to a fatal crash in Brandon, Man., had its safety permit revoked several years ago before resurfacing under a new name, a practice that has become increasingly common among bad actors in the transportation industry.

Manitoba Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor confirmed the driver, Brijpal Panwar, had previously worked for Conquer Transportation Inc. in Alberta, formerly known as Conquer Transport Inc. in Manitoba.

3. Mosquito Watch:  There are more than 80 species of mosquitoes in Canada, and around 40 of those can be found in the Ottawa Valley, Avramov says,” Baldin writes. "Each species has its own biology and ecology, developing its own preference for different times of the year.  No, you will not be bitten by the 64 million Genetically Modified Mosquitoes being released in the lower USA.  At least not this year.

4. Tim Hortons could bankrupt Rebel News.  Tim's hasn't just called the police on our journalists — three times, for standing on a public sidewalk and asking why they keep importing foreign workers while claiming to hire Canadians. Trump’s Great Settlement with Iran

Very important clip here.

Trump says we made a “great settlement of the war with Iran”, documents are being finalized, and they are deciding on the final signing location.

Trump says Iran agreed there will be no nuclear weapons, which Trump reiterated is the whole reason we had to undertake this operation to begin with.

Trump also spoke with the other leaders of the region, namely Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, so my guess is he wants to get them all on the Abraham Accords, and finalize peace in the Middle East.

Trump is setting up for his grand victory. Do you see where this is headed? Trump is in position to bring a lasting peace to the Middle East, right as the World Cup is starting and the 250th anniversary is coming up. While the entire world is watching the USA, Trump is about to pull off the greatest humanitarian/military/geopolitical maneuver, in world history.

TRUMP: "We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran, and we're going to be subject to finalization of documents, which should get done over the next few days. We'll probably have a signing, maybe in Europe — and it's a great thing."

Timing is everything!
