Private schools are churning out troops who can use hobbyist racing quadcopters as deadly loitering munitions.
As Ukraine leans on suicide drones to wear down Russia’s invading forces, private, civilian-run training schools are working to supply the Ukrainian army with thousands of pilots.
That’s no mean feat. The drones are extremely hard to fly, requiring weeks of training before a pilot is ready to fight on the front line.
“The chance that you will literally fly into a wall during training is higher” than with other types of drones, said Ihor Dvoretskyi, a project manager with Ukraine’s Defense Ministry who also volunteers with Victory Drones, one of the country’s largest drone education centers.
More formally known as loitering munitions, suicide drones have emerged as a key weapon of the war, with both sides using them in large numbers. Some are sophisticated, purpose-built munitions, but many are hobbyist racing drones adapted to serve as flying improvised explosive devices. Such drones are also known as first-person view (FPV) drones, after the goggles used to fly them.
“In every area, they’re using FPV drones,” said Yehor Cherniev, deputy chairman of the Ukrainian parliament’s Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence. “They’re a cheap weapon, and a weapon that сan be used en masse.”
But it takes longer to learn to fly them than, say, the hardware-and-software-stabilized photography quadcopters used across Ukraine’s frontline to coordinate artillery.
“You are literally flying this drone like it was a Cessna [plane] from the 1960s,” said Dvoretskyi.
To simplify the task, FPV drones typically fly in airborne teams with photography drones that sport a wider range of view and advanced zoom lenses. The operators of the photo drones mark the GPS coordinates of Russian vehicles and soldiers for the FPV pilots.
“FPV drones can’t exist without [photography drones],” said Anton Frolov, the lead instructor at the Kruk drone-operator school in Kyiv.
Highly motivated students can become good FPV pilots in around 30 days, with pilots learning theoretical knowledge, flying, and even how to repair drones in that time period, according to Maria Berlinska, the founder of Victory Drones.
In addition to pilot training, VIctory Drones runs a vast web of other resources, including seminars on drones, education on how to assemble FPV drones, and courses in using battlefield intelligence software programs like Ukraine’s homegrown Kropiva program.
Berlinska, a longstanding advocate for Ukrainian women’s role in the military, also launched an initiative to train female drone pilots.
“This is a technological war,” she said. “It’s not so important to be very physically strong, you have to be strong in your mind.”
Training at Kruk runs slightly shorter, clocking in at two weeks. Frolov said the training has been compressed to accommodate the needs of the war. The Kruk course includes several hours on how to build FPV drones.
Frolov said students start by using flight simulators similar to what’s available on video game site Steam. They then move onto field exercises, with students practicing strikes on a fridge-sized robot driving at around 10 miles an hour.
The most talented pilots are used to playing computer games, he said. People with “PlayStation experience” do better, Dvoretskyi agreed.
In the last ten months, Victory Drones has prepared a thousand FPV pilots, making a total of 38,000 graduates in the school’s various programs. Berlinska said. Kruk has trained around 800 FPV pilots at a rate of 80 a month, for a total of 3,300 drone pilot graduates.
Berlinska estimates the country needs 10,000 FPV pilots in its one million-strong military. It’s unclear how many drone pilots are currently trained, given that training is done at civilian-run training centers, like Kruk and Victory Drones.
Everyone, though, needs to have some level of familiarity with FPV drones, said Berlinska. “Ideally, every soldier could use a drone like they could a rifle.”
Ukraine’s efforts, as is typical for the cash-strapped country, are constrained by finances, especially given the time-consuming process for training FPV pilots.
Such centers may receive funding from Ukraine’s government. Frolov said that Kruk had received government funding but that it had ended, leaving them to support operations through fundraising activity.
“It’s a tough time for us,” he said.
With more money, Berlinska said Victory Drones could expand training, and add in more training to focus on electronic warfare. The cost of training a soldier on quadcopters is around $35, while the cost of training an FPV pilot is six to seven times that cost, she said.
The school also hopes to expand training for rescue teams. “We know that this winter there will be a lot of missile attacks against civilian infrastructure,” said Berlinska. “We’d like to train rescue teams on how to find people under the debris.”

Diplomats sent to hot spots overstepped their authority, former CSIS director says:
A veteran Canadian MP met three times with the ambassador of a country in the crosshairs of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, leading CSIS to warn the parliamentarian away from further interactions, CBC News has learned.
"You just cast a shadow of doubt over everyone," the MP said, speaking confidentially because he was not authorized to comment publicly on the matter.
"Once you have that doubt placed on you, I don't know how you recover."
CBC News is not identifying the country in question in order to protect the MP's identity.
CBC reached out to more than 30 MPs across party lines who identify as members of ethnic or religious minorities to ask if they thought they had ever been inappropriately surveilled by Canada's intelligence agencies.
The MP who spoke to CBC News said the ambassador reached out to him for a meeting and he felt he needed to oblige out of politeness — although he was well aware of Canada's issues with the government the diplomat represented.
"I may have met with him three times," the MP said.
A warning from CSIS
He said he was surprised when the spy agency reached out to him afterwards.
The MP said CSIS warned him, in a face-to-face encounter, to "be careful" because the diplomat in question was "not trustworthy" and "might be seeking information."
"It's not like I disagree," the MP said, adding he thought it was strange a Canadian intelligence official felt the need to visit him in person.
The MP said he never saw the ambassador again after hearing from CSIS.
"Obviously, CSIS's mandate is to protect our safety and security, and they keep an eye on foreigners who are agents of foreign states in Canada," the MP told CBC News.
He said he doesn't know how CSIS learned he had met with the ambassador.
"I assumed that they were tapping his phone," he said.
A recent court case lifted the veil on CSIS's embassy wiretapping methods.

It is no secret that Joe Biden hates this country, but now he has taken things too far and resorted to kicking veterans out of their houses.
In a move that has sparked outrage and resentment among American citizens, a 95-year-old Korean War veteran, Frank Tammaro, and over 50 other senior citizens, including seven other war veterans, were forced to leave their assisted living home, Island Shores Senior Residence, in Staten Island, New York, in September 2022.
The reason for their eviction? Making room for the illegal immigrants that Joe Biden has flooded this country with.
Tammaro, who served his country with honor and dedication during the Korean War, now finds himself displaced from his longtime home, struggling to obtain the healthcare aid he needs.
His daughter, Barbara Annunziata, expressed her outrage at the situation, stating, “It’s not fair to anybody.” She further criticized the city officials for prioritizing migrants over American citizens.

Explosive allegations have been made by Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins, who claims that the FBI was deeply involved in the Capitol protest on January 6, 2021.
He specifically asserts that the FBI had over 200 agents embedded within the crowd, including some dressed as Trump supporters before the doors were opened.
Higgins further alleges that the FBI infiltrated online chat groups, websites, and social media accounts across the country to monitor groups discussing objections to COVID-19 oppression.
He claims that the FBI effectively infiltrated these groups and initiated suggestions of potential violence or an act of occupation of the Capitol on January 6.
These allegations raise serious questions about the FBI’s role in the events of that day, and Higgins is not alone in his suspicions.
Others have also questioned the FBI’s involvement in the Capitol protest, including former President Donald Trump.
The FBI has denied Higgins’ allegations, but the evidence does raise major concerns. For example, recently released surveillance footage from that day shows protesters entering the Capitol after being let in by Capitol Police.
The footage also shows further police violence against those protesters, including beatings, tear gassing, and the shooting of an unarmed woman who was subsequently killed.
Over 1,200 Americans were arrested and charged for their participation in the protest.
Many of them were charged with misdemeanor trespassing, and many who did not even enter the building were charged as well.
The narrative from the Biden administration is that it was a “deadly insurrection,” but no one has been charged with insurrection, and the only person killed that day was an unarmed Trump supporter.
In light of these facts, it is understandable why there are questions about the FBI’s role in the events of January 6th.
If Higgins’ allegations are true, it would mean that the FBI was not only monitoring the protest but that it was actively involved in instigating and directing the violence.
This would be a major scandal, and it is something that needs to be thoroughly investigated. We cannot allow the FBI to get away with such a serious breach of public trust.
The FBI’s actions on January 6th raise serious questions about the agency’s commitment to upholding the law and protecting the rights of Americans.
If the FBI was indeed involved in instigating the violence at the Capitol, it would be a betrayal of public trust that cannot be tolerated.
We demand a full and transparent investigation into the FBI’s role in the events of that day.
The American people deserve to know the truth, and those responsible for any wrongdoing must be held accountable.

One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road but, even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her. Even with the smile on his face, she looked worried.
No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was that chill which only fear can put in you. He said, 'I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm?
By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.' Well, all she had was a flat tire but, for an old lady, that was bad enough.
Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two.. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid.
Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need and, God knows, there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.
He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed and, Bryan added, 'And think of me.' He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight.
A few miles down the road, the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to get a bite to eat and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy-looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole \scene was unfamiliar to her.
The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that, even being on her feet for the whole day, couldn't erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude.
The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan. After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred-dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred-dollar bill but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back.
The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something was written on the napkin. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: 'You don't owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.'
Under the napkin were four more $100 bills. Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard....

On Sun. 3 Dec. United States Central Command (Cent Com) Statement:
Iran made four attacks on three separate commercial vessels connected to 14 separate nations, which represented a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security.
· "Today, there were four attacks against three separate commercial vessels operating in international waters in the southern Red Sea. These three vessels are connected to 14 separate nations. The Arleigh-Burke Class destroyer USS CARNEY responded to the distress calls from the ships and provided assistance.
· At approximately 9:15 a.m. Sanaa time, the CARNEY detected an anti-ship ballistic missile attack fired from Houthi controlled areas of Yemen toward the M/V UNITY EXPLORER, impacting in the vicinity of the vessel. UNITY EXPLORER is a Bahamas flagged, U.K. owned and operated, bulk cargo ship crewed by sailors from two nations. The CARNEY was conducting a patrol in the Red Sea and detected the attack on the UNITY EXPLORER.
· At approximately 12 p.m., and while in international waters, CARNEY engaged and shot down a UAV launched from Houthi controlled areas in Yemen. The drone was headed toward CARNEY although its specific target is not clear. We cannot assess at this time whether the Carney was a target of the UAVs. There was no damage to the U.S. vessel or injuries to personnel.
· In a separate attack at approximately 12:35 p.m., UNITY EXPLORER reported they were struck by a missile fired from Houthi controlled areas in Yemen. CARNEY responded to the distress call. While assisting with the damage assessment, CARNEY detected another inbound UAV, destroying the drone with no damage or injuries on the CARNEY or UNITY EXPLORER. UNITY EXPLORER reports minor damage from the missile strike.
· At approximately 3:30 p.m. the M/V NUMBER 9 was struck by a missile fired from Houthi controlled areas in Yemen while operating international shipping lanes in the Red Sea. The Panamanian flagged, Bermuda and U.K. owned and operated, bulk carrier reported damage and no casualties.
· At approximately 4:30 p.m., the M/V SOPHIE II, sent a distress call stating they were struck by a missile. CARNEY again responded to the distress call and reported no significant damage. While en route to render support, CARNEY shot down a UAV headed in its direction. SOPHIE II is a Panamanian flagged bulk carrier, crewed by sailors from eight countries.
· These attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security. They have jeopardized the lives of international crews representing multiple countries around the world. We also have every reason to believe that these attacks, while launched by the Houthis in Yemen, are fully enabled by Iran. The United States will consider all appropriate responses in full coordination with its international allies and partners."
