“Stand therefore.” What an incredible challenge! It takes courage to stand. Yet before courage comes determination. Human calculations will always find a thousand reasonable reasons to stand down or quit, which may sound good, but are usually wrong. 


Imagine how Moses felt when God called him to lead the children of Israel and speak to Pharaoh. Moses convinced himself that he wasn’t eloquent enough because he stuttered. God’s answer? “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the LORD? Now therefore, go....” (Exodus 4:11-12). And Moses went in God’s power.


When God called Jeremiah to be a prophet to the nations, he protested that he was too young (Jeremiah 1:6). Jeremiah felt unqualified and inadequate because of his lack of experience. God’s answer? “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and whatever I command you, you shall speak” (Jeremiah 1:7-8). And Jeremiah spoke God’s words.

Speaking to a crowd of some 800 people, Salatin tried to encourage people to lose their fear of starting a homestead. “Start small,” he recommended, insisting that “good enough is perfect.” Even a small piece of land can be of help to start raising some animals or to grow some vegetables. The founder of the Polyface Farm pointed out that along the highways of Mexico, many a cow is seen grazing and keeping the grass down, while in Italy and other European countries, many a city family has a little garden plot at the outskirts of the city to go to on the weekends.


Salatin also stressed the beauty of living a quieter life in the countryside, with less driving and raising one’s children in nature, with bonfires and frogs. He explained that there are many opportunities in the countryside – such as taking care of elderly people on a farm who would welcome the caretaker to farm on their land – if one looks for them.

“Create hope and help when society becomes helpless and hopeless,” was Salatin’s motto, and he encouraged his audience to take care of the creation that God has given us.”

“Faith tops fear,” he went on to say.

 

The Doughertys, who are Catholic and raised and homeschooled eight children on their homestead, gave “Six Farm Rules” to their audience, which should help them start a farm.

Storm to only get worse tonight into Monday, meteorologists warn

Sunday brought heavy snow and ice, but Monday is set to be far worse, according to the National Weather Service.

One to two feet of snow will continue to fall in the parts of the Northeast and 'catastrophic ice' will take over farther south, the agency said.

The predicted ice storm could cause further power outages as more than one million Americans are already in the dark.

Meanwhile, the New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services, said the worst is yet to come.

'The worst conditions are expected between 12 PM today and 12 AM Monday,' the agency said.


Ontario sees 150 crashes

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt has reported that its Highway Safety Division has responded to 150 crashes and another 125 cars stuck in ditches or snowbanks in need of assistance.

He added that police are investigating one 'sudden death' incident, though it is unclear whether the storm was a factor, according to the Toronto Star.
