In a materialistic world one of the hardest character traits to acquire is contentment—being satisfied and patient with the way things are while trusting God for changes to be made. We can take some comfort from the fact that the apostle Paul said that he had to learn contentment, that it didn’t come naturally or easily to him. In fact, when he wrote about learning contentment, he was in jail!
Being discontent often manifests as an insistence on change. We are not happy with our possessions or our position in life, and we attempt to change our status by our own efforts. But rather than being achieved through change, contentment is frequently learned by waiting on the Lord: “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). Waiting on the Lord is not passive; it is the active pursuit of God and His will through prayerful, patient seeking.
Gratitude is a sign of contentment and can be learned while waiting on the Lord.
Contentment with what we have is absolutely vital to our spiritual health.Jerry Bridges

Trump Didn’t Mention This About Your 401(k)
He said it was “through the roof” Wednesday and “dropped” Thursday. Here’s what happened to your money.

President Donald Trump posted about Americans’ retirement accounts twice this week, two days apart, and neither post included any returns. Here are the numbers behind his claims and what they mean for an S&P 500 index fund, the most common holding in a 401(k).
What Did Trump Say?
On Wednesday, the day after Democrats won both chambers of Congress, he wrote on Truth Social that the stock market “just hit another Record High” and that “your 401(k)s are through the roof.”
On Thursday evening, after the S&P 500 fell 4.4%, he wrote: “The Stock Market suffered one of the Worst Days in History based on the results of the Election. Such a sad thing to watch! It took so much work to get us to a level that no one has ever seen before, and then this. Your 401(k)s have, therefore, dropped.”
He added that the stock market “crashed today because the Dumocrats had a big Tuesday.”
Number 1: −4.36%
That’s the S&P 500’s decline on Thursday, which took it to 7,353.73.
On a $100,000 S&P 500 index fund, it was about a $4,360 loss in one day. The Dow fell 3.44% and the Nasdaq 5.52%. It was the market’s worst day since April 2025, when tariffs shook markets, according to the Associated Press.
Most 401(k)s are not 100% in stocks. A balance that is 60% in an S&P 500 fund and 40% in bonds and cash lost about $2,600 per $100,000 on Thursday. Trump is right that the account dropped, and the question is how much.
Number 2: −2.5%
That’s the S&P 500’s decline from Tuesday’s close through Friday. The index rose 1.58% on Wednesday, the Dow’s biggest post-midterm rally in 44 years according to Motley Fool, then fell 4.36% on Thursday and rebounded 0.31% on Friday.
A $100,000 S&P fund is down about $2,500 since Election Day. The Nasdaq is down about 3.1% in that period and the Dow about 1%.
So, the account did fall this week, but the overall decline is a fraction of Thursday’s, because Wednesday’s gains and Friday’s rebound offset part of it.
Number 3: +7.8%
That’s how much the S&P 500 is up for the year through Friday, by my calculation from AP’s Thursday year-to-date figure of 7.4% and Friday’s gain. A $100,000 balance at the start of the year in an S&P 500 fund is worth about $107,800.
The Dow was up about 7.2% and the Nasdaq about 4.6% for the year as of Thursday, and the Russell 2000 was up about 10%.
Both of Trump’s claims sit inside that number. Retirement accounts are well above where they started 2026, and they are also below where they were a week ago.
Was It “One Of The Worst Days In History”?
By percentage, no. Thursday’s S&P 500 loss was the worst since April 2025, but far smaller than the biggest one-day declines on record.
On Black Monday in October 1987, the Dow fell about 22.6%. Thursday’s Nasdaq 100 decline of 6.4% was its worst since March 2020, according to CNN.
Some measures were large. Chip stocks fell 12.3% in one day, their worst since early 2020, and CNN estimated about $2.5 trillion was wiped from the market.
The scale of that dollar loss is why some outlets described the day as historic.
Did The Election Cause The Selloff?
Analysts tie it to the election, though through a narrow channel. Thursday’s decline was led by AI and data center stocks, where investors worry a Democratic Congress will tighten regulation and slow construction.
Nvidia fell 9.3%. CNN noted Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa campaigned on a temporary data center moratorium.
Wednesday’s rally and Thursday’s reversal both came from the same uncertainty about what the new Congress will do.
Stocks were also already under pressure. The Nasdaq fell 5.3% in October, its worst month since March 2025, as investors questioned how much AI spending will pay off.
