When God was taken out of REMEMBERANCE DAY Events in CANADA
Commentary
For more than a century, Canadians gathered every Remembrance Day to honour our veterans with wreath-laying, reverent song, and solemn prayer. But thanks to an updated decree issued by the Department of National Defence, any mention of “religious specific language, including references to God” by military personnel at any public event, including Remembrance Day ceremonies, remains strictly prohibited.
The ban on religious prayer in public military settings has been in effect since 2023, but the Defence Department doubled down and expanded the restrictions in July of this year.
A chaplain who utters a traditional prayer to God will be in violation. As will any military personnel who sing hymns traditionally sung on Remembrance Day, including “The Lord’s My Shepherd.” One wonders what the soldiers, airmen, seamen, and merchant seamen who fell in Canada’s wars would think about that—the vast majority of whom were Christian.
Forgetting God is the mandate this Remembrance Day.
Indeed, this administrative overreach remarkably united Canada’s disparate religious bodies. Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and Islamic groups jointly condemned the move, viewing the policy as a blunt instrument of state erasure.
Rather than take ownership of a radical political agenda, military brass claim they are simply aligning policy with the Supreme Court of Canada’s 2015 Mouvement laïque québécois v. Saguenay ruling. That case involved an atheist who objected to an explicitly Catholic prayer leading a Quebec municipal council meeting.
The Supreme Court rejected the municipality’s argument that dissenters could simply arrive late, ruling that such opt-out policies publicly stigmatized non-participants. Ultimately, the top court unanimously ruled the municipal policy unconstitutional because it violated freedom of conscience.
By opting for the most extreme risk-averse interpretation of that ruling, National Defence bureaucrats ignored creative ways to balance the spiritual needs of Canadian Forces’ members with the text of the law.
This total ban prioritizes the single complainant who objects to any religious language, forcing the beliefs, history, culture, and comfort of everyone else to take a back seat.
Dr. Benjamin Berger, a leading Canadian constitutional scholar and author of “Law’s Religion,” argues that the military’s version of neutrality imposes its own exclusionary culture rather than providing a neutral blank canvas. Canada traditionally embraces a model of pluralism that respects multiple expressions in the public square. The new military policy enforces erasure, not accommodation.
Many chaplains complain the directive turns them into state bureaucrats dispensing platitudes divorced from their true beliefs, regardless of official assurances protecting private voluntary chaplaincy.
The Servatius v. Alberni School District No. 70 ruling offers vital insight into how Canada can balance these issues. In that case, the British Columbia Supreme Court ruled that a public school did not violate the rights of an evangelical Christian woman during a classroom cultural demonstration—the event involved a local indigenous smudging ceremony and a brief prayer by a guest hoop dancer.
The mere presence of the spiritual activity violated no rights because the school compelled no one to believe anything. The lawyers for the Christian mother drew heavily on the Saguenay ruling to argue for total secular erasure. The B.C. Court of Appeal upheld the decision, giving the Supreme Court of Canada an explicit blueprint for handling pluralism.
Scholars offer alternative frameworks that respect the court ruling while maintaining authentic faith expressions. Dr. Andrew Bennett, the former Canadian Ambassador for Religious Freedom, promotes a multi-faith rotational system where various traditions, including humanists, offer short invocations during major events.
Chaplains could use broadly inclusive faith language that also recognizes those who lack faith, rather than relying on a strict sectarian secularist framework. Alternatively, the military could host two separate ceremonial tracks—one with faith language and one without—and require members to opt in.
These scholars remind Canadians that the country lacks a historical tradition of radical secularization that mandates scrubbing faith from all public life (Quebec’s unique laicité via Bill 21 remains an anomaly in the broader Canadian experience). The new policy is also entirely alien to a military where many historic regiments maintain religious mottos, crests, and symbols. For instance, the Quebec Regiment (Les Voltigeurs de Québec) displays the Latin motto “Deus Nobiscum Quis Contra,” which translates to “If God is with us, who can be against us?”
David McGuinty, the Minister of National Defence, should be alert to the damage this new decree causes before Canadians once again attend a hollow ceremony on a hallowed day.
A top-down enforcement of secularism does not represent Canadian pluralism, and the minister should rescind this policy immediately before it breaks the trust of many who serve.

Who would do this to a fallen soldier's Remembrance Day banner?
How low can you go?
In New Hamburg, Ont., the answer is... pretty darn low.
Low enough to climb on a trash can at two in the morning and spray-paint a banner honouring a Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan.
Private Tyler Todd was killed by an IED in 2010. Ahead of Remembrance Day, the local Legion hung his banner in a place of honour at the main intersection downtown, one of 281 banners across New Hamburg, Plattsville and Wellesley. On October 24, two men caught on security video decided his was the one to deface.
I drove to Legion Branch 532 to ask the obvious question: who in a town of 15,000 has a problem with remembering our fallen?
And this isn't the first time this year. Back in August, someone scrawled graffiti on the New Hamburg cenotaph: the names of NDP Leader Avi Lewis, Naomi Klein and Hasan Piker, plus the initials "D.S.A."
I couldn't tell you what American socialists have to do with a small-town Canadian war memorial.
Bob Neubauer, the Legion's veterans service officer, has been selling poppies for 35 years. He told me the paint won't come off, and that he can barely make out what the vandals were trying to write.
Lest we forget? In New Hamburg, somebody is working awfully hard to make sure we do.

1. Democrats seize both chambers of Congress

Projected Democratic Senate gains include Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina. The party also flipped more than two dozen House districts and several governorships. Inflation, fuel prices and the Iran war weighed heavily on Republican candidates. www.investing.com
Verification note: Some individual contests and final seat totals remain subject to late ballots, recounts or challenges. AP and Reuters nevertheless project Democratic control of both chambers.
Why it matters to Dan: Trump now faces a hostile Congress for his final two years. Democrats can block legislation and nominees, launch investigations and intensify scrutiny of tariffs, military policy and AI development. They cannot, by themselves, cancel every tariff or terminate operations conducted through presidential authority.
Liberals will understandably interpret the result as a rejection of Trump’s governing record. Conservatives should take the scale of the losses seriously rather than blaming only turnout or media coverage. Losing places such as Texas and Kansas is less a warning bell than the entire fire department arriving.
For Ontario, congressional opposition to Trump’s tariffs might help Canadian manufacturers, although political gridlock could complicate the emerging Canada–U.S. agreement.
2. Washington drops major demands in negotiations with Canada
Facts: Trump said on November 3 that a Canada–U.S. agreement was close. Prime Minister Mark Carney was more cautious but confirmed that Washington had withdrawn several previous demands.
Most significantly, the United States reportedly abandoned its attempt to obtain final approval over Canada’s future trade agreements. Carney said America is now asking for less and offering more, although important issues remain unresolved. ca.marketscreener.com
Unconfirmed: Neither government has released completed text, tariff schedules, an implementation date or agreed financing for Trump’s proposed Keystone XL revival.
Why it matters to Dan: Removing Washington’s proposed veto over Canadian trade policy is a meaningful sovereignty gain. Ontario’s auto, steel and manufacturing sectors could benefit greatly if the final agreement also removes tariffs and restores predictable supply chains.
Carney’s supporters will argue that resisting American pressure while pursuing alternative markets improved Canada’s negotiating position. That may be true, but the conservative test remains written results: reciprocal tariff relief, preserved Canadian authority and infrastructure that makes economic sense without quietly presenting taxpayers with the invoice.
3. Oil retreats, but Gulf fuel supplies remain impaired
Facts: Brent crude fell approximately 1.4% to US$102.11 per barrel on November 4 after Democrats captured Congress and Trump said he had no immediate plans for another strike on Iran.
Gulf exports of crude, condensate and refined products recovered to approximately 17.1 million barrels per day in October, but remained below pre-war levels. Why it matters to Dan: A lower crude price does not automatically produce cheaper diesel, fertilizer or Ontario freight. Refining constraints, reduced product exports and marine-insurance costs can keep transportation and grocery prices elevated long after the headline oil benchmark turns downward.
Maintain sensible rotating reserves of fuel, food and accessible cash without panic buying. A president postponing an attack affects market sentiment; tankers moving safely for several consecutive weeks would constitute stronger evidence.
Prediction: Canadian gasoline could ease before diesel and freight costs. Energy markets will remain volatile until negotiations produce enforceable terms and shipping traffic genuinely normalizes.
4. Supreme Court weighs Catholic preschool’s religious-liberty claim
Facts: The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on November 3 in St. Mary Catholic Parish v. Roy. The case concerns whether Colorado may exclude Catholic preschools from its universal-preschool program because their admissions policies conflict with the program’s nondiscrimination rules.
The Catholic institutions and Trump administration argue that exclusion burdens religious exercise. Canadian law differs, but the practical warning travels well: churches, schools and ministries should understand every condition before accepting public funding. Cheques from Caesar are seldom issued without terms and conditions.
5. Resistance to AI data centres becomes an electoral force
Facts: Democratic gubernatorial candidates who supported tighter data-centre restrictions or temporary construction moratoriums won major races in Texas and Georgia on November 3.
Community concerns include electricity and water consumption, noise, higher utility bills, public subsidies and limited permanent employment. Why it matters to Dan: AI infrastructure has become a household-cost and local-control issue rather than an obscure technology debate. Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan are courting similarly enormous projects and will confront the same questions about electricity generation, transmission, water and who pays for new capacity.
Environmental groups will emphasize resource consumption and corporate accountability. Conservatives should also recognize legitimate objections to subsidies, involuntary land-use changes and shifting infrastructure costs onto families. Requiring hyperscalers to finance the power and connections they consume is not anti-technology; it is what capitalism looks like after someone remembers to send Big Tech its own hydro bill.
For your media work, the message is equally practical: prioritize AI tools that produce measurable savings, protect client assets and improve workflows. The age of buying technology merely because the demonstration contained glowing blue graphics may finally be approaching retirement.
