Massachusetts parents sue after high schooler was punished for using AI on history paper

Massachusetts parents Jennifer and Dale Harris are upset that their son was punished for plagiarism when he used AI to help write his history paper. So much so, they're suing the school for punishing their son.


Jennifer, a writer, and her husband, Dale, a schoolteacher, are well aware of the debate of AI. Their lawsuit said that their son only used AI as a tool to do research, not to write the paper.

If he only used the AI for research, how could the teachers have possibly known he used AI for his paper?

 

It's a mystery.

Regardless, the parents are big mad — not at their son for messing up, but at the school for jeopardizing his chances at joining the Honors Society and being accepted into an Ivy League school.

'He got a perfect score on the ACTs and he's looking to go to Stanford, MIT, or some of the top schools,' Jennifer added. 'He's missed the opportunity already for rolling admissions.'

 

To be fair, they may actually have a case here.

The school did not have any AI policies on its books when young Master Harris consulted the predictive software for his history paper.

 

The Harris family said that the Hingham High School handbook did not mention the use of AI until this incident with their son, and that language regarding AI was only added to the handbook this year.

'They essentially punished him for a rule that doesn't exist,' Jennifer said.

Will their complaint stand up in court?

 

Maybe, but even if they win, it won't erase their child's mistake.

However, it's not all bad news. I mean, a lot of state schools are competitive with Ivy League schools these days.

Unfortunately for this kid they'll still expel you if you use AI to write your papers.

Boeing drops DEI:

Big Tech has had to learn – ‘The Hard Way’!

You mean there are better criteria?  like skill?

 

Boeing has reportedly dismantled its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) department and the vice president in charge has resigned, as the struggling company moves forward with a major restructuring, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.  

DEI refers to measures aimed at ensuring equal representation for people of every race, gender, or disability status. 


Boeing, whose workforce has historically been predominantly white and male, had previously pledged to hire more people from minority groups and increase overall Black employment by 20% before 2025.  

 

According to Bloomberg’s sources, the company’s diversity staff is now set to be reassigned to new positions. Sara Lian Bowen, one of Boeing’s vice presidents who led the DEI department, has also left the company.

The dismantling of Boeing’s DEI team comes as major corporations across the US face scrutiny over what critics have described as “woke” discriminatory hiring practices directed against white men. 

 

Last month, anti-DEI activist Robby Starbuck, who has pressured Toyota and Harley-Davidson to scale back their diversity programs, said he had reached out to Boeing’s new CEO Kelly Ortberg, warning her he was considering an online campaign against the aircraft maker’s DEI initiatives. 

 

 The iconic US bike maker has dropped its policies after pressure from critics who previously accused it of going “totally woke”


In response, Boeing maintained that it was committed to creating an “inclusive environment” while prohibiting discriminatory hiring practices and maintaining a “merit-based performance system” aimed at “equality of opportunity, not of outcomes.” 

 

Ortberg has launched a major overhaul of Boeing’s operations in an effort to cut huge financial losses. The embattled aviation giant has been under fire in recent years due to flaws discovered in its aircraft, leading to safety concerns and investigations. It has also been facing a prolonged worker’s strike over insufficient wage increases. 

The restructuring has included trimming the company’s executive ranks as part of a broader effort to reduce the workforce by about 10%, or roughly 17,000 positions.  

 

“Our business is in a difficult position, and it is hard to overstate the challenges we face together,” Ortberg told employees in a memo last month. “Restoring our company requires tough decisions and we will have to make structural changes to ensure we can stay competitive and deliver for our customers over the long term,” she added.
