Canada’s “International Solidarity” Network

How Unions, Activist NGOs, and Foreign-Policy Groups Coordinate Ideological Influence — From Ottawa to London, Ontario

Canadians are often told that international “solidarity” movements are grassroots, humanitarian, and detached from domestic politics. 


In practice, many of these movements are highly coordinated ideological networks, embedded within Canadian unions, activist NGOs, academic institutions, and political parties—most notably the NDP.

These networks do not merely comment on foreign affairs. They mobilize, organize, and apply political pressure, shaping both Canada’s foreign policy narrative and domestic civic life.


This article examines how Canadian unions, foreign-policy institutes, and activist organizations operate in coordinated solidarity with pro-Marxist and anti-Western movements, using Venezuela and Latin America as a case study—before showing how these same networks are operationalized locally in London, Ontario.

At the centre of this ecosystem are organizations such as Common Frontiers and the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute (CFPI), working in tandem with organized labour, activist academics, and international movements.


Canadian Unions and the Infrastructure of Ideological Solidarity

Canadian unions—particularly the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE)—have openly documented their participation in international solidarity efforts aligned with anti-capitalist, anti-Western, and socialist movements across Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.


In CUPE’s Work on International Solidarity (2005–2006), the union outlines:

  • ·        Participation in People’s Summits of the Americas

  • ·        Formal partnerships with Common Frontiers

  • ·        Engagement with Venezuelan public-sector unions

  • ·        Coordination with global justice and “anti-imperialist” coalitions

  • ·        Advocacy through UN bodies, WTO protests, and international campaigns


These activities are not alleged; they are explicitly described and celebrated in CUPE’s own materials, including documented appearances alongside representatives of Venezuela’s public water authorities and socialist movements.


 

This establishes a critical baseline: Canadian union resources, legitimacy, and organizational reach are being used to support foreign ideological movements, often without meaningful consent from members or the broader public.


Common Frontiers: Coordinating Resistance to Western Economic Models

Common Frontiers describes itself as a multi-sector working group opposing economic integration in the Americas. In practice, it functions as a coordination hub linking:

  • ·        Canadian unions

  • ·        Activist NGOs

  • ·        Anti-capitalist academics

  • ·        International socialist and “anti-imperialist” movements

 

CUPE explicitly identifies itself as an active member of Common Frontiers and, through it, the Hemispheric Social Alliance—a coalition formed to oppose Western trade agreements and promote alternative economic systems.



 




This is not a neutral policy debate. It is organized resistance to liberal democratic and market-based systems, framed as solidarity.






The Canadian Foreign Policy Institute: Activism Framed as Expertise

The Canadian Foreign Policy Institute (CFPI) presents itself as an alternative foreign-policy voice. Its advisory structure and programming, however, reveal a consistent ideological orientation.


Key figures associated with CFPI include:

  • ·        Yves Engler — a vocal critic of NATO and Western liberal democracy

  • ·        Tamara Lorincz — a long-time anti-NATO organizer

  • ·        David Heap — deeply embedded in both national and local activist networks


 



























CFPI does not operate as a traditional think tank. It hosts activist gatherings, builds coalitions, and amplifies campaigns under the banner of “peace,” “human rights,” and “internationalism.”


“International Solidarity Now”: Coalition-Building, Not Neutral Dialogue

CFPI’s event “International Solidarity Now” illustrates how activism is reframed as policy engagement.


Participating organizations included dozens of activist groups, among them:

  • ·        MiningWatch Canada

  • ·        World Beyond War Canada

  • ·        Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East

  • ·        Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network


Samidoun has been designated as a terrorist organization by multiple allied governments internationally, yet appears openly within CFPI-aligned programming. This demonstrates how extremist associations are normalized through coalition-based legitimacy.


This is not a passive discussion—it is a strategic mobilization.

From Global Ideology to Local Action: London, Ontario

These networks do not exist only at the national or international level. They are operationalized locally, including here in London, Ontario, through a small group of highly interconnected organizations and individuals.


Crucially, these organizations do not serve the working, tax-paying citizens of London. Their missions, materials, and actions show that they primarily serve international activist causes, often rooted in the Global South and framed through anti-capitalist ideology.


This helps explain why:

  • ·        Local dissent is increasingly treated as a moral failure

  • ·        Citizens who question these movements are dismissed or marginalized

  • ·        Civic and institutional spaces are used for political mobilization rather than democratic engagement


The Local Nexus: David Heap and Organizational Overlap

A clear example of this local consolidation is David Heap, whose involvement spans nearly every major international solidarity organization operating in London.


Heap has been publicly associated with or has worked alongside:

  • ·        Latin American Canadian Solidarity Association (LACASA)

  • ·        Council of Canadians

  • ·        London & District Labour Council

  • ·        People for Peace London

  • ·        No One Is Illegal

  • ·        Canadian Foreign Policy Institute (as an advisor, not merely a participant)


 

 













Heap has also been a visible leader in anti-Israel demonstrations at Western University, including campaigns demanding divestment and institutional political alignment with foreign conflicts.


This is not incidental involvement. It reflects a concentrated activist infrastructure, where the same individuals and organizations reappear across labour, academic, media, and protest spaces.


LACASA and the Ideological Framing of “Justice”

Materials circulated by LACASA and affiliated writers frame Indigenous struggles, climate activism, and economic grievances as components of a global revolutionary movement opposing capitalism and Western democratic systems.


Their own published conclusions assert that:

  • ·        Climate justice is inseparable from social and economic justice

  • ·        Land must be reclaimed from systems “run for the profits of a few”

  • ·        Communities must organize for political struggle rather than civic compromise








 


These are explicit ideological positions, not neutral humanitarian advocacy.




Why This Produces Division — Not Community

When activism is embedded within institutions that claim neutrality, democratic balance collapses.

Local residents—workers, families, small business owners, taxpayers—are not the constituency of these movements. Questioning them is treated as obstruction rather than participation.


This dynamic explains:

  • ·        Why disagreement is framed as harm

  • ·        Why debate is replaced with protest

  • ·        Why institutions are pressured to take ideological positions


Conclusion: Transparency Is a Civic Necessity

What is happening in London is not accidental. It is the local expression of a coordinated ideological network connecting:

  • ·        Canadian unions

  • ·        Activist NGOs

  • ·        Foreign-policy institutes

  • ·        Academic and media platforms

  • ·        Municipal and institutional spaces


Understanding these connections is not extremism.Asking questions is not intolerance.Transparency is essential to democracy.

Citizens cannot meaningfully participate in civic life if activism is embedded within institutions that claim neutrality while advancing global ideological agendas.

TRUMP: 

Renee Good's Autopsy sheds new light on the Minnesota ICE-involved shooting

Tragedy struck in Minneapolis when a mother of three lost her life in a violent confrontation with federal authorities earlier this month.

Renee Good, a 37-year-old protester, was fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The incident occurred after Good allegedly attempted to drive over Ross while maneuvering her SUV. Her death has triggered widespread protests across the United States and deepened the rift between local officials and the Trump administration.


The shooting unfolded as Ross approached Good’s vehicle, which was stopped across the street, and positioned himself in front of it. As Good tried to drive away, Ross opened fire through the windshield and driver’s side window, striking her four times in the chest, head, and arm. Her car sped off before crashing into a phone pole.


Grim Details of Good’s Injuries Emerge

Medics found Good unresponsive in her SUV, her face covered in blood, with an inconsistent pulse and blood gushing from her left ear, according to newly released autopsy information. Despite desperate efforts, including moving her to a sidewalk amid rising tensions with ICE agents and bystanders, CPR was halted 45 minutes after they arrived at around 10:30 a.m., as the U.S. Sun reports.


Ross, the ICE agent involved, sustained internal bleeding in the incident but has since been released from the hospital. The aftermath saw immediate backlash, with state and local officials demanding charges against him.

The incident has sparked fierce debate over federal enforcement tactics and the use of lethal force. Supporters of ICE argue that agents face dangerous situations while enforcing immigration laws..


Protests Erupt After Fatal Shooting

Protests have swept the nation following Good’s death, with many decrying what they see as overreach by federal authorities. Tensions in Minneapolis boiled over further this week after another shooting involving an immigration agent and a Venezuelan migrant.


Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the agent’s actions, stating, “Ross, who suffered internal bleeding, acted in self-defence when he opened fire.”

President Trump also weighed in, asserting, “Good behaved horribly, claiming she ran the ICE agent over.” Such a blunt framing dismisses the complexity of a split-second decision that left three children without a parent.


Local Leaders Clash with Federal Stance

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey didn’t hold back, expressing fury at the federal claim of self-defence and urging ICE to leave the city. His call for calm amid the storm of protests highlights a city on edge, desperate for resolution but caught in a political tug-of-war.


The broader context of immigration enforcement looms large over this tragedy. Federal efforts to conduct raids have met resistance from local leaders who see them as divisive, while the Trump administration insists on upholding the rule of law.

Threats from Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act to curb protests blocking ICE operations signal a hardening stance from Washington.


Balancing Law Enforcement and Public Trust

What’s clear is that Good’s death is a heartbreaking loss for those in her life, and the pain of her family—three children now without a mother—cannot be ignored. The challenge lies in finding a path forward that respects both the rule of law and the human cost of enforcement.


This incident, and the subsequent shooting of a migrant in Minneapolis, demand a serious look at how these encounters are handled.

As protests continue, the divide between local and federal priorities grows starker. State officials push for accountability, while the White House doubles down on supporting ICE. The nation watches, waiting for answers in a case that’s anything but black-and-white.

How Xi Jinping became China's most Powerful Leader since Mao Zedong:


The rise of Xi Jinping, explained.

Xi Jinping, president of China and general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party since 2012, is one of the most powerful political figures in the world.

 

By initiating an unprecedented third term as China’s leader in October 2022, Xi has signalled that he may plan to remain in power for life, making him the first Chinese leader since Mao Zedong to hold unchecked power over the People’s Republic of China. But Xi’s connection to Mao goes deeper than a shared outlook that emphasizes unifying the party around a single leader.

 

When Xi was just a young boy, his family, who had held elite party status thanks to his father’s pivotal role in Mao's “Long March” in 1935, was denounced during Mao’s Cultural Revolution, a chaotic decade of purges and persecution that saw even Mao’s closest allies removed from power.

 

During this time, a teenage Xi was forced to work hard labour in the countryside outside of Beijing, and his father was imprisoned. Xi’s subsequent rise after Mao died in 1976 was a methodical process in using his restored elite status as leverage to gain prominent party positions in rural provinces around China, culminating in his promotion to the all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in 2007. From there, Xi pulled from Mao’s playbook: purging his political rivals and promoting those with whom he shared close personal ties.

 

This process undid the work of Mao’s successor, Deng Xiaoping, to prevent the consolidation of power around a single leader in China. By the time his third term began in October 2022, Xi had reshaped the party and Chinese military leadership to be fully packed with Xi loyalists. And even in the face of social upheaval surrounding his failed Zero Covid policy, Xi has shown no sign of giving up any of the power he has consolidated since taking over as leader of the country.

The EU has the worst migrants!

In September last year, the French statistics agency INSEE revealed that 64 percent of violent robberies, physical and sexual violence on public transport in Paris are committed by foreigners, with 43 percent of this number being North African, who represent only 3.4 percent of the population.


Similarly, in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, foreigners are responsible for 62 percent of all crimes in the German state on public transport, despite being only 16 percent of the population, according to data published following an inquiry for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) state lawmakers in June last year.


Data from November 2024 showed that across wider Germany, foreigners commit 59 percent of all sexual crimes in trains and at train stations.

Alternative for Germany (AfD) MP Martin Hess recently warned, “Train stations, once places of mobility and peaceful encounters, are increasingly becoming no-go areas,” after it had been revealed that the number of violent crimes at Berlin’s central station tripled between 2019 and 2024.


In recent weeks, railway employees and their unions in Italy have expressed concerns about welfare following several high-profile attacks against staff, including the fatal stabbing of a 34-year-old train conductor on Jan. 5 outside Bologna’s main railway station by a migrant.

‘WOKE’ Star Trek... HUGE $Disappointment


The latest addition to the sci-fi franchise, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, is seriously dividing critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Following the conclusion of Star Trek: Discovery in 2024, Paramount opted to proceed with a direct spinoff centred on Starfleet cadets as they undergo training.

Paramount only hit 1,300 live viewers during the free YouTube premiere of the woke new Star Trek show

Now, following its two-episode premiere on Paramount+ on January 15, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has an 84% score from critics, coupled with a 37% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. At the time of writing, the show has 31 reviews from critics and 100+ ratings from users, so its scores could change as more are added. See how this divide compares to other Star Trek shows below:

Created by Gaia Violo, with Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau acting as showrunners, the new Star Trek show is set in the 32nd century, a far-future era first introduced in Discovery, and follows the first incoming class of Starfleet cadets in more than a hundred years as they mature and prepare for service as officers.


Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's cast includes Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard as the cadets, alongside Holly Hunter, Zoë Steiner, Robert Picardo, Tig Notaro, and Oded Fehr in main roles. In ScreenRant's review of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Gregory Nussen writes, "The kids are just okay in Gaia Violo's school-set comedy-drama... Holly Hunter, Gina Yashere and Robert Picardo lead the way. Just one problem: it's not their show."


Despite its strong Rotten Tomatoes score, critical sentiment is somewhat split on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – praising its optimism, inclusivity, and willingness to try something new despite its uneven execution. Many applaud its hopeful spirit, strong potential, and fresh take on Star Trek's legacy – while others criticize its soapiness, tonal issues, overcrowded alien concepts, and reduced tension – calling it messy but promising.

Large crowds of people lined up around the block outside a pair of packed community halls in central Alberta on Wednesday night to attend town meetings focused on the idea of the province seeking independence from Canada. 


The events were held in Red Deer and Eckville and were organized by the Stay Free Alberta campaign. Attendees could hear more about the campaign for a referendum on independence and also sign a petition pushing for such a referendum.


A common theme among people who showed up at the events was a desire for change.

“I don’t think that we’re heard here in Alberta as they are in the East, and we want to see some change,” said Sara Moberg, who lined up to sign the petition in Red Deer.


The petition was brought forward by Mitch Sylvestre, CEO of the Alberta Prosperity Project. Sylvestre, who spoke to attendees at the event in Eckville, got approval from Elections Alberta in December to start collecting signatures.

Stay Free Alberta has nearly four months to gather close to 178,000 signatures.


Moberg said her motivation was rooted in concern for the future.

“I want to see change for my kids,” she said. “I don’t want them to carry all the debt that’s going to happen if we keep what we have right now. 

“I want my kids to see that I stood for something I believed in.”


Tracy Worthington was also at the Red Deer event. She said she’s hoping Albertans will choose “independence and the ability to govern ourselves without any federal overreach.”

Supporters of Alberta's independence lined up in central Alberta Wednesday night to sign a petition, calling for the province to separate from the rest of Canada. CBC's Lina Elsaadi went to one of the events to chat with attendees.

Brandie Bowman said she is confident the group will reach the required number of signatures.

“The lines are there everywhere, at every event. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small town, a big city or a medium-sized city,” she said.


Bowman also spoke about grievances like being tired of equalization payments, and why she thinks sovereignty feels like a viable option.

“Jobs, homes … the ability to actually develop all of our resources,” she said. “Not just oil and gas, but our agriculture, critical minerals, forestry, … everything is hidden behind red tape.”


Already over 2,000 canvassers

Sylvestre said he is ecstatic about the turnout he has seen since he was able to start collecting signatures.

“All this hall will be full,” Sylvestre told CBC News shortly before the speeches were delivered in Eckville. “They will be lined up around the building to sign. And that's been what we're seeing every night.”


Sylvestre said his campaign already has over 2,000 canvassers and is a “true grassroots movement.”


Sylvan Lake resident Darwin Graff was at the event in Eckville. He said he believes if the campaign is successful in posing its referendum question to Albertans and then they vote to separate from Canada, he thinks Alberta could face some hard times at first. 

“But once that stability is placed back into the province again, I think Alberta is going to thrive,” he said.


“With the oilsands as a staple, we've got other resources as well, that are gonna play a role in that as well.”

The next petition signing events are scheduled for Friday in Okotoks, Drayton Valley and the James River Bridge area. More than 20 such events are planned across the province in the coming weeks.


Last year, Sylvestre applied to have a similar referendum question heard: "Do you agree that the province of Alberta shall become a sovereign country and cease to be a province in Canada?"


That question was later deemed unconstitutional by an Alberta judge. But late last year, the provincial government passed amendments to Bill 14, which allows for citizen initiatives to go ahead even if their constitutionality has not been assessed.


Around the same time, the “Forever Canadian” petition was verified as successful by Elections Alberta, with over 400,000 votes. It asks the opposing question: "Do you agree that Alberta should remain within Canada?"

That petition, launched by former deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk, could trigger a referendum, but he has previously said his goal is to have Premier Danielle Smith ask the petition’s question in the legislature and have MLAs vote on it.


Sylvestre told CBC News that the number of signatories to the petition would not be shared until the end of the collection period.
