When Good is Bad & Bad is Good

“Treating Others as better than yourself”...

When a football player catches the ball and runs to make a touchdown, that's good.  But when it's disqualified by the referee, that's bad.  The player and the referee each has his own truth, but only one counts.  They used to say, "It's not whether you win or lose but how you play the game".  Today we forget the last part because it's only half the truth.  The whole truth is "Whether you win or lose AND how you play the game".  We need Old Testament Rules AND New Testament victory.

 

We are told in the bible to consider the other person as better than yourself.  This does not mean lowering your opinion of yourself, but raising your opinion of a Christian brother or sister.  It does not mean seeing Christ in everyone on the planet, even if they are anti-Christ.  It means, as St. Theresa of Avila understood, letting God use everyone to help you do good, even those who might otherwise seem to be bad for you. 

 

As Job found out after years of suffering and loss, good and bad are relative for us, but absolute for God.  Our ways are not His ways.  They may seem opposite to ours.  Or not.  Our understanding will grow.  What counts is trust and faith, not understanding.  I only have to consider the heroes of my faith to see how quickly man's understanding can change.  St. Francis of Assisi was kicked out of the order he founded.  St. Thomas Aquinas was condemned by his bishop.

 

All of the above was brought home to me recently when I found myself at odds with my doctor.  He called me into his office to give me some correction which I didn't think I needed.  

 

First he told me that he would no longer prescribe Quinine Sulphate pills, which I have been taking to treat muscle spasms for over 20 years.  I originally bought them over the counter.  When prescriptions were required, Dr. Patterson gave them to me (until he closed his practice).  Dr. H said it could damage my liver.  I laughed, "If I were a young man, that might be the case, but at 83, I doubt if there's much time left for me to lose."

 

Then he reprimanded me for going to the walk-in clinic around the corner when he was away on vacation.  I had double pneumonia.  The Clinic said they'd see me within the hour.  I didn't want to take the advice on his answering machine and go to the hospital, where I knew I'd be waiting for hours.  I'd have to take cabs too.  Dr. H reminded me that I signed an agreement when I became his patient to use only doctors he approved of.  I'd have no choice if he were going to remain my doctor.  In a huff, I walked out, telling him I'd have to think about that.

 

I instinctively looked for another doctor.  I was so upset.  I had no peace, especially during my prayer and scripture time. 

 

Then God enlightened me.  My doctor is not a Christian.  I needed to tell him that I not only thought about it, I also prayed about it, and went to a pastor and a priest for advice.  True.  And both told me to show respect for Dr. H., who might have a better treatment for my muscle spasms, one that could restore circulation to my body.  Most importantly, show Dr. H that I do not make rash decisions on my own but follow God's Word.  It's not about what's most convenient for me.  Every experience that could be negative can be turned into positive.  God can turn Bad into Good.  In the words of St. Francis, I should seek not so much to be understood as to understand.

 

I made an appointment this week to see Dr. H on Tuesday.  Now I have peace, regardless of the outcome.  I have faith that God will guide my words to speak for the benefit of both of us.  It's not enough for me to be nice to him just because there's a shortage of doctors and I want to smooth things over.  That's Man's way of doing good and exercising patience.  Self-effort.  How much better it will be to follow God's way and let the Spirit work any way He wants when I go to the doctor's office on Tuesday.  It's not enough to "let it go" but I must "let go and let God".  I am so grateful for having a Christian sister and brother to advise and inform me.  

 

In the Book of Leviticus, there are lots of different sacrifices for different things; from barley for thanksgiving, to a lamb for your sin.  But there's no sacrifice for willful, deliberate perpetual sin, ignoring others when they correct you.  It's the sin of a seared conscience, for which others can never see Christ in us.  I do penance now.  That means I make amends.  It's the real meaning of "Repent and be saved".  I'm just not putting ashes on my face.  (Thankfully, the doctor's office is closed every Wednesday, including Ash Wednesday.)  For Lent, I'm not giving up a bad doctor; I'm giving up my search for a good one.  

 

I have learned that even a good goal is bad if it caters to us instead of God's plans for others.  I wouldn't be surprised if what I offer up to Him will result in Him offering something better back.  Or maybe I will be surprised.  We'll see.  What would Jesus do?  I don't know.  What will Jesus do?  We'll see.  I guess we'll see a lot of things as I go into and out of the dark night of the soul.  I don't want to change, but it's not what I want that's important.

  • · calls to mobilize pressure at City Hall

  • · suggestions of legal action

  • · and repeated insinuations that critics are causing harm simply by speaking


Several residents now say they no longer feel safe attending council meetings.

This is not healthy civic debate.It is coercion through moral slander.


Why This Matters to Every Resident

If agencies can claim that criticism of their policies is an “attack on the vulnerable,” then:

  • · no policy can ever be challenged

  • · no outcomes can ever be questioned

  • · and no elected official can safely dissent


This collapses democratic oversight and replaces it with ideological enforcement.

Worse, it allows agencies receiving public funds to deflect scrutiny while casting good people — including councillors and residents — as morally suspect for demanding accountability.

That cannot continue.

Doctor Palmer, up at Harvard, has cured schizophrenia using the keto diet. There are studies right now that I saw two days ago, where people lose their bipolar diagnosis by changing their diet.

I believe it.  Years ago, I read about mental patients being successfully treated by removing sugars from their diet.  This didn't go down too well with the psychiatrists who prefer pills or psychoanalysis.
