Introduction
There is rarely only one path before a country. Some choices seem simple because they can be stated in a sentence: separate, join another country, replace a system, sweep the old order away. Yet such choices often require a level of public agreement that does not yet exist. Other choices look more complex because they involve institutions, laws, provinces, courts, parties, and staged action. Yet those may be the more practical paths because they can begin incrementally, build support, and prove themselves through use.
That is the challenge facing Canada. The country’s problem is not merely that particular governments make poor decisions. The deeper problem is that too many of the institutions meant to restrain power have become too weak, too dependent, or too easily managed by the same political machinery they are supposed to check. Canada does not need another vague promise of reform. It needs to be reforged: reshaped into a country where power is divided, accountability is real, and Confederation becomes worth preserving.

Across Canada, and especially in regions that feel ignored by Ottawa, there is growing debate over reform, separation, and independence. Even Donald Trump has jumped into the fray by suggesting Canada join the US. True, he may be trolling as he has a penchant for doing that as one of his negotiating techniques.
At its core, Canada does not need another round of wholesale reform. That word carries too much baggage and too little force. Reform suggests adjustment, tinkering, the filing down of sharp edges. What Canada needs is something harder and more practical. It needs to be reforged.
To reforge something is not to discard it. It is to take an existing tool that no longer serves its purpose, heat it, hammer it, reshape it, and return it to useful work. That is the task before Canada. The country still has institutions, laws, courts, elections, Parliament, provincial governments, and a written constitution. On paper, the structure remains. The problem is that too many of those institutions now fail to restrain power in practice.
Canada is not a republic. It is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. The Crown remains the formal source of authority, while government is carried on through Parliament, cabinet, courts, elections, and constitutional conventions. Yet Canada has long operated with many assumptions associated with republican government: public law, representative institutions, constitutional limits, legal rights, and the idea that office-holders are constrained by rules rather than personal will. The problem is not that Canada lacks rules. The problem is that the rules are too easily controlled by the very people they are supposed to restrain.
That is the primary issue. Laws matter only when they bind both the governed and those who govern. Citizens are expected to account for their income, expenditures, licences, taxes, records, and conduct under penalty of law. Government, by contrast, can announce major spending commitments, bury authority in broad budgetary processes, invoke procedural excuses, and rely on party discipline to push matters through Parliament with little meaningful scrutiny. The form of accountability remains, but the substance weakens.
Canada’s parliamentary system now shows its greatest flaw. In theory, Parliament holds cabinet to account. In practice, cabinet usually controls the governing caucus, the governing caucus controls the House, and party discipline suppresses independent judgment. MPs are elected as representatives of their constituents, but too often function as voting units for party headquarters. The prime minister and cabinet do not merely propose policy; they dominate the machinery that turns policy into law.
The United States has its own serious problems, but one feature of its design remains worth studying: power was deliberately divided. Executive, legislative, and judicial authority are separated. The legislature itself is divided into two houses. Each institution has its own source of legitimacy and its own ability to restrain the others. That design does not guarantee virtue. Laws only work when those entrusted with them are willing to obey the law. But divided power makes abuse harder. It creates friction, and friction is often liberty’s first line of defence.
Canada has much less friction. The executive and legislative branches are fused. The Senate exists, but because senators are appointed rather than elected or provincially mandated, it lacks the democratic legitimacy needed to serve as a strong check on central power. The courts can restrain government, but rights under the Charter are subject to “reasonable limits,” and some rights can be overridden by the notwithstanding clause. These mechanisms may have been designed as political compromises, but they also mean that Canadians too often possess rights that can be narrowed, overridden, or made conditional.
A reforged Canada would begin with the principle that no institution should be trusted to police itself. Power must be divided, recorded, reviewable, and removable.
The first task is to separate executive power from legislative obedience. Canada need not copy the United States wholesale, but it must reduce the ability of a prime minister to dominate Parliament through party machinery. One model would be a directly elected executive with fixed terms.
Another would retain parliamentary government but require stronger independence for MPs, clearer limits on whipped votes, and a cabinet that depends on Parliament rather than commanding it. The precise model can be debated. The objective cannot: Parliament must become a real check on cabinet again.
The House of Commons must also be reforged. MPs should answer first to the people who elect them. Party leaders should not be able to control political life through nominations, expulsions, funding access, inducements, and ballot labels. Local riding associations should have real rights. Candidate selection should be transparent, locally rooted, and protected from arbitrary veto by central party offices. Recall should exist for serious breaches of public trust. Free votes should be the norm except on true matters of confidence. If MPs cannot vote against their own party when conscience, evidence, or constituency interest requires it, then representation has become theatre.
The Senate, too, must be reforged. Canada is too geographically large and regionally different to be governed as if one central political machine can understand or represent the whole country. The current Senate does not solve this because appointment by Ottawa cannot provide independent regional legitimacy. A reforged Senate could be elected by province, chosen by provincial legislatures, or created through another publicly accountable provincial process. The key is that it must represent regions and provinces as a counterweight to the central government. It should not be a retirement chamber, a patronage chamber, or a second platform for national party control.
Civil liberties must be hardened. Freedom of expression, conscience, religion, peaceful assembly, due process, property, and equal treatment before the law should not be easy prey for temporary political fashion. Section 1 of the Charter should be narrowed where core political rights are involved. The notwithstanding clause should either be unavailable for core liberties or require direct public approval before use. Rights that government can override are not rights in the full meaning of the word.
Public finance must also be reforged. Parliament’s control of money is one of the oldest principles of representative government, yet modern governments often blur that control through large budget bills, broad appropriations, and post-announcement funding mechanisms. Major spending commitments should require standalone recorded votes. Borrowed money should require clear disclosure of amount, authority, purpose, repayment assumptions, and effect on debt servicing. Foreign aid, military aid, bailouts, emergency programmes, and large transfers should not be hidden in procedural fog. If citizens must account for their finances, government must do the same.
Political parties are central to the problem. Canada’s parties are state-recognised gateways to public power. They receive legal privileges, ballot advantages, tax-credit-supported fundraising benefits, reimbursement systems, media recognition, and debate access. Yet their internal structures are often opaque, leader-centred, and oligarchic – ruled by a few. Some present themselves as democratic while central offices control nominations, rules, finances, leadership access, and discipline.
A reforged Canada would require every registered party to publish its constitution, nomination rules, leadership rules, membership rights, riding association rules, appeal procedures, financial controls, and governance structure. No hidden constitutions. No fake member control. No leader-owned parties masquerading as national movements. If a party wants public recognition, it must meet public standards.
Law enforcement and public integrity also require a reforge. The RCMP cannot be both the senior federal police body and structurally dependent on cabinet in matters involving senior political actors. At the same time, no police force should become a state within the state. The answer is not police supremacy. The answer is independent operation within narrow jurisdiction and hard oversight.
Canada should create an Independent Public Integrity Office with its own investigators, forensic accountants, and prosecutors. Its jurisdiction should cover cabinet ministers, MPs, senators, senior public officials, federal appointees, party officers, major government contractors, and cases involving abuse of public office, obstruction, procurement fraud, electoral corruption, or unlawful political interference. It should not control national security, public-order policing, intelligence, or the military. Its powers should be restrained by courts, warrants, fixed terms, public reporting, and protected but audited funding. Cabinet must not be able to bury investigations. Police must not be able to rule the country. Both dangers must be blocked.
Citizens need direct tools as well. Representative government is necessary, but when representatives are captured by party machines, citizens need constitutional release valves. Canada should consider citizen-initiated referenda, recall elections, mandatory referenda for major constitutional changes, and automatic public approval requirements for laws that restrict core civil liberties. These tools must have serious thresholds to prevent chaos, but they must be real enough to matter. A people that cannot overrule its political class is not sovereign in practice.
Federalism itself must be reconsidered. Canada’s existing provincial map does not always reflect real regional interests. Northern Ontario, the North, Labrador, Vancouver Island, northern Quebec, Atlantic Canada, the Prairies, and other regions often experience government as distant, urban-centred, and inattentive. A reforged Canada should be willing to consider new provinces, stronger regional assemblies, formal regional vetoes, or altered federal-provincial arrangements where existing structures no longer represent actual communities of interest. This would be difficult, but difficulty is not an argument against necessity. Canada’s size and diversity require more representation, not more centralization.
The hardest question is how this could happen. It will not happen by asking the existing cartel to surrender power. It will not happen through vague slogans. It would require a movement, and likely a new party, built on the same framework it proposes for the country. That party must be the prototype. It must have published rules, local control, audited finances, member rights, leadership recall, transparent nominations, independent dispute resolution, and limits on the leader. A secretive, leader-centred party cannot credibly sell decentralised government. A party oligarchy cannot credibly promise national accountability.
From there, the movement would need provincial partners, not branch offices controlled from Ottawa. Canada can only be reforged through federal and provincial legitimacy together. Some changes can be made by ordinary legislation: party transparency, spending votes, public-integrity enforcement, whistleblower protection, procurement disclosure, and stronger parliamentary procedures. Other changes require provincial agreement. The deepest changes, including Senate redesign, stronger rights protection, and altered regional structures, would require constitutional negotiation.
That means the project must be staged. First, build the model. Second, win public trust. Third, secure provincial partners. Fourth, enact what can be enacted immediately. Fifth, seek a constitutional mandate for the rest. The objective should not be separation dressed up as constitutional theory. The objective should be to preserve Canadian independence by making Confederation worth preserving.
Canada is not beyond saving. But it is beyond tinkering. A country governed through centralised party machines, weak parliamentary checks, soft rights, opaque spending, appointed regional representation, and politically vulnerable enforcement cannot remain strong indefinitely. The existing tool still has good metal in it. But it has bent under pressure and misuse.
It must be reforged.

Importing Hate into Canada
“When you come to Canada,” Mark Carney told newcomers in a speech addressing antisemitism, “you bring your faith, your tradition, your language, your story. You leave behind your wars and your animosities.”
It’s a pleasant, even pleasing fiction for millions of Canadians who imagine that a mythical “blank slate” exists for newcomers. The hard truth is that some peoples’ stories are welded to wars, and many of their traditions are centred on a desire to settle scores.

In Canada, we can see inherited grievances that go beyond mere anti-colonial seething. In 2023, a parade in Brampton, Ont., organized in part by the Khalistani lobby, which wants a Sikh homeland in Punjab, featured a float portraying the 1984 assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, leading to a rebuke from India. And it happened again just this month, with another parade featuring Khalistani flags and glorifying the killing of Gandhi.
The once-mighty Great Britain, currently racked by ethnic and religious violence caused in part by irresponsible mass immigration, is our future if Canada doesn’t abolish its myths about “blank slates.” People do not always forget the past when they get off an airplane.
