Trump's 50% tariffs on Canadian goods take effect after trade talks collapse

President Trump imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian products after last-ditch negotiations fell apart late Friday, and Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to match them dollar for dollar.
The levies kicked in at 12:01 a.m. ET on Saturday, August 22, hitting dozens of Canadian exports including wine, dairy products, hockey sticks, whiskey, vodka, honey, whey protein, molasses, steel, cement, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Oil, gas, and potash were exempted. Within hours, Carney held a news conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, flanked by Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief trade negotiator Janice Charette, to announce that Canada was suspending all trade talks with Washington and would impose retaliatory tariffs on American goods starting September 8.
Both governments blamed the other for the breakdown. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada walked away from terms the two sides had agreed to earlier in the week. Carney said the Trump administration introduced last-minute changes, including shifts to automobile tariff levels, that were unworkable and called into question whether any deal could be trusted.
Greer says Canada made 'new demands' and walked back commitments
Greer laid the collapse squarely at Ottawa's feet. In a statement released late Friday night, he said:
"Tonight, Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week. Despite the U.S. offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market, new demands and walk backs of other commitments by Canada have upended the careful balance reached in the past days."
Greer added that Canada was "continuing to maintain its prolonged retaliation against the United States, including, among other things, flat-out prohibitions on certain American goods and services." He did not specify which prohibitions he meant.
The U.S. Trade Representative's office had posted on X earlier in the week describing what a completed deal would include: "comprehensive market access for all American goods, economic security commitments, digital trade alignment, and many important provisions that will continue to protect our market and American workers, along with our Canadian partners." That framework never made it to a final signature.
Carney accuses Washington of moving the goalposts
Carney told reporters the U.S. side had changed terms at the last minute in ways that would have damaged Canadian industry. He announced he had directed Canada's negotiators to return to Ottawa, saying they had "worked hard, in good faith, to defend the interests of Canadians throughout these negotiations up until the very last minute."
His sharpest line was blunt:
"They asked too much and offered too little."
Carney said the new U.S. tariffs were "designed to hurt us and divide us" but called them "a miscalculation, because Canadians will always take care of each other." He described the Trump administration as one that "uses economic integration as a weapon." Canada's retaliatory tariffs, he said, would focus on steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, targeting roughly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, with more details to come.
A Depression-era law invoked for the first time
Trump imposed the tariffs under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a provision from the Great Depression era that allows the president to levy tariffs up to 50% on goods from countries found to have discriminated against the United States relative to their treatment of other nations. The provision had never been invoked before, meaning there is no judicial precedent for its use. UBS economist Abigail Watt flagged the lack of precedent in a memo shared with ABC News.
That legal untested ground matters. The Supreme Court struck down previous Trump tariff efforts earlier this year, though the specific ruling and its date were not detailed in available reporting. Section 338 operates under a different statutory framework, but whether courts will treat it differently remains an open question.
Unlike previous rounds of tariffs, the new levies would apply to products that comply with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the trade pact Trump himself negotiated during his first term. That distinction makes this round more disruptive to supply chains that had been structured around USMCA rules.
$880 billion in annual trade hangs in the balance
The scale of the U.S.-Canada economic relationship makes this dispute unusually consequential. The two countries exchanged $880 billion worth of goods and services last year, and nearly 72% of Canada's goods exports go to the United States. The affected products represent about 5% of Canada's annual exports to the U.S., but the tariff rate, 50%, is steep enough to price many Canadian goods out of American markets entirely.
The U.S. goods trade deficit with Canada stood at $46.4 billion in 2025. Canada is the second-largest U.S. trade partner. For a country that dependent on American buyers, a 50% tariff wall is not a negotiating inconvenience, it is an economic emergency.
Trump had extended the original tariff deadline by three days, from Wednesday to Saturday, to give negotiators more time. A preliminary deal had been announced on Tuesday, and Trump told reporters he had a "very good conversation" with Carney. But the framework unraveled in the final hours.
Trump: American farmers will pay 'zero' tariffs into Canada
Earlier in the week, Trump framed the expected deal as a major win for U.S. agriculture. Speaking at a White House Rose Garden event on August 20, he said:
"The tariffs will be non-existent for our farmers. Our farmers were paying tremendous tariffs into Canada. And those tariffs are going to be totally eviscerated down to zero."
When asked whether the deal would also reduce tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum entering the U.S., Trump was less definitive: "Well, we're looking at that."
He also floated the possibility of reviving the Keystone XL Pipeline, which was canceled in 2021. "Keystone XL Pipeline, long ago killed by Sleepy Joe Biden, may be awoken from the grave!" Trump wrote in a post earlier in the week. Whether that prospect survives the current breakdown in relations is unclear.

For all the heated rhetoric, both governments left significant gaps in their accounts. Greer referenced Canada's "new demands" and "walk backs" but did not say what they were. Carney cited "last-minute changes" to U.S. terms, including automobile tariff levels, but did not release the specific language or numbers that prompted him to pull out. Both sides blamed the other for abandoning a framework they had supposedly agreed to just days earlier.
Carney said more details on Canada's retaliatory tariffs would come later. He did not say whether Ottawa would be open to returning to the table before the September 8 retaliation date, or what conditions would need to change.
The broader context is worth noting. Trump had already imposed sweeping tariffs on 60 trade partners, including the European Union, in the weeks before this dispute reached its breaking point. The administration has signaled it views tariffs as a primary tool for rebalancing trade relationships, and is willing to use untested legal authorities to do it.
Canada's position is that it will not accept terms that compromise its sovereignty or undermine key industries. "We were not prepared to comprise Canada's sovereignty or undermine our key industries," Carney said on Saturday.
What neither side has answered is the most basic question: if a deal was close enough on Tuesday to announce, what changed so dramatically by Friday night that both governments ended up exactly where they started, only with higher tariffs and no talks scheduled?
When a country that sends 72% of its exports to a single neighbor refuses the terms that neighbor offers, the question is whether Ottawa miscalculated its leverage, or whether Washington asked for something no sovereign government could accept. The answer will show up in the prices American and Canadian consumers pay next month.

The Department of Justice is preparing what officials are calling one of the largest election monitoring operations in the agency’s history, with plans to send approximately 1,000 federal monitors to polling locations across the country during the November midterm elections. The announcement, delivered by Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon, marks a significant escalation in the federal government’s role in overseeing how states conduct their elections, and it comes at a moment when confidence in the integrity of American elections remains a top concern for millions of voters nationwide.
Dhillon disclosed the scale of the operation during an interview on Bloomberg’s “Balance of Power,” where she laid out the administration’s broader approach to election security. She noted plainly that deploying monitors is simply something the Justice Department does as a matter of course, and that this year’s number would likely represent a historic figure for a Republican administration.
The timing is notable. Confidence in the electoral process has been a driving issue for the Trump administration since day one of the second term, and this latest move signals that the Justice Department intends to put real manpower behind its stated commitment to clean, transparent elections. Unlike the vague assurances often offered by federal bureaucracies, this is a concrete, measurable step, and one that voters concerned about ballot integrity should welcome.
According to Dhillon, the monitors will not intervene in the voting process itself. Their role is purely observational, watching to ensure that voting is conducted fairly and in compliance with federal law. That includes monitoring for language access issues, disability access problems, and any indicators of potential voter fraud. The department has stated the goal is to boost public confidence in outcomes, not to influence them.
It is worth remembering that election monitoring is nothing new.
The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has monitored federal elections since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Past administrations of both parties have dispatched federal personnel to polling places. Under the Biden administration, the DOJ sent monitors to 86 jurisdictions during the 2024 presidential election and 64 jurisdictions during the 2022 midterms. In 2020, the department deployed monitors to 44 jurisdictions.
What separates this year’s effort is the sheer scale. A deployment approaching 1,000 monitors would dwarf recent operations and reflects an administration that is taking election integrity seriously rather than treating it as an afterthought. Critics on the left have predictably cried foul, framing the expanded presence as some sort of intimidation tactic. But the facts tell a different story. These monitors operate under the same legal authority and training used by prior administrations, and they are bound to respect state law regarding buffer zones and access.
Dhillon made that point directly, noting that when a state establishes a 150-yard perimeter around polling places, the department will respect it. She also emphasized that federal monitors work in partnership with, not opposition to, state and local election officials, reinforcing rather than undermining the state-run nature of American elections.
The DOJ has already put this framework into action. During the 2026 primary season, the department sent monitors to polling locations in Michigan, including Detroit, Hamtramck, Lansing, and East Lansing. Monitors were also dispatched to three Arizona counties in July, and more recently to primary elections in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and Laramie County, Wyoming. Across the primary season, the DOJ says it has already deployed more than 75 monitors to over 200 polling locations spanning five states, including Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wyoming.
The department has framed this ongoing work as being about transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law, three principles that should be uncontroversial regardless of political affiliation. Yet Democratic officials in some of these states have pushed back. Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes filed a public records request seeking to understand why the department was monitoring three counties during the primary, a request that suggests discomfort with federal scrutiny rather than any genuine legal objection.
It should be noted that pleading for less oversight of elections is an odd position for anyone who claims to care about voter confidence. If elections are being run properly, additional federal eyes on the process should pose no threat to anyone. The only people who should fear increased scrutiny are those who have something to hide.
To hit the ambitious 1,000 monitor target, the department is recruiting volunteers from its own workforce, including personnel from Civil Rights Division and United States Attorney’s Offices around the country. A complete list of jurisdictions receiving monitors is expected to be finalized once the primary season wraps up, giving the department flexibility to respond to emerging concerns as Election Day approaches.
Dhillon indicated that possible target locations could include areas with documented concerns involving language access, disability access, or suspected voter fraud, a sensible, needs-based approach rather than a blanket deployment without justification.
Predictably, the announcement has drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers and left-leaning legal advocacy groups, some of whom have attempted to frame the effort as unprecedented federal overreach. Former acting U.S. attorney Andrew Haden found dead at 48 inside San Diego federal building

Andrew Haden, the 48-year-old former twice-acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California, was found dead this week inside a federal building in downtown San Diego, a loss that colleagues called one of the darkest days in the office's history.
San Diego police responded to the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building on Wednesday after Haden was reported missing. Officers found him dead inside an office at the building, which houses the U.S. Attorney's Office where Haden had worked for 16 years. The department said it dispatched investigators but found no evidence of foul play, Fox News Digital reported.
Sources familiar with the case told the New York Post that Haden died by suicide. The medical examiner's office is investigating. No further details about the circumstances have been released.
A Navy veteran who served San Diego for 16 years
Haden was a California native and a Navy veteran who completed two overseas deployments before turning to the law. He earned his law degree from the University of San Diego and joined the U.S. Attorney's Office in 2010.
Over the next decade and a half, he built a reputation strong enough that he was twice tapped to lead the office on an acting basis, first in 2023 to fill a vacancy, and again in 2025 after President Trump fired Biden appointee Tara McGrath. That second selection put Haden at the helm of one of the busiest federal prosecutor's offices along the southern border.
U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon, who now leads the Southern District of California, issued a statement to Fox News Digital calling Haden's death a devastating blow.
"This is one of the darkest days in our office's history, but there was nothing dark about Andrew Haden's life. He was a beacon of light, full of laughter, friendship, integrity and an unwavering commitment to serving our community. We will honor his life and legacy by carrying his light forward, today and always."
Colleagues on both sides of the courtroom mourned him
Scott C. Carr, executive director of the San Diego County Bar Association, said he was devastated by the news. Carr recalled speaking with Haden during the most recent government shutdown about how the disruption was affecting employees in the office, a conversation that stuck with him because of the concern Haden showed for the people around him.
In a written statement, Carr said:
"Andrew was always friendly with a kind word to say, which makes news of his passing all the more difficult. My thoughts are with his family and his colleagues at the Southern District of California. Our legal community lost a good one."
Defense attorney Jeremy Warren, who had faced off against Haden in court, called the death "a huge blow to the entire federal community in San Diego." Warren noted that despite their courtroom battles, the two remained friends, a fact he said spoke to Haden's character.
The tributes painted a consistent picture: a prosecutor respected not just for competence but for decency, by allies and adversaries alike. Sixteen years in the same office, two stints running it, and not a single detractor quoted in the aftermath.
Key questions remain unanswered
Police have not disclosed who reported Haden missing or how long he had been unaccounted for before officers arrived at the federal building. The San Diego Police Department's statement that "no foul play is suspected" appears to be a preliminary finding; whether a full coroner's inquiry will follow has not been addressed publicly.
It also remains unclear whether Haden held any active role in the U.S. Attorney's Office at the time of his death or had returned to a line-prosecutor position after his second acting stint ended.
What is clear is that a man who spent nearly half his life in public service, first in uniform, then in a courtroom, is gone at 48. The people who worked beside him and the people who squared off against him agree on at least one thing: the Southern District of California is worse off without him.

Man Stumbles Upon Vast Underground City Behind Wall During Home Reno—And Tunnels Go on Forever

Amid the strange fairy chimney stacks of eroded rock that litter the landscape of Cappadocia in central Turkey, little more than an inkling suggests that a sprawling subterranean city lies under the arid ground beneath one’s feet.
For centuries, the inhabitants of the Anatolian plateau have been carving dwellings, monasteries, and troglodyte villages out of the local soft volcanic rock, conjuring what look like scenes from a Tolkien novel today. There’s plenty enough to stir imaginations aboveground, luring tourists to hike and hot-air balloon in Cappadocia; meanwhile, an underground world with hundreds of miles of chambers and passages rests unseen below.
Called Elengubu in ancient times, after its recent rediscovery this cavernous city borrowed the namesake of its overlying district, Derinkuyu, in Nevşehir province. Abandoned centuries ago, the intricate tunnel network of Derinkuyu once offered safety and concealment for those seeking refuge amid persecution.

Yet the city was—and still is—intertwined with stone structures and dwellings overland.
After it was abandoned, and after fading from public knowledge in the early 20th century, Derinkuyu’s accidental rediscovery in 1963 was credited to a home renovation. According to locals, a Turkish man who was expanding his domicile tore down a wall only to discover an abysmal passageway that seemed to go on forever, which led to the underground city’s prompt excavation. This was the first of some 600 entry points found connecting Derinkuyu with structures above.
Gargantuan in size, Derinkuyu spans some 275 square miles, descending 279 feet underground with some 18 levels. Once a bustling sub-terrestrial city, Derinkuyu is beset with living quarters for some 20,000 inhabitants, stables for livestock, wine and oil presses, cellars, chapels, schools, wells, and other amenities. This made the underground metropolis a fully self-sustaining community whose inhabitants could sever themselves from an outside world that was often fraught with danger in times of invasion or occupation.

As for who occupied Derinkuyu over the centuries and who created it, evidence of cave dwellings in Cappadocia dates back to the Upper Paleolithic period. For centuries, the volcanic tuff—rock made of solidified deposits of volcanic ash—allowed excavations with simple metal tools such as shovels and pickaxes.
In its earliest origin, Derinkuyu has been associated with the Hittites in Anatolia, who may have excavated the first few levels in the 15th century B.C. Hittite artifacts discovered inside give weight to that theory.
Then, the Phrygians invaded around 1200 B.C. and came to occupy the city; renowned for their architectural prowess in carving stone in the region, they likely went on to build the bulk of the city’s infrastructure. The Persians and Seljuks probably made further expansions when they came to occupy the territory. However, Derinkuyu swelled to its largest during the Byzantine age when Christians sought refuge from Muslim Arabs during the Arab–Byzantine wars, from 780 to 1180.
A self-contained network, at its height the sanctuary offered refuge to as many as 20,000 inhabitants and would have allowed them to hold out from invaders for months on end without making contact with the outside world. The upper floors of Derinkuyu consist of large dry food storage areas and stables for livestock that would have reduced unseemly smells and toxic gasses while providing living insulation during the colder months for those dwelling below.

A well that is accessible to the village aboveground descends some 180 feet belowground supplying both ventilation and clean water for the entire city. This could have easily been cut off from below to prevent a potentially fatal poisoning of the city’s water supply. Meanwhile, more than 50 ventilation shafts penetrate through to the surface overhead, supplying the city with fresh air from above. The passages were once lit by torches and lamps, and many of the walls and ceilings remain blackened with char today. Access between levels was facilitated by staircases cut into the rock or perilous vertical shafts with handholds and footholds cut into the rock.
In case of invasion, the entrances to each of the city’s levels feature round stone doors weighing some 1,000 pounds, which could have been rolled shut to block out intruders. These were furnished with a central hole through which defenders could spear their attackers. The structure’s innovative defenses are also apparent in the narrow, claustrophobia-inducing passages, which force one to crouch while passing through. It’s believed this hindrance is by design, for it would have forced an assailant to hunch down—assuming a rather vulnerable posture—and raiding parties to travel in single file, handing a clear advantage to the defenders.

Besides fortifications, the city accommodated educational and religious activities. A spacious chapel with a barrel-vaulted ceiling on the second level is believed to have been a religious missionary school with adjacent study rooms. Additionally, a series of vertical stairways between the third and fourth levels leads to a cruciform church on the fifth level.
Derinkuyu is not the only underground city in Cappadocia, though it is believed to be the largest. There are as many as 200 underground cities on the Anatolian plateau, 40 of which descend three or more levels deep. Moreover, a 5-mile-long tunnel connects Derinkuyu with neighboring underground metropolis Kaymalki. It is conceivable that many of these underground cities are accompanied by interconnecting subterranean “highways” to facilitate safe travel between distant habitations.

Although these places gradually fell into disuse, the Cappadocian Greeks continued using them to escape periodic persecution as late as the 20th century.
It wasn’t until the Turkish government eventually had Derinkuyu evacuated in 1923—its inhabitants extradited to Greece en mass—that it was finally abandoned. After its serendipitous rediscovery in 1963 and subsequent opening to the public in 1969, it has been spelunked by thousands, thoroughly explored, and in 1985 added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Today, visitors are welcome to explore the ancient metropolis for a meager 50 Turkish liras ($1.70). With eight levels of the city open to the public, visitors may set foot inside and lay eyes on a mere fraction of this once-bustling subterranean world, though they are advised to do so in the company of an experienced guide.

This is one I recommend based on what's happening right now in Canada and the world; Barry sees the potential for great evil and our potential for great resistance. To hear the vision he had in February play the video from :25 to :50. Try and ignore the "jolts" he feels. (They were quite common during the Great Awakening Revivals of the 19th century.)
BTW - What's with the excess drama in the title? Is it YouTube or the person reposting the video? I mean, come on. The title on this video is ridiculous, "God told me it's coming tonight - Seek Shelter and do not go outside!" LOL. That's not the title of the original video. The exaggerated title turns me off, even though Barry Wunsch is giving out some intense information.
Also, whoever copied and reposted the original interview cut out details of the Chinese troops in remote parts of Canada. Up to half a million. Seriously. It's legal because we passed a law allowing China to supply it's own "security" around the mines and factories they own in Canada. (I saw the original interview but can't find it now.) This is a big contributing reason for Trump's impatience with Canada.
