An electronics technician from a Philadelphia suburb, who never expected to swap his 9-to-5 for living off-grid in the wilderness, has spent 43 years homesteading in the United States and Canada with his wife.
Together, they’ve built three homes in remote locations and have generated enough energy, food, and money to see them through retirement. They’ve even penned some of the most-sought-after books on how to survive off-the-grid and thrive in modern day America: “Off Grid and Free: My Path to the Wilderness“ and ”The Self-Sufficient Backyard: For the Independent Homesteaders.”
Ron Melchiore, 67, confided in his supervisor as a young man in the workforce who was unhappy with his job, and received some interesting advice.
“He suggested homesteading,” Mr. Melchiore told The Epoch Times. “I researched it, and it wasn’t too long after that I started looking into a piece of land and decided I was going to be a homesteader.
“I’m an adventurous guy. I wanted to pursue something that made more sense to me: self-reliance, being able to provide my own electricity and food, and being able to enjoy life, as opposed to working it away.”

The Beginning
Mr. Melchiore bought his first homesteading plot in Maine in 1979 and made it his home for 20 years. Having grown up in the suburbs, he had to acquire skills such as gardening, food preservation, building, plumbing, energy generation, and animal care.

“I made my mistakes but I learned from them,” he said.
He met his wife, Johanna Melchiore, 64, on a trip back to Philadelphia. She shared his dream of off-the-grid living, and the pair married in 1987.

“Off-grid really means that we’re providing our own power, our own water, and septic,” Mr. Melchiore said. “We do not have to rely on any other entity to provide the things that most people count on each day. ... we provide all our vegetables and we provide pretty much all our fruits, but there’s still a reliance on meat.”
After two decades in Maine, the Melchiores had gained the experience and confidence to face a new challenge. It was while camping by a lake, fishing and canoeing, that they decided to relocate to a lakeside plot. Unable to afford what they wanted in the United States, they looked to Canada.
The Second Homestead
“We found a remote lake in northern Saskatchewan [Canada], where you had to fly in and out on a float plane, and we decided we would call that home,” said Mr. Melchiore, who emigrated with his wife in 1999. Today, the couple are Canadian citizens.

“We experienced temperatures [of minus] 57 degrees Fahrenheit,” Mr. Melchiore said. “We went out there in April. We put up a tent, and even though it was still going below zero Fahrenheit, we lived in the tent. ... we flew in plane load after plane load of all the building materials, and as soon as it warmed up, we got started [building our home].”
Their Maine home had been “strong and rugged,” but the couple improved the insulation for their new home against severe weather by building 12-inch-thick walls. They augmented their solar panel system, installed a wind turbine, planted a bigger garden, and tapped the lake to secure a store of safe water.
“It was a real privilege to call the wilderness home,” Mr. Melchiore said. “Basically, Johanna and myself built the place. I did have my brother come up ... and help us with some of the harder things, but, for the most part, we had the structure built so that we could move in sometime in August or September.”

While living in Saskatchewan, the Melchiores routinely went six months at a time without seeing another human. Their only link to the outside world was a satellite dish, enabling them to email family and friends. They took bi-annual float plane rides to stock up on essential non-perishable foods and DIY items, collect mail, and visit the doctor and dentist.
“In order to give us the best chance of survival, we both took basic first aid courses,” Mr. Melchiore said. “I also went through an EMT [emergency medical technician] course and a first responder course. We had a serious first aid kit including antibiotics and other meds.
“We were 100 miles out in the wilderness. It was just really a pinprick on the Earth’s surface, so that float plane better know where it was going or it’s going to pass us by.
“We were truly two people alone in the world, that’s how it felt to us.”
While people were nowhere to be seen from the Melchiores’ homestead in Saskatchewan, nature was abundant. The couple had some “serious encounters” with bears and had to run for their lives more than once.
Mr. Melchiore even “survived in the middle of the lake” while forest fires consumed the surrounding land.

The couple spent 17 years at their second homestead.
“They were 17 of the best years of our life,” Mr. Melchiore said. “It was truly remote, truly wilderness, and truly an adventure. An experience of a lifetime.”
The Third and Final Homestead
In 2017, they decided to make one more move based on two criteria: they were getting older, and they missed the ocean. They found a seaside plot in Nova Scotia, and moved to build their “third and final homestead.”
Joking that they had “moved from the Arctic to the tropics,” they set to work building their third home from scratch in this more temperate climate, living in a tent onsite during the build as they had always done.
Mr. Melchiore says part of being self-sufficient and self-reliant is that they are their “own bosses.”
“We can decide what we want to do,” he said. “It’s pretty seasonal in the summertime; our chores range from weed whacking and keeping the grass down and keeping the place looking nice, to cutting our firewood and collecting brush to chip so that we can mulch our garden.
“Johanna is busy tending the garden and preserving what comes out. ... We like to think that unprocessed and wholesome, healthy food, nutritious food, is keeping us well,” said Mr. Melchiore, who is also a Masters sprinter, and says that living remotely has “been an opportunity for me to continue on as an athlete.”
During slower winters, the couple, who never had children, indulge in their hobbies; Mr. Melchiore enjoys woodworking, while his wife enjoys cooking, knitting, and needlecraft. There’s another major payoff to their remote, self-sufficient lifestyle: saving money.
“We are extremely frugal,” Mr. Melchiore said. “There have been a few times in life where we’ve gone into debt, but we have always worked sunup to sundown to get that debt paid off. ... The funds that we had stored from selling the first property in Maine, we reinvested in the Saskatchewan place.
Sharing the Wisdom
Through resisting debt, living frugally, reinvesting, generating energy, and saving money from various part-time jobs, the Melchiores have helped generate their own retirement fund. Their lifestyle has become an inspiration to other budding homesteaders, and after being “kept after” to write a book for some time, Mr. Melchiore finally gave in.
“Off Grid and Free: My Path to the Wilderness” was his first book on practical homesteading. A second book followed, co-written by the couple, “The Self-Sufficient Backyard for the Independent Homesteaders.” A third is in the pipeline, and the couple keeps followers updated on their website.
“The reaction has been magnificent. The book [The Self-Sufficient Backyard] has sold close to 200,000 copies,” Mr. Melchiore said. “I mean, you can’t ask for anything more in life than to be able to say you’ve done something for one person ... and there have been many people where we’ve done that.
“We’re so full of gratitude that we’ve had this opportunity.”

DHS fires three more FEMA workers after inspector general found crews bypassed pro-Trump homes

Three additional FEMA employees lost their jobs after an internal investigation confirmed they violated agency conduct standards during Hurricane Milton relief, part of a widening accountability push over crews that skipped homes displaying Trump signs in Florida.
The Department of Homeland Security terminated the workers Thursday, bringing the total number of FEMA staffers fired over the politically motivated home-skipping to at least four. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin and FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton both framed the latest round of firings as the final step in holding every employee involved responsible for what an inspector general report, released the previous week, laid bare: disaster relief crews in Lake Placid, Florida, deliberately passed over households because of the political signs in their yards.
The firings followed a separate investigation by FEMA's Office of Professional Responsibility, which concluded the three employees "failed to meet FEMA's standards of conduct." Their names have not been released. Fox News Digital reported the terminations came on top of earlier firings triggered by the same IG report, though DHS has not disclosed a precise total across all rounds.

The scandal traces back to October 2024, when Hurricane Milton tore through Florida, knocking out power for more than three million people and spawning tornadoes that killed at least four on the state's east coast. FEMA deployed Disaster Survivor Assistance crews to canvass damaged neighborhoods and connect residents with federal aid.
In Lake Placid, a small community in Highlands County, which voted roughly 70 percent for Donald Trump, crew leader Marn'i Washington, then 38, instructed workers to "avoid homes advertising Trump," according to whistleblower complaints. Breitbart reported that Washington issued the directive via a group chat and repeated it verbally on October 22 and October 27, 2024. Workers logged entries such as "Trump sign no entry per leadership" in the government tracking system.
At least 20 homes were skipped, Just The News reported, denying those residents the chance to even begin qualifying for FEMA assistance. Washington was fired on November 9, 2024, after a whistleblower filed a formal complaint. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, who led the agency at the time, called the conduct "reprehensible" and referred the matter to the Office of Special Counsel.
One anonymous FEMA employee who worked the same deployment put the situation plainly:
"I volunteered to help disaster victims, not discriminate against them. It didn't matter if people were black, white, Hispanic, for Trump, for Harris. Everyone deserves the same amount of help."
Inspector general confirmed 11 homes skipped, flagged possible Hatch Act violations
The DHS Office of Inspector General report released last week officially confirmed that FEMA crews bypassed at least 11 pro-Trump homes in Lake Placid, a lower number than the 20-plus cited in earlier whistleblower accounts, but enough to establish a clear pattern. The watchdog found the conduct violated both FEMA internal policy and the Hatch Act, the federal law that bars government employees from using their positions for partisan political purposes.
The New York Post reported that the IG attributed the misconduct not just to individual bad actors but to systemic failures in FEMA's ethics training, documentation practices, and supervisory oversight. Washington herself faced a Hatch Act complaint that could result in civil penalties or permanent debarment from future federal employment.
Perhaps more troubling: the IG raised concerns that the full scope of politically motivated home-skipping during the entire 2024 hurricane season may never be known.
A data contract that could have revealed whether crews skipped homes for political reasons during other storms had lapsed, and former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem was faulted for not funding the contractor whose records might have answered that question.
Washington maintains she did nothing wrong
Washington has pushed back publicly. In statements to the Washington Post, she argued that her teams faced genuine hostility from residents and that the avoidance was a safety measure, not political discrimination. She claimed her crews only bypassed homes that displayed both a Trump sign and additional indicators of hostility, such as signs referencing guns.
Washington told the Washington Post:
"I had never seen people so passionate during that political season, and what we were experiencing was not just conspiracy theories. People were physically charging at us with aggressive postures and accusations."
She described residents racing to fences and shouting at FEMA workers:
"People calling people on the phone saying FEMA was here. They would beat us to the fence and yell: 'Don't come here, you are part of Biden; we know what Biden is doing. You are taking our money and giving it to immigrants.' 'Drain the swamp' was a common term."
In a separate appearance on a YouTube podcast after her firing, Washington offered a different framing, telling host Roland Martin: "FEMA preaches avoidance first, and then de-escalation. This is not isolated."
But the IG report did not accept that framing. The watchdog found the home-skipping violated policy and law, not that it was a legitimate safety protocol. And the internal tracking entries workers left behind, "Trump sign no entry per leadership", suggest the directive was about yard signs, not physical threats.
House GOP pushed for broader accountability; a whistleblower flagged Georgia too
The three additional firings came after sustained pressure from House Republicans. National Review reported that House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer applauded the terminations and the broader push for accountability.
Comer said in a statement:
"Political affiliation should never be a factor in distributing taxpayer-funded disaster relief to Americans. I applaud FEMA for holding bad actors accountable and the Trump Administration for taking measures to ensure this never happens again at the agency."
FEMA's internal investigation concluded that the political bias was not systemic and was not directed by agency leadership, a finding that limits the scandal's reach but does not erase the conduct. A separate whistleblower also revealed an incident of anti-Trump bias involving Georgia residents who had Trump materials in and around their home, though details on that case remain sparse.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had previously directed the Florida Division of Emergency Management to investigate the Lake Placid incident. AP News reported that DeSantis called it "targeted political discrimination" and described it as evidence of "the blatant weaponization of government by partisan activists in the federal bureaucracy."
Hamilton and Mullin say FEMA has changed course
DHS Secretary Mullin framed the firings as a completed accountability process. In a statement Thursday, he said:
"Our job is to protect the American people, regardless of their political beliefs. This is especially important when it comes to disaster relief, where every second counts and lives are on the line. We've made sure that everyone responsible for this incident has been punished, and we'll make sure that nothing like this ever happens again."
FEMA Administrator Hamilton credited President Trump with empowering the agency to act. "Thanks to President Trump, FEMA has been empowered to hold accountable those who are responsible and has changed how it conducts survivor outreach to ensure Americans are treated fairly and assistance is driven by need," Hamilton said. He added: "Under my watch, all parties involved in this situation have been held accountable. Political bias has no room in public service."
FEMA leadership is now implementing additional training to ensure political neutrality in disaster relief distribution, though specific details of the new procedures have not been disclosed.
Several questions remain unanswered. DHS has not said what specific roles the three newly fired workers held, whether they were part of the same Lake Placid crew or involved in a different incident, or how many total employees have been terminated across all rounds.
The IG's concern about the lapsed data contract, and whether politically motivated skipping happened during other 2024 hurricanes, hangs unresolved.
When a family's home is wrecked by a hurricane, the last thing that should determine whether the government shows up is a yard sign. Every worker who made that calculation deserved to lose the job, and every American stuck rebuilding deserves to know it won't happen again.

A creative couple with a vision bought a vacant, century-old school building in Iowa and turned it into the living and working space of their dreams. Now it’s worth $1.75 million, and the renovated interior is a must-see.
Dean and Diane Jensen, both aged 68 and former educators, settled with their three children in Ames, Iowa, in 1996 after several years spent moving around the Midwest and the East Coast. Mr. Dean Jensen, a “creative and a dreamer,” wanted to construct a space within which he could live and work and share the space with others. His wife supported his vision.
When they bought the run-down Milford school in rural Nevada, Iowa, the restoration project became a family affair.
“Milford School is what’s called a township school,” the couple’s son, real estate broker and developer Luke Jensen, 40, told The Epoch Times. “It was built in 1923. ... It was a K-12 school until the late ‘60s, and then it consolidated and became a K-6 with the last class in 1991. The property generally sat vacant from 1991 until my parents acquired it in 2006. That’s when they purchased the school and then began the renovations.”
The Jensens bought the 27,000-square-foot school property for around $27,000. Their buy helped save hundreds of thousands of dollars, which would have otherwise been spent pulling down and disposing of the structure.
The school had deteriorated in the 15 years since its last class, yet, comprised mainly of durable brick and block concrete masonry, its structure was sound, and nothing needed to be demolished. However, the roof was a major issue.
“The roof had failed,” Mr. Luke Jensen said, “and that was the first project that they did, was secure the roof and create a great, watertight property.”
Next came what Mr. Dean Jensen referred to as “salvaging,” which included restoring wooden floors, chalkboards, and light fixtures, with even an original urinal being pulled out of a school bathroom to be refurbished and repurposed. Old classrooms were reconfigured to create three stories of liveable space.
Cracked plaster on the walls revealed the unique texture of exposed brick underneath, and the couple leaned toward a neoclassical style for the interior. Mr. Luke Jensen and his two younger siblings used their expertise in real estate and construction to help their parents’ vision come to life.
“We had a lot of relationships with people in Ames, at Iowa State University, or some of the area high schools, so we were able to hire a workforce to do a lot of the work,” Mr. Luke Jensen said. “There wasn’t a formal contracting company or a builder, that was self-performed.”
Needless to say, a project of such magnitude comes with its challenges with one of the major ones being the time it took to bring their vision to reality. An average house, Mr. Luke Jensen said, takes seven months to build. However, his parents’ house took six years.
Through it all, his parents stood firm.
“I think one of the great qualities of my parents is perseverance,” he said. “They had a vision, it was very clear to them what they wanted, and they were able to persevere to achieve that. There was no blueprint of how to do this; there was no step-by-step guide. They had to kind of self-initiate a lot of those tasks.”
Finally, in 2012, the Jensens moved into the three-bedroom, three-and-half-bathroom private residence on the third floor, which included a library, media room, and the old principal’s office that became their “little bit of den.” Meanwhile, the second floor was converted into a ballroom, conference room, game room, and four suites for guests.
The first floor was made into a woodworking shop, a drawing or painting area, and a ceramic studio, and has the building’s mechanical system. The building uses an energy-efficient geothermal system for heating and cooling.
One of Mr. Luke Jensen’s favorite spots in the refurbished home is the kitchen.
“The kitchen is just a great spot to gather,” he said. “It’s a large space, but it also feels cozy, and there’s a fireplace nearby. There’s a lot of light that comes in, so I can just recall some great breakfasts, getting up early and having coffee, talking as a family, and just being gathered around.”
The third story is also “pretty cool” he said, since it boasts views of cornfields and the surrounding Iowa countryside for miles.
The Jensens were so pleased with the outcome of their six-year renovation of the Milford school that they took on two additional projects, turning Iowa’s old Roosevelt and Crawford public school buildings into 50 condominiums in 2015 and 2019 respectively.
Mr. Luke Jensen said: “Now there’s 50 families that live in these buildings, so there’s a redemptive element in this, of seeing something that was forgotten and abandoned and putting new life into it. As a Christian–our family is a Christian family–there’s an element of that that’s really important to us.”
Recently, Mr. Dean Jensen has been suffering from ill health, thus, after over a decade of living in their unique refurbished home, he and his wife listed the Milford school for sale in September 2023. The listing price is $1.75 million. Their three children and 11 grandchildren, who all live locally, have been supportive of them in downsizing after a memorable chapter in the home of their dreams.

“My dad uses this analogy a lot, about being a chapter in a book, and that’s very cool,” Mr. Luke Jensen said. “It’s time for a new chapter to be written. And a new owner that has a new vision can build off of the history of the school and the work that my parents have done, and I think there’s some excitement to see what more it can do.”
