Recent government changes to the bill meant to modernize the Canadian broadcasting act could expand regulation to everything individual Canadians put on Facebook, Instagram or YouTube. The law that would see Canadians subjected to the most regulated internet in the free world.
The bill, in its current state, would turn the YouTube video of a kid’s soccer game, or the Instagram reel you posted of your brunch, or a TikTok you posted into a “program” that could be subject to regulation under the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s (CRTC) rules.
“It’s your Facebook post. It’s your tweet. It’s your cat videos. It’s your pictures of your children and grandchildren and that sort of stuff,” said Peter Menzies, a former CRTC vice-chair and past newspaper publisher.
“What it means is that somebody will be watching that, from the government, or a government regulator, and will be able to order it to be taken down if they find that it doesn’t suit whatever purposes they have.”

Hanukkah begins tonight: All over the world tonight, the Jewish People will be lighting their hanukkiahs (Hanukkah menorahs) in remembrance of the miracles that God performed about 2,200 years ago in Jerusalem. The first miracle was God's deliverance. For many years, the Jewish People had been oppressed by the Greeks, who desecrated the Holy Temple by sacrificing a pig on the altar. They enforced idolatry, forbidding the Jewish People from reading the Torah and following it. God delivered His people through a Jewish priest named Mattathias and his sons. They led a small group of Jewish men to rise up against the 25,000 soldiers of the Syrian/Greek army. That was the First and Real Miracle of Hanukkah. When the Jewish priests entered the Temple to re-dedicate it and light the Menorah, they found only one bottle of undefiled oil — enough to last just one day. Miraculously, that tiny supply of oil lasted eight full days. This second miracle gave the priests enough time to create more sanctified oil to keep the Temple Menorah burning 24 hours a day.
The miracle of the Menorah oil lasting for eight days is commemorated by eating a variety of foods cooked in oil, including delicious sufganiot (Israeli Hanukkah donuts).
Over 100 years later, Yeshua stood at the Holy Temple on Hanukkah when He was asked directly, "Are you the Messiah?" "Then came the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) at Jerusalem. It was winter and Yeshua (Jesus) was in the Temple area walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. "The Jews gathered around Him, saying, 'How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.'” (John 10:22–24) On that Hanukkah, Yeshua confirmed to those asking that He is the Messiah, the Shepherd of Israel. Other verses confirm that He is the Light of the World (John 8:12) and also that through Him we can be lights shining in the darkness of these Last Days (Philippians 2:15).

💥💥💥The armed forces have done important work during the B.C. flooding and other emergencies. But it's time to create a permanent non-military response force.
The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel deployed to assist with response and relief efforts in British Columbia are part of a growing trend. Between 1990 and 2010, the CAF participated in six humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions. In the next 10 years, that number jumped to 30. The CAF’s unique capabilities , and limited provincial and territorial investment in disaster management, have transformed it from a force of last resort in disaster response into a force of first, or only, resort. As climate change increases the number, duration and frequency of natural hazards facing Canada, demands for the CAF’s assistance will only increase.
But, as other commentators have pointed out, this tempo of domestic operations negatively affects the CAF’s force generation, operational readiness and training. Further, the CAF provides only response and relief; it does not do mitigation or recovery work. This leaves a clear gap in the country’s disaster management system. Provinces, territories and the federal government need to build surge capacity across the disaster management spectrum of prevention, mitigation, response and recovery.
Working with the Provinces and Territories, Public Safety Canada should build off existing organizations to create a cohesive and formalized network of voluntary local emergency response teams in communities across the country — particularly in underserved rural and isolated areas. With regular training and exercise opportunities that keep skills sharp, team members engaged and local channels of communication and collaboration open, these teams will be ready to provide the local disaster response their communities require.
