Jim Jordan Brings Receipts to Accuse Europe of Attempting to Influence 2024 Election:
House hearing clash: Is free speech threatened more by Europe or Trump?
WASHINGTON — Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee led by Ohio’s Jim Jordan clashed sharply over free speech with Democrats on Wednesday, with Jordan warning about dangers from European censorship laws targeting American companies while Democrats accused the Trump administration of launching unprecedented attacks on the First Amendment at home.
The hearing featured testimony from Nigel Farage, a right-wing populist British parliament member who helped lead the “Brexit” campaign that resulted in the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union.
Jordan kicked off the hearing by accusing Europe of inappropriately trying to influence U.S. elections, highlighting communications that former EU Digital Services Act enforcer Thierry Breton sent to Elon Musk, the owner of the social media platform X, that said the company failed to comply with the EU’s Digital Service Act because it wasn’t addressing illegal content and disinformation.
“When platforms are forced to change their terms of service to comply with European laws, it affects what we see, what we read, what we say online here in America, infringing on Americans’ First Amendment rights,” said Jordan, pledging that his committee will continue to move legislation that protects free speech from threats, including threats from abroad.
He also said the administration of ex-President Joe Biden pressured platforms to remove content, including material that Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. posted on social media when he was a presidential candidate.
“We all want to protect kids, but censorship laws are never about disinformation or child safety or anything else,” said Jordan. “They’re always about censoring criticism of the government. Social media is a relatively new technology, but censorship is as old as time.
Disinformation, hate speech, labels are always used by the people in power to censor their critics. My experience has taught me that today’s misinformation is tomorrow’s truth. We’ve seen it time and time again.”
The committee’s top Democrat, Jamie Raskin of Maryland, fired back with a blistering assessment of domestic threats, saying “there is a free speech crisis in America today, but there’s no free speech crisis in Britain.”
He accused Republicans of ignoring “massive repression in Russia, China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia” while “vilifying European liberal democracies” that are simply engaging in content moderation similar to what the U.S. does under the First Amendment.
Ohio’s Vance praised for European warning
The hearing featured praise for Vice President JD Vance’s February speech at the Munich Security Conference, where the Cincinnati Republican warned about threats from European allies rather than traditional adversaries. Farage credited Vance with getting the debate about censorship in Europe “up and running.”
Farage, who leads the UK’s Reform Party, testified about what he called Britain’s descent into authoritarianism, citing cases like comedian Graham Linehan’s arrest at Heathrow Airport for social media posts he made months earlier in Arizona.
“This could happen to any American man or woman that goes to Heathrow that has said things online that the British government and British police don’t like,” Farage warned.
Georgia Democrat Hank Johnson pointed out that Farage’s party has fewer than 10 seats in the 650-seat parliament, calling him the leader “of a fringe party,” who was trying to curry favor with large political donor Elon Musk so he’d finance his bid for prime minister.
Farage responded defiantly: “Oh, I’m a fringe? All right, don’t worry about that. Yes, absolutely... I’m a fringe party leader seeking to run for prime minister of Great Britain.”
Democrats highlight domestic censorship concerns
Democrats used the hearing to redirect attention to what they characterized as the Trump administration’s systematic assault on free expression. Raskin detailed a litany of concerns, including:
· The firing of Centers for Disease Control officials who wouldn’t change vaccine conclusions.
· Screening of U.S. visitors’ social media at borders for anti-Trump content.
· Attacks on public broadcasting and frivolous lawsuits against media outlets.
· The decimation of Voice of America.

EV Sales fall 30% in 3 Months!
Carney caves on EV Mandate!
Carney has announced his government will delay the Electric Vehicle Sales Quota that was set to force Dealerships to make 20% of all new car sales battery-powered by 2026.
Electric vehicles in Canada just hit a major speed bump, with new registrations plummeting by nearly 30 per cent in the last 12 months.
Last week, Prime Minister Carney decided to hit pause on the Liberal government’s EV mandate, which would have required all new vehicle sales be zero-emission by 2035. Carney said the program will undergo a 60-day review but did not commit to scrapping it.

Canadians registered 541,566 new motor vehicles in the second quarter, up 5.9% from the second quarter of 2024 and an increase of 26.9% from the first quarter of 2025. Despite concerns over automobile tariffs, the second quarter of 2025 marked the highest number of new quarterly registrations since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
All vehicle types saw an increase in new registrations in the second quarter compared with the previous year. New registrations for vans (+29.0%) saw the largest increase, followed by multipurpose vehicles (+6.8%), pickup trucks (+2.5%) and passenger cars (+1.0%).
Among fuel types, new registrations for hybrid electric vehicles increased 60.7% in the second quarter compared with the same period one year earlier, continuing their trend of solid year-over-year growth. New registrations for diesel-powered vehicles (+15.8%) and gasoline-powered vehicles (+5.6%) also increased, while new registrations for battery electric vehicles (-39.2%) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (-2.2%) decreased compared with the previous year.
Share of registrations of new zero-emission vehicles remains at over 8% of all new registrations
In the second quarter, 46,366 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were registered, a decrease of 29.5% compared with the same period one year earlier. ZEVs accounted for 8.6% of all new motor vehicle registrations in the second quarter.
This share was similar to the share of new registrations in the previous quarter (8.7%), but marks a stark difference with the fourth quarter of 2024, when ZEVs surged to 18.3% of all new registrations.
New zero-emission vehicle registrations continue to fall as rebates dry up
Quebec's ZEV rebate program (Roulez vert) was reinstated on April 1, 2025, but with lower financial incentives than in 2024. At the same time, Quebec experienced a 38.1% year-over-year decline in new ZEV registrations in the second quarter of 2025.
British Columbia, which halted its ZEV rebate program (Go Electric) in May, saw a decrease in new ZEV registrations of 27.6% compared with the previous year. However, it is worth noting that this marks the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year declines in new ZEV registrations for the province.
Prince Edward Island (-30.6%), Ontario (-18.6%), Nova Scotia (-14.1%), Saskatchewan (-11.3%) and Manitoba (-4.6%) experienced decreases in new ZEV registrations in the second quarter compared with the previous year. Meanwhile, ZEV registrations increased slightly in New Brunswick (+1.6%), perhaps reflecting the impacts of the federal ZEV rebate program, which was paused earlier this year.
