CANADIAN:

Carney says US Trade Talks will take some time, vows Trump won't Dictate the Terms

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday that talks with the Trump administration to renew CUSMA could take longer than anticipated as Canada pushes for what it calls a mutually beneficial agreement.


Carney also vowed that the Americans alone will not dictate the terms of whatever deal is struck, insisting this process is a negotiation that will have to result in some U.S. concessions to Canada before Ottawa and the provinces make their own compromises and agree to renew the trilateral trade agreement for another 16 years.


The U.S. has maintained that renewing CUSMA is a separate and distinct issue from the punishing Section 232 tariffs that Trump has levied on Canadian goods like steel, aluminum, lumber and autos.


Canadian negotiators don't see it that way.

Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc has said Canada doesn't want a "one-off" deal on CUSMA while industries hit hard by Trump's tariffs are left for another negotiation.


That's a message Carney himself relayed when asked Wednesday about the U.S. trying to fence off the sectoral tariffs from the CUSMA negotiations. He said there needs to be a "comprehensive approach."


"We will sit down and work through those issues with the broader approach in the negotiation. We’ve made some counter-proposals, which they’re aware of, and the time will come to really roll up our sleeves," he said.


"It's not a case of the United States dictates the terms. We have a negotiation. We can come to a mutually successful outcome. It will take some time."


Both sides have now publicly conceded that the review process is unlikely to wrap up by July 1, which the text of the original CUSMA stipulates as a deadline of sorts. 

Still, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told Congress on Wednesday that the administration is keen to preserve at least some aspects of CUSMA.


He told U.S. lawmakers that the deal has worked well for American workers, businesses and farmers in some instances — delivering the clearest signal yet that the U.S. is leaning toward a CUSMA renewal rather than ripping it up entirely.

"Our goal with all of this is to make sure that we maintain market access into these countries," Greer said of Canada and Mexico, under questioning at the Ways and Means Committee.


"I don't think we're in a position to rubber stamp the deal. We now have six years of data and we see problems. We also see good areas."

Canada's concessions

Regarding the "problems" Greer mentioned, Canada has already made concessions to the Trump administration and received nothing in return. The Liberal government agreed to drop its digital services tax on tech giants, and removed or did not proceed with some retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods.


Canadian officials maintain those choices brought the two sides close to a deal on relief last fall, but Ontario Premier Doug Ford's Ronald Reagan ad pillorying tariffs scuttled any progress when it angered Trump. 


While the Americans have given up nothing so far, they are still demanding more from Canada.

In a report to Congress in December, Greer laid out what more he wants Canada to do: drop the Online Streaming Act, which brought online platforms like Netflix, Spotify and YouTube under Canadian broadcasting rules, and make changes to the supply-managed dairy sector.


Greer is also seized with the provincial boycotts on U.S. beer, wine and spirits — a blockade that has been highly effective and cost American liquor giants billions of dollars in lost revenue. He is demanding they be lifted.

Other irritants include provincial procurement policies and what the Americans claim is excessive customs paperwork.


Since then, Greer has raised some other issues in his recent National Trade Estimate Report, like Canada's supposedly lax approach to imports from countries with forced labour.


Greer said if Canada makes some changes to its trade policies, "I hope we can get over the hump on some of these things to have significant talks."

But LeBlanc said Wednesday that Canada has no interest in caving on these issues until the Americans drop or rework Section 232 tariffs.


"We have said to them, you know what, if you want the premier of Ontario or the premier of Quebec or the premier of British Columbia to change those policies, you have to give them some relief or some path to a better outcome," LeBlanc said at a conference in Toronto.


"We've said to them very firmly, the Government of Canada is not going to ask the provinces to do this unless you put them in a better position economically than they're in now."


While LeBlanc said there's a chance the two sides can "make progress on their list," Canada won't act until there's some movement on this country's priorities.

"The most important one remains those sectoral tariffs," he said. But he also identified "red lines" that are non-negotiable, such as dismantling supply management or dropping cultural and French-language protections.


Trump's 'not gonna go back' on tariffs

Greer's own comments before Congress on Wednesday signalled that the fight over tariffs could be protracted because Trump is wedded to his scheme.


"The president's not gonna go back to the old situation where we had no tariffs and we just let foreign goods made by foreign workers come in without any fee," Greer said.

Evidence suggests Trump's tariffs have actually hurt manufacturing interests in the U.S. — and cost tens of thousands of lost jobs in the sector, including automotive jobs.

But Greer said the administration forced Chrysler's parent company Stellantis to move a production line from Brampton, Ont., to the U.S., and that's a sign to them that the policy is working.


"We're seeing the jobs come back again," he said. "We want to make sure that we have those jobs in production right here in America."


Greer said that while Canada is looking to build more trading relationships with international partners — a possible reference to the Chinese EV deal Carney cut earlier this year — the U.S. is trying to "correct for the problems of globalization."

"Those are two models that don't fit together very well," Greer said.


Trump's top trade official said that if Canada continues down that path, the U.S. will need to take another look at country of origin rules to ensure the U.S. is not "disadvantaged."

Judge Halts Certification of Virginia Map Referendum

A Virginia judge on Wednesday voided a closely watched congressional redistricting referendum and permanently blocked the state from certifying the results, ruling the entire process unconstitutional.


In his ruling, Tazewell County Circuit Court Judge Jack Hurley sided with Republican plaintiffs and declared the amendment and enabling legislation "void ab initio," citing multiple violations of the Virginia Constitution.


The ruling also permanently enjoins state officials certifying the results of Tuesday's special election or taking any steps to implement the proposed congressional map.

Attorney General Jay Jones said the state "will immediately" appeal to the state Court of Appeals.


"As I said last night, Virginia voters have spoken, and an activist judge should not have veto power over the People's vote," Jones said in a statement posted on X. "We look forward to defending the outcome of last night's election in court."

The decision escalates a monthslong legal fight over the Democrat-backed effort to redraw Virginia's congressional districts mid-decade, a move Republicans argued was unlawful and politically motivated.

Hurley's order laid out a sweeping rebuke of the process used by the Democrat-controlled General Assembly.


The court found the amendment violated constitutional requirements governing how amendments must be passed, including the requirement that two legislative approvals be separated by a House of Delegates election, which cannot occur until 2027.

It also ruled lawmakers failed to follow statutory procedures, including requirements for public notice and timing.


In addition, the judge found the ballot question itself was "flagrantly misleading" and did not accurately describe the amendment approved by lawmakers.

The order further held that the legislation improperly combined multiple subjects, violated restrictions on local election laws, and required early voting before the constitutionally mandated 90-day window had elapsed.


Based on those findings, the court declared all votes cast in the referendum "ineffective."

Beyond invalidating the vote, the ruling bars the state from taking any action to implement new districts tied to the amendment. That includes updating voter registration records, changing precincts or polling places, printing ballots under new maps, or using any new districts in upcoming primaries or general elections.


The judge also found the plaintiffs would suffer "irreparable harm" without an injunction, including potential disruption to sitting members of Congress whose districts could have been altered mid-cycle.


The referendum, narrowly approved by voters, would have temporarily shifted redistricting authority from Virginia's bipartisan commission to the Democrat-controlled legislature through 2030.


Supporters argued the change was needed to counter Republican-led redistricting in other states.

Opponents called it a partisan power grab that bypassed constitutional safeguards designed to prevent gerrymandering.


"This is another example of Democrats being angry at Republicans for things they are guilty of actually doing," former Trump campaign national press secretary Hogan Gidley told Newsmax on Tuesday. "Seven of the 10 most gerrymandered states in this country are Democrat, and in 16 of the 20 least gerrymandered states in this country are Republican states.


"The whole thing is a scam."

The stakes extend beyond Virginia. Analysts have said a new map could have shifted several congressional seats, potentially affecting the balance of power in Washington, where Republicans hold a narrow majority. Democrats hold six of Virginia's 11 House seats, but the new maps could possibly give them 10.


The Virginia Supreme Court previously allowed the referendum to proceed while litigation continued, setting the stage for the current clash.


With certification now blocked and the amendment struck down, the case is expected to move quickly on appeal, leaving uncertainty over whether any redistricting changes will take effect before the 2026 elections.

Andrew Hugg, the U.S. Army’s Branch Chief for Chemical Nuclear Surety, was reportedly escorted from the Pentagon this week, and the event marked more than just a personnel shift within the G-3/5/7 Division.

This moment captures a specific kind of modern anxiety. The private lives of officials entrusted with the safety and compliance of nuclear-related systems are increasingly vulnerable to the human desire for connection. Puzzling $ verses [An application of #1 above]

This morning I heard about someone who offered a GIFT, which could be an acronym for Good IF Taken [GIFT].  If someone offered $100 bill it's only good if taken.  Many people are offered Jesus but the offer is only valuable if taken, if accepted and then spent on others.  You can't hoard Grace.  It is in giving that we receive, in dying to ourselves that we are born to eternal life.  

 

BUT WAIT!  THERE'S MORE!

Last Sunday God questioned me.  "How much would it take if I paid you to fast all day?"  Oh oh.  That pricked my conscience.  Uh, like, would I do it for $20?  Probably not.  $50?  Uh, ya, OK, I'd fast all day if God or someone he inspired was to pay me fifty bucks for the day.  So I'm admitting that I'd do it for fifty bucks but not to please my God?  Is that how much his word of wisdom is worth to me?  How much would it take to get me to witness to someone, to leave a tract on someone's car window?  Ten bucks would do it.  Less than that, and I forget about it.  Is that how much value I put on his Word?  We could keep going, eh?  


The stakes can get pretty high.  As a young man I read something that I never forgot.  Imagine a rope tied to a bell.  If you ring it, you live a healthy and prosperous life but some unknown person in a third world country would die without knowing God.  Would you pull the rope?


Does this sound crass?  Jesus explains how giving money to someone to achieve God's goals can be a good thing:

In referring to “worldly wealth,” Jesus is not saying that believers should gain wealth dishonestly and then be generous with it. Worldly here means “having to do with life on earth.” In your earthly life, “make friends”; that is, bless others. Use the monetary resources you have to reach out to others. The result will be friendships that endure into eternity: the souls we reach in this world will welcome us into “eternal dwellings” someday.

DONATIONS: WHEN & HOW MUCH

There are two kinds of donations - Time & Money.  We don't need to hear again the parable of the cheerful giver with just one coin Vs. the proud rich giver in the temple.  Do we?  Or an education about how much money your tithe should be (as long as it's first on your list of expenses).  Pastors have said enough.

 

I'd rather speak about donating our time, Volunteering.  There are many clubs and activities where you just go and donate your time on a good-will basis.  But a wise pastor once told me that when no money is exchanged, there is no commitment.  We should either receive a material benefit or give a material benefit, like money (or some kind of trade).  In a Private Membership Association that can take the form of "donation" in lieu of membership fees.  If the person joining the private "club" can only afford to donate his or her time, then the value of their time should be established simply by asking how much they'd like to be paid for an hour's work.

 

 

WELFARE: GOOD OR BAD

I once wondered why so many good Christians were unemployed and on government benefits of one kind or another.  Then the thought occurred to me that Welfare, just like every other kind of money described above, can be bad if it promotes a waste of time, or good if it's used for God's purposes.  That means considering it a blessing that covers expenses while God's saints make use of their time bringing honor and glory to Him.

 

PROSPERITY

I think we've all heard criticism of the "Prosperity Gospel" in which prosperity becomes the expected result of pure faith, just like healing becomes the expected result of pure faith.  And if it doesn't happen it can be very embarrassing if not shatter a person's faith.  But wait!  Didn't the apostle Paul say, 

 

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. (Philippians 4:12)

 

Who knows what assignment they might be given in God's secret service, or what new identity they might be given in God's Witness Protection Program.  The "cover" job is irrelevant if it is reverent.  We are released for His Service, not released to serve family first, or enjoy the service of Satan.  We do a dis-service to God by telling Him what we expect.

 

St. Francis was given the cover of a poor man.  I know another saint who has been given the cover of a rich man so he can bless others by sharing all his life.

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

1The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 

2Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. 

3But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. 

4It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,

but a body you prepared for me;

6with burnt offerings and sin offerings

you were not pleased.

7Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—

I have come to do your will, my God.’ ”

8First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law. 

9Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 

10And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 

12But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 

13and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 

14For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

15The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:

16“This is the covenant I will make with them

after that time, says the Lord.

I will put my laws in their hearts,

and I will write them on their minds.”

17Then he adds:

“Their sins and lawless acts

I will remember no more.”

18And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.


A Call to Persevere in Faith

19Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 

20by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 

21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 

22let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 

23Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 

25not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

26If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 

27but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 

28Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 

29How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 

30For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 

31It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering. 

33Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. 

34You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. 

35So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.

36You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. 

37For,

“In just a little while,

he who is coming will come

and will not delay.”

38And,

“But my righteous one will live by faith.

And I take no pleasure

in the one who shrinks back.”

39But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Sometime in this next week Trumpets will sound over all cell phones worldwide, to announce that in the next five hours, everyone would need to be in a place of their choice for a Worldwide Blackout that would last ten to twelve days.


The lockdown meant that all communication systems worldwide would be down – Internet, TV and Radio, with phones only working for 911 calls. (You could obtain a special app from the Military that hooked your phone to the new Star Link Satellite System).


Banks would be closed and credit/debit cards and ATMs would not work. Planes, trains would be shut down.The power grid would shut off for a short period of time while the World switched over to Tesla Free Energy.
