Morning Update:

Seeking answers for Johnny Noviello:

Good morning. The family of a Canadian man who died in ICE custody are grieving and seeking answers about why he was detained, unreachable, and if he had access to his medication. More on that below, plus updates from the Middle East and a lost message that has been found.

Questions remain about a Canadian citizen’s death in ICE custody

 

Hi, I’m Janice Dickson, and I cover international affairs for The Globe. I recently went to Daytona Beach to find out what happened to a Canadian who died in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

 

Two weeks ago, U.S. immigration officials announced that a 49-year old Canadian citizen, Johnny Noviello, died in detention. ICE said that he had been detained for five weeks, and the cause of his death was under investigation. There were few details provided.

 

Noviello had lived near Daytona Beach for most of his life. He moved to the area with his family as a child and established his life there. But in 2023, he was convicted of several drug-related charges, changing the course of his life. Noviello wasn’t a U.S. citizen. And in the U.S., non-U.S. citizens who are convicted of drug offences can be deported.

 

President Trump’s crackdown on immigrants has led to increased ICE raids, detentions and deportations. The White House has directed ICE to arrest at least 3,000 people per day.

 

It is one thing for Noviello to face deportation to Canada, it’s quite another for him to spend five weeks incarcerated only to die before he was able to reunite with family in Montreal and start a new life.

 


Investigative reporters Kathryn Blaze Baum, Sara Mojtehedzadeh and I set out to uncover what happened to him. I travelled to speak with his relatives, friends, co-workers and former criminal-defence lawyer.

 

Kathryn and Sara reviewed hundreds of pages of court documents dating back to the early 1990’s, interviewed immigration lawyers and experts from across the United States, and uncovered government records detailing the troubling conditions in immigration detention centres.

 

And they also sought answers from officials, requesting records from Miami Fire Rescue Department, which responded to the 911 call the day Johnny died, contacting ICE repeatedly as well as the Bureau of Prisons, the federal agency responsible for the jail in Miami where Noviello was held and ultimately died.

 

No officials provided us with any explanation about why Noviello was detained for 40 days.

 

We also sought answers from Global Affairs Canada. The day that ICE announced Noviello had died, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand wrote on social media that the federal government was pressing for answers. Two weeks later, it’s not clear what the government is doing. Global Affairs will only say that consular officials remain in contact with U.S. authorities.

 

In Florida, I found a grieving family searching for answers. When I went to Noviello’s dad’s autoshop, Daytona Auto Sales, I found Angelo Noviello, 80, sitting alone in his office.

 

The first thing he said to me was that his son would have been 50 that day. It was Canada Day. He said that he had been so worried about his son accessing medication, because he had epilepsy, that the day he was picked up by ICE and taken to Orlando, he drove his epilepsy medication there. Noviello was later transferred to Miami.


The federal detention centre in Miami where Mr. Noviello died after being arrested in May. 

 

He had one brief phone call with his son but couldn’t reach him for the remainder of his five weeks in detention. He and Noviello’s other relatives and friends are desperate for answers. They’re concerned that his epilepsy condition contributed to his death and they want to know why they couldn’t access him for the five weeks he was detained.

 

In the end, our reporting found that Noviello’s prolonged detention in a prison with a disturbing record shouldn’t have happened. And the U.S. immigration system is not prepared to handle the increasing number of people waiting to be deported.

 

This is the story about a man who got swept up in the Trump administration’s intense immigration crackdown and a deeply flawed system that shows no signs of transparency when it comes to how Noviello was treated or his death.

 

Concerns and the hunt for answers are becoming more pressing. Meanwhile, the U.S. Congress has approved another US$30-billion toward more arrests and deportations.

CNN Stacks 4 Democrats Against Scott Jennings—and It Backfires Spectacularly:

One New York Times reporter tried to frame Republicans as the ‘party of taking things away.’ But Jennings shut her down with a response she didn't see coming.

Scott Jennings didn’t hold back Wednesday when he faced off against an entire CNN panel stacked with Democrats.

It was nothing short of a reckoning.

 

At one point, a New York Times reporter tried to brand Republicans as the “party of taking things away,” pointing to issues like healthcare. Jennings wasn’t having it.

“My rebuttal to that would be Democrats have become the party of EXPLODING government benefit programs… and then saying, ‘Gee whiz, now people are trying to take things away.’”

Scott Jennings didn’t bother with pleasantries before setting off fireworks on CNN’s panel.

He went straight for Senator Thom Tillis, brushing aside Tillis’s criticism of the GOP’s “Big Beautiful Bill” as not just misguided but flat-out politically clueless.

 

“I think he’s wrong,” Jennings said coolly. “And most—virtually every Republican thinks he’s wrong.”

“There’s nothing politically devastating about trying to bar 1.4 million illegal aliens from getting welfare,” he argued.

“There’s nothing politically devastating about encouraging 4.8 million people who choose not to work to try to work a little in order to get government benefits.”

 

Jennings also reminded the panel that this wasn’t some brutal cost-cutting plan. The bill included a $50 billion fund for rural hospitals—an issue Tillis himself had flagged as a priority.

“So I don’t agree with his [Tillis’s] political analysis, nor does virtually every other Republican who helped to craft and ultimately pass this bill,” Jennings concluded.


“And I think Republicans ought to lean into these things: work requirements are good. Encouraging work instead of welfare is a good thing, and it will work in campaigns.”

It didn’t take long for the tension to spike on the panel.

 

Axios reporter Alex Thompson tried to corner Scott Jennings with what he thought was a classic “gotcha” moment, pointing out that the bill’s Medicaid changes wouldn’t even take effect until after the midterms.

“You say, Republicans should lean in, but most of these Medicaid cuts don’t come until after the midterms. Why is that?” Thompson pressed.

 

“Well, I mean, states run the Medicaid program,” Jennings replied. “I do think it’s reasonable to give them time to prepare to enact changes to the program.”

“But it doesn’t matter, because Democrats are obviously going to go all in on this hysteria campaign,” Jennings warned.

 

And he offered this pointed advice to his party:

“And I’m telling you as a debating point, if Democrats want to run on giving Medicaid to illegal aliens and people who won’t work or choose not to work, Republicans have a counter-message that will work if they are willing to courageously defend it.”

 

Congressman Glenn Ivey joined the debate and went after Republicans hard, accusing them of smearing working-class families as lazy freeloaders at a time when many are struggling just to keep the lights on.

“I was going to say, I mean, you’re putting your Republican colleagues of mine in the position of having to declare people to be deadbeats at the time when they are working two jobs, they are doing everything they can to make ends meet,” Ivey said.

 

“And you guys are going to take the rug out from under them, and they’re not going to be happy. They’re going to be rightly, I think, upset about it.”

Jennings jumped in before Ivey could even finish, shaking his head in disagreement.

“You guys are conflating two populations, and it’s not my conjecture. Just ask the CBO. Everybody likes to cite the CBO, the CBO’s own numbers,” he countered.

 

That’s when CNN’s Kasie Hunt tried to throw him off with a teasing jab: “Except you, typically.” Jennings added.

“Well, I’m going to cite them because they tend to be popular, at least in here.”

 

Jennings then laid out the numbers he said proved his point.

“4.8 million people on Medicaid who choose not to work. That’s not my going out and counting. That’s the CBO. 1.4 million illegal aliens.”

 

He argued Republicans could absolutely sell these distinctions—if they were willing to speak plainly about them.

“So there is a population that chooses not to work that maybe should try a little,” he added. “And the people you cite are not going to lose their benefits.”

 

But the conversation was just warming up.

New York Times reporter Lulu Garcia-Navarro took her turn challenging the Republican position, arguing their messaging was boxing them in as the “party of taking things away.”

 

“It is much easier to run on a message of someone took something away from you than it is to say, no, actually, we didn’t take it away. Some certain populations are undeserving, certain populations, you know, aren’t actually there to get it,” she argued.

“I hear your analysis, and it’s a valid debating point,” Jennings acknowledged. But he wasn’t about to let Democrats off the hook.

 

“My rebuttal to that would be Democrats have become the party of EXPLODING government benefit programs during Covid, vastly expanding Medicaid beyond what it was ever intended to do, and then saying, ‘Gee whiz, now people are trying to take things away.’”

Garcia-Navarro shot back. “Do you think people like healthcare, though? Do you think people like healthcare?” she pressed.

 

Jennings delivered a masterful reply.

“I think they like healthcare, I don’t think they like the system we live under, which is not a Republican system,” he countered. “It’s Obamacare! Which exploded premiums and has vastly expanded the welfare state.”

By the end of the exchange, Lulu Garcia-Navarro tried to bring the conversation back to a universal value—something just about everyone could agree on: the idea that anyone should have access to medical care.

“But what I’m saying is most people do believe that there should be a basic ability to go to a hospital and get some care,” she said.


“I agree,” Jennings replied, “but I think most people also believe that people should not be able to sit and do nothing and receive government benefits, or be in the country illegally and receive government benefits.”

“An attempt to work is a good thing,” he added.

“And the Republican ethos is encouraging work. The Democratic ethos is encouraging government dependence,” Jennings said.

 

“That’s the debate!” he said firmly, knowing it was a mic-drop moment.

And just like that, the 4-on-1 debate ended in a unanimous victory for Jennings.

Wed. 9 July 2025 Debt Forgiveness Australia, Wolverine: Hey Wolvie I think Nesara Gesara is kicking in here in Australia. I got a debt forgiveness letter for $2,000 on my credit card. The bank National Bank has waived my debt. I applied for hardship assistance about 2 months ago as I am awaiting surgery on my leg and offered to pay $40 per month, back then I got an aggressive letter from their collection department demanding bank statements, medical certificates etc.


I didn’t send it and just wrote a polite letter saying I lost my job due to injury, I intend paying $40 per month etc… Out of the blue today I received a polite letter saying debt forgiveness and the $2,000 balance is waived (I never once asked for that). The letter also said new credit reporting rules came into effect from July 2022. Since when does a bank do such a nice thing when I was offering to continue to pay?


Thurs. 10 July 2025 Greyeagle1 wrote about a Bank Story from a trusted friend: My friend has had a bank account at this bank for over 30 years. Knows everybody by first name. They know her by her first name. She got a notice from the bank that they would be closed from Wednesday at closing on July 9, 2025 until Monday morning July 14, 2025.


She went into the bank today and talked with senior loan manager whom she has known since he started. She asked why closing? Answer changing to new banking system


Q: Are you going to be doing foreign currency exchanges?

A: I cant tell you that.Then she went to the head bank manager whom she has known for 30 years.

  • ·        The initiative, led by Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba and U.S. Marshal Juan Mattos Jr., resulted in 264 arrests over the course of a one-month statewide operation.

  • ·        Those apprehended include 17 homicide suspects, 95 documented gang members, and dozens of individuals wanted for violent and s****l offenses.

  • ·        Among those captured was Lorenzo Benitez, 54, an illegal alien from Guatemala. Authorities said Benitez was arrested on June 4 in Plainfield, NJ, and faces multiple counts of s****l assault in Keansburg.

  • ·        The CIA lied for decades about George Joannides and their own role in the Kennedy case before and after the actual assassination took place. The disclosure was hidden in plain sight within a batch of 40 documents concerning the Psychological Warfare Officer.
