Biden Administration to tear down William Penn statue, make historic park more 'welcoming' and 'inclusive':
The Biden administration’s National Park Service intends to tear down a statue of William Penn from a historic park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The removal of the statue is being done to make the park a more "welcoming, accurate, and inclusive experience for visitors."
In 1982, Welcome Park was constructed to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Pennsylvania by William Penn. The park was named after Penn's ship, Welcome, that transported him to Pennsylvania. Welcome Park was designed by world-renowned architectural firm Venturi, Rauch, and Scott Brown.
The nonprofit Independence Hall Association describes Welcome Park as an "open-air museum," and is "the only site in historic Philadelphia dedicated to celebrating the life and contributions of William Penn."
Penn – a Quaker – founded the province of Pennsylvania in 1682 in an attempt to provide a place that offered religious freedom since the Quakers were persecuted.
The Bill of Rights Institute noted: "During the 1660s, Englishmen harshly persecuted the Quakers, whom they considered to be dangerous radicals because of their teachings on social and religious equality."
"Penn had high hopes that the colony would enjoy religious freedom, as well as peace with the Lenni Lenapes and other American Indians who had lived in this land for centuries," the institute added. "Like all Quakers, he was a pacifist, and he was adamant that his new colony would avoid the bloodshed and war between Indians and other English colonists that had occurred in New England and Virginia."
The National Park Service announced last week that it "proposes to rehabilitate Welcome Park to provide a more welcoming, accurate, and inclusive experience for visitors."
"The proposed rehabilitation of Welcome Park includes expanded interpretation of the Native American history of Philadelphia and was developed in consultation with representatives of the indigenous nations of the Haudenosaunee, the Delaware Nation, Delaware Tribe of Indians, the Shawnee Tribe, and the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma," the NPS proclaimed.
"The Penn statue and Slate Roof house model will be removed and not reinstalled. In a separate and future effort, new exhibit panels will be installed on the south site wall to replace the Penn timeline," the NPS declared.
Slate Roof House was Penn's residence in Philadelphia starting in 1699.
The public may submit comments within a 14-day period, starting on Jan. 8.
The official X social media page for the Independence National Historical Park has been bombarded by hundreds of comments vehemently opposing the William Penn statue being torn down.
One X user replied, "This makes absolutely no sense. I am a native Philly guy and Penn was 'woke' for his time. He supported and paid the Indian tribes. You are literally crushing a pioneering leader out of intellectual laziness."
Another person said, "You decided to remove the William Penn statue from the ONLY site in the city dedicated to the life and ideas of its founder? Because some people are uncomfortable with it? Absolutely shameful."
A commenter added, "You’re removing the statue of William Penn - a paragon of religious liberty and self-government who influenced our U.S. Founding Fathers from the site of his home in the city he founded. Shame. Scrap this plan."

Everyone, regardless of whether they entered the country legally, will be eligible for Medi-Cal, the state’s public health insurance program, as of January 1.
Previously, this program was only available to low-income individuals, families with children, seniors, people with disabilities, people in foster care, pregnant women, and low-income people with diseases such as tuberculosis, cancer, or HIV/AIDS.
Prior to the new rules, illegal immigrants could only receive emergency and pregnancy-related care; however, surgical and non-surgical procedures that “bring primary and secondary gender characteristics into conformity with the individual’s identified gender, including ancillary services, such as hair removal” are now covered as well.
According to the Daily Caller, a state letter on Medi-Cal stipulates that “gender-affirming care” is only a covered benefit “when medically necessary.”
“Requests for gender-affirming care,” it went on to say, “should be from specialists experienced in providing culturally competent care to transgender and gender diverse individuals and should use nationally recognized guidelines.”
In May of last year, the decision was made to include illegal immigrants in Medi-Cal.
According to state Sen. Maria Elena Durazo, it is a “historic investment” that “speaks to California’s commitment to health care as a human right.”
“In California, we believe everyone deserves access to quality, affordable health care coverage – regardless of income or immigration status,” said Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office at the time.
“Through this expansion, we’re making sure families and communities across California are healthier, stronger, and able to get the care they need when they need it.”
Former governor Jerry Brown made illegal immigrant children eligible for free healthcare in the state for the first time in 2015.
In 2019, this was extended to people aged 19 to 25.
All undocumented residents under the age of 50 will now be eligible for the program.
When the bill was passed, officials estimated that it would add 700,000 people to the system.

Rebel News journalist David Menzies was arrested on Monday during a memorial service in Richmond Hill commemorating the victims of Flight PS752 for attempting to question Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland on a public street.
The police officer who arrested Menzies said it was for assaulting a police officer, which he accused Menzies of doing while walking alongside Freeland.
Menzies was asking Freeland why the Liberal government hasn’t labelled Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist entity.
The arrest unfolded as Menzies was physically obstructed by an unidentified plainclothes police officer who appears to be with the RCMP. Video footage captures the moment when the situation escalates, with Menzies surrounded by officers and eventually escorted away in a police car.
Menzies asks the police officer on two occasions for his name and badge number, but the officer does not provide it.
Menzies told True North he was released later without charges.
“This is what they do to journalists,” Menzies said in the video as he was being escorted away. “I was merely trying to scrum Minister Freeland and the RCMP officer blocked me, and evidently this is a trumped-up charge of assault, folks. I came here to do my job and now I’m handcuffed.”
The arrest was condemned by Andrew Lawton, the president of the Independent Press Gallery of Canada. (Lawton is also True North’s managing editor).
“Police are there to uphold the law and public safety, not to prevent politicians from being asked questions by journalists who the government will not permit to ask questions in official settings,” Lawton said in a statement Monday night.
“The Independent Press Gallery calls on police, particularly those tasked with protecting elected officials, to cease the practice of arresting working journalists who are not posing a threat to public safety or breaking the law.”
This incident marks the second time Menzies has faced difficulties for attempting to question the Trudeau government.
Two years ago, he was accosted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s bodyguards on a public street in Toronto.

London Vocational School Controversy:
I see there's been some fishy business behind the closing of Davison vocational school as they transition into an adult education centre. Janine Davison's petition has not changed the politics, although the final decision has not been made. Meanwhile I read, "Amid a significant skilled labor shortage in the US, Catholic trade schools are emerging nationwide. Most students can graduate debt-free". What's wrong with this picture? Ontario has a shortage of trade workers too. Thames Valley District School Board staff justified the closing by this statement, "More vocational programs are being offered through neighbourhood high schools where there is no social stigma." So it's all about celebrating diversity and inclusion. Tell that to all the new popular trade school students in the States, how they're being stigmatized. Baloney. The TVDSB decision is just one more example of our school boards and educators becoming social engineers. I'm glad the Church in the USA still realizes that's their job.

Famous for his poem about The Long Dark Night of the Soul, it seems odd that John would say the above after all the betrayals and tortures he went through.
I read a book written by a Christian psychiatrist about "the long dark night of the soul". The doctor spoke of the blessing that can come with the confusing mind-fog. You may not feel that it draws you closer to God but, if you reach out to others, the darkness can draw you closer to them, and this is very healthy to let others help you. It's humbling. God uses it to build community and communion. The doctor said only others can help determine if it's a beneficial depression or a serious psychiatric problem requiring help from a professional. You'll never figure it out for yourself.

But feelings have their place or God would not have given them to us. I've included music as part of my life, which includes prayer and worship. Sometimes it's a Sabbath experience, just pushing all the usual things aside and indulging in listening to music which brings me back in contact with my feelings. I can experience tears even. Daily I sing a worship song during my prayer time. Those thoughts stick like glue. The Psalms are full of music which David played to calm King Saul as well as his own soul.
There's a time to sing and a time for quiet; and do both before the Lord, even if you don't see Him.
