Morning Update:

Convoy protest posed no national threat to security, CSIS told Ottawa:

Canada’s spy agency [CSIS] told the government before it invoked the Emergencies Act that convoy protests against vaccine mandates last winter did not meet the national security threat level required to trigger the sweeping powers.

Canadian Security Intelligence Service director David Vigneault told a cabinet committee meeting the day before the act was invoked that the protests did not reach the threat level that the Emergencies Act relies on, according to an interview summary tabled yesterday at the inquiry examining the act’s use. The meeting of what’s called cabinet’s Incident Response Group was chaired by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. [Globe & Mail Media]

News Max BREAKING NEWS:

Note:

Democrat Katie Hobbs was elected Arizona governor Monday by less than 1 percentage point, defeating an ally of former President Donald Trump.

Hobbs received 50.39% of the vote versus 49.61% for Republican Kari Lake, according to Newsmax calculations.

Hobbs, Arizona’s secretary of state waged a campaign warning that her Republican rival, a former television news anchor and staunch Trump supporter, would be an agent of chaos.

Hobbs will succeed Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, who was prohibited by term limit laws from running again. She’s the first Democrat to be elected governor in Arizona since Janet Napolitano in 2006.

“For the Arizonans who did not vote for me, I will work just as hard for you — because even in this moment of division, I believe there is so much more that connects us,” Hobbs said in a statement declaring victory. “This was not just about an election — it was about moving this state forward and facing the challenges of our generation.”

After Hobbs' win was called Monday, Trump weighed in with a post on social media platform Truth Social: "Wow! They just took the election away from Kari Lake. It’s really bad out there!" [News Max Media]

Modesty in Russia:

Wow. That is so beautiful, that the Russian women want to follow their Church's guidelines for modesty. They do truly honour our Lord.

It’s Sunday. You throw on your brown shabby skirt and black shabbier blouse and gray shabbiest scarf and slink to church with your eyes downcast, humble as can be. You are the true Russian Christian woman, aren’t you?

Wrong. Russian women are done being shamed for dressing “too” nicely for church. They are tired of trying to sew in fabric to cover up plunging necklines or wading through hundreds of mini dresses to find a cute maxi dress without cut-outs. They are also tired of people equating conservative with miserable and gloomy and all-in-all ugly.

They want clothes:

· that fit with their life choices,

· their moral standard,

· with who and what they want to be;

· clothes that reflect their goals,

· their roles,

· their beliefs.

Often, that means clothes that reflect their personal choice: to first and foremost be mothers and wives. In any case, they want options. And while these clothes lines aim to bring back traditional understandings of virtue and develop a Christian culture of dressing, they also provide interesting options for women who prefer vintage, boho and/or ethnic styles.

When I was in Russia this summer, I noticed more and more women in long dresses in the streets. When I mentioned this trend to an American guy-friend, he asked, “are they both modern and modest?” [Russian Faith – Christian Renascence]

GOP senators look for new leadership following midterm defeat:

A group of Republican Senators is making a push to oust Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) from his leadership position, Politico reports.

The group, at least, includes Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Rick Scott (R-FL).

The push is being made ahead of the GOP Senate leadership elections that are scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

At the moment, the group of senators is trying to get these leadership elections delayed. Cruz, Rubio, and Hawley have been publicly pushing for a delay through messages released on Twitter, while Johnson, Lee, and Scott are working behind the scenes trying to get other Republican Senators on board.

Part of why these Republican senators want a delay is because the Georgia U.S. Senate race, between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Republican Herschel Walker, has yet to be decided. A runoff election is scheduled for early December.

But the Republican senators also appear to be seeking a delay in order to give them more time to convince their colleagues to move away from McConnell’s leadership.

Rubio suggested as much in a Twitter message, saying:

The Senate GOP leadership vote next week should be postponed. First, we need to make sure that those who want to lead us are genuinely committed to fighting for the priorities & values of the working Americans (of every background) who gave us big wins in states like #Florida.

But, in case there was any doubt, Hawley on Saturday – after Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto’s victory, which ensures that the Democrats will maintain control of the Senate said, “the old party is dead. Time to bury it. Build something new.”

The senators have ample reason to move away from McConnell’s leadership, including his refusal to actively support a number of Republican Senate candidates in key races in the midterm elections. But the overall problem that Republicans have with McConnell is that it would seem that he no longer represents their interests.

McConnell, in the background, appears to be trying to head this challenge off, and one of the ways that he is doing so is by trying to force the leadership elections to take place as scheduled on Wednesday. Fox reports that “a Senate GOP aide” confirmed that the elections “will go on as planned.”

As things currently stand, it does not appear as if Cruz, Hawley, and the others will have enough support from their fellow Senate Republicans to oust McConnell from his Senate leadership role. All that is needed for McConnell to remain in that position is the support of a simple majority of Senate Republicans, and it does seem that he has that kind of support.

So, it appears as though Republicans looking to move away from the likes of McConnell are going to have to wait a bit longer.

Carville:

MI Gov. Gretchen Whitmer a ‘very serious’ contender to replace Biden:

Though there has been much discussion about Vice President Kamala Harris’ electoral prospects should President Joe Biden decide not to seek a second term in 2024, longtime Democrat consultant and pundit James Carville suggested this week that Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) should not be overlooked as his possible replacement, as Breitbart reports.

Carville’s remarks came Thursday during an appearance on MSNBC’s The ReidOut in which he assessed his party’s midterm election results and what they might mean for the next presidential cycle.

Show host Joy Reid kicked off the conversation, declaring, “I feel the media has overplayed the importance of [Republican Gov. Ron] DeSantis and underplayed the victory for Whitmer,” referencing the former’s landslide Tuesday re-election win against Democrat Charlie Crist.

“Whitmer, to me, was the biggest single individual winner on election day because…she survived real threats to democracy in her state, got reelected by a healthy margin, and took over the state,” Reid said, noting the Michigan Democrat’s victory over Republican challenger Tudor Dixon in an election that also saw both chambers of the state legislature turn blue.

Carville, known to many as the “Ragin’ Cajun,” appeared to sign on to Reid’s premise without reservation, saying, “First of all, for 2024, 2028, she’s already in the talk of being a very serious presidential candidate if she runs. I think people really understand what she’s done and how tough she is.”

“I think Gretchen Whitmer is at the top of any conversation about any national figure of the Democratic Party. That is just a fact,” added Carville.

This is not the first time the liberal Michigan governor has been the subject of intense speculation over her potential future on the national stage, with Biden himself having placed her on his shortlist for vice presidential candidates back in 2020, as the Los Angeles Times reported at the time.

Despite the obvious confidence Carville and Reid have in Whitmer’s political skills, however, not everyone is equally impressed, as was evidenced by a widely mocked television appearance on Monday in which the Michigan governor was accused of evading questions about her highly controversial lockdown policies during the pandemic, as Fox News noted.

Fox 2 Detroit anchor Josh Landon inquired of Whitmer, “Governor, when it comes to your handling of the pandemic, we all know the critics over the past few years, do you have any regrets, and…?” at which point, the Democrat awkwardly clutched at her earpiece and gave the appearance of having lost the audio feed.

The cringeworthy display caught the attention of Dixon, who sarcastically expressed her hope that her rival could “get back on the air to answer this question about her disastrous COVID policies (or will the equipment mysteriously malfunction again?).”

Talk of Whitmer as a contender in 2024 may already be moot, however, given Biden’s Wednesday declaration that he intends to seek re-election and that an announcement of his final decision could come early next year, according to The Hill.

If, however, that does not come to pass, Whitmer would still have to contend with the continued presence on the scene of Biden’s presumed heir apparent – the beleaguered Harris – whose husband Doug Emhoff is, according to Politico, already lecturing party leaders about their supposed obligation to back his wife for the top job, should her current boss step aside.

The Canadian government is here to help!

Canada is going to allow assisted suicide for healthy people with mental illness beginning in 2023

Changes are being made to Medical Assitance in Dying (MAID) which will expand eligibility criteria to eliminate the "reasonable foreseeability of natural death" criterion. This means that it will no longer be required for a person's death to be reasonably foreseeable to receive MAID services. The government of Canada's website says that those whose only medical condition is a mental illness will not be eligible for MAID until March 2023, meaning that it will be fully available for those with just a mental condition after that date.
