(LifeSiteNews) — New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan is praising not only Donald Trump for his “Christian faith” but America as a whole.
“There seems to be a newfound appreciation for the role of faith, especially in our country,” Dolan said this past weekend on Sunday Morning Futures. “I think President Trump tapped into that.”
Trump, who identifies as a non-denominational Christian, repeatedly gave credit to God for narrowly escaping an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13.
“I’m not supposed to be here tonight … I stand before you in this arena only by the grace of Almighty God,” he said at the Republican National Convention this summer.
“Having recently survived two assassination attempts, I have a fresh appreciation of how blessed we are by God’s Providence and His divine mercy,” Trump told attendees at the Al Smith Dinner in New York City, which Dolan organized.
“Many people have told me,” Trump also proclaimed in his November 6 election victory speech in Florida, “that God spared my life for a reason, and that reason was to save our country and restore America to greatness.”
Trump’s wife Melania, who supports LGBT and pro-abortion policies but identifies as a Catholic, has similarly described her husbands’ survival of two assassination attempts as “miracles.”
Dolan made his remarks while being interviewed by Catholic Fox News anchor Maria Bartoromo at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. He also said he has spoken privately with Trump about his beliefs.
“I’ve had talks with him before in the past where he’s pretty blunt about, you know, he can’t say that he was raised as a very zealous Christian,” Dolan said. “But he takes his Christian faith seriously.”
“I think the assassination attempts kind of renewed in him, ‘Oh my, there’s something beyond me that I think is watching over me, and it’s got a task for me.’ And what he expresses personally seems to be expressed more and more throughout the world. And that’s part of America,” the cardinal added.
While most commentators would agree that Trump’s victory over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris was a significant blow to the woke left, his backing of the pro-homosexual Log Cabin Republicans, his support for in-vitro fertilization, his unrelenting defense of Operation Warp Speed, and his continued weakening on abortion have left many religious Americans wondering if he truly does understand or even care about what Christianity teaches.
At the same time, Trump’s supporters will point out that he has has consistently pursued a foreign policy rooted in peace, pledged to ban “sex change” surgeries for children, is pursuing steps to help make food healthy and review childhood vaccination, and has promised Catholics and other religious Americans that the FBI will no longer be used to discriminate against them.
Following Trump’s victory, former U.S. Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò said that “the success of the ‘greatest reset’ represented by the election of Donald Trump and the defeat of the radical Left will also depend on how well the people and their rulers can conform to God’s will.” He must surround himself with good advisers, work with world leaders who oppose the New World Order, and “not forget that the defense of life, from the first moment of conception to natural death, must be a priority goal,” the archbishop said.

Grills NCAA President on men in women’s sports
The issue of men in women’s sports turned into a national debate when a biological male calling himself Lia Thomas began dominating women’s swimming events.
When Thomas swam as a man for the University of Pennsylvania, he ranked 554th in the 200m freestyle, 65th in the 500m freestyle, and 32nd in the 1650m freestyle.
To no one’s surprise, once Thomas claimed to be a woman and competing in women’s events Thomas ranked fifth in the 200m freestyle, first in the 500m freestyle, and eight in the 1650m freestyle.
The obvious unfairness of biological men in women’s sports stood out to everyone except the woke Left.
Donald Trump won the 2024 election in large part due to a backlash against the Left pushing the idea of men in women’s sports.
NCAA President Charlie Baker testified before the Senate and faced a hostile group of Republicans eager to grill him over why the NCAA let biological men like Lia Thomas compete against women.
Senator Kenedy began his questioning simply enough.
“A transgender woman is a biological male, is that correct?” Kennedy asked.“Yes,” Baker replied.
Kennedy moved on from there to the next obvious point.
“And a biological male is always going to have a physical and a physiological advantage competing in a collegiate sport against a biological female. Is that true?” Kennedy wondered.
This is where Baker went off the rails.
“There’s not a lot of research on it, but it’s certainly debatable,” Baker replied.
Kennedy was flummoxed that Baker would give such a ridiculous answer.
“Wait, you don’t think that a biological male has an advantage every time competing against a biological female? Is that your testimony?” Kennedy inquired.
Baker quickly realized he sounded like a fool and backtracked.
“No, I think defined the way you defined it, yes, I would agree with you,” Baker clarified.
That set up Kennedy for the obvious question of why the NCAA allowed biological men to compete in women’s sports.
“Okay, so why does the NCAA, why do you, your job is to promote fairness in collegiate sports, why do you support allowing transgender women who are biological males to compete against non-transgender biological females?” Kennedy wondered.
Baker tried to blame it on the courts.
“Over the course of the past two years, five federal court cases involving this question, let me finish, five federal judges have all sided with participation as the standard. This is a very…” Baker began.
Kennedy asked if Baker was trying to pass the buck, to which Baker effectively replied that he was.
“I’m saying that under the current dynamic, there is not clarity on this issue legally,” Baker stated.
Kennedy wasn’t going to accept that and told Baker the NCAA should take leadership for once and put rules in place banning men from women’s sports.
“Why don’t you exhibit leadership and demonstrate leadership and provide clarity? If you agree with me that the purpose of the NCAA is to promote fair competition, and if you agree with me that in every single instance, a biological male is going to have an unfair advantage over a biological female, then why don’t you just say, look, in America, you can be whomever you want to be, but in terms of fair competition and a collegiate sport, transgender women who are biological males are not going to be allowed to compete against non-transgender women who are biological female,” Kennedy declared.“Boom, done. Why don’t you take that position, Charlie?” Kennedy concluded.
But Baker fell back on the fear of getting sued and showed the NCAA would remain gutless on this issue.
“Because federal courts have already taken the position that they do have the right to compete,” Baker stated.

The Durham Regional Police Association is adding to the growing number of people and organizations calling for an election and for the prime minister to step down.
The GTA police union joined the Toronto Police Association, the largest police union in Canada, in calling for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign.
The Toronto police union released a statement on Tuesday calling for Trudeau’s resignation and criticizing a recently announced crime plan as “laughable.” The Toronto Police Association responded to a social media post by Liberal cabinet minister Anita Anand, who shared a list of the government’s proposals to fix issues in Canada’s criminal justice system.
She said the Liberal government is proposing amendments to the Criminal Code to ensure repeat, violent offenders “are held accountable,” to add stricter bail conditions for violent crimes and to grant the Canada Border Services Agency “further authority” to inspect goods set for export.
The Toronto Police Association’s post, which the Durham police union said it “echoed,” criticized this move, saying the union has lost all faith in the government to fix the problems that it created.
Notably, the government relaxed bail conditions with Bill C-75, which emphasized “restraint” for courts and police imposing bail conditions in an attempt to reduce the “overrepresentation of vulnerable populations.”
“Empty promises and platitudes have very little meaning and continue to be disingenuous to our members and the members of the general public,” the Durham Regional Police Association said in a post on X Wednesday. “Violent crimes, gun offences and the lack of actual bail reform do nothing but endanger the public, officers and society as a whole.”
“It’s time we elect a Government that will follow through with much-needed change instead of empty promises.”
The Durham Regional Police Association also criticized the government’s decision to add to Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc’s duties by naming him finance minister as well. The portfolio was added to LeBlanc’s plate Monday following Chrystia Freeland’s abrupt resignation from cabinet just hours before she was set to deliver the government’s Fall Economic Statement.
“Adding portfolios to the Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc takes away their ability to focus on their preexisting agendas,” the Durham police association said in a post.
Abacus poll data from a survey conducted Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning, when Freeland resigned, found that 58% of Canadians want an immediate election. And 67% of Canadians agree with the two police unions and think that Trudeau should resign.

Canadian Gov’t Budget Report targets Charitable Status of Pro-Life Groups, & Churches:
A Pre-Budget Consultations in Advance of the 2025 Budget report recommends no longer providing charitable status to anti-abortion organizations and amending the Income Tax Act to remove the privileged status of 'advancement of religion' as a charitable purpose.
(LifeSiteNews) — In 2022, I wrote an essay titled “What is coming next for Canadian churches?” In that essay, as well as in my recent book How We Got Here, I noted that as Canada shifted from being a post-Christian society to an increasingly anti-Christian one, Christian churches and organizations will inevitably lose tax-exempt or charitable status:
Churches and other religious institutions that refuse to bend the knee will likely lose their tax-exempt status at some point. Canadian LGBT activists have been making this case for years, and it is only a matter of time before the idea catches on or – more likely – a progressive politician decides that the time is right. I suspect that a key reason this has not yet been discussed is the awkward fact that many non-Christian institutions hold similar positions on marriage, sexuality, and abortion.
That said, I have no doubt that a way to target churches specifically will be worked out. LGBT activists are already asking why the government is “rewarding bigotry” by awarding tax-exempt status to churches with a traditional view of sexuality, and LGBT activists have publicized sermons they disagree with as evidence of hatred. The churches and the state are on a collision course, and it isn’t hard to guess how this will end.
We may be seeing the first move in that direction.
With the Christmas season upon us and Ottawa in chaos, few Canadians noticed the government’s publication of “Pre-Budget Consultations In Advance of the 2025 Budget,” the report of the Standing Committee on Finance. The report of annual pre-budget consultations included 462 recommendations that have been tabled and, according to the Standing Committee, will be taken into account by “the Minister of Finance in the development of the 2025 federal budget” (which, if Trudeau is still in power, will be Dominic LeBlanc).
Two recommendations included in that report are deeply concerning, and the Christian Legal Fellowship has written to both the Minister of Finance and the Finance Committee Chair Peter Fonseca to express that concern:
Recommendation 429: No longer provide charitable status to anti-abortion organizations.
Recommendation 430: Amend the Income Tax Act to provide a definition of a charity which would remove the privileged status of ‘advancement of religion’ as a charitable purpose.
Those two recommendations, of course, were buried at the very end of the report. The first is unsurprising – Trudeau’s government is currently targeting crisis pregnancy centers that assist moms and babies in need, so it was inevitable that the government was eventually going to target local Right to Life organizations and other pro-life groups that still have charitable status.
More brazen is the recommendation that the Income Tax Act be amended to eliminate “advancement of religion” as a charitable purpose – this could, according to the Christian Legal Fellowship, “have a devastating impact, not only on the 32,000+ religious charities in this country, but the millions of Canadians they serve.” CLF urged the government “to reject any such approach and clarify exactly what is being contemplated.” As CLF noted in their letter:
Religious charities account for nearly 40% of all charities in Canada, including churches, mosques, temples, synagogues, and other faith communities, operating programs such as soup kitchens, shelters, refugee homes, and food banks. They provide indispensable social, economic, and spiritual support, filling a significant gap in our communities and meeting the needs of millions of Canadians.
Suggesting that such organizations must do something other than “advance religion” to be considered charitable ignores the reality that these services are themselves the very manifestation of religious beliefs, inherent to and inextricable from the charity’s religion itself. It also betrays a long-standing recognition of the intrinsic goods provided by religious communities, who offer people hope, encouragement, and belonging in ways that simply cannot be quantified or replaced. Ultimately, any efforts to substitute their much-needed services would place an extraordinary strain on all levels of government.
I have no doubt that the Trudeau government is willing to purse these recommendations regardless; these plans, however, may be thwarted by the next election. Trudeau no doubt remembers the Canada Summer Jobs Program fight, when his government insisted that recipients sign an attestation of support for abortion and LGBT ideology and suddenly found themselves facing angry imams, rabbis, and other religious leaders instead of just the priests and pastors they’d assumed would be impacted. It seems unlikely that going after religious charities is a fight Trudeau wants now.
Trudeau will, however, be campaigning on abortion – it’s the wedge issue he returns to again and again as the PMO increasingly resembles Custer’s Last Stand. Thus, Recommendation 429 may be taken up sooner rather than later. Either way, these two recommendations are essentially a statement of purpose. The Liberals may not get to them just now but be assured that this is what progressives intend to do just as soon as they get the chance.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — Outgoing President Joe Biden announced December 19 a new climate target of reducing American carbon emissions of more than 60% over the next decade, even though returning President Donald Trump would be able to undo it as soon as next month.
“Today, as the United States continues to accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy, President Biden is announcing a new climate target for the United States: a 61-66 percent reduction in 2035 from 2005 levels in economy-wide net greenhouse gas emissions,” the White House announced, the Washington Free Beacon reports. The new target will be formally submitted to the United Nations Climate Change secretariat.
“President Biden’s new 2035 climate goal is both a reflection of what we’ve already accomplished,” Biden climate adviser John Podesta added, “and what we believe the United States can and should achieve in the future.”
The announcement may be little more than a symbolic gesture in the end, however, as Trump is widely expected to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement upon resuming office in January, in the process voiding related climate obligations.
Trump formally pulled out of the Paris accords in August 2017, the first year of his first term, with then-U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley stating that the administration would be “open to re-engaging in the Paris Agreement if the United States can identify terms that are more favorable to it, its business, its workers, its people, and its taxpayers.”
Such terms were never reached, however, leaving America out until Biden re-committed the nation to the Paris Agreement on the first day of his presidency, obligating U.S. policy to new economic regulations to cut carbon emissions.
In June, the Trump campaign confirmed Trump’s intentions to withdraw from Paris again. At the time, Trump’s team was reportedly mulling a number of non-finalized drafts of executive orders to do so.
Left-wing consternation on the matter is based on certitude in “anthropogenic global warming” (AGW) or “climate change,” the thesis that human activity, rather than natural phenomena, is primarily responsible for Earth’s changing climate and that such trends pose a danger to the planet in the form of rising sea levels and weather instability.
Activists have long claimed there is a “97 percent scientific consensus” in favor of AGW, but that number comes from a distortion of an overview of 11,944 papers from peer-reviewed journals, 66.4 percent of which expressed no opinion on the question; in fact, many of the authors identified with the AGW “consensus” later spoke out to say their positions had been misrepresented.
AGW proponents suffered a blow in 2010 with the discovery that their leading researchers at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, East Anglia Climate Research Unit, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had engaged in widespread data manipulation, flawed climate models, misrepresentation of sources, and suppression of dissenting findings in order to make the so-called “settled science” say what climate activists wanted it to.

From Sudbury Ontario here and I can say its absolutely 100% the same here. Gas stations, convenience stores, drugs stores, dollar stores, fast food franchises, everywhere. These people come, buy up the store, can the workers and bring in their own.
Our children, as they approach the age they can start working in some of these places as a first job they cannot find work anywhere. Absolutely ridiculous and shameful. Our country is falling apart at the seams, and it won’t be long before we (Canadians) are the ones getting booted out of our own country.
Canada has become overrun with East Indians. It’s sad really what Canada has become in the time of this Liberal government. I honestly don’t think Canada will recover from this mess that has been created.
I can tell you from experience my own kids (who were born in Canada) COULD NOT get a job at any fast food place, retail, because they weren’t “immigrants” or “international students” or “refugees” or “whatever” ….
They weren’t just too Canadian to find a normal McDonald’s job as a teenager. Something that used to be fairly easy to get as teens before the last 10 years took place. Walmart, convenience stores, gas stations, every food franchise, etc. etc., they don’t hire Canadians, they hire the above listed “temp workers” or “hire” family members that don’t get paid properly or work as card as someone else who is not related to them would work.

“Biden has remained conspicuously absent outside a brief statement issued by his press secretary — and for now, Democrats said there was little clamor for him to return,” Politico reports.
The article followed a dramatic day in Washington, marked by Elon Musk and President-elect Donald Trump derailing what would have been the first bipartisan spending bill in years.
Despite the urgent need to prevent a government shutdown, Politico noted that “no one seemed to be looking to Biden for answers — and the lame-duck president gave no indication he had any desire to provide them.”
California Democratic Rep. Mark Takano confirmed the sentiment, saying, “I haven’t gotten any message from President Biden, or heard of anything that he’s saying.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was equally reserved, stating that he’s only been in “close contact with the administration” but refraining from confirming any direct communication with Biden himself.
As Politico observed, “Democrats appeared largely fine with Biden taking a back seat.”
Even during a caucus meeting among House Democrats, Biden’s stance on the funding deadlock wasn’t a topic of discussion.
Instead, members reportedly referred to Elon Musk as “President Musk” in a pointed acknowledgment of his outsized influence in the unfolding crisis.
Biden’s allies are arguing that his silence is intentional, part of a “strategic decision” designed to place Trump at the center of the blame for any potential government shutdown.
The strategy, they contend, could weaken Trump politically before he even assumes office.
Nevertheless, the report revealed that Democrats have only communicated with White House staff during this period, with no confirmation of direct input from the president.
On Wednesday, Biden spent the day at his Wilmington, Delaware, residence while the bipartisan spending bill failed.
He stayed there through Thursday, maintaining a low profile with no events on his public schedule.
Politico framed the president’s absence as emblematic of a larger reality: “[T]he president’s absence highlights a jarring reality that officials in both parties said has become clear since the November election: While Biden technically still runs the country, Trump — and increasingly Musk — are the real captains now.”
Democrats, meanwhile, are reportedly pinning their hopes on shifting blame for a potential shutdown onto Trump and “President Musk.”
The Politico report came on the heels of a Wall Street Journal exposé, which revealed that some of Biden’s staff had observed signs of his weakening stamina as early as 2021, during the initial months of his presidency.
This raises questions about how much the media and White House staff covered up Joe Biden’s cognitive decline throughout his term.

It found that the massive cost of these three programs comprised just 3.7% of CBC’s coverage, and 4.1% of CTV’s coverage.
Patrick – 95%+ of the combined coverage from two of the largest news broadcast organizations in Canada made NO REFERENCE about how the government plans to PAY for these programs.
With that in mind, is it really surprising that a huge number of Canadians think that such programs are “free”?
Or that the government can simply send endless cheques to Canadians with no consequence?
And then, when you consider that both CBC and CTV are the recipients of handouts and bailouts from the Trudeau government, you can be forgiven for thinking this might all be by design.
It is clear that if Canadians want the truth, they need to turn to independent media.

USDA Announces Recall on More Than 10,000 Pounds of Pork Products Across 4 States:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced two separate recalls for pork products, both raw and ready-to-eat, sold in four states across the U.S. The first recall impacts Oklahoma shoppers who have purchased Ralph’s Circle R brand ready-to-eat bologna products. The second recall affects Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania retailers and restaurants that are selling Old World Italian Sausage.
Ralph's Recalls More Than 3,000 Pounds of Bologna
In Oklahoma, Ralph’s Packing Company is recalling 3,132 pounds of its ready-to-eat pork and bologna products because the meat may contain milk, but a milk allergen is not listed on the packaging. The recalled meat is Ralph’s Circle R brand Garlic Bologna and Garlic Bologna with Jalapeños, which has been produced since September 2022 and FSIS is concerned they may still be in some people and establishment's refrigerators or freezers.
To identify the recalled bologna, look for the establishment number EST. 51557 inside the USDA mark of inspection, as well as the following lot codes:
· Ralph’s Circle R Brand Garlic Bologna: 0093, 0654, 0804, 1074, 1153, 1224, 1374, 1774, 1924, 2572, 2974, 3132, and 3483
· Ralph’s Circle R Brand Garlic Bologna with Jalapeños: 0804, 1074, 1224, 1233, 1354, 2184, and 3374

The recalled bologna was sold in 16-ounce or larger vacuum-sealed chubs to both retailers and food service locations. The USDA also says the recalled bologna might have been sliced and served at deli counters.
There haven’t been any reports of allergic reactions or adverse effects caused by eating the bologna, but Ralph’s recalled the products out of an abundance of caution because the undeclared milk allergen can cause serious or life-threatening reactions in those with milk allergies or sensitivities. The USDA has also urged retailers, deli counters, and food service locations to stop selling the recalled meat.
If you have a milk allergy or sensitivity, you should not consume the bologna. Instead, throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
If you don’t have a milk allergy or sensitivity, you don’t have to stop eating the bologna. The meat was recalled for a misbranding error and not because anything is inherently unsafe about the products.

FSIS was notified of a company producing products on a suspended grant of inspection. FSIS performed an inspection at the retailer and after review, determined that the Old World Italian Sausage links and ropes produced by Impero Food & Meats Inc. were not inspected by FSIS and initiated the recall.
The Old World Sausage links and ropes were shipped in 10-pound cardboard boxes to retailers and food service locations in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. And, the USDA says, the sausage may have been sold in deli counters without labels or identification.
Food service locations and retailers can determine if they have the recalled sausage by looking for the establishment number EST. 10827 on the cardboard box. The USDA is urging retailers and food service locations to stop selling the meat and instead throw it away.
If you are a customer who has purchased “Old World Sausage” with an undisclosed brand from a deli counter between Oct. 2, 2024, and Dec. 19, 2024, you should not consume it. Instead, throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
There haven’t been any reports of illnesses or adverse reactions caused by eating the sausage, but if you have any health-related questions, you should contact your healthcare provider.

With Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s tenure looking increasingly tenuous, a number of people are presumably eyeing the top Liberal role and considering running for the leadership.
Will the future party leader come from within the cadre of ministers who have served for years under Trudeau? Or will it be someone outside the current caucus who may take the party in a new direction?
Ministers considering a run face the challenging task of offering change while defending their record amid falling poll numbers. Requirements of cabinet solidarity also set boundaries regarding what can be said in public around leadership issues.
A Former Deputy
Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland freed herself from cabinet solidarity when she resigned last week, taking shots at Trudeau and attempting to separate herself from the government’s fiscal agenda.
In her Dec. 16 resignation letter to Trudeau posted on social media, Freeland accused him of using “costly political gimmicks” at a time when the country should keep its finances in check to prepare for a trade war with the incoming U.S. administration.
Freeland’s resignation also widened a rift in the Liberal caucus, mounting calls for Trudeau to resign, while some MPs have also publicly backed her as future party leader.
This includes Prince Edward Island MP Sean Casey, who was among the first to publicly call for Trudeau’s resignation, and Ontario MP Chandra Arya, who had initially defended Trudeau during the mini-caucus revolt in October.

Some cabinet members, like Justice Minister Arif Virani, lauded Freeland’s time in government after her resignation but didn’t answer directly when he was asked by reporters whether he wants Trudeau to stay on.
Freeland said in her letter that she intends to run in the next election, unlike Housing Minister Sean Fraser, who has said he is resigning from cabinet and isn’t planning to run again.
The move by Freeland resulted in multiple ripple effects that could impact an eventual leadership contest. For one, it led to former Bank of Canada governor and potential contender Mark Carney’s decision not to enter government, as had been rumoured to happen.
It also made Dominic LeBlanc a more prominent figure in Trudeau’s cabinet as a “fixer,” taking on the role of finance minister hours after Freeland’s resignation,. Trudeau has also tasked him with addressing the border security issues at the centre of incoming U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threats.
Serving Ministers
Ministers tend to keep their political ambitions private, but one cabinet minister may have hinted that she’s interested in the leadership job by way of an interview with a U.S. publication in early December.
“Tapped by Trudeau to Steer Foreign Affairs, She’s Now His Possible Successor,” reads a New York Times (NYT) headline for an article profiling Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly. Joly doesn’t specifically say she’s running, but she is quoted as saying she should not be “underestimated.”
Joly doesn’t appear to have spoken to media since Freeland’s resignation. When asked about a potential leadership bid by CTV News after the NYT article was published, she didn’t directly deny being interested.
“My goal is to get re-elected in the next election, and to be representing Ahuntsic-Cartierville (Que.), and I think that is a prerequisite to any other political engagement,” she said.
Joly became foreign affairs minister in the fall of 2021 and was tasked with rebuilding ties with Beijing after Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were freed from arbitrary detention in China as part of the Huawei-Meng Wanzhou affair. Joly has had to handle other thorny files, such as the rift with India this year. Following the Israel-Hamas war, she has also overseen Canada changing its traditional stance of backing Israel at the United Nations.
Other cabinet ministers who could be potential leadership contenders include LeBlanc, Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne, and Transport Minister Anita Anand.
LeBlanc briefly considered running for the leadership of the party in 2008 before dropping out and endorsing Michael Ignatieff.
Trudeau relied on LeBlanc to help stave off the threat of U.S. tariffs by preparing a border plan, and also elevated him to oversee Canada’s finances after Freeland resigned. However, LeBlanc could be seen by Trudeau detractors as being too close to the prime minister. The two have been friends for decades.
Anand, meanwhile, seemed to distance herself from Trudeau when she first commented on Freeland’s resignation.
“I'll just say that Chrystia Freeland is a good friend, someone I worked with very, very closely as president of the Treasury Board and Minister of Transport,” she said on Dec. 16. “This news has hit me really hard.”
Anand lost the Treasury Board portfolio in the Dec. 20 cabinet shuffle but retained the transport portfolio she took on after Pablo Rodriguez left cabinet and caucus in the summer. She had previously been defence minister, from October 2021 until the July 2023 shuffle.
Champagne, meanwhile, has been in the role of industry minister for nearly four years, since January 2021. He has the longest record for a minister keeping the same portfolio.
The minister is usually talkative when speaking with reporters, but he kept it brief when asked about Freeland’s resignation and whether he has confidence in Trudeau.
“We'll make sure that we focus on what matters to Canadians,” Champagne said on Dec. 16.
Outsiders
Other than current and former ministers, Carney is most often mentioned as a potential successor to Trudeau who is not currently involved in federal politics.
Trudeau said this summer that he’s been trying to recruit Carney to the Liberals’ ranks “for years,” and in September appointed Carney as his special economic adviser within the Liberal Party.
Carney has not denied being interested in running for public office. “The opportunity may present itself,” he responded to Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith on the MP’s podcast when asked whether he will run for a House of Commons seat.
Carney is currently board chair of Brookfield Asset Management as well as the global investment firm’s head of transition investing. He also serves as the United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Change and Finance. He has previously served as central bank governor in both Canada and the UK.
