The EU digs in for two years, with Putin squarely in its sights. The European Union just approved its first-ever military training mission to help Ukraine resist the ongoing invasion from Vladimir Putin's Russian military. It could be up and running in a matter of weeks, and it's intended to last for at least 24 months.
The new element will be headquartered in Brussels, and will be led by French Navy Vice Adm. Hervé Bléjean. His team will have an initial two-year mandate and will operate on a budget of €106,700,000. The ostensible goal is "to contribute to enhancing the military capability of Ukraine's Armed Forces to effectively conduct military operations, in order to allow Ukraine to defend its territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, effectively exercise its sovereignty and protect civilians," the EU Council said in a statement Monday.
"The mission's purpose is to train around 15,000 troops to start with—maybe more, but the first objective is to train 15,000 troops," said the EU's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, on Monday. If everything goes according to plan, the training mission will be operational by mid-November. The bloc also set aside another tranche of €500 million for Ukraine's military, through the European Peace Facility, which raises the bloc's contributions to Kyiv's military to over €3 billion so far.
Developing: Both the EU and the Pentagon are reportedly looking for ways to help Elon Musk fund Starlink, which Musk said Friday has cost $80 million to date, and could be as much as $20 million each month. "To be precise, 25,300 terminals were sent to Ukraine, but, at present, only 10,630 are paying for service," Musk tweeted Monday. He also replied to Politico's Monday reporting about alleged Pentagon funding by writing, "SpaceX has already withdrawn its request." Democrats Sound Alarm on Midterms: 'We Peaked a Little Early':
New polling has some Democrat operatives worried momentum is leaving the party as the November midterm elections draw ever closer, Politico reported Monday.
Democrats had benefited from a jump in support following the Supreme Court's overruling of Roe v. Wade in June, specifically among women; however, 21 days from the midterms, the party is trailing in two critical surveys.
A poll conducted by YouGov for CBS News shows Republicans leading Democrats by two percentage points, 47% to 45%. That translates to an estimated Republican majority of six seats, one more than predicted in September.
Meanwhile, The New York Times poll conducted by Siena College shows Republicans up four points, 49% to 45%. That is a substantial change of pace from last month when the same poll had Democrats up two, 46% to 44%.
"I'm wishing the election were in August," Matt Bennett, executive vice president for public affairs at Third Way, told Politico. "I think we peaked a little early."
Progressive advertising and marketing expert Mark Longabaugh, a former member of Sen. Bernie Sanders' 2016 Democrat presidential campaign, vocalized similar concerns.
"Look, man, I've been at this for 30 years, and it is always the period in late September and early October when an election starts to tilt and move," Longabaugh stated. "So, we're at that moment, and I don't think you can look at these numbers across the country and say anything, but it looks like it's moving in [the] Republicans' direction." [News Max]

Ford strips powers away from local Councilors:
Ontario will expand the so-called strong mayor powers to other large municipalities in a year, Premier Doug Ford said Monday.
The province recently passed legislation that gives mayors of Toronto and Ottawa veto power over bylaws that conflict with provincial priorities, such as building housing.
Those powers are set to take effect shortly after next week's municipal elections.
Why do I smell Soros? Hint, when Toronto's John Tory like the new power but leading candidates for mayor in Ottawa say no.
Could it be that the title of the new legislation actually means the opposite? "Strong mayors" = weak mayors because they will be obligated to do what the province wants, instead of locally elected councilors.
