JUST IN: Trump Scores Momentous Legal Victory

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals delivered a major win for President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown this week, ruling that the IRS can share certain taxpayer information with the Department of Homeland Security to help identify and deport illegal immigrants.


In a decision that strengthens federal enforcement authority, the court found that existing law does not create a blanket shield protecting illegal immigrants’ tax records from being used in lawful immigration investigations.


At the center of the case was Section 6103 of the Internal Revenue Code, which governs the confidentiality of tax returns. Advocacy groups had argued that the statute bars the IRS from sharing information with DHS for deportation purposes and warned that cooperation would “undermine trust” in the tax system.


The appeals court disagreed, concluding that the law contains exceptions that allow disclosures tied to legitimate law enforcement functions. Immigration enforcement, the court indicated, does not exist in a legal vacuum.


The ruling overturns a lower court decision that had blocked the Trump administration from coordinating between the IRS and DHS.


For years, millions of illegal immigrants have filed tax returns using Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers, or ITINs, even though they are not authorized to work in the United States. Critics of the lower court ruling argued it effectively created a safe harbor, allowing individuals in the country illegally to provide personal information to one arm of the federal government while shielding it from another.

Supporters of the Trump administration say the appeals court restored common sense.

Federal agencies, they argue, should not be forced to operate in silos when enforcing the law. If someone is in the country illegally, sharing relevant information between agencies is part of basic governance, not a constitutional crisis.


Immigrant advocacy groups had claimed the policy would discourage tax compliance. But supporters counter that following federal immigration law is not optional, and that the government is under no obligation to insulate illegal status from enforcement simply because someone filed a return.


The Department of Homeland Security has not yet detailed how it will implement the ruling. The IRS has also not publicly outlined specific procedures for information sharing going forward.


The decision marks another courtroom victory for Trump’s broader immigration agenda, which has focused on tightening border security, ramping up interior enforcement and dismantling bureaucratic obstacles that critics say have protected illegal immigrants from accountability.


Legal challenges are likely to continue, and the issue could ultimately reach the Supreme Court. For now, however, the appeals court’s message was clear: federal law does not require the IRS to serve as a firewall against immigration enforcement.

Sen. McConnell Backs Ruling Curbing Trump Emergency Tariffs

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Friday said the Supreme Court's 6-3 decision rejecting President Donald Trump's use of emergency powers to impose broad tariffs underscored Congress's constitutional authority over taxes and trade.

Meanwhile, Trump slammed the ruling and signalled he would pursue other avenues instead.


In a statement released Friday afternoon, McConnell said the court "reaffirmed authority that has rested with Congress for centuries," after the justices concluded that many Trump administration tariffs were unlawfully imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.


The court held that IEEPA does not authorize the president to impose the levies, with Chief Justice John Roberts writing for the court in Learning Resources Inc. v. Trump.

McConnell also argued that "Congress's role in trade policy, as I have warned repeatedly, is not an inconvenience to avoid.


"If the executive would like to enact trade policies that impact American producers and consumers, its path forward is crystal clear: convince their representatives under Article I."

McConnell was among four Republicans who voted for a Senate resolution in October calling for the Trump administration to repeal its tariffs on foreign nations, a measure that passed as consumer and business opposition grew.


The resolution aimed at ending most of Trump's global tariffs passed the Senate 51-47 on Oct. 30, with McConnell joining Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.


Addressing reporters in the White House briefing room on Friday, Trump sharply criticized the conservative members of the Supreme Court who sided with the liberal justices to block his tariff policy, and he signalled that he has little interest in pursuing a legislative solution with Congress.

Trump said he will pursue a temporary 10% global tariff under another law.

Trump supporter interrupts Chris Murphy's speech during State of the Union.

 A protester disrupted Sen. Chris Murphy’s speech during a Tuesday evening event held during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address.

Murphy, who, along with several other members of Connecticut’s Washington delegation, attended the alternative event on the National Mall, was introducing a guest when a heckler interrupted the speech. 


“She came here to the United States to speak truth to power, to explain the trials and tribulations that every immigrant, that every refugee, goes through to get here and to press this country,” Murphy said before the man rushed the stage. 

“Go Trump,” the protester said, wearing a red hat under a green, hooded sweatshirt. 

“Thanks, man. Thanks, buddy,” Murphy replied while security ushered the man away from the stage.


Murphy’s guest was Fereshteh Ganjavi, founder and executive director of nonprofit Elena’s Light, which Murphy’s office described as a Connecticut-based nonprofit dedicated to helping refugee women and children integrate into the United States.

So that's 65 same-day government suicides, and 154 that were done the day after the request was made.

Canada's original assisted suicide and euthanasia law, known as Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), passed in 2016, required a 10-day waiting period between requesting assisted dying and being given the assistance to end one's life.


The Canadian Parliament removed this requirement for individuals whose deaths were 'reasonably foreseeable' in 2021. There are no specific criteria used to discern whether a same-day suicide should be applicable or not.
