TUMBLER RIDGE – The Shooting Victims


Remembering the victims

Hello, I’m Marsha Lederman, writing from Vancouver – a city in mourning, along with the rest of the province and the country.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and the other federal leaders will be in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., today to join the devastated community for a memorial for the victims of this week’s shootings. We now know more about those victims and, brace yourself, it’s shattering. On Thursday afternoon, RCMP released their names as well as some photos – each revelation, every detail, a punch in the gut.


The puffy ski jacket on 12-year-old Abel Mwansa. A smiling 13-year-old Ezekiel Schofield, standing in front of shelves filled with the bric-a-brac of family life – a mug, baskets, a pair of cowboy boots.


Kylie Smith, 12, whose big eyes, layered necklaces and wild hair seemed to match her ambitions: Her dream was to go to art school in the big city of Toronto, a family statement said. Zoey Benoit, another 12-year-old, with her sparkly pink braces and big smile, was described by her family as “so resilient, vibrant, smart, caring and the strongest little girl you could meet.”


Another 12-year-old victim, Ticaria Lampert, was remembered by her mother as a blazing light, an Energizer Bunny, a “Tiki Torch” – one of her nicknames, along with Tiki. “She was born to love and to create peace and harmony,” Sarah Lampert said in a tearful media conference. “She was a Tiki Torch powered by love and happiness; she rarely knew fear. Innocence should have been her name.” Ms. Lampert said her daughter did not have any future plans. “She was content living in the moment. She was in no hurry to grow up. She is forever my baby.”

The 39-year-old educator who was killed at the school has been identified as Shannda Aviugana-Durand.


The half-brother of the shooter was 11-year-old Emmett Jacobs, whose stylish haircut against his boyish face in the photo released by police suggests a child eager to grow into a teenager. The shooter’s mother was identified as 39-year-old Jennifer Jacobs. She was also known as Jennifer Strang.

Even in the face of these horrors, the community, reeling, has responded with warmth to the media descending on the tiny place. “Most people here are super welcoming, even if they don’t want to talk to reporters,” Alanna Smith, one of several Globe and Mail journalists in Tumbler Ridge this week, told me Thursday afternoon. The wind gusts behind her were audible, so strong that even some of the teddy bears placed at the memorial site outside the school were being blown around, she told me. “I feel like people are really coming together.”


Canadian politicians are also coming together, with unity and even interparty warmth, with Carney travelling to Tumbler Ridge along with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP interim leader Don Davies and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May – the latter two of whom represent B.C. ridings – and Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, who in the House of Commons on Wednesday offered condolences uncharacteristically in English (as well as French).


We’re also seeing an unusual display of authentic human emotion from politicians, along with the dropping of partisan rhetoric – whether it was Carney’s teary eyes as he spoke the morning after the shooting, or B.C. Premier David Eby choked up on Wednesday evening after attending a vigil in Tumbler Ridge. “It’s horrifying and inspirational at the same time,” Eby said, making note of those who have helped in the worst circumstances. On Thursday, the B.C. Legislature altered its usual Throne Speech to instead pay tribute to the victims and helpers.


She noted that Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka, when asked how people can help, has repeatedly suggested that they can provide hugs. Even the media can offer hugs, Krakowka had said after Wednesday’s vigil. “You know, hugs help that grieving stage.”


Reporters may forgo physical embraces, but if words can be hugs, Globe and Mail journalists on the ground and across the country are sending theirs as they work to cover this horrible story with respect, compassion and humanity.

TRUMP: 

9th Circuit allows Trump Administration to end Temporary Protected Status for 60,000 Migrants from three countries

The 9th U.S. Court of Appeals handed the Trump administration a major legal victory Monday, striking down a lower court ruling that had blocked plans to revoke deportation protections for citizens of Nicaragua, Nepal, and Honduras. The three-judge panel found the government will likely prevail on the merits — clearing the path to end Temporary Protected Status designations that were never meant to last forever but somehow did.

The decision reverses an August ruling from a California judge who had blocked the administration's plans, citing "sufficient racial animus." The appeals panel dismantled that reasoning in a single, clinical sentence:


"We conclude that the government is likely to succeed on the merits of its appeal either by showing that the district court lacked jurisdiction or by prevailing on plaintiffs' arbitrary-and-capricious APA challenge."

Translation: the lower court either shouldn't have taken the case at all, or got the law wrong when it did.


The "Temporary" Fiction

Temporary Protected Status does exactly what the name says — or at least, it's supposed to. The program grants foreign nationals a reprieve from deportation when conditions in their home countries make return dangerous. War, natural disaster, civil unrest. The keyword is right there in the title.


Yet for tens of thousands of people from Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua, "temporary" stretched into years, then decades. Approximately 50,000 Hondurans, 7,000 Nepalis, and 3,000 Nicaraguans — roughly 60,000 people total — have lived under rolling TPS extensions that transformed emergency relief into something functionally permanent.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem framed the ruling as long overdue, The Hill reported. She called the decision a:


"Win for the rule of law and vindication for the US Constitution."

Noem didn't stop there. She aimed the program's drift from its original purpose:

"Under the previous administration, Temporary Protected Status was abused to allow violent terrorists, criminals, and national security threats into our nation."

She described what TPS had become in practice — a:

"De facto amnesty program."


That phrase lands because the math supports it. When a "temporary" designation persists for a generation, the word has lost all meaning. The program stops being an emergency shelter and starts being a side door around the immigration system that millions of others try to navigate lawfully.


The "Racial Animus" Card

The California judge's original reasoning deserves scrutiny. The court blocked the administration's decision to end TPS by finding "sufficient racial animus" behind the policy — a claim that treats enforcement of immigration law as inherently suspect when it affects non-white populations.


This is a legal strategy the left has refined into muscle memory. Any restriction, any enforcement action, any attempt to apply the plain text of immigration law gets filtered through a racial lens until the policy question disappears entirely. The debate stops being about whether conditions in Honduras have improved enough to end temporary protections. It becomes about whether the people making that determination harbour secret bigotry.


The 9th Circuit — not historically a friendly venue for conservative policy — wasn't buying it. The panel's ruling suggests the lower court either overstepped its jurisdiction or failed to demonstrate that the administration's decision was arbitrary under the Administrative Procedure Act. Neither path vindicates the racial animus theory.


What "Temporary" Actually Means

Noem grounded the decision in the simplest possible terms:

"Given the improved situation in each of these countries, we are wisely concluding what was intended to be a temporary designation."


This is the argument opponents of TPS termination never want to engage with directly. If conditions improve — and at some point over the course of decades, they inevitably do to some degree — then the legal basis for the designation evaporates. Continuing protections after the triggering conditions have subsided isn't compassion. It's policy inertia dressed up as humanitarianism.


The left's position requires you to believe that "temporary" means "until we decide to make it permanent through sheer repetition." That every TPS extension is justified by the same emergency that prompted the original designation, no matter how many years pass. Ending the program is cruel, but the program never ending is just fine.


Sixty thousand people built lives under a designation that told them, from the very first day, that it would end. That's a real human cost, and it's worth acknowledging. But the blame for that cost falls on the administrations that kept extending a fiction rather than creating a real pathway — or an honest timeline for departure. Kicking the can for decades and then calling the person who finally stops kicking a bigot is not governance. It's cowardice on an installment plan.


A Shift in the Legal Landscape

The 9th Circuit siding with the administration on immigration enforcement marks a meaningful moment. This is the court that became synonymous with blocking Trump-era immigration policy during his first term. That a three-judge panel from this circuit found the government likely to prevail — and on merits, not a technicality — signals that the legal ground beneath TPS challenges is shifting.


The ruling doesn't finalize anything. It allows the administration to move forward while litigation continues. But the trajectory is clear. Courts are increasingly unwilling to treat immigration enforcement decisions as presumptively unconstitutional, and the "racial animus" framework that powered so many injunctions is running into its limits.

For 60,000 people, what comes next is uncertain. For the rule of law, Monday brought clarity. Temporary means temporary — and a court finally said so.

Bush-appointed judge blocks Pentagon from stripping Sen. Mark Kelly's military rank over anti-Trump statements

A Bush-appointed federal judge in the District of Columbia halted the Defence Department's effort to strip Senator Mark Kelly of his retired Navy rank and pension on Thursday, issuing a 29-page ruling that blocked the Pentagon's administrative review into the Arizona lawmaker's public statements.

Judge Richard L. Leon didn't just rule against Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth — he lectured him.


This Court has all it needs to conclude that Defendants have trampled on Senator Kelly's First Amendment freedoms and threatened the constitutional liberties of millions of military retirees.


The ruling freezes the Defence Department's investigation into Kelly until the matter is fully adjudicated by the court. Hegseth vowed to appeal immediately. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly told the Daily Mail the administration's view is clear:

This will not be the final say on the matter.


How we got here

The dispute traces back to November, when Kelly, along with five other Democratic lawmakers, published a video encouraging members of the military and intelligence community to refuse "illegal orders" from the White House. Trump responded by accusing Kelly and his fellow Democrats of "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!"


The Pentagon then moved to investigate Kelly — a retired Navy captain and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee — for the content of those statements. Kelly's attorney argued the investigation targeted him "solely for the content and viewpoint of his political speech." Kelly sued Hegseth and the Defence Department.

Meanwhile, a Washington, DC grand jury on Tuesday rejected the Justice Department's bid to indict Kelly and the five other Democratic lawmakers. The criminal path collapsed. Now the administrative path has been blocked too.


The judge's rebuke

Judge Leon — a George W. Bush appointee, not some Obama-era activist — pulled no punches. According to the Daily Mail, his ruling carried the tone of a man who believes the government picked the wrong fight. He rejected the argument that the military should get first crack at the case:


Rather than trying to shrink the First Amendment liberties of retired service members, Secretary Hegseth and his fellow Defendants might reflect and be grateful for the wisdom and expertise that retired service members have brought to public discussions and debate on military matters in our Nation over the past 250 years.

He closed the thought with a flourish:


If so, they will more fully appreciate why the Founding Fathers made free speech the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights!


Leon even quoted Bob Dylan in the ruling — "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows" — before delivering his final line:

To say the least, our retired veterans deserve more respect from their Government, and our Constitution demands they receive it!


Hegseth's response on social media was characteristically blunt:

This will be immediately appealed. Sedition is sedition, 'Captain.'


The conservative dilemma

Here's where this gets uncomfortable — and where honest analysis matters more than tribal loyalty.


Mark Kelly telling troops to refuse "illegal orders" is not some brave act of constitutional stewardship. It's a Democratic senator, fresh off an election loss, trying to seed insubordination within the ranks before the new commander-in-chief even settles in. The video was a political stunt dressed up as principled dissent. Democrats spent four years insisting that questioning military leadership was tantamount to undermining democracy. They discovered the virtues of defiance the moment they lost power.

That hypocrisy is real. It deserves to be called out loudly and often.


But using the machinery of the Defense Department to strip a sitting senator's retired military rank over public statements — statements made in his capacity as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee — is a tool that cuts both ways. Today, it targets Mark Kelly. Tomorrow, it targets the retired general who goes on cable news to criticize a Democratic president's withdrawal from a war zone. The precedent is the problem.

A grand jury already declined to indict. That's a civilian panel of citizens in Washington, DC — not a jurisdiction friendly to conservative causes — saying the criminal case wasn't there. When even that jury won't bite, the evidentiary foundation is thin.


What happens next

The appeal will move forward. Hegseth and the White House have made that clear. The legal question — whether the military retains disciplinary jurisdiction over the speech of retired service members who hold elected office — is genuinely unresolved and may eventually reach higher courts.


But the political question is already answered. This fight elevated Mark Kelly from a one-term senator who lost his relevance to a First Amendment martyr. It handed a Bush-appointed judge the opportunity to write 29 pages about government overreach — pages that read like they were drafted for the front page.


Conservatives should want Democrats held accountable for encouraging insubordination. The question is whether this was the right instrument. A Pentagon administrative review that a federal judge dismantles in a ruling quoting Bob Dylan is not accountability. It's a gift to the other side.


The strongest conservative position on speech has always been the simplest one: more of it, not less. Answer Kelly's bad arguments with better ones. Let voters see Democrats coaching troops to defy their commander-in-chief and draw their own conclusions. That case makes itself — no pension review required.

Left-wing politicians, blue state election administrators, and leftist organizations have launched a blitzkrieg of LAWFARE to destroy our most fundamental election safeguards.

 

This LAWFARE is not a grassroots phenomenon.

Rather, it is a coordinated attack by a network of well-funded nonprofits and political actors with ties to former Democratic administrations.

 

The following are the key people and organizations involved, and their sources of financial support.

 

Democracy Docket / Free Election Fund

 

Founded by Democrat attorney Marc Elias, Democracy Docket regularly litigates to block and dismantle election integrity measures.

 

Elias served as General Counsel for the presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, when he hired Christopher Steele’s firm to produce the now infamous dossier of fabrications regarding Trump and Russia.

 

His groups are sponsored by the Hopewell Fund, a Democrat nonprofit funded by George Soros, Pierre Omidyar, Reid Hoffman, and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss.

 

Since 2020, they have received $13 million in direct grant funding from the Open Society Foundations, and as of October 2025, Elias’s firm was engaged in at least 63 “voting rights” lawsuits.

 

The Campaign Legal Center

 

Founded in 2002, this group has emerged as a central figure in the fight against election integrity.

 

It challenged Louisiana over S.B. 436, which requires proof of citizenship for voters in the state, Congressional redistricting efforts, voter list maintenance, and has sought to restore voting rights for felons and stop voter ID requirements.

 

They have received more than $1 million from the Open Society Foundations, more than $2.5 million from convicted fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried. Other donors include the Sandler Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the Democracy Fund, launched by the Omidyar Network.

 

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

 

The ACLU and its state affiliates have filed more than 100 lawsuits against the Trump administration in 2025.

 

The ACLU’s Recent cases include:

 

- Challenging voter ID requirements in President Trump’s executive order

 

- Asking the courts to compel Mississippi to create additional majority-black Congressional districts

 

- Challenging New Hampshire’s H.B. 1569, which requires residents to provide proof of citizenship to register to vote

 

-Seeking to force Pennsylvania to count mail-in ballots without proper dates.

 

The ACLU and its affiliates are funded by the Open Society Foundations, including a $15 million grant awarded in 2022. Other major donors include the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations, the Carnegie Corporation, and former Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.

 

NAACP Legal Defence Fund

 

The NAACP and its legal defence fund have filed numerous lawsuits challenging election integrity efforts, including redistricting plans in Texas and Missouri, proof-of-citizenship requirements in President Trump’s executive order, and Florida’s S.B. 90, which sought to protect voting by mail from fraud.

 

Jonathan Soros, son of George Soros, serves on the Board of Directors. The organization has received nearly $16 million from the Open Society Foundations since 2019 and at least $2.25 million from the Jennifer and Jonathan

 

Soros Foundation and additional grant funding from the Tides Foundation.

 

Democracy Defenders

Founded in 2024 by longtime Democrat activist and lawyer Norm Eisen, Democracy Defenders and its 501(c)4 affiliate Democracy Defenders Action were created for the explicit purpose of launching legal challenges to election integrity.

 

The organization has already received $5 million from the Open Society Foundations.

 

In June 2025, it joined a lawsuit seeking to preserve birthright citizenship. It has also sued to compel Pennsylvania to accept mail-in ballots containing errors, including those lacking a signature.

 

Williams J. Brennan Center for Justice

 

This group operates from New York University’s School of Law. It has sued to prevent multiple states from cleaning voter rolls, opposed ID requirements for voting by mail, and worked to restore voting rights to convicted felons.

 

The Brennan Center has received grant funding from Soros’ Foundation to Promote Open Society, more than $1 million from a subsidiary of the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Ford Foundation, and $155,000 from the Tides Foundation.

 

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW)

CREW is a left-wing advocacy organization that routinely engages in lawfare to block virtually every aspect of President Trump’s agenda, including efforts to expand mail-in voting (including the acceptance of ballots received after election day).

 

CREW has received significant funding from the Open Society Foundations, Democracy Alliance (a consortium of billionaire progressive donors including George Soros and Tom Steyer), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

 

My friend, this is what Judicial Watch is up against every day.

 

A coordinated, billionaire-backed network using lawfare to overwhelm states, manipulate courts, and dismantle the safeguards that protect American elections.

FBI’S BOMBSHELL FULTON COUNTY AFFIDAVIT

Now we know more about that FBI raid of a Fulton County election office, which included the seizure of roughly 700 boxes of ballots.According to a bombshell affidavit unsealed in federal court, the FBI has “substantiated” irregularities in how votes were counted in Fulton County in the 2020 election.The affidavit includes allegations of impropriety from a dozen witnesses.“Some of those allegations have been disproven, while some of those allegations have been substantiated, including through admissions by Fulton County,” the document states.The FBI is thus investigating whether “any of the improprieties were intentional acts that violated federal criminal laws.” 


BONDI DECLARES: WEAPONIZATION IS OVER

Attorney General Pam Bondi told Congress on Wednesday that “weaponization has ended” within the DOJ.But she also declared, “No one is above the law.”The context suggests that accountability is still coming for government officials who weaponized the government against Republicans, including John Brennan, whom Bondi declined to confirm or deny is under DOJ investigation. 


WHAT DID ILHAN OMAR JUST SAY?

Rep. Ilhan Omar ignited new controversy after communicating what some people took as a threat against President Trump.After Trump called Omar a “fake congresswoman,” Omar wrote on X, “The leader of the Pedophile Protection Party is trying to deflect attention from his name being all over the Epstein files. At least in Somalia, they execute pedophiles, not elect them.”Trump, of course, is not implicated in the Epstein Files — quite the opposite, in fact. But did Omar really suggest that Trump should be executed?The Republican Party sure thinks so, responding to Omar’s comments by writing on X, “Ilhan Omar casually calls for President Trump to be executed.”


‘SEDITIOUS SIX’ DEMS DODGE CHARGES

 

A grand jury in Washington, D.C., declined to indict the “Seditious Six” Democrats, who released a video urging the military to defy President Trump’s “illegal” orders.CBS News reported that prosecutors sought to charge the Democrats under 18 U.S.C. § 2387, which outlaws anyone from attempting “to cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, or refusal of duty by any member of the military.”The Democrats remained defiant after hearing the news about the grand jury’s decision, but so did Speaker Mike Johnson.“Yeah, they probably should be indicted,” he said.

U.S. military forces boarded the oil tanker Aquila II overnight on February 9 after tracking the vessel from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean — a pursuit spanning thousands of miles that ended without incident in the Indo-Pacific Command's area of responsibility.


The operation, described by the Pentagon as a "right-of-visit, maritime interdiction and boarding," enforced President Donald Trump's quarantine of sanctioned vessels originating in the Caribbean. Full operational details remain classified.

The Department of War didn't mince words. In a post on X, the Pentagon laid it out plainly:


"When the Department of War says quarantine, we mean it."

"Nothing will stop DoW from defending our Homeland — even in oceans halfway around the world."

That's not bluster. That's a tanker boarded on the far side of the planet to prove the point.


The Chase

The Aquila II attempted to flee from the Caribbean, through the Atlantic, and into the Indian Ocean. Thousands of miles of open water, and it still wasn't enough distance.

Newsmax national security correspondent Carla Babb reported that U.S. special operations forces launched the operation from a destroyer in the region. The USS Pinckney and USS John Finn are both currently operating in the area, according to officials.


The Pentagon's message to anyone considering a similar run was direct:

"You will run out of fuel long before you will outrun us."

There's a certain clarity in that. No diplomatic hedging, no interagency review process, no carefully workshopped talking point. Just a plain statement of capability backed by action.


Capability as Doctrine

The Pentagon's full statement read less like a press release and more like a warning posted at the edge of every ocean:

"No other nation on planet Earth has the capability to enforce its will through any domain."


"By land, air, or sea, our Armed Forces will find you and deliver justice."

A former defence official — unnamed, but clearly someone who understood what they were watching — framed it in terms the foreign policy establishment has spent decades forgetting:


"This is what peace through strength looks like."

"When America draws a line, it has to be enforced, or it means nothing."

That second line is the one worth sitting with. For years, under previous administrations, sanctions existed on paper while sanctioned vessels moved freely across the globe. Senior officials in the current administration have warned that lax enforcement under prior presidents emboldened bad actors. The Aquila II's attempted escape route — spanning two oceans — suggests they weren't wrong.


Lines That Mean Something

The quarantine President Trump established for sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean represented a shift in posture — from passive designation to active enforcement. Sanctioning a vessel and then watching it sail wherever it pleases is not a policy. It's a suggestion. The boarding of the Aquila II converts the suggestion into a fact.

There are notable gaps worth acknowledging. The Pentagon did not specify what cargo, if any, the Aquila II was carrying at the time of boarding. The legal status of the vessel post-boarding — whether it has been formally seized or simply boarded and inspected — was not clarified. The specific executive order or legal authority underpinning the quarantine was not cited in the Pentagon's statement.


These details will matter eventually. For now, the signal is the story. The United States tracked a sanctioned tanker across two oceans and put boots on its deck. Whatever the paperwork says, the message is not ambiguous.


The Enforcement Gap Closes

For conservatives, this operation illustrates something that shouldn't be controversial but somehow always is: rules without enforcement aren't rules. They're theater. The previous consensus — sanction broadly, enforce selectively, hope for compliance — produced exactly the result you'd expect. From Toronto to Ottawa and echoed by voices inside Iran, Iranians want the Islamic Republic gone and a democratic transition led by Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, with the final decision left to the people.



This isn't about replacing one dictatorship with another. It's about a free referendum that allows Iranians to choose their own future without fear or coercion.

They aren't asking Canadians to speak for them. They're asking to be heard.

Many also voiced frustration with Canada's inaction. Despite the IRGC being designated a terrorist organization last year, the Iranian community says enforcement has been weak, and their concerns have been ignored.

And still, week after week, these rallies remain peaceful, hopeful, and unshaken.
