Update (Day 873) Swords of Iron - “Friends in Tough Times”
2,500 years ago, a man in the Persian Empire conspired to destroy, kill, and annihilate every Jew in the empire. He was, in essence, planning a genocide.
He deceived the king into signing a decree to carry out this evil plan, portraying the Jewish people as enemies of the empire. Sound familiar?
Haman’s plot, however, was overturned in the most unexpected way. A young Jewish woman named Esther, who had become queen, became his undoing.
Invited to a banquet with the king and queen, Haman’s true intentions were exposed, and he was immediately put to death.
Afterward, Esther approached King Ahasuerus once again, this time falling at his feet, weeping, and pleading for her people. The decree Haman had issued could not be revoked. However, a new decree was written, one that empowered the Jewish people throughout the empire to defend themselves.
In these letters the king authorized: “the Jews in each and every city to gather and defend their lives, to destroy, kill, and annihilate every armed group of any nation or province that might attack them.”Esther 8:11
The evil scheme Haman had devised was reversed. Instead of genocide, the Jewish people were given the right to stand and defend themselves against those who sought their destruction.
Mordechai then instructed the Jewish people to remember and celebrate Purim: “…as the days on which the Jews had rest from their enemies, as the month which was turned for them from sorrow to joy and from mourning to celebration…” Esther 9:22
The same God who delivered His people 2,500 years ago has not changed.
Today, Israel once again faces threats from Persia (Iran). Iran and its regional proxies openly call for our destruction.
Just as Esther stood as an intercessor for her people, we too are called to stand in prayer.
As we approach Purim, beginning March 2nd at sundown, join us in prayer, intercession, and fasting for Israel. We are also praying for the people of Iran, many of whom are suffering greatly under their current regime.
May sorrow once again be turned into joy.
May God help deliver Israel once again from her enemies

CBS anchor calls Trump's State of the Union 'extraordinary' as Maddow dismisses it as 'violence porn'

CBS Evening News host Tony Dokoupil praised President Trump's record-breaking State of the Union address as "extraordinary" and "historic" Tuesday night, while over on MSNBC, Rachel Maddow offered a starkly different verdict: the speech was "wound-up and weird" and amounted to "violence porn."
The split-screen reactions, delivered within minutes of Trump concluding the longest State of the Union in American history, offered a near-perfect snapshot of where the media stands heading into the midterms. One network's anchor engaged with the substance. The other couldn't get past her own revulsion long enough to try.
Dokoupil Engages with the Speech on Its Terms
Trump spoke for a record-breaking 1 hour and 47 minutes, covering the economy, immigration, gender ideology, and voter identification. Dokoupil, 45, who was elevated to the CBS Evening News anchor desk in January 2026, described what he watched this way:
"It was an extraordinary speech - the longest to a joint session in history, the longest State of the Union in history... The first part of the speech, all about the economy, an issue we know a lot of Americans want to hear about."
As reported by the Daily Mail, he characterized the performance as "vintage Trump: combative, populist. Historic for other reasons, as well." Dokoupil also identified what he called "the heart of the speech," pointing to the president's remarks on immigration, gender, and voter identification as the substance that mattered most.
Dokoupil noted that Trump ad-libbed one of the night's sharpest lines, one that wasn't in the prepared script: "The first duty of elected officials is to protect Americans, not illegal aliens." He also observed that Trump "seemed at times to be goading Democrats into reacting, and at times they took that bait."
That's a straightforward observation. It's also the kind of analysis that would have been unremarkable at CBS five years ago. Today it qualifies as countercultural.
Maddow Sees Blood, Misses the Point
Rachel Maddow, 52, took a different approach. She skipped past the economic portion of the address almost entirely, dismissing it in a single breath:
"The president didn't seem very invested in the lies that he was telling about the economy, but he did list a whole bunch of them right off the bat."
No rebuttal. No specifics. Just "lies" as a category and a wave of the hand. The real offense, in Maddow's telling, was that Trump devoted large portions of the speech to anecdotes about Americans killed by illegal immigrants. She described it as gratuitous:
"He talked about people being covered in blood, gushing blood, blood pouring out of things… people being on the edge of death."
She went further, accusing Trump of going into "graphic detail on several different people's injuries" and offering "as much sort of gory detail as he could, talking about very bloody scenes." Her final characterization: the president engaged in "sort of violently pornographic riffing."
Think about what that framing actually does. A president stands before Congress and tells the stories of Americans whose lives were destroyed by people who should never have been in the country. He names the cost of policy failure in human terms. And the progressive response is to complain that it was too vivid.
The families of those victims might use a different word than "pornographic." They might call it recognition.
The Real Split Isn't About Style
Maddow predicted the main takeaway from the speech would be "his pace and his freneticism." That tells you everything about how she processed the evening. Not the policy. Not the arguments. The tempo.
CBS Chief Washington Analyst Robert Costa offered a more grounded assessment, calling the speech "entirely who President Trump is":
"Totally defiant, blunt force politically on all of these issues, not so much making a speech but a presentation, and a recharacterization of the political reality. Trying to put it in his fingerprints ahead of the midterms."
Costa may not have been cheerleading, but he was doing his job: explaining what the speech accomplished politically. That's a low bar, and yet it towers above dismissing the whole thing as a blood-soaked fever dream.
The divide here isn't really between CBS and MSNBC. It's between a media willing to grapple with what a president actually said and a media that pre-decided its reaction before Trump reached the podium. Maddow didn't engage with the immigration argument. She didn't contest the specific cases Trump raised. She objected to the fact that he raised them at all.
The Bari Weiss Factor
Dokoupil's willingness to call the speech "extraordinary" without immediately qualifying it into meaninglessness is worth noting in context. He was promoted from CBS Mornings earlier this year by new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, 41, the founder of the right-leaning Free Press, who was appointed by Paramount CEO David Ellison under the pretense of being a disruptor after the company's merger with Skydance.
Weiss has had a turbulent tenure since taking over in October. She held a highly publicized town hall with Erika Kirk in December. She hired Matt Gutman, a longtime former ABC journalist who previously worked at the Jerusalem Post, as the network's chief reporter. She also pulled a 60 Minutes segment that was set to examine conditions at CECOT, the Terrorism Confinement Center in El Salvador, where the Trump administration has been sending illegal immigrants.
The CECOT decision drew predictable outrage from the usual corners, but it signaled something important: editorial choices at CBS are no longer running on autopilot. Whether Weiss can sustain that shift through a full midterm cycle is an open question, but Dokoupil's Tuesday night performance suggests she's at least putting anchors in front of the camera who are willing to describe reality without flinching.
What 'Violence Porn' Really Means
There's a pattern worth naming. Every time a conservative leader forces the public to confront the human consequences of illegal immigration, the progressive media apparatus reaches for the same move: don't argue the facts, argue the tone. Call it fearmongering. Call it exploitation. Call it pornographic. Anything to avoid the underlying question: were these people killed, and could their deaths have been prevented by enforcing the law?
Maddow never answered that. She never had to, because her audience doesn't require it. They tuned in to be told the speech was bad, and she delivered.
Dokoupil's audience got something different. They got an anchor who acknowledged the speech was long, noted its political strategy, identified its emotional core, and let viewers decide for themselves. That used to be called journalism.
The longest State of the Union in history, and the most revealing reaction wasn't anything Trump said. It was what his critics refused to hear.

Doorbell camera may have captured masked suspect before Nancy Guthrie's abduction, raising questions about surveillance and investigation

A masked figure appeared at Nancy Guthrie's front door before the night she vanished, according to newly surfaced doorbell camera footage that suggests her abduction was no crime of opportunity. It was planned.
Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen on January 31 after being dropped off by a family member at her home in the upscale Catalina Foothills neighborhood of Tucson, Arizona. Police believe she was taken against her will during the early morning hours of February 1. She failed to show up at a friend's home, and her family reported her missing.
Federal investigators released footage showing an unidentified suspect at Guthrie's front door, apparently attempting to obscure or tamper with her Nest doorbell camera. Authorities have described the suspect as between 5'9" and 5'10". It is now believed the suspect may have approached the door on a prior occasion, meaning the figure was potentially surveilling the residence before the abduction itself.
Authorities have pushed back on speculation about the timeline, stating that "any suggestion that the photographs were taken on different days is purely speculative." But the implication of pre-surveillance has not been ruled out.
A Former FBI Agent Sees Planning, Not Impulse
Jason Peck, a former FBI agent, offered a blunt assessment of what the footage could mean:
It could indicate that the person was there surveilling the place before the abduction happened.
Peck went further, drawing a distinction between a random crime and something far more deliberate:
The fact that there was preparation and planning, which makes it more of a sophisticated type of criminal activity than someone just showing up.
According to the Daily Mail, that distinction matters. If Peck's read is correct, this wasn't a burglar who stumbled onto an occupied home. Someone studied Nancy Guthrie's routine, her home, her security system. Her pacemaker was disconnected from an app on her phone at 2:28 a.m., a detail that deepens the sense of a carefully executed operation.
Bloody Gloves, a Long Hold, and a Late-Night Interrogation
On February 11, a couple walking near North Campbell Avenue discovered a bloody black latex glove. A second glove was found less than 10 feet away. The location was less than a mile from Guthrie's home, though authorities later collected the gloves from a site referenced as two miles away.
The couple called the FBI hotline. They waited 45 minutes on hold. When they reached the Pima County Sheriff's Department, they were told to leave the gloves in place and that someone would respond to the scene. Multiple detectives eventually arrived and questioned the couple until 2 a.m.
The DNA recovered from the gloves did not match anyone in the FBI's Combined DNA Index System, known as CODIS. Authorities said they will continue DNA testing on the gloves over the next few weeks. Whether those gloves are connected to the case remains an open question, but the response they triggered, hours of interrogation for a couple who tried to help, says something about how this investigation is being run.
Three Men and a Locked Door
That brings us to the most troubling thread in this story: who is actually driving the investigation, and who is being frozen out.
According to law enforcement sources, the case has been effectively locked down by three people: Sheriff Chris Nanos, Chief Jesus Lopez, and Captain Juan Carlos Navarro. A sergeant named David Stivers is officially in charge of the case, but sources say any information given to him is passed straight up the chain to those three.
One law enforcement source described the arrangement in stark terms:
He will only let himself or two of his handpicked staffers make decisions on the case.
The source continued, saying that everyone else is being told what to do and that no one else has a say or an opinion. Just three men making the decisions.
Another source laid bare the concern about federal cooperation:
It's limited to the thought processes of three men. They're keeping everything from the FBI – they just aren't sharing.
An 84-year-old woman is missing. The FBI is involved. And according to multiple sources inside law enforcement, the sheriff's department is walling off the very agency with the deepest resources to help. One source did not mince words, saying Nanos "is pompous and wants the spotlight, rather than focusing on Nancy and letting the FBI do their job."
Another source offered an important nuance, noting it is typical to keep key details under tight wraps, as seen in the Idaho case. But what is unusual, the source said, is that the command staff is driving the investigation rather than experienced detectives. The characterization was pointed:
So no actual detectives are steering this, just command staff. This is highly unusual.
The source called it "the tail wagging the dog."
Volunteers Need Not Apply
Meanwhile, community members eager to help search for Guthrie have been met with a closed door of their own. Investigators asked neighbors to check their security systems for suspicious people or vehicles going back to January 1, a reasonable request. But when it comes to physical searches, Sheriff Nanos posted on social media:
We appreciate their concern, and we all want to find Nancy, but this work is best left to professionals.
He added that the department has volunteer opportunities if people wish to get involved. He also urged residents to keep "private property laws in mind" and to ask permission before searching.
There's a version of this that makes sense. Contaminated scenes, trampled evidence, liability. Law enforcement has legitimate reasons to manage a search. But telling a frightened community to essentially stand down while simultaneously restricting the FBI's role in the investigation is a combination that inspires very little confidence.
What We Know and What We Don't
Here is what the facts establish so far:
Nancy Guthrie was likely taken from her home in the early hours of February 1.
A masked suspect was captured on her doorbell camera, possibly on more than one occasion.
Her pacemaker, which Sheriff Nanos previously said had six or seven years of battery life, disconnected from its app at 2:28 a.m.
Bloody gloves were found near her home but have not been linked to any known individual through CODIS.
The sheriff's department said on Friday that it is "not ruling out the possibility that more than one person may be involved."
The investigation is being controlled by three members of command staff, not the detectives working the case.
Every day that passes makes a missing persons case harder. Every jurisdictional turf war makes it worse. Nancy Guthrie's family does not need a sheriff who wants the spotlight. They need one who wants their mother found.

It has some nuggets, but it's all presented from a human point of view, not Christian. I send it to you so you can see how Ted Kunz, founder of Freedom Rising, is perceiving the options to move forward. This will influence the conversation tomorrow at noon. Ted writes;
I reached the conclusion that the Canada we thought we had doesn’t exist. The system isn’t broken. It was designed this way – a top down system of control under the illusion of a democracy. I then began to list the possible options available to us:
1. Work within in the current justice and political system to create reform
2. Stand back and allow the system to collapse
3. Mass non-compliance
4. Liberation from Canada and the creation of a new governance --structure that serves “the people”
5. Pray
Thankfully Ted includes prayer, but he does not include the option of building a parallel society within our existing society. I quote James Corbett who produces the Corbett Report. In the last five minutes of his report on 5th Generation Warfare he says;
My regular viewers will understand what I am proposing here: the creation of a parallel society. We will not achieve this by asking for more scraps from the master’s table, or by gently complying as we are herded into ever more constrictive technological pens, or by thinking that we can win this war by engaging the enemy in their controlled domain. We can only achieve this by creating our own table, our own economy and our own communities of interest. This will require the long and difficult task of increasing our independence from the authoritarian systems in every domain: the information domain, the food domain, the health domain, the monetary domain, the mental domain and every other contested battlespace in this all-out, fifth-generation war.
Easier said than done, of course. But there is no alternative.
Some will say “But won’t they come after that parallel society?” as if that is a rebuttal to what I have laid out here. The point is that you are already the target of the enemy in a war that most people but dimly understand is happening. Yes, the enemy will come after you. But they are already dominating you in more ways than any one person can fully understand. That does not stop just because you comply with their demands or take part in their system.
We must stop playing their game. We must stop fighting their war. We must stop ceding our power, our authority, our time, our attention, our energy and our resources to engaging the enemy in their terms in their battlefield.
We must create our own parallel society on our own terms.
And so we rediscover an old piece of wisdom. To paraphrase: “Fifth-generation warfare is a strange game. The only winning move is not to play.”

The problem with his analogy of the Book of Esther is that he links Iran to Russia simply because Iran is linked to Russia in the Book of Ezekiel chpt 38. I think that link won't be forged until after Russia, the most Christian nation in the world right now, is hi-jacked by the Anti-Christ. Putin has not offered any military help to the Ayatolla. Putin only offered him a place of refuge, to encourage him to abandon Iran. Russia is not intervening.

I love reruns, but these days I’m wondering if we’re about to have a front row seat to an astounding rerun of the story told in the Book of Esther. With the Feast of Purim upon us, Prime Minister Netanyahu has referenced the ancient victory of the Jews over Persia while warning Iran that any attack would be the most serious mistake in their history.
