EVS are first test for Canada’s ‘partnership’ with China
Kovrig Warns Canada Risks ‘Deep Entanglement’ With Beijing by Opening Its Market to Chinese EVs
Michael Kovrig, a geopolitical advisor and former diplomat, warns that Canada's new partnership with China risks deeper economic entanglement with an increasingly totalitarian state, which he views as a "dead end." He highlights concerns about harmful environmental practices and human rights abuses in Chinese EV supply chains, as well as potential risks to Canada's data privacy.
OTTAWA • Criticism over the government’s decision to allow Chinese electric vehicles access to Canada’s market is mounting, with industry and geopolitical analysts warning against increased engagement with China.
“It’s a massive risk,” said Brian Kingston, president and CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association.
“Canada’s auto industry depends on our integration with North America and the U.S. specifically, that’s been the foundation of the sector, going all the way back to the auto pact.”
In January, while visiting Beijing, Prime Minister Mark Carney signed a strategic partnership with China, which included allowing 49,000 Chinese EVS access to the Canadian market, in exchange for the lowering of Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola and seafood exports.
While this was welcome news for the Canadian agrifood industry, it was less welcomed by the Canadian auto manufacturers, who argue it will undercut Canadian industry and workers.
“An estimated hourly wage at a Chinese (plant) is between US$2 and $4 an hour,” said Kingston. “Compare that to a unionized vehicle production plant in Canada, where your average wage is about $45 an hour, and that also includes pensions and benefits and a whole range of other advantages.”
Carney’s government said it was an opportunity to give Canadians a cheaper option in a market that has struggled to provide vehicles at a reasonable price. The government also said in five years, more than 50 per cent of the vehicles will have an import price of less than $35,000.
But even Joanna Kyriazis, director of policy and strategy at Clean Energy Canada, whose organization would like to see Canadian consumers access more affordable EVS, acknowledged the risk associated with increased trade with Chinese companies.
“It’s clear that this will be a delicate and sometimes difficult relationship to manage, with risks and opportunities that must be carefully weighed, as we heard from the earlier witnesses today,” she said, during testimony in front of the House of Commons committee on science and research on Thursday.
Michael Kovrig, a geopolitical adviser and former diplomat who was detained by the Chinese government for 1,000 days, said he views Canada’s new partnership with “deep concern.”
Kovrig said while he can appreciate the necessity to accelerate the green transition, provide cheaper options to consumers and hedge against an unreliable U.S. administration, he argued China is not the answer.
“Deeper economic entanglement with China is not a long-term route to achieving any of those goals,” he told the committee. “It’s a dead end.”
Kovrig took note of harmful environmental practices and human rights abuses that exist in the supply chains of Chinese EV companies.
Chinese EV company BYD has faced allegations of using forced labour in the construction of its factories in both Brazil and Hungary.
A recent report by U.s.based non-profit China Labor Watch showed evidence of brutal labour conditions for Chinese migrant workers at its Szeged facility in Hungary.
Recently, Brazil also listed BYD on its registry of employers found to have subjected workers to slave labour conditions. The head of its labour inspection authority was then fired over the move. BYD has a new electric vehicle factory at the Industrial Complex in Camacari, Brazil.
Last month during testimony before a House of Commons committee, former senior bureaucrat Margaret Mccuaig-johnston cited a Human Rights Watch report that said aluminum used in dozens of parts in Chinese EVS is most likely the product of Uyghur forced labour.
BYD is looking at opening dealerships in the Greater Toronto Area.
In early April, Chinabased Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology Co. was in discussions with Stellantis over potentially building Chinese EVS at its idled plant in Brampton, Ont. The plan involved assembling “knock down” kits, where Chinese parts are shipped to Canada for final assembly by Canadian workers.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford called the plan “unacceptable,” and Industry Minister Mélanie Joly outright rejected the plan, noting that any plant production must support the local supply chain.
There has also been concerns raised about the software on the Chinese EVS, which could pose risks to Canada’s data privacy. Joly has said any Chinese EVS sold in Canada will need to have Canadian tech.
When asked if the Chinese state would be able to access Canadian data through Chinese EV software, Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne said it’s a “possibility,” as was the case when he investigated Tiktok, which is owned by China-based Bytedance.
Increased trade with Chinese companies will pose challenges to Canada’s new diplomatic relationship with China, said Vina Nadjibulla, vice president of research and strategy at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.
“I think there are a number of concerns when it comes to this expansion of Chinese companies and their presence in the Canadian market,” she said. “And human rights is one element of it, but economic security and national security concerns must also be considered.”
Former ambassador to China Guy Saint-jacques said Canada’s policy on Chinese EVS should not have been so closely aligned to that of the United States. In 2024, then finance minister Chrystia Freeland announced a 100 per cent tariff on Chinese EVS in line with the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden.
Saint-jacques said Canada should set its own rules with Chinese EV makers.

“We should welcome Chinese car manufacturers but set the rules similarly to what GM Canada had to do when it went to Shanghai in 2009,” he told the committee. “We should say, you are welcome to come to Canada, but you will have, after three years, to have about 30 per cent of Canadian content, and after 10 years, it has to be 100 per cent content.”
During Thursday’s committee, Liberal MP Taleeb Noormohamed asked Kovrig whether Europe has struck “the right balance” as BYD electric vehicles have become an important part of the European car market while also maintaining their own domestic car manufacturing.
“There is no balance,” said Kovrig. “I think they are in a long-term structural industrial decline.”
Carney said legislation in Canada is designed to force companies to report on their supply chains and combat forced labour elements in the Canadian supply chain.
But critics have questioned the quality of enforcement. Since 2021, it has been reported that the Canada Border Services Agency has stopped just two shipments that contained forced labour, both originating from China.
“The legislation is world class; the enforcement of the legislation is possibly less than world class,” said former Liberal MP John Mckay, during a press conference on Parliament Hill alongside academics on Tuesday.

Tulsi Gabbard Refers Trump Impeachment Figures to DOJ
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard reportedly has asked the Justice Department to investigate two former government officials who played key roles in the 2019 impeachment of President Donald Trump.
According to multiple reports, Gabbard sent criminal referrals targeting the original impeachment whistleblower and former Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson, following the declassification of documents she says raise serious concerns about how the case against Trump was handled.
An Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) spokesperson confirmed that a referral was made "related to one or more former employees of the Intelligence Community and their role in the 2019 impeachment of President Trump," though specific charges were not outlined.
The move comes after newly released materials suggested the whistleblower may have misled investigators and harbored potential bias, while Atkinson allegedly withheld key information from Congress during the impeachment proceedings, according to Just the News on Wednesday.
Gabbard has criticized the handling of the complaint, arguing that the whistleblower process was "weaponized" and contributed to what she and other Trump allies describe as a politically driven effort to undermine a duly elected president.
CBS News reported that while Gabbard has formally requested investigations, the DOJ will ultimately determine whether to pursue any charges.
The network noted that the original whistleblower complaint centered on Trump's 2019 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. That led to the House impeaching Trump before he was later acquitted in the Senate.
CNN similarly confirmed the referrals, reporting that Gabbard released additional documents this week that she said point to irregularities in how the whistleblower complaint was handled.
Those materials include testimony and internal notes that allegedly show deviations from standard procedures by the intelligence community watchdog.
Critics, including top Democrats, have pushed back strongly.
Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., argued the referral is politically motivated and warned it could discourage future whistleblowers.
However, supporters of the move say accountability is long overdue, particularly if evidence was withheld during a historic impeachment process.
Legal experts note that criminal referrals do not guarantee prosecution, but they can trigger formal reviews by federal investigators.
For Trump supporters, the development represents a potential turning point in revisiting one of the most contentious political battles of his first term.
If pursued, the investigation could have far-reaching implications — not only for those involved in the impeachment process, but also for broader questions about transparency, accountability, and the role of intelligence agencies in domestic politics.

FBI now holds DNA from hair sample recovered at Nancy Guthrie's Tucson home

More than eleven weeks after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was kidnapped from her Tucson, Arizona, home, the FBI has received DNA evidence collected from the residence, including test results from a hair sample, as investigators press to identify whoever took the mother of "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie on the morning of February 1, 2026.
Sources familiar with the investigation told Fox News Digital that the bureau now possesses the hair-sample data alongside other DNA material gathered from Guthrie's property. The Pima County Sheriff's Department confirmed the cooperation in a post on X, though it pushed back on the suggestion that the FBI's involvement was new.
The development matters because, despite weeks of forensic work, no suspect has been publicly identified. DNA recovered from the scene, including a complex mixture that experts believe contains genetic material from three or more people, has so far failed to produce a match in the FBI's national CODIS database. The question hanging over the case is whether advanced testing and fresh samples can break through where earlier efforts stalled.
A trail of DNA, and dead ends
The forensic picture in the Guthrie case has been tangled from the start. Blood found on the front porch of Guthrie's home traced back to her. An FBI-released image showed an armed individual who appeared to have tampered with the front-door camera on the morning she vanished. Investigators recovered a suspicious glove about two miles from her home that appeared similar to gloves worn by a masked suspect captured on Guthrie's Nest doorbell camera.
That glove initially looked like a promising lead. Breitbart reported that the FBI said the glove contained DNA and appeared to match those worn by the masked person outside Guthrie's front door the night she vanished, with preliminary test results received on a Saturday pending official confirmation.
But the glove lead went cold. The Pima County Sheriff's Department later disclosed that the DNA from the glove produced no CODIS matches. The Washington Times reported the department's blunt assessment: "There were no DNA hits in CODIS." The department added: "At this point, there have been no confirmed CODIS matches in this investigation."
That meant the gloves, despite their visual resemblance to the suspect's gear, did not point investigators toward anyone already in the national criminal database. It was a setback, but not necessarily the end of the road for that evidence.
The Washington Examiner confirmed the CODIS dead end and noted that the FBI had described the recovered gloves as distinct from other gloves found near the scene. Authorities stressed that additional DNA evidence found at the residence was still being analyzed and that further testing was needed.
Earlier in the investigation, the sheriff's department bypassed FBI labs in favor of a private Florida facility for DNA analysis, a decision that drew scrutiny over timelines and coordination.
The mixed sample problem
One of the central forensic challenges has been a mixed DNA sample recovered from the home. Authorities said the mixture was not strong enough to develop a profile suitable for CODIS. Experts believe it contains genetic material from at least three individuals, with at least one contribution coming from a male.
CeCe Moore, a leading investigative genetic genealogist at Parabon Nanolabs, told Fox News Digital she would expect the mixture to include Nancy Guthrie's own DNA along with that of two or more unknown individuals.
"I would assume it would be Nancy plus two or more unknowns."
Moore also addressed whether the hair sample might be entangled in the same mixed-sample complications. She indicated it would not, saying the hair evidence would be handled separately once cleaned for contamination.
"Not after it is cleaned for contamination. They have that process in good shape, but it can take some time."
That distinction is significant. If the hair sample yields a clean, single-source DNA profile, or even a cleaner partial profile, it could give investigators something the mixed sample has not: a usable genetic fingerprint to run against databases or to feed into genetic genealogy techniques that have solved other cold cases in recent years.
As the FBI worked to gather evidence from the home, investigators also obtained the final surveillance footage of Guthrie from hours before she vanished, adding another layer to the timeline they were building.
The sheriff's department responds
The Pima County Sheriff's Department moved quickly to frame the FBI's receipt of DNA data as routine rather than a new development. In a post on X, the department stated:
"PCSD has worked with the FBI since the beginning of the Guthrie investigation. This is not new information."
A second post elaborated on the lab arrangement:
"The private lab we utilize in Florida continues to share information with the FBI lab & other partner labs across the country. DNA analysis remains ongoing."
The department's tone suggested an effort to manage expectations and push back against any implication that the FBI had only recently become involved in the forensic side of the case. Whether that framing holds up depends on what the FBI does next with the evidence it now possesses, and how quickly results come.
The New York Post reported that the FBI is using newer, advanced DNA analysis technology on the existing sample, and that about two dozen investigators remain engaged in the search for a breakthrough. Multiple additional labs are also involved.
Meanwhile, the FBI continued pulling new surveillance images from Guthrie's property well into the second month of the investigation, yet no suspect was named.
Advanced testing and the CODIS question
Just The News reported that the FBI was still awaiting quality control and official confirmation before entering an unknown male DNA profile into CODIS. That step, uploading a clean profile to the national database, is where a match could surface if the suspect has any prior criminal record or if a relative's DNA is already in a genealogy-linked database.
The fact that investigators have identified at least one male contributor in the DNA mixture, combined with the doorbell camera footage of an armed, masked individual at Guthrie's front door, gives the case a clear suspect profile even without a name. The gap between that profile and an arrest is what advanced DNA testing is supposed to close.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos had previously acknowledged that DNA recovered from the scene had not yet led police to a suspect in the February 1 kidnapping. Eleven weeks later, that remains the case.
A combined reward of more than $1.2 million has been offered in connection with Guthrie's disappearance. A million of that comes from the Guthrie family for their mother's recovery. The family has asked anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
A retired FBI agent warned weeks ago that a kidnapper, and likely a killer, was walking free as the search dragged on. That warning has only grown more urgent with time.
What the evidence still cannot tell us
For all the forensic activity, major questions remain unanswered. No one has been arrested. No suspect has been publicly named. The mixed DNA sample from the home has not produced a usable CODIS profile. The glove DNA came back empty. And while the hair sample now sits with the FBI, it is unclear how long advanced testing will take or whether it will yield a clean enough result to move the case forward.
The investigation has involved road closures, forensic searches, the towing of a vehicle, and the work of multiple labs across the country. Yet the 84-year-old woman at the center of it all has not been found.
Eleven weeks is a long time for a family to wait. It is an even longer time for a suspect to remain free. The DNA may eventually speak, but so far, the silence from the evidence has been as loud as anything in this case.

EST.”
Trump’s announcement raises significant unanswered questions over the details of the agreement. Israel’s bombing campaign — which has rocked Beirut and other Lebanese cities — is part of its long-running conflict with the Hezbollah militant group and not the country’s military forces. The Lebanese government has little control over the group, so a ceasefire with the country’s official representation does not necessarily mean an end to the war.
Trump added that he is dispatching Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Dan Caine to work with the two countries on continued negotiations.
The president said in a subsequent post that he was inviting Netanyahu and Aoun to the White House for a summit. The embassies of Israel and Lebanon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In Wednesday's Free Press there were two articles which make the point. In the Comment section, columnist Jay Goldberg wrote "Ford's regional [government] redo threatens local democracy". On the front page I read "Facing powers cut, trustees split on seeking re-election". And I hope everyone knows how the Strong Mayors Act usurps the power of elected municipal representatives.
At the federal level, Cagey Carney adopts international agreements and justifies the implementation of these controls in the name of health measures or climate change. We're expected to "follow the science". I say we should "follow the money".
