TOKYO — Mark Carney says he wants to take the world as it is.
This week, the world showed him exactly what that means.
The prime minister has toured the Indo-Pacific over the past 10 days, positioning himself as a “pragmatic” yet “principled” leader for a new era, a “middle-power” visionary with a clear plan to survive the upheaval of a crumbling international order.
But the trip was controversial even before he left, with outrage over his push to repair relations with India while questions remain about whether the country is — or was — linked to deadly violence, crime and political interference in Canada.
As the prime minister’s trip began, the Middle East was tense but largely at peace. Hours later it was a war zone, with missiles and attack-drones tracing near the very air he had only just travelled.
Both issues — Carney’s rapprochement with India, and his response to the spiralling Iran conflict — followed him from Mumbai and New Delhi, through Australia to Japan, where the prime minister landed Friday evening. Carney’s voyage became a true test of his proposition, made most famously in January at Davos, that countries like Canada must accept the realities of a troubled world and forge new ties to endure it, even when it is uncomfortable.
The past 10 days demonstrated how messy and challenging that really is.
The bombs started falling on the first full day of the trip. Carney was in Mumbai, holding private meetings with corporate executives in the financial capital of a booming economic superpower of more than 1.4-billion people.
But while the government worked to address the broadening conflict, with Iranian missiles and drones striking out at Israel, American military bases and the Middle Eastern countries that host them, Carney was also engaged in the balancing act of his diplomatic reset with India.
Those efforts really started nine months ago, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi accepted Carney’s invitation to attend the G7 summit in the Canadian Rockies. It was a clear signal Carney wanted to repair a relationship that had plummeted into a deep freeze in 2024, when his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, made a public statement about “credible allegations” that agents of New Delhi were linked to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Canadian activist for the creation of an independent Sikh state called Khalistan, in what is now part of India.
India has denied the allegations.
Then, on the eve of his trip last week, a senior government official told journalists that Ottawa was confident that concerning behaviour by India in Canada was no longer going on.
The statement fuelled anger from Khalistan activists, and enflamed tensions just as Carney embarked on his diplomatic reset with India, making what was already a delicate political dance all the more difficult.
He managed to achieve what appears to be a genuine reset of relations. Modi praised Carney as the driving force that brought the two countries back together.
When he took questions in Australia, Carney distanced himself from the official’s statement that troubling activity is no longer occurring, and said he raised issues of transnational repression and foreign interference with Modi. However, he refused to clarify what he believes is going on, citing secret security briefings.
That leaves open the possibility for confusion, and the ongoing concerns waiting for him back in Canada.
More confusion was sparked by the Carney government’s stance on the Middle East war, which seemed to change as the prime minister left India for a warm welcome in the Australian cities of Sydney and Canberra.
His first statements expressed clear support for the U.S. and Israeli strikes last Saturday that killed senior figures in Iran’s theocratic regime, including the country's 86-year-old supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
But Carney’s backing seemed to clash with his Davos claim that Canada’s “pragmatic” foreign policy wouldn’t change its opposition to any use of force that breaks international law.
The picture got muddier when Carney told reporters he agreed that those initial strikes likely broke international law. But he supported them anyway, he said, arguing international institutions failed to prevent Iran from trying to get a nuclear bomb and sponsoring terrorist militias across the Middle East.
Regardless of these shifts, what Carney is doing on the world stage is getting noticed. Media interest was intense when the prime minister visited Australia’s parliament on Thursday, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese alluding to Carney’s Davos speech and associating himself with its call for “middle power” co-operation.
That warmth extended to Tokyo, where Carney — who lived in Tokyo in the 1990s when he was an investment banker for Goldman Sachs — addressed the country’s prime minister, albeit haltingly, in her native language. She reacted with a generous smile, and bowed her head to him while gently clapping.

It should come as no surprise that Florida is the example to emulate when it comes to states working with the federal government on immigration enforcement.
I was recently given a front row seat to see the partnership through a ride along with the Florida Highway Patrol. While FHP is not the only local law enforcement agency to work with ICE and Border Patrol to arrest illegal aliens in the state, they have certainly put in the work.
FHP has made around 9,000 arrests since March of last year. At the start of last week’s operation, 1,567 of them had criminal histories beyond being in the U.S. illegally. All Florida law enforcement agencies have made over 20,000 arrests, thanks to their integration through ICE’s 287(g) program near the start of President Trump’s second term.
Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law that mandates all state and local police departments and sheriff’s offices work with ICE beyond allowing access to jails and prisons.
What was remarkable is the stark difference between the environment in Florida as opposed to places like Minnesota and Illinois. The difference should come as no surprise considering Florida is a law and order state that has no sanctuary cities, but to see it up close after being in Minneapolis earlier this year was still shocking.
No one was speeding and chasing the FHP or ICE vehicles while honking their horns. When arrests were being made, no one was blowing whistles or interfering with the operation. Yes, people were filming while they were behind the wheel, but that was the extent of anything. Very few people shouted obscenities as they drove by.
To highlight how less hostile the operating environment is, even some ICE agents did not feel the need to wear face coverings. Using a mask is a must in Democrat-controlled areas since far-left activists will make sure to dox the federal agents if their faces are seen.
FHP, ICE, and Border Patrol made 171 arrests over the course of three days. Criminal histories discovered during last week’s operation included:
· MS-13 gang member with a final order of removal
· Aggravated child abuse
· Battery
· Burglary
· Possession and Conspiracy to Sell Heroin
· Firearm and Drug Trafficking
· Illegal Possession of a Firearm
If all 50 states had similar laws, an extra one million illegal aliens would be arrested and put into federal custody. The rate of self-deportations would be even greater, like they have been in Florida after the increase in 287(g) agreements. At a minimum, other GOP-controlled states have no excuse to not have the same drive that Florida has to help deliver on Trump’s campaign promises.

Finally, Candice details the grueLling story of Nancy Grewal who was murdered earlier this week outside of Windsor, Ontario, in what police are calling a targeted killing. Grewal was a vocal critic of Khalistani terrorism and worked to expose violent Sikh extremism in Canada.
Candice reminds the audience that the only other journalist ever assassinated in Canada was in 1998, when Tara Singh Hayer, the editor of a Sikh newspaper and another vocal critic of Khalistani terrorism was gunned down and murdered in his driveway.
Hayer was paralyzed from a previous assassination attempt, and was murdered in his wheelchair. The murder remains unsolved today. Candice reveals to the audience her own experience with Khalistani extremists – including violent threats and doxxing – back in 2018 when she wrote in the Toronto Sun.
