Trump’s tariffs start tomorrow

Canada tried all manner of strategies to ward off Donald Trump’s repeated tariff threats: dining al fresco at Mar-a-Lago; a full-court diplomatic press in D.C.; $1.3-billion for bumped-up border security measures; a sizzle reel of Black Hawk choppers in Manitoba on migrant patrol. It didn’t matter. On Saturday, with a stroke of his much-wielded executive-order Sharpie, the U.S. President ended decades of free trade in North America, imposing levies of up to 25 per cent on all goods imported from Canada and Mexico. The tariffs are set to begin tomorrow.


But this surplus (or “subsidy,” as Trump calls it) is entirely driven by American demand for cheaper Canadian oil. Take away the roughly four million barrels that the U.S. imports every day, and Americans suddenly have their own trade surplus amounting to tens of billions of dollars. That need for Canadian oil might help explain why Trump first proposed exempting it from his sweeping tariffs – and then landed at a lower levy of 10 per cent on Canadian energy.


Or maybe Trump’s tariff assault is simply a means to dispense with the bothersome matter of Canadian sovereignty. Yesterday morning, on social media, he returned his thoughts to annexation. “Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true!” Trump wrote. “Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada – AND NO TARIFFS!”

 

What happens next?

It’s not yet clear how bad this trade war will get: Government officials declined to provide estimates of the economic impact of both U.S. and Canadian retaliatory tariffs, saying it was too early to forecast. But Canadian premiers – who hustled to remove American alcohol from provincial liquor stores this weekend – floated some alarming numbers. Ontario Premier Doug Ford estimated Trump’s tariffs put 450,000 jobs at risk across every region and every sector of the province; Quebec Premier François Legault anticipated the loss of 100,000 jobs.

 

The auto industry, which employs 128,000 Canadians, finds itself squarely in the tariffs crosshairs, after building cross-border supply chains for decades. To take just one example: A single crankshank – the metal backbone of a combustion engine – might travel between Canada and the U.S. six times on its journey toward a finished vehicle, and getting slapped each time with a 25-per-cent tariff will makes its cost prohibitive. Experts predict the North American auto industry could shut down within a week.

 

Ottawa is planning a multibillion-dollar, pandemic-style bailout for workers and businesses hurt by Trump’s tariffs, even with the House of Commons prorogued. Some of the measures, including waiving the one-week wait for employment insurance benefits, don’t require parliamentary approval. But the bulk of potential spending does, and can’t take place until Parliament resumes sitting on March 24.

 

That leaves plenty of time for more fallout. Trump’s executive order threatened further action if Canada retaliates. And Trudeau has already said Canada is considering “non-tariff measures” that could affect exports of energy and critical minerals to the United States. But the President doesn’t seem altogether concerned with the cost to his country. In another weekend social media post – I’ll spare you the all caps – Trump touted his tariff policy. “Will there be some pain? Yes, maybe (and maybe not!) But we will make America great again, and it will all be worth the price that must be paid.”

In response, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled his own two-pronged retaliation plan on $155-billion worth of American imports. Trudeau stressed that he took these steps reluctantly: “We don’t want to be here,” he said in an emotional address on Saturday night. “We didn’t ask for this.” But Canada will hit back tomorrow with 25-per-cent tariffs on hundreds of products – from Florida orange juice to Kentucky bourbon to Pennsylvania motorcycles – totalling $30-billion of U.S. goods. The bulk of the tariffs will go into effect in three weeks, in order to give Canadian companies and supply chains the time to source alternatives. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum teed up retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. on the weekend, as well.

 

So it’s a trade war, and market strategists are warning we better “brace for impact” – economists at RBC fear that tit-for-tat tariffs could wipe out Canadian growth for up to three years and drive the unemployment rate as high as 9.7 per cent. Trudeau is meant to speak with Trump today for the first time since he returned to the White House; there’s still a chance to iron something out. Otherwise, Canadians can expect to pay more for everything from water heaters, vacuum cleaners and refrigerators to chicken, lemons, honey and wine.

 

How we got here:

Trump’s executive order faults Canada for playing a “central role” in the illegal movement of migrants and narcotics into the United States. But “central” might be pushing it: In 2023, the U.S. stopped just shy of 24,000 people trying to side-step an official crossing along the Canadian border.

 

By contrast, 1.5 million people were stopped that year from Mexico. And of the 21,900 pounds of fentanyl seized across the U.S. in 2023, roughly 96 per cent was intercepted at the Mexican border. Less than 0.2 per cent came from Canada. When Trump says, then, that the tariffs on Canada will be removed “upon the President’s determination of sufficient action to alleviate the crisis,” it’s hard to know what that might look like, beyond the $1.3-billion Ottawa has already pledged to boost border security.

 


Perhaps Trump is actually more concerned about the trade deficit, a routine subject of his fixation. Trump has long viewed international trade as a zero-sum game: If a country imports more than it exports, as the U.S. has done every year since 1976, it must be getting swindled. That poses a challenge for Canada, which has run a small but consistent trade surplus with the U.S. for the past half-decade.

Philadelphia plane crash:

Horror as air ambulance 'carrying child patient' and five others in fireball plunge:

4 crew might have escaped jet???

An air-ambulance carrying six people, including a young girl, has crashed in a residential area of Philadelphia causing chaotic scenes on the ground.

 

The Learjet 55 aircraft departed the Northeast Philadelphia Airport on Friday evening and been travelling to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri before it lost control shortly after takeoff. 

Doorbell footage caught the jet hurtling to the ground before exploding in a large fireball after less than a minute in the air.


The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed that there were six people onboard the jet. It is unclear if they managed to eject or were able to escape. 

In their initial statement, FAA had originally reported that there were only two people on board. 

The jet was operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, and according to a statement from them was transporting a young girl who had been receiving treatment. 

 

Four crew members were onboard the flight, alongside the young girl, who remains unknown, and her mother. They were travelling home to Tijuana, Mexico.

They said: 'At this time, we cannot confirm any survivors. No names are being released at this time until family members have been notified.

'Our immediate concern is for the patient's family, our personnel, their families and other victims that may have been hurt on the ground.'


Spokesperson Shai Gold told NBC Philadelphia that the company believed nobody onboard survived. 

Gold said: 'The patient was sponsored by a third-partner charity to undergo life-saving treatment in the U.S. She did her care course. She was going home.' 

Police sources told CBS that there were several injuries being reported to them on the ground. It is not yet known whether there have been any fatalities. 

 

Emergency services are on the scene battling the flames from the collision. 

The aircraft appeared to hit several buildings and cars in the area leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. 

Shriners Hospitals for Children confirmed that the young girl had been one of their patients.

In a statement, they said: 'The patient had received care from Shriners Children’s Philadelphia and was being transported back to her home country in Mexico on a contracted air ambulance when the crash happened.

 

'Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the medical crew and pilots who were also lost in this tragic event - as well as all of the people who were affected on the ground - and we’re thankful to the first responders for their quick action.' 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico confirmed that all people onboard were Mexican nationals.

Flightradar data says the plane had reached an altitude of 1,650 feet before reporting a vertical drop of -11,008 fpm. 

 

Officials in the city said that police and fire crews are on the scene, with nearby roads being closed. 


Parker also said that houses and cars had been impacted by the crash and urged people to stay inside while crews worked the scene. 

 

CNN obtained audio between the air traffic controller and the plane after the collision, in which the controller asks: 'Medevac med service, northeast tower. Medevac med service, northeast tower. Are you on frequency?'

After a period of silence, the controller is then heard saying: 'We have a lost aircraft.' 

The Philadelphia Office of Emergency are advising locals to stay away from the area. 

 

Governor Josh Shapiro posted on X saying: 'I've spoken with @PhillyMayor and my team is in communication with @PhillyPD, @PhilaOEM, and @PhillyFireDept. 

'We are offering all Commonwealth resources as they respond to the small private plane crash in Northeast Philly. 

'We'll continue to provide updates as more information is available.'


Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman also said: 'I've been in contact with @Philly Mayor and awaiting further information on the tragic small plane crash in Northeast Philly. 

'For folks in the area, please follow guidance from local officials and police officers.'

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy shared a picture of himself to his social media saying he had just briefed President Trump on the incident. 

 

That was before President Trump posted on Truth Social saying; 'So sad to see the plane go down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More innocent souls lost. 

'Our people are totally engaged. First Responders are already being given credit for doing a great job. More to follow. God Bless you all.'

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash. The NTSB will lead the investigation.

Stock Market Collapse.

This was so easy for both Canada and Mexico to avoid.  All they had to do was put a stop to the illegal drugs, like Fentanyl, crossing their borders into the United States.  The only other issue was Illegal immigration; both those countries needed to stop the flow of illegal aliens from their country into ours.


The application of Tariffs on Saturday, February 1, by President Trump, against Canada, Mexico, and China are affecting Stock Markets.  All indices are DOWN in late Sunday evening Trading.

Canada and Mexico say they will retaliate.   Perhaps they will.   I saw a meme about that online and the imagery makes the point:

 

This was so easy for both Canada and Mexico to avoid.  All they had to do was put a stop to the illegal drugs, like Fentanyl, crossing their borders into the United States.  The only other issue was Illegal immigration; both those countries needed to stop the flow of illegal aliens from their country into ours.

Instead of realizing the US was serious, both Canada and Mexico thought they could leave things as they are.  They thought wrong.


Investors, Too

Investors seem shocked that President Trump made good on his promise to implement Tariffs.  They shouldn't be shocked - he's not the typical phony politician . . . .  he actually DOES what he says he's going to do.

There's no "posturing" by this man or his Administration.  He has no additional term of office to think about, worry about, or plan for.  THIS is his one, final, chance to fix what's become broken inside the United States and in the way we deal with foreign countries who are harming us -- and he's doing it.  ALL of it.  Right away.

Is this causing some turmoil? Yes.  Some chaos?  Yes.

Why?

 

Because the ENTIRETY of the United States Federal Government thought like Canada and Mexico - "it's just posturing."

Worse, very many employees in that US federal government thought that THEY ran the country, and a President was just someone passing through.   That idea was just dealt a quick death blow.

 

Assistant US Attorneys - fired.   5 out of 6 Executive Assistant FBI Directors - fired.  National Labor Relations Board members - fired.  26 out of 53 FBI Special Agents in charge - fired.  51 Retired Intel Officials who mis-used their reputations to involve themselves politically - Security Clearances REVOKED and ability to enter secure facilities UN-ESCORTED - revoked.

The list goes on and on.  

 

Maybe Investors would do well to get out of whatever echo chamber they've been hanging around in, and realize things are very, VERY different in the United States now.  The American people have had quite enough of the way things have been, and they voted-in change.  BIG CHANGE.

 

We have an actual President again.  Not some illegitimate President like Biden who got into office through rampant, brazen, Ballot Fraud;  Rubber-stamped by two corrupt Houses of Congress, and protected from scrutiny by more corrupt federal Judges, who dismissed lawsuits before they even got to the evidentiary phase.

No.  All that nonsense is over.

 

It seems to me as an outside observer who has no power to influence the Tariff situation at all, that maybe Canada and Mexico should stop trying to fight a force they cannot fight, and instead cooperate.

Fast.

Because while the US Economy may take a hit; the economies of Canada and Mexico will likely see utter economic catastrophe.


D E P R E S S I O N.

Closed businesses, empty store shelves, food lines, then maybe riots, Commercial real estate defaults, then home mortgage defaults, then stock market collapse, then banking collapse.  Oh, and maybe now would be a good time for Canada to recount how many REFINERIES they have to make Diesel Fuel and Gasoline? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

 

After that . . .  who knows?  What if Canada becomes sort of like Ukraine back in the year 2014?  Riots. Collapsed government? Internal combat?  Their neighbor to the south may have to send in troops to take control of the situation . . . . .

 

Canada is, after all, in serious trouble from Justin Trudeau, which is why he had to resign.  Maybe they ought to expedite his replacement - fast.

And Mexico, well, close your northern border to the Drug Cartels and the immigration hordes. Fast.

What if Mexico becomes sort of like . . . . Ukraine in the year 2014 . . . . Maybe their northern neighbor might have to send troops to take control and calm things down?

 

Cooperation and speedy compliance is the only hope for Canada and Mexico.  The only question seems to be whether or not their Ego will cause them to fight a battle they cannot win, or whether good neighborliness and common sense will win the day in those countries.

Investors may want to chew on that for a while.  But not too long.  Economic Catastrophes of this magnitude seem to come at high speed. 

 

Maybe investments in Canada and Mexico aren't such a smart idea right now?

I noticed that too Kathryn, but it's too little too late.  After a decade of city hall refusing to consider church space and volunteers most pastors have lost interest in helping the homeless or preparing to help with any disasters.  They're in survival mode these days thanks to lack of funds and volunteers in the pews. 

 

Protestant pastors are either burned out and want out, or praying for "revival" that looks like what's happening in the USA.  Not gonna happen here.  We're polite tolerant Canadians remember?  Happy that we're not like Americans.  We have the government to take care of us, just need better politicians.


Councilors Trosow, David Ferreira, Hadleigh McAlister and Jerry Pribil voted unanimously to endorse having city staff go over the exact blueprint for what weather would trigger a similar response in the future.

Staff will examine weather conditions, the use of other spaces such as churches, a process to team up with service providers and first responders and possible funding sources, including provincial disaster relief money.

Note that our efforts to highlight the efforts of church groups as the proper givers of charity (not just never-ending taxation) are being heard and REPEATED by councillors.

 

This was after rec centres had to be shut down for cold weather responses that Dickins has never managed to straighten out.

  • ·        In 1871 Congress worked out a partnership with some European venture capitalists. This Cabal of foreign investors would infuse money into the US Monetary System in exchange for their ability to control US taxpayer monies disregarding protection of The People as guaranteed by the US Constitution.

  • ·        By the early 1900’s this privately owned Cabal controlled the Mainstream Media including major newspapers and all news services and thus, the narrative released to the general public.

  • ·        In that same 1913 this Cabal of foreign investors were granted the authority to tax the American people directly (something expressly prohibited by the original Constitution ) by way of Congress passing the 16th Amendment.

  • ·        Also by way of Congress also passing the 17thAmendment, this Cabal gained control of our currency by pushing through Congress the Federal Reserve Act that established a foreign-owned central banking system.
