Former Minnesota GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann resigned from the Heritage Foundation's National Task Force to Combat Antisemitism (NTFCA) on Thursday, slamming the think tank's board of directors for failing to hold President Kevin Roberts accountable.




Roberts pushed the think tank into crisis after Tucker Carlson interviewed white supremacist and Hitler-admiring antisemite Nick Fuentes. Roberts took the moment to go public in a video to defend the Carlson interview.


Roberts later called posting the video a "mistake" but has yet to condemn Carlson for his advocacy of antisemitism and continues to call him a "close personal friend."

"I resigned from the Heritage antisemitism task force because Heritage leadership failed to stand against the voices of antisemitism on the political right," Bachmann, a former presidential candidate, said.


"Inexplicably, consistent voices of antisemitism on the political right were embraced and, worse, defended by the leadership of Heritage Foundation."

"This is the biggest PR disaster in Heritage's history," she added. "Heritage leadership shot a cannon through their brand."


Bachmann, now the dean of Regent University's Robertson School of Government in Virginia, said she "loved and supported the organization since its inception" but now warns that "something has clearly gone wrong within the leadership of Heritage."

Bachmann is one of a growing number of prominent conservative voices to resign from Heritage, citing Roberts' refusal to denounce antisemitism.


Leaders of the NTFCA also announced this past week that the group was officially separating from Heritage, indicating it no longer could stay part of the organization after it failed to condemn Carlson.


"The political left embraces antisemitism full stop," Bachmann said, warning the right could soon be taken over by such thinking, telling Newsmax that "antisemitism has no place within conservatism."


Carlson's Antisemitism

Since he was fired from Fox News in 2023, Carlson and his podcast have become ground zero for antisemitism on the right.

The former host has on more than one occasion suggested that Israel — or "Zionists" — exert undue control over U.S. policy, the media, or public discourse.


For example, at a memorial for Charlie Kirk, he stated: "So it's about 2,000 years ago in Jerusalem ... and Jesus shows up and he starts telling the truth about people ... they just go bonkers" and then mocked the idea. "Why don't we just kill him? That'll shut him up," he said while laughing.


The Anti-Defamation League said: "Carlson's remarks dangerously reinforced the belief that Jews killed Jesus and that Jews have been a malevolent force throughout history.

"This antisemitic myth has led to expulsions and murders of Jews for centuries."

In another episode of his podcast, Carlson said that Charlie Kirk was killed because of the many enemies he had — and described Kirk's recent opposition to an Israeli attack on Iran as creating some angry opponents.


Many have noted that Carlson regularly uses language that implies Israel or an Israeli lobby "controls" or "pulls the strings" in U.S. politics or media — language that echoes classic antisemitic conspiracy tropes about Jewish control of governments, banks, and media.


In Carlson's documentary series "The 9/11 Files" and other segments, Carlson has given air to the idea that the official 9/11 narrative is false and that neoconservatives (often overlapped with pro-Israel Jews in discourse) or Israel helped engineer or allowed the attacks in order to advance a "greater Israel" agenda.


Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has recently spoken out against Carlson's bigotry, arguing that conservatives need to reject his antisemitism.

"Fuentes and Carlson have a right to say what they are saying. But every one of us has an obligation to stand up and say it is wrong," he said.


"I don't have a single friend that's an antisemite or admirer of Adolf Hitler, and if I did, they would not be friends for long," Bryan Leib, a Jewish community leader, told Newsmax.


Leib, who recently resigned from NTFCA, said he was "shocked" Roberts continues to brag about his friendship with Carlson.

"But what's really reprehensible is that Heritage's Trustees refuse to hold Roberts accountable."


Revolt at Heritage Foundation

In the wake of Roberts' failure to condemn Carlson, Heritage is already seeing an exodus of top people, including fellows Stephen Moore and Chris DeMuth.

They have been joined by almost a dozen Jewish and Christian leaders who have quit NTFCA.


A leaked video of a nearly two-hour Heritage staff town hall held on Wednesday showed furious employees demanding Roberts' resignation and condemning his refusal to defend Jewish colleagues.


"We, as an organization, have been unable to utter the words … if you want to cut through it, Tucker Carlson is an antisemite," one staffer told Roberts in the video. "And we still do not have a statement about that."


Another described Heritage as "bleeding" under Roberts' watch.

Longtime fellow Robert Rector demanded to know why the think tank tolerated Carlson's embrace of Fuentes.


"He adores Hitler and says he was a f***in' cool guy," Rector said in the meeting. "Do we want him in the conservative movement?"


Roberts, facing near-universal condemnation from his own staff, offered an apology that critics described as empty and evasive.


He has refused to denounce Carlson or disassociate Heritage from the podcaster.

Rabbi Yaakov Menken, executive vice president of the Coalition for Jewish Values representing 2,500 Orthodox rabbis, said Roberts' actions "pose a huge danger — not just to the Jewish people, but to American civilization."


Late this past week, Zionist Organization of America President Morton Klein called on Roberts to resign from Heritage.


Klein claimed major Jewish donors have already cut off the think tank from their philanthropy, a move that he says will cost Heritage "millions of dollars" in donor support.

Heritage legal scholar Amy Swearer at the foundation's open forum called Roberts' conduct "a masterclass in cowardice that ran cover for the most unhinged dregs of the far right."


Rector and others said Roberts' failure to confront antisemitism has destroyed Heritage's standing as a moral and intellectual authority.


As Bachmann told Newsmax, the damage may be permanent.

Unless the board acts swiftly, she warned, "there may be nothing left to save."

In addition to Roberts, the Heritage website lists 13 members of its Board of Trustees:

SecDef Hegseth's message to defence-industry executives: 

Move faster and invest more, or we just might make you. President Trump's Pentagon chief spoke for more than an hour to a packed auditorium at the National War College on Friday, a gathering Hegseth himself described as an opportunity to look those very executives "in the eye."


Chief takeaways: Hegseth unveiled a slew of policy changes intended to replace his department's Cold War-era acquisition processes with ones that value speed over rigid requirements. But perhaps most notably, he told defense companies to put more of their own money into developing military technology, or take their business elsewhere, Defense One's Lauren C. Williams reported from Fort McNair in southwest Washington, D.C. 


SecDef: "We commit to doing our part, but industry also needs to be willing to invest their own dollars to meet the long-term demand signals provided to them. Industry must use capital expenditure to upgrade facilities, upskill its workforce, and expand capacity. If they don't, we are prepared to fully employ and leverage the many authorities provided to the president, which ensure that the department can secure from industry anything and everything that is required to fight and win our nation's wars," Hegseth said, and vowed to his audience, "We're going to make defense contracting competitive again."


The speech drew largely from a draft memo about the changes that circulated last week. More about that, here.


Expert reax: "Their first response is going to be hiring a whole ton of K Street people to lobby Congress to point out the problems with this process, which is, we're going to take a lot more risk and a lot more things will fail," said Steve Blank, a professor and co-founder of Stanford University's Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation. 


Professor Blank called the speech a death knell for the Pentagon's existing acquisition system. "The Department of War just shot the accountants and opted for speed," he said, and added that he expects major defence contractors to push back against the new efforts. 


However, the speech seemed well-received among defence tech founders, executives, and investors, Williams reports. "It is a vindication of our thesis that America needs an acquisition system focused on meritocracy and transparency," one attendee said. Read more, here.

And more broadly across the Defense Department, "Hegseth Is Purging Military Leaders With Little Explanation," three New York Times correspondents reported Friday. That includes about two dozen generals and admirals in just nine months. "The utter unpredictability of Mr. Hegseth's moves, as described in interviews with 20 current and former military officials, has created an atmosphere of anxiety and mistrust that has forced senior officers to take sides and, at times, pitted them against one another," the reporters write.

Secretary Daniel Driscoll wants the service to buy one million small drones over a two- to three-year period, Reuters reported Friday, calling the development a "major ramp-up" for the Army's acquisition plans. 


Notable: The Army "acquires only about 50,000 drones annually today," which helps indicate the scale of Driscoll's challenge. For some added perspective, "Ukraine and Russia each produce roughly 4 million drones a year," Reuters writes. 


Driscoll: "We expect to purchase at least a million drones within the next two to three years. And we expect that at the end of one or two years from today, we will know that in a moment of conflict, we will be able to activate a supply chain that is robust enough and deep enough to expand based on the threat.


ICYMI: The Army launched a drone-centric pilot program called "SkyFoundry," which is intended to accelerate work with private industry. "This concept will stimulate the U.S. drone industry, support American manufacturing, increase access to rare earth materials, produce low-cost components and ultimately deliver drones for immediate needs to the Army," a service spokesman told Military Times, reporting Friday as well.


"Some drones will be expendable as if they're munitions, others will be durable, but not meant to last forever," the spokesman said. Read more here.

Background: The Army has said it will will cut 6,500 of its 30,000 active-duty aviation-community soldiers over the next two years, mostly by removing one aerial cavalry squadron from each active-duty combat aviation brigade, as part of the effort to build "a leaner, more lethal force." 


The rub: Current Army aviators are trying their best to stay optimistic, but fear that decades-worth of experience will be lost in the culling. But the Army doesn't just want fewer pilots, it wants better-qualified ones; and it's looking to the defense industry for a solution. 


That includes turning its longtime entry-level helicopter education into a new contractor-owned and -operated model called Flight School Next. Officials and contractors said the new model will offer a simplified approach to training, develop better aviator skills, and save money by taking helicopters, instructors, and maintenance out of the service's hands. In the Pacific region, the U.S. Army is amid a rapid modernization effort called Transformation in Contact, and several of the units created or chosen to test new technology and concepts are part of U.S. Army Pacific, Defense One's Jennifer Hlad reported Friday from the AFCEA TechNet Indo-Pacific conference in Honolulu.


According to USARPAC's commander, the greatest risk the Army has in the Indo-Pacific region is "being late" when a crisis or conflict emerges, out of position, not fast enough, or even worse, doing nothing at all," Gen. Ronald Clark told the conference audience. "So as leaders, we have to become comfortable with failing fast, iterating quickly, and developing better solutions," he said. Read the rest here.

Trump 2.0

Developing: The Senate on Sunday took a first step toward ending the longest-ever government shutdown, clearing a procedural hurdle to approve a package that would keep agencies funded through at least January and walk back thousands of federal employee layoffs.


The agreement would approve full-year appropriations for the Veterans Affairs Department, the Agriculture Department and the legislative branch. All other agencies would operate at their fiscal 2025 levels under a continuing resolution that would expire after Jan. 30, Eric Katz of Government Executive reports.


Next: The Senate must still take additional votes to send the measure to the House, though the bill could wind up on President Trump's desk later this week. Read more 

  

Happening today: A federal judge is set to hear a legal challenge to West Virginia National Guard troops' deployment to Washington, D.C., in August. That deployment came in response to the president's orders when he offered false and exaggerated crime statistics to justify soldiers on the streets amid his takeover of the D.C. police force.


Quick summary of the case: "A civic organization called the West Virginia Citizen Action Group says in a lawsuit that Gov. Patrick Morrisey exceeded his authority by deploying up to 300 Guard members to Washington, D.C.," AP reports. "Under state law, the group argues, the governor may deploy the National Guard out of state only for certain purposes, such as responding to a natural disaster or another state's emergency request." For his part, "Morrisey's office has argued the deployment was authorized under federal law." 



And lastly: A federal judge is stepping down after warning this Trump administration poses an "existential threat to democracy" because, in part, he warns the president is "using the law for partisan purposes, targeting his adversaries while sparing his friends and donors from investigation, prosecution, and possible punishment," District Court Judge Mark Wolf wrote in an op-ed published Sunday at The Atlantic.


Why speak out? "I hope to be a spokesperson for embattled judges who, consistent with the code of conduct, feel they cannot speak candidly to the American people," he told the New York Times this weekend.


"The White House's assault on the rule of law is so deeply disturbing to me that I feel compelled to speak out," Wolf wrote in his essay, stressing for his readers, "Silence, for me, is now intolerable." He added in a warning to Times readers, "Americans proudly say that we live in the longest-lived democracy in the world. But that should teach us that all the others failed." AI-Generated Bible Videos:

I recently came across an article called “Why Do Christians Love AI Slop?” Here’s some of what it says:


“Every story. Every miracle. Every word,” the text flashes dramatically on screen before cutting to silence and the image of Jesus on the cross. With 1.7 million views, this video, titled “What if The Bible had a movie trailer…?” is the most popular on The AI Bible YouTube channel, which has more than 270,000 subscribers, and it perfectly encapsulates what the channel offers. Short, AI-generated videos that look very much like the kind of AI slop we have covered at 404 Media before.


Another YouTube channel of AI-generated Bible content, Deep Bible Stories, has 435,000 subscribers, and is the 73rd most popular podcast on the platform according to YouTube’s own ranking. This past week, there was also a viral trend of people using Google’s new AI video generator, Veo 3, to create influencer-style social media videos of biblical stories. Jesus-themed content was also some of the earliest and most viral AI-generated media we’ve seen on Facebook, starting with AI-generated images of Jesus appearing on the beach and escalating to increasingly ridiculous images, like 


But unlike AI slop on Facebook that is made mostly in India and Vietnam for a Western audience by pragmatically hacking Facebook’s algorithms in order to make a living, The AI Bible videos are made by Christians, for Christians, and judging by the YouTube comments, they unanimously love them.


“This video truly reminded me that prayer is powerful even in silence. Thank you for encouraging us to lean into God’s strength,” one commenter wrote. “May every person who watches this receive quiet healing, and may peace visit their heart in unexpected ways.”


“Thank you for sharing God’s Word so beautifully,” another commenter wrote. “Your channel is a beacon of light in a world that needs it.”


I first learned about the videos and how well they were received by a Christian audience from self-described “AI filmmaker” PJ Accetturo, who noted on X that there’s a “massive gap in the market: AI Bible story films. Demand is huge. Supply is almost zero. Audiences aren’t picky about fidelity—they just want more.” Accetturo also said he’s working on his own AI-generated Bible video for a different publisher about the story of Jonah.


Unlike most of the AI slop we’ve reported on so far, the AI Bible channel is the product of a well-established company in Christian media, Pray.com, which claims to make “the world's #1 app for faith and prayer.”


Also this:

Corrina Laughlin, an assistant professor at Loyola Marymount University and the author of Redeem All: How Digital Life Is Changing Evangelical Culture, a book about the intersection of American evangelicalism and tech innovation, told me she was not surprised.


“It's not surprising to me to see Christians producing tons of content using AI because the idea is that God gave them this technology—that’s something I heard over and over again [from Christians]—and they have to use it for him and for his glory,” she said.

The budget confirms that 53 per cent of all new federal measures are now screened through Gender-Based Analysis Plus. Departments are expected to identify and address barriers related to gender, race, disability, and geography by including “responsive approaches” in their program designs.

 

The Youth Climate Corps, announced for the first time in this budget, provides $40 million for paid skills training in “climate emergency and recovery response” and “climate resilience.” 

 

Because farm operators are “predominantly older White men,” the budget proposes that Farm Credit Canada, a federal Crown corporation, adjust its $1 billion lending fund and review practices to “better align with the specific needs of under-represented groups such as women, youth, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQI+, and Black and racialised [new word] entrepreneurs.”

 

A new $8 million allocation under Canadian Heritage funds a program titled Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Sport—the first time this exact name has appeared as a funded initiative in a federal budget.

Sneaky Carney's carbon tax forever?

As if carbon were a bad thing, Carney uses it to get more taxes out of the country.  But just in case the Liberals don't last long in Ottawa, Carney is forcing the provinces to impose harsh new carbon taxes.  If this seems confusing, it's meant to be.


Yet despite initial conciliatory language, Ottawa also intends to “promptly and transparently” force the federal carbon backstop whenever a provincial system is deemed insufficiently harsh, giving the federal government authority to reimpose its own pricing system on provinces that fall short of federal standards.

The change further tightens Ottawa’s control over provincial carbon pricing systems. While provinces such as Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador run their own industrial programs, the federal government sets minimum pricing standards under the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act.


Saskatchewan and Alberta have both announced plans to pause or delay future industrial carbon-tax increases, moves that could trigger Ottawa’s backstop under the new policy.


Additionally, the budget commits to new carbon contracts or financial guarantees through the Canada Growth Fund that compensate companies if future governments reduce the industrial carbon price. In practice, the program would offload the financial risk of carbon-policy changes from corporations to taxpayers.

I'd like to agree with her, but would add one caveat:  victory is found in getting our priorities right, not in limiting our activities.  When Jesus chose to ignore his mother Mary (starting at age 13 when he went to the temple instead of heading home with the family) he was not teaching us to disregard our parents but to prioritize our heavenly father.  We must get His instruction first before indulging in any activity, be it political or changing water into wine.
