Just days after a U.S.-Canada trade deal was rumoured to be within reach, Trump abruptly pulled the plug — furious over a Doug Ford–funded TV ad that used Ronald Reagan’s voice to attack tariffs
A high-stakes trade deal between Canada and the United States has collapsed — and Ontario Premier Doug Ford is being blamed for it.
Just days after Prime Minister Mark Carney said a deal on steel and aluminum could be within reach, former U.S. president Donald Trump abruptly ended talks, furious over a $75-million ad campaign launched by the Ford government.
The ad used Ronald Reagan’s voice to attack tariffs, but the Reagan Foundation accused Ontario of splicing old footage without permission. Trump blasted the campaign as “fraudulent” and accused Canada of trying to “illegally influence” U.S. courts — before announcing that all trade negotiations were “terminated.”
Carney dodged questions on Friday, while Ford doubled down, insisting the ad was “one of the best ever made” and pledging to air it during the World Series.
Political strategist Georgeann Burke tells Marc Patrone the ad “infuriated Trump” and could do lasting damage to Canada’s credibility in Washington. Meanwhile, Ottawa is said to be weighing retaliatory tariffs against General Motors and Stellantis, escalating what’s quickly become a political and economic mess.
As Burke puts it: “Doug Ford thought he was being clever. Instead, he blew up the deal.”
Ontario to Pause Anti-Tariff Ad After Trump Terminates Trade Talks
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that the province will pause its anti-tariff advertisement campaign in the U.S. after President Trump terminated trade talks in response to the ads, which featured quotes from former President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs. The ads will continue to air through the weekend but will be suspended on Monday to allow for the resumption of trade discussions.
In a separate post to X on Thursday, The Ronald Reagan Foundation said the ad “misrepresents” a radio address on free and fair trade from April 1987 and “the government of Ontario did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks.”
But the advertisement does appear to accurately quote Reagan, who supported free trade and delivered the remarks to explain new duties on Japanese products as a response to Japan’s violation of a trade agreement on semiconductors.
“High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars,” Reagan said in the address.
“The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition. So soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidize inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying. Then the worst happens, markets shrink and collapse, businesses and industry shut down, and millions of people lose their jobs,” he added.
Reagan and former Progressive Conservative prime minister Brian Mulroney later went on to sign the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement in 1988.

White House has ‘visceral distaste’ for Ford
After the ad caught the attention of Trump earlier this week, Ford defended the move, saying the aim is to “blast” the message to Americans, particularly Republican districts where Trump draws his support.
The ad, which Ford previously said cost $75 million, has been running on most major U.S. networks.
A senior U.S. government source tells CTV News that the White House has long had a “visceral distaste” for Ford, with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick even referring to him as a “lightweight.”
But the source also tells CTV News that Trump is more broadly concerned about the U.S. Supreme Court, which will begin hearing arguments about the legality of Trump’s global tariffs on Nov. 5, and there are “likely more shoes to drop” amid those concerns.
Ford, meanwhile, did not respond directly to Trump on Friday morning, but shared Reagan’s original radio address in a post on X.
“Canada and the United States are friends, neighbours and allies. President Ronald Reagan knew that we are stronger together,” Ford also wrote.
In a new post to Truth Social on Friday morning, Trump doubled down on his claims of fraud, saying Canada “fraudulently took a big buy ad saying that Ronald Reagan did not like Tariffs, when actually he LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY.”
“Canada is trying to illegally influence the United States Supreme Court in one of the most important rulings in the history of our Country. Canada has long cheated on Tariffs, charging our farmers as much as 400%. Now they, and other countries, can’t take advantage of the U.S. any longer,” Trump also wrote.

In early October last year, about a hundred people came together in the National Liberal Club in London for a conference: Speaking Truth to Social Justice, a name that states the conference’s purpose. There, seven talks were given in the hopes of identifying the problem not with social justice, as an idea or a philosophy, but with a dangerous ideological movement that has branded itself with the name Social Justice, which we have since identified more specifically by the name “Critical Social Justice.” In the spirit of social justice, which speaks truth to unjust power, we set out to speak truth to Critical Social Justice.
The last talk of the morning was by Dr. James Lindsay, and in his talk, “The Truth About Critical Methods,” he makes very clear that Critical Social Justice is not the same thing as social justice. He argues that the branding of social justice, which is how Critical Social Justice promotes itself, misleads people about the nature of that movement. More specifically, he explains how Critical Social Justice—the thing “inside the box”—doesn’t match the “social justice” image “on the outside of the box,” leading people to take up with a movement they wouldn’t support if they understood it more accurately.
To convey this message, he reads directly from the Critical Social Justice literature wherein scholars and activists call Critical Social Justice by that name and explicitly explain that it is neither a liberal movement, as is often thought, nor the same thing as the “true commitments” of social justice. It is a virus that infects liberalism, and Lindsay draws upon this imagery to make his case (many months ahead of the current Covid-19 pandemic outbreak).

After a lengthy wait, Jeffries to endorse Mamdani
NEW YORK — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will endorse Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor Friday, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.
The nod is coming after months of pressure and just before early voting begins Saturday.
Jeffries will join Gov. Kathy Hochul and other senior New York Democrats who’ve announced their support for the democratic socialist after keeping him at arm’s length since his surprising Democratic primary victory in June. One of the people who spoke to POLITICO, who’s close to one of the two camps, said the announcement will come Friday afternoon in the form of a statement, rather than an event.
The long-awaited nod from Jeffries is certain to prove divisive in the fractured party as it seeks a path out of the political wilderness ahead of next year’s midterms. Jeffries’ decision leaves Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as the last key person in state Democratic leadership to withhold support from Mamdani.
Before the expected endorsement Friday, Jeffries sought to keep the focus on the federal shutdown.
“Stay tuned,” he told reporters in Washington, giving his stock reply on a Mamdani endorsement. “I have not refused to endorse. I have refused to articulate my position, and I will momentarily, at some point, in advance of early voting.”
Today’s endorsement of the front-runner is coming after a process that included two in-person meetings in Brooklyn and pressure from congressional progressives. Jeffries faced relentless questioning from reporters and has offered the coy guidance to “stay tuned” on multiple occasions. The minority leader has said he remains focused on steering Democrats back to a House majority in 2026, and some of his moderate battleground members see the progressive Mamdani as a liability.
Jeffries lauded Mamdani’s focus on affordability after the 34-year-old state lawmaker’s upset primary win, but he has also cited the democratic socialist’s refusal to denounce the phrase “globalize the intifada” as a point of concern and has questioned how he’d implement his policies and combat antisemitism as well as gentrification.
“We’ve got to figure out moving forward how we turn proposals into actual plans so that he is successful if he becomes the next mayor, because we need the city to be successful,” the Brooklyn Democrat told CNN last month. He noted that his district, which includes historically Black communities, has “been subjected to gentrification and housing displacement.”
More recently, Jeffries has lauded Mamdani for asking popular NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay at the helm of the country’s biggest police force.
Civil rights leader Al Sharpton has been a conduit in discussions between Jeffries’ and Mamdani’s teams.
Hochul and New York state Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie have thrown in for Mamdani, as has state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. Reps. Jerry Nadler, Adriano Espaillat and Yvette Clarke, who joined Jeffries’ second meeting with Mamdani, have also endorsed the state lawmaker after backing other candidates in the primary.
New York Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs has said he would not endorse Mamdani, marking a seismic break with Hochul and the state’s institutional leadership. Rep. Ritchie Torres said he does not plan to endorse in the general election, and Rep. Dan Goldman remains undecided. Torres and Goldman are both fierce defenders of Israel.
Jeffries has sought to keep his statements about Mamdani barebones as the leader of the big-tent party with the speaker’s gavel on the line and with challenges in Washington, like the looming government shutdown. He has been grilled by reporters on Mamdani when it’s apparent he’d rather be criticizing President Donald Trump’s policies.
“I’m trying to understand why you would spend a significant amount of time asking me about the Democratic nominee who’s not even the mayor,” Jeffries told CNBC in August.
With his support official, those questions are unlikely to abate as Mamdani continues to solidify his vision for City Hall as a democratic socialist whose views differ sharply from many Democrats running in contested districts next year.

Arabica coffee futures in New York jumped nearly 4% to $4.36 a pound – a new record high – amid renewed concerns that adverse weather conditions may impact Brazilian exports. These concerns were previously highlighted in our mid-September coffee report, which warned of ongoing “weather disasters” in Brazil that could threaten global production.
Arabica, the premium bean used by Starbucks, Dunkin’, and other chains, had set the previous record of $4.2995 a pound in February amid rising fears that top grower Brazil would export fewer beans.
In a mid-August report, we cited Maja Wallengren, Danish-born independent coffee market reporter and founder of SpillingTheBean, who warned that adverse weather across key coffee-producing areas in Brazil, including the entire Cerrado Mineiro region and parts of Southern Minas, had experienced “frost damage” severe enough to be a potential “death blow” to the 2026 harvest.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi vows to use local law enforcement to arrest federal agents as she and other Democrats oppose Trump's law and order agenda
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi believes that federal law enforcement officers should be subject to arrest if they break local laws that prevent illegal immigration enforcement, Breitbart reported. The California Democrat seems poised to go toe-to-toe with the Trump administration, but may be in legal trouble after making these statements.
President Donald Trump has begun to crack down on illegal immigration throughout the nation. Part of that includes sending Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents into so-called "sanctuary" jurisdictions.
"While the President may enjoy absolute immunity courtesy of his rogue Supreme Court, those who operate under his orders do not. Our state and local authorities may arrest federal agents if they break California law — and if they are convicted, the President cannot pardon them," a joint statement from Pelosi and Rep. Kevin Mullin (D-CA) said.
This tough talk came after San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins allegedly saw federal agents "roughing people up" in Chicago and Los Angeles. "I had lead time to think about what authority I have and what I can do. This is something I felt very strongly about, and I had my office research it," Jenkins claimed.
Democrats' Claims
Democrats don't care about the regular people who suffer at the hands of criminal illegal immigrants and other deviants who prowl about city streets. Instead, they're worried that these people might be treated a little roughly by law enforcement agents who aim to get them off the streets.
They want to see the agents, not the criminals, arrested, though Jenkins claimed it wouldn't come to having local officers cuffing federal agents. She said that they would use surveillance camera footage to determine if the criminals are treated too unkindly, and she would direct a judge to issue a warrant for the agent's arrest.
To really drive home that their priority is the comfort of suspected illegal immigrants, California Democrats passed a law banning government agents from wearing masks while making arrests, which would make it easier for Jenkins to pursue them. Of course, the agents were forced to do this after several attacks on ICE agents that put them and their families at risk, but Democrats seem unconcerned about that.
Meanwhile, Jenkins worries that Trump may ignore the arrest warrants altogether or challenge the move in court. "For me, this is about San Francisco and what I need to do for San Francisco," Jenkins claimed.
Others, like Berkeley School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, believe this is not an overreach at all and see it as a stopgap against abuses. "As long as the ICE agents are acting legally, the state can’t prosecute them and hold them liable, even if it dislikes what they’re doing," Chemerinsky said.
Pelosi's Troubles
Pelosi's tough talk against federal agents is not without consequences. While speaking to Fox News host Jesse Watters on Thursday, Attorney General Pam Bondi warned Pelosi and others making these threats that they could face consequences. Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is among those actively opposing federal agents and their mission to clean up crime on city streets.
She created the ICE Accountability Project, a nonprofit focused on making ICE officers "unmask" while making sure to log "purported criminal actions of ICE and CBP agents." Bondi warned Lightfoot that she "will be getting a letter from us tomorrow to preserve anything she has done as well, to make sure that she’s not violating the law," she told Watters.
"It appears she is. You cannot disclose the identity of a federal agent—where they live, anything that could harm them," Bondi added. She had the same warning for Illinois Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Jenkins, and Pelosi. "We told them: ‘Preserve your emails, preserve everything you have on this topic.’ Because if you are telling people to arrest our ICE officers, our federal agents, you cannot do that. You are impeding an investigation, and we will charge them.”
This crusade against agents enforcing federal law has got to stop, but the Democrats believe they have a right to run roughshod over the laws of the land. Pelosi and her ilk are about to see what the Trump administration is willing to do to enforce the laws of the land and the will of the American people.

Freedom Rising Message
Canada is at a crossroads. As the authors of ‘COVID-19 Pandemonium’ state: “We are at the beginning of either a resurgence of our democracy or a rapid descent into a V for Vendetta-like world.” But there is reason for hope.
Nadine Wellwood, in her book ‘Alberta Rising: A Principled Vision for a Sovereign and Free Nation’ writes: Alberta stands “at a once-in-a-millennium moment not just to create a more prosperous nation, but to build the freest society the world has ever known.” This reclamation of democracy and individual sovereignty is not solely for the benefit of Albertans, but potentially all western nations that find themselves on the verge of collapse.
I’ve stated many times that Canada is a failed state. Some have challenged my assessment with the response – Canada is not a failed state; it is operating as intended. The message being that Canada was never designed to serve the people of Canada, but rather to serve the elite who established the Corporation of Canada.
The experience of Canada over the last decade would affirm that our governments, courts, and law enforcement do not serve individual Canadians. Every institution that I and others assumed were established to protect individual rights and freedoms and the rule of law has been corrupted, or maybe simply exposed for what it is – a slavery system to extract money, labor, and resources from the people of Canada.
The government’s response to COVID revealed the Charter of Rights and Freedom to be an illusion; a deception; no more than a piece of paper to keep us deluded into thinking Canada was the envy of the world. But no more.
The Charter has been inverted from being an instrument to restrain the government to being an instrument to restrain the people from voicing their discontent and declaring their sovereignty.
Wellwood writes: “The institutions that once safeguarded liberty have been hollowed out, weaponized, and repurposed not for freedom, but for control.” “Alberta must take a different path: one that enshrines the supremacy of the individual.”
There is a once in a lifetime opportunity presenting in Alberta. But it requires thoughtful expression. An independent Alberta cannot become a replica of what currently exists both within and outside of Alberta. A new vision is required.
I suggest it is time to focus less on what we are rejecting and more on what we want to create for ourselves, our families and our community. There is power in creation, in imagining the kind of world we want our children and grandchildren to experience.
The last five years have made us wiser, stronger and more determined.
It’s time for freedom to rise and shine.
